Training opportunity for local firefighters

It was a busy day for local fire departments as they attended training day exercises at the Dundurn Fire Hall on Nov. 4.

SaskEnergy played host to 18 fire departments and over 50 firefighters, including members from LeRoy, Quill Lake, Annaheim, Jansen, Cudworth, and Colonsay taking part.

SaskEnergy’s Vince Tkatchuk and Curtis Hatch were on hand to train and certify members on natural gas emergencies.

SaskEnergy offers the training to fire departments across the province, says LeRoy and District Fire Department Fire Chief and Saskatchewan Volunteer Fire Fighters Association Vice President, Paul Cockell.

The training in Dundurn was a way to cover more departments in a day than SaskEnergy providing the training to individual departments, he says.

They were able to get other organizations involved to make it a fuller day, which worked out pretty well, says Cockell.

STARS air ambulance member Luc Duval was also on hand to promote training and information on air ambulance procedure and their Mobile Education Unit which simulates a rural emergency room. “The purpose of these education units help simulate real-world training for doctors, nurses and emergency personnel in smaller communities across Saskatchewan, that may not be able to access training available in

Cal Knowles and Emergency Management and Fire Safety gave the rural departments an idea of the help they can receive in case of an emergency.

Cockell finished off the day of training by providing information on the Critical Incident Stress Management team and how they are helping rural firefighters who can be the ones to answer some intense calls.

For those who need someone to talk to after to get things off their

chest, that is what the group is made for, says Cockell, “as more of a peer review as opposed to having counselling. The nice thing is we can be brought in ASAP.�

While Cockell does not consider himself a professional counsellor by any stretch of the imagination, what he can do for other firefighters is relate to their situation and help them come up with ways to cope with what they see.

That does not mean counselling is not an option, says Cockell, with cases being referred to a professional if the need arises.

Quill Lake Volunteer Firefighter, Jared Lipka, as well as two others from the Quill Lake Fire Department, attended the training.

Any opportunity to receive more training is an asset in a rural department. “Natural gas emergencies are very real. It can happen and to have a bit of an idea of how it works and what to do and what not to do in certain situations is a vital thing to know.�

Every aspect of the training was something that Lipka found important in his role as a volunteer firefighter.

Marysburg Assumption Church and Centre for the Arts will once again be filled with music as the Marysburg Regional Choir returns for their 19th Christmas Concert on Dec. 3.

Three different choirs and 60 different musicians will be making their way to Marysburg bringing their

voices and instruments with the adult choir, children’s choir, and handbell choir out of Middle Lake, as well as Scott McKnight, a cellist with the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra, who is also coming to join the show.

The choir was started by Al Gerwing in 1998 with members coming from all around to sing and to listen. Sharon Carter took over directing the choir after Gerwing passed away in 2007.

It has been a good time for the group that keeps on growing, says Carter, with people getting together who love to sing.

It has become a generational thing, too, says Carter, with many second generation participants joining the choir alongside their parents. “It’s been an ongoing tradition for people in the area who just want to sing.�

These people include members from Saskatoon who make the drive out to practice with the choir. “That’s quite remarkable that they feel that strongly about being participants.�

Since many of the participants do not live right in Marysburg, practice nights make for an interesting sight with cars coming from every direction to practice.

That is what Carter finds unique about the experience is, “how many people are committed and dedicated to participating every year,� no matter their skill levels. Members of the choir range from people with no experience reading music at all to people who read music quite fluently.

Putting that mixture together, people learn quickly. “The quality is there, even if someone does not read as well as somebody else.�

Everyone should be able to give choir a try, says Carter, no matter their background or ability. When you mix abilities, you get the sound you want, she says.

People from all around come to listen to the choir with a full church every year.

Remember the reason for remembrance day

It has now been 72 years since the end of World War II. The four men are Humboldt’s last living veterans of the Second World War. In preparing the Remembrance Day special that is part of this newspaper, I had the honour of talking with four gentleman who lived through the worst thing imaginable.

War. A quote in MASH is one of the best illustrations of this.

“War isn’t hell,” said Hawkeye, played by Alan Alda. “War is war, and hell is hell. And of the two, war is a lot worse...There are no innocent bystanders in hell. War is chock full of them – little kids, cripples, old ladies.

In fact, except for some of the brass, almost everybody involved is an innocent bystander.”

This has been an emotional week for

me as I went from service to service.

While I have never fought in a war, I find myself tearing up at the sounds of the “Last Post” or seeing all the veterans at the different services.

I cannot even imagine what Remembrance Day is like for veterans.

They are the reason we remember.

No one can fully understand that level of horror until one actually lives through it.

With what our four WWII veterans went through, and could still be going through – their own hell – I appreciated how they were willing to speak to me about it.

Some people who went through war experiences are unable to talk about them and, that is okay.

Each person, whether they were on the front lines or supporting the military at home, went through their own struggles, and each person decides whether they are willing to talk

about it.

However, I wish more veterans would talk about their experiences.

Four is a lonely number, and we are running out of times to collect and save these stories of sacrifice and heroism, although I am sure most veterans would balk at the word “hero.”

Each man had his own story about death, destruction and how innocent people suffered during that time.

There is value in their stories. There is power in their words.

Nick Sokolan was on the front line from France to Germany and was part of the liberation of France and Holland.

He spoke of some of what he had seen. He remembers watching people stagger down the streets of Holland.

They were not drunk, he says. They were starving.

Leo Saretsky talked about how his ship was sunk just off the coast of

England. Three merchant ships went down along with his.

Six men died with the sinking of the HMCS Trentonian. We don’t know how many died on the other ships.

Saretsky takes solace in the fact that the U-boat that sank his ship went down a short time later. How much death was there in the sinking of that submarine?

How can anyone listen to stories like that and want to be a part of it?

One of the veterans made a valid point, especially in light of current tensions: what if world leaders were forced to fight their own wars?

They were just kids, he said. What did they know about fighting and killing?

Nine local schools advance to provincials

It was a busy week for volleyball teams from around the area, as the juniors competed in the district championships, the senior girls at the regional championships, and the senior boys at the conference championships.

Junior Girls The Lanigan High Lazers captured the junior girls district championship with a two sets to none, 25-9, 25-17 victory over the LeRoy Lightning.

The championship featured four teams, including Lanigan High, Foam Lake, LeRoy, and Annaheim.

Lanigan High claimed top spot in the round robin and earned them a berth in the district final, while Foam Lake finished second, and LeRoy finished third, moving both of those teams into the semi-final.

Annaheim finished in fourth in the four team tournament and were eliminated.

The Lightning finished as a district runner up, after upsetting Foam Lake 18-25, 25-19, 15-6 in the semi-final.

Junior “B” Girls The Raymore Rebels captured the junior “B” girls

district championship with a two sets to none, 25-23, 25-21 victory over the Watrous Wildcats.

The championship featured four teams including, Raymore, Watrous High, Humboldt Public, and Strasbourg.

The tournament followed a pattern all the way to the title as Raymore won the round robin, and the final, Watrous High finished second in the round robin, and in the final, Humboldt Public finished third, and Strasbourg finished fourth.

Watrous High earned the second and final spot in the district final with a 25-19, 19-25, 15-4 win over Humboldt Public in the semi-finals.

Junior Boys Bellevue captured the boys district title with a two sets to one, 20-25, 25-20, 15-6 win over Wadena in the final in Wadena on Nov. 7.

The two teams came into the district final as the two pre-district champions, and faced off in the winner takes all best of three match.

In pro football, quarterback is king

It’s all about the quarterback in the National Football League. If you’ve got one, you’ve got a chance. If you don’t, it’s going to be a long year. In the case of the QB-challenged Cleveland Browns, it’s more like a long decade, or two.

The New England Patriots have had the best quarterback in the NFL for the past 17 years in Tom Brady and, not surprisingly, they have been the best team, by far, over that period of time. The Green Bay Packers have contended over the past 10 years thanks in large part to the play of QB stars Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers. Retirements (Favre) and injuries (Rodgers) have levelled the playing field and turned a top team into a mid-level squad.

Teams’ fortunes rise and fall on the status of their quarterbacks. The Philadelphia Eagles, who had the good sense to draft QB Carson Wentz from North Dakota State in the summer of 2016, are the No. 1 team in the league, thanks to the almost instant success of Wentz. Jared Goff, who was the No. 1 pick in the same draft in which Wentz went No 2, took a year to find his bearings but now with a new coach (Sean McVay) in Los Angeles, Goff and the Rams are suddenly a playoff

contender. The Houston Texans were one of the surprise teams of the current season, averaging a league-high 30plus points per game, and quarterback Deshaun Watson was a virtual lock to win rookie-of-the-year award. Then he tore his ACL in a non-contact play in a practice Nov. 2, and the Texans’ future fortunes were suddenly suspect, if not doomed.

Coaches wish they could put their quarterbacks in a safety deposit box, bring them out on Sundays to perform, and then put them back in their steel cage. Alas, the quarterback is usually fairly fragile, and teams are fortunate if their starter stays healthy for a full season.

Cleveland, San Francisco, Arizona and Miami are, for a variety of reasons, weak at quarterback. Cleveland seemingly drafts a quarterback every year, only to watch him fail. San Francisco dumped the controversial Colin Kaepernick and recently picked up former New England backup Jimmy Garoppolo to give them what they think will be stability at the position.

Arizona lost veteran Carson Palmer to an arm injury and doesn’t have a capable backup; Miami was so desperate for a quarterback after Ryan Tannehill suffered a pre-season knee injury that they signed the lamentable ex-Bear

Jay Cutler, who had retired and was planning a broadcasting career.

If injuries stay away, watch for a Philly-New England Super Bowl in February. The reason is simple: They have the best two quarterbacks in the league this season.

• Greg Cote of the Miami Herald: “Aston Martin is selling a Tom Bradyedition automobile for $360,000. It is preprogrammed to drive straight to the Super Bowl.” Added Scott Ostler of the San Francisco Chronicle: And the car will feature “self-deflating tires.”

• Headline at SportsPickle.com: “Study: Youth participation in football dropping as more parents fear their sons could develop into Browns QBs.” • Norman Chad of the Washington Post: “If we had replay review in 1776, the American revolution might still be ongoing.”

• RJ Currie of sportsdeke.com: “The Winnipeg Jets said Brendan Lemieux will add sandpaper to their team. If he’s like his dad, Claude, he’ll certainly rub opponents the wrong way.”

• Norman Chad again, on Twitter: “I’ve said it for years: If a pitcher hits four batters in one game, he should have to sit in the penalty box for two full innings.”

• Ostler again: “Whatever happened to baseball’s unwritten code of

conduct? Dodgers’ Joc Pederson hits a home run and his trot turns into a Broadway musical.”

• Comedy writer Jim Barach: “A new beer from Samuel Adams will be sold for $200 a bottle. The idea is to give everyone the experience of what it’s like to have a cold brew at Yankee Stadium.”

• RJ Currie again: “Carey Price, the consensus world’s best goalie, is averaging 3.77 goals against with an .877 save percentage. You don’t need to be Drew Carey to know this Price isn’t right.”

• Another one from Currie: “At the Grand Slam curling event in Lloydminster, Sweden’s Anna Hasselborg had a 7-ender go against her. Or as my old curling team used to call that — the usual.”

• Comedy writer Alex Kaseberg: “There was an awkward moment at the parade for the Houston Astros when they told Jose Altuve he wasn’t tall enough to ride on the float.”

• Kaseberg again, on the NFL trying to pinpoint the cause of its flagging TV ratings: “We will bring you the rest of this joke following another penalty, a coach challenge, an injury timeout and a long commercial break.”

History of horses on display in Yorkton

Calvin Daniels It is always a highlight of the fall season for me to attend the annual Harvest Showdown in Yorkton.

In many ways it takes me back to my roots. I spent my youth on the summer fair circuit showing stock, and was at the

first eight or 10 years of Canadian Western Agribition. They are among my fondest memories in the sense they were my summer camps.

Harvest Showdown still gives me a nice taste of those well-remembered days. There are cattle and heavy horses and grain displays, and more importantly there are cattle people and grain farmers.

I grew up on a farm, and it was my background in agriculture which helped me get my first job at a newspaper here in Yorkton. I did not go to journalism school, but knowing a Hereford from a Charolais, and

wheat from oats, opened the door to a writing career.

Among the displays and events at Harvest Showdown that draws my interest most are the heavy horse pulls. Watching the big horses pull thousands of pounds still astounds me even after watching the event for years.

I can’t help but think about how not so long ago in terms of our country it was horses which powered practically everything, hauling goods, plowing fields, powering the lumber sector, and more.

Those days are gone, but should not be forgot-

ten, which is why I very much appreciated the efforts of writer Merlin Ford in writing Horses, Harness and Homesteads: The History of Draft Horses in Saskatchewan. It’s a book most farmers should read just to better understand their industry’s past.

This year there was a new feature at the Showdown, the first presentation of the Clydesdale Breeders Cup. The Cup was a new initiative, explained Delvin Szumutku one of the event’s organizers, and a Clydesdale producer himself from Stockholm, Sask. He explained four shows were held over

the summer in Nipawin, Swift Current, North Battleford and Austin, MB. At each of the events horses could be entered in the Cup qualifier, with the top two animals eligible to go before the judge Calvin Martin in Yorkton for the ultimate prize.

From the perspective of show judge Martin, a long-time Clydesdale breeder from Strathclair, MB., the quality of animal in the ring Thursday evening was outstanding.

In terms of his final selection Martin said the mare moved well, with good feet, and nice hocks.

In terms of a draft horse he said feet and legs are critical.

“The saying is no feet, no horse,” he said. “They need the feet to grip the ground.”

That point really tied the show into the realty of the horse pulls and the history of the big horses which is something that will stick with me for a long time.

Vaccine basics talk of campus at St. Peter’s

The 2017/2018 St. Peter’s College Speaker Series continued with Dr. Scott Napper, professor of Biochemistry at the University of Saskatchewan coming into town.

Napper spoke about the importance of vaccines in human history, including the first ones developed to fight small pox, rabies, and polio.

But the road to the eradications of these diseases have not been smooth, with many dark tales involved.

Anti-vaxers are now the dark point in modern history, says Napper.

“We as a society are in so much trouble right now.

We have this disconnect between science and society.”

With government intervention to fund scientific research into vaccines came a disconnect between society and science and that is creating the distrust that we see today, says Napper.

A quote from Carl Sagan perfectly sums up this relationship, he says.

“We’ve created a society that is intimately dependant upon technology, at the same time we’ve arranged it that virtually no one understands those technologies.”

And it is not just about individuals avoiding getting sick themselves, but also building up herd immunity, he says.

“If enough people get vaccinated, it doesn’t give the pathogen any place to hide. We get rid of those reservoirs.”

For Napper, this is a real idea when his daughter at 2 years old contracted H1N1.

“It was the most horrifying period of my life,” he says, “there’s nothing you can do and there is a chance it can kill her.”

Thanks to a scientific theory that was published

by Andrew Wakefield, this idea of not vaccinating children is a problem, not just the yearly vaccines that come out to fight influenza, but the measles, mumps, and rubella that were under control for decades that Wakefield reported caused autism with the MMR vaccine.

The problem with Wakefield’s study of the vaccine was that there is no causation between the MMR and autism, says Napper.

The data was falsified and Wakefield was disbarred as a doctor but the rumors of the link has taken hold, says Napper.

Scientists can say what they want in the scientific world, he says, but they have to back it up with the scientific method; theory, hypothesis, test it.

“If it doesn’t prove true, you have to stop saying it. That’s the only way we can have an evolution of ideas. That’s the only way we can evolve science.”

Looking at rates of autism in vaccinated and unvaccinated children, the rates are the same, so there is no scientific evidence to back up Wakefield’s claim.

And these claims are dangerous, says Napper, but we are also seeing push back in cases of doctors not seeing people who have not been vaccinated.

It really should not have to be like this, he says.

“We should be able to have a communication between scientists and the public to come to a conclusion of what’s best for us.”

Even with this modern problem of the Anti-Vax movement, the future still looks bright for vaccine research, says Napper.

We tend to think of vaccines within the realm of infectious disease, however they are becoming more than that, including for things like prion disease, like BSE, drug addiction and cancer.

“The idea that cancerous cells can be identified by the immune system as being a foreign attacker and you can target the immune system against it. Might revolutionize the way we deal with cancer.”

Dialogue with Viscount news producers in Muenster

Members of the Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan (APAS) District 5 gathered at St. Peter’s Abbey for their annual meeting on Nov. 10.

Rural Municipality representatives, as well as ratepayers of District 5, came to discuss policy issues as well as issues that members brought up during round table discussions.

Nineteen member RMs makeup District 5, including LeRoy, Wolverine, St. Peter’s, and Lake Lenore.

District 5 Director, Mickey Palfy, says issues across the province are having big impacts on producers, including wildfires in the southwest of Saskatchewan.

“We have a lot of producers down there that lost many things and they weren’t insured. Through no fault of their own they lost hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of assets.”

Annual meetings were taking place across all six APAS districts.

Palfy says this is a way they are getting information directly from the producers.

APAS Vice-President Norm Hall was also in attendance at the meeting and he also says that the meetings are a good way to get information directly from producers, whether by discussions on issues or discussion on resolutions.

“In a lot of cases, we’re already working on so many of those issues.

It’s getting that information in us and disseminating some of the information we already have,” says Hall.

Five policy presentations were also on the docket with producers getting more information as well as speaking to their own issues with federal taxation consultation, weed management, farm input pricing survey, green infrastructure and water management

projects, and Business Risk Management review.

A lot of work went into those presentations, says Palfy, especially when it comes time to go to government and lobby for producers.

“We can’t keep a scoreboard on what we do but being in constant contact with provincial and federal governments is very important.”

No matter what the issue, Hall says that this is also a way to keep producers updated on the what is going on in the farming world, whether it is lobbying for better transportation of grain or taxation.

Cell phone coverage was a big part of the discussion with farmers, especially when it comes to both from a safety and equipment standpoint, says Hall.

“You ask an urban business to go without internet or to slow down their internet or maybe they don’t have cell phone coverage. They’d pack up their cases and move somewhere else. We don’t have that option.”

Excessive water issues, especially in the district 5 areas, has also been a big problem for farmers, but Hall says producers do not have to go too far west or south for drought to be a huge problem.

“We’re dealing on both ends of that stick; both flood proofing and drought proofing our province.”

Any producer is welcome to attend district meetings, says Palfy.

Whether it is the subject matter or the increased engagement, Hall says that they are seeing an increase in membership and attendance at the meetings, which is great to see.

“We’ve been working hard to get the voice of the Saskatchewan farmer in front of any government official, whether it’s an elected or staff, anybody that will listen. Whether that’s provincially or federally.”

Obituaries BRAUN: Madeline Jul. 18, 1921 - Oct. 31, 2017 Madeline Theresa (nee Teiber) Braun of St. Maryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Villa, Humboldt, SK (and formerly of Lake Lenore, SK) passed away at the Humboldt District Hospital on Tuesday, October 31, 2017.

She was 96 years of age.

Madeline was born on July 18, 1921 in St. Ann Romania to Ferdinand Sr. and Theresa (nee Oster) Teiber. She immigrated to Canada with her parents and two brothers in 1929.

She attended Bright Valley School and lived on the farm until she married Albert Braun on June 25, 1945. They spent over 40 years in Lake Lenore. Albert was the school janitor and she was his helper. They were blessed with five children and loved visiting the children and grandchildren and also giving help when needed. Sadly, Albert passed away of a massive heart attack on February 24, 1984. A year later Madeline moved to Humboldt to live with her youngest child, Les. She was a CWL member for almost 60 years, helping with many funeral lunches and church suppers, also assisting with Meals on Wheels for many years. When the Good Neighbor Store opened she spent many hours volunteering her time there. Finally at age 85, she had to quit because of health reasons. Madeline believed in prayer, especially the Rosary. She made many novenas for her children and grandchildren. Madeline attended mass regularly, and also enjoyed watching the mass on TV. In her first years in Humboldt, she walked to mass every morning. Madeline grew a large garden and enjoyed canning, preserving, cooking and of course sharing her produce. She also loved baking for her family, even after they left home. She never came for a visit unless she brought her baking, especially her awesome cinnamon buns. She loved having the family all together for special holidays, doing most of the work herself, until finally she had to give in for some help. Madeline loved watching her soaps on TV, she also enjoyed sewing, knitting and crocheting quilts, afghans, slippers, scarves and mittens for her family. Madeline had a bad fall and spent five weeks in the hospital, then moved to St. Maryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Villa for only four weeks before she passed away. Madeline will be lovingly remembered by her four children, eight grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren and two great-greatgrandchildren. A Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church Humboldt, SK on Tuesday, November 7, 2017 at 10:00 a.m., presided by Fr. Joseph Salihu. Others taking part were: Marlene Funk, crossbearer; Paullette Nemish and Megan Nemish, scripture readers; Gordon Braun, intentions; Cathy Scherbac, Rebecca Kruk, Anna McCordic and Molly McCordic, giftbearers; Jean Braun and Leanne Leonardo, memorial table attendants; Lisa Braun, eulogist; Loretta Schugmann as director with organist Marie Aubin and members of St. Augustine Parish Funeral Choir, music ministry. An honor guard was formed by members of the CWL. Honorary pallbearers were especially her son Les Braun,Trevor Nemish, Morris Nemish, Alvin Funk, Rob Leonardo and all those who shared in Madelineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life. Active pallbearers were: Bradley Nemish, Jeffrey Nemish, Brent Puff, Shelley Puff, Lisa Braun, Murray Braun and Curtis Braun. Interment followed at St. Anthonyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Roman Catholic Cemetery, Lake Lenore, SK. Nine local schools advance to provincials Continued from page 3 Senior Girls 1A East Region It was an excellent trip to the regional championships for a trio of local teams as they finished first, second, and third, and all earned spots at the provincial championships.

The Englefeld Eagles emerged from the regional championships in Kenaston as the champion after knocking off Rose Valley two sets to none in the final.

The Eagles rolled through the tournament, not losing a set along the way as they beat Ituna and Imperial two sets to none in the round robin to earn top spot in Pool B and a semi-final clash with Annaheim.

The Eagles won that match two sets to none as well, setting up the aforementioned final against Rose Valley.

The Rose Valley Roadrunners earned their way to the final following a similar path as the Roadrunners beating Kenaston, and Annaheim two sets to none to claim top spot in Pool A. Thanks to earning the top spot the Roadrunners moved into the semi-final where they knocked off Imperial two sets to none to move into the final.

The Annaheim Rebels meanwhile, finished the tournament with an overall record of 2-2 as they lost two sets to none to Rose Valley in their first round robin match, before beating Kenaston two sets to one in a winner advances match.

After losing the semi-final two sets to none to Englefeld, the Rebels rebounded in the bronze medal match as they knocked off Imperial two sets to none to finish third.

All three teams will now move on to the provincial championships Nov. 17-18 shared by hosts Maple Creek and Fox Valley.

2A East Region A pair of local schools enjoyed their trip to the 2A East Region regional championships as they emerged as the top two teams, and earned berths to the provincial championships.

The top teams from the tournament were the Muenster Cougars, who claimed the regional title, thanks to a perfect weekend.

The Cougars rolled through the tournament not losing a set along the way as they knocked off Hanley and Norquay two sets to none in the round robin to earn the top seed in Pool B. The Cougars carried that momentum into the semifinal were they rolled past Langham two sets to none, setting up a showdown with Birch Hills in the final, which the Cougars won two sets to none.

The Birch Hills Marauders meanwhile, rolled through the tournament as well to get to the final as they beat Langham two sets to one and Preeceville two sets to none to earn the top seed in Pool A. In the semi-final, the Marauders continued their winning ways knocking off Hanley two sets to none, before falling to Muenster in the final.

Both teams now turn their attention to the provincial championships, which will be held in Kenaston and Davidson, Nov. 17-18.

3A East Region The Wynyard Golden Bears are provincial bound after winning the regional championship in Hudson Bay on Nov. 11 with a two sets to none victory over Foam Lake.

The Golden Bears cruised through the tournament earning the top seed in Pool A after the round robin thanks to two sets to none victories over Foam Lake, and Hudson Bay. As the top seed in Pool A, the Golden Bears crossed over to take on the second seed in Pool B, Meath Park, in the semi-finals.

The Bears continued their strong run of form in the semi-final as they knocked off Meath Park two sets to one to set up the aforementioned showdown with Foam Lake.

3A West Region The final two local schools to earn spots at the provincial championships were Wakaw and Watrous as they finished one-two after a two sets to none win for Wakaw in the regional final.

The Wakaw Warriors earned the provincial title the hard way as they finished the round robin in a three-way tie for first and needed a tiebreaker just to see their season not come to a close.

After losing to LCBI two sets to none in their opening match, the Warriors rebounded to beat Waldheim two sets to none in their second and final round robin match, which was enough to claim the top seed in Pool A. The win moved the Warriors into the semi-finals, where they took on Stobart, who finished second in Pool B. The Warriors cruised through the semi-final knocking off Stobart two sets to none, setting up the aforementioned showdown against Watrous.

The Wildcats meanwhile, earned their spot in the final after cruising through their first three matches, knocking off Stobart two sets to none, and Hepburn two sets to one in the round robin, and LCBI two sets to none in the semi-finals, setting up the aforementioned showdown with Wakaw.

Both teams, along with Wynyard now move into the 3A provincial championships in Oxbow and Carlyle on Nov. 17-18.

Senior Boys 1A East Conference 1 It was an excellent trip to the conference championships for the Middle Lake Avengers as they claimed a second place finish at the conference tournament in Zenon Park on Nov. 11.

With just four teams at the tournament all four teams played each other once, with the top two round robin finishers claiming spots at the regional championships.

The Avengers started off the tournament on a high note as they knocked off Zenon Park two sets to none and then cruised past Cudworth two sets to none, setting up a winner takes all final match against Bellevue.

Unfortunately for the Avengers they could not keep the momentum going in their final match as they were dropped two sets to none by Bellevue.

Despite the loss the Avengers still finished as the second seed and will move on to the east regional championships Nov. 17-18 on their home floor.

1A East Conference 2 It was an excellent trip to the conference championships for a pair of local schools as they finished first and second, and both earned berths to the regional tournament.

The Annaheim Rebels captured the conference title after finishing the round robin tournament with a perfect 4-0 record.

The Rebels rolled through the tournament losing just a single set along the way as they knocked off Muenster, LeRoy, and Payepot two sets to none, and Englefeld two sets to one.

The Englefeld Eagles meanwhile, finished the conference tournament in second with a record of 3-1.

The Eagles picked up a pair of two sets to none wins over Muenster, and Payepot, and picked up a two sets to one win over LeRoy. Both the Rebels and Eagles now turn their attention to the 1A East Regional tournament in Middle Lake Nov. 17-18.

2A North Conference 1 The Kinistino Blues took care of home court advantage as they finished second at the conference tournament on Nov. 11 and booked a berth at regionals.

The Blues rolled through the round robin tournament with a 21 record, as they knocked off Little Red River, and Pelican Lake, two sets to none, with a two sets to none loss to Canoe Lake sandwiched in the middle.

The Blues now turn their attention to the 2A North Regional tournament in Glaslyn Nov. 17-18.

3A East Conference 1 The Birch Hills Marauders are regional bound after capturing the conference title in Creighton on Nov. 10-11.

The Marauders rolled through the round robin tournament with a perfect 3-0 record, as they knocked off Meath Park two sets to one and Creighton and Sen. Allan Bird two sets to none each.

Thanks to their conference title the Marauders now move on to the 3A East Regional tournament on their home floor Nov. 17-18.

3A East Conference 2 The St. Brieux Crusaders are regional bound after finishing second at the conference tournament played on their home floor on Nov. 9.

The Crusaders wrapped up the small round robin tournament with a record of 1-1 as they fell two sets to none against Osler VCA before knocking off Rosthern JC two sets to none.

Thanks to their second place finish, the Crusaders turn their attention to the 3A East Region tournament in Birch Hills Nov. 17-18.

3A East Conference 3 The Colonsay Colts followed the same script as the Crusaders did finishing second on their home floor on Nov. 11 to earn a trip to the regional tournament.

Much like the Crusaders, the Colts finished the tournament with a 1-1 record as they fell two sets to none against Ecole Canadienne before knocking off LCBI two sets to none.

Thanks to their second place finish the Colts will also travel to Birch Hills Nov. 17-18 for the 3A East Region tournament.

Financial literacy prepares youth for being on their own

With a little over six months left before graduation season, grade 12 students at Englefeld School got a lesson in money management before they head off into the world.

Grade 7-12 students all took part in a financial literacy workshop on Nov. 9 care of members from local financial institutions where

they talked about budgeting, credit cards, savings, and big ticket taxes.

Deanna Miskolczi, the Branch Manager with Englefeld Affinity Credit Union says financial literacy is not only good for the students but also good for the community as they will be able to cut down on personal debt by being financially aware.

Miskolczi got interactive with the students with a

budgeting calculator and a couple scenarios that students could one day find themselves in, either as students or working adults.

“They really found out what the costs were of things, it really opened their eyes.”

The range of ages meant for interesting discussion with the grades 11-12 already considering their financial independence.

living at home and mom and dad are paying those expenses. There’s really not a need for them to really think about it or concern themselves with it.”

Knowing where their money is going is the first aspect of budgeting that Miskolczi wanted the students to think about. Looking at a bank balance will not give the whole picture of someone’s financial situation, so the students have to understand the need for paying bills first and then paying themselves for savings or emergencies.

“I know it’s tough when they start out because there’s really isn’t a ton of extra cash.”

Jamie Richardson and Karen Romanuik with RBC Royal Bank in Humboldt were also on hand to talk about the different aspects of financial literacy.

“It’s probably one of the most confusing topics that people have as adults,” says Richardson, but if they have an opportunity to learn the basics early, they may not have so many problems down the road.

The credit card is going to be one of the first pieces of credit students are going to get down the road, says Romanuik, which is why they wanted to talk specifically about keep themselves

financially stable.

“It’s important for kids to have a good understanding of what it is and why they have it and what it’s intended to do...as soon as they walk into a store, everyone wants to hand them one as soon as they turn 18.”

It is not like they could not have 10 of them, says Romanuik but they need to know how to manage them.

Teaching them early to limit their purchases for when they do have the money to spend is the first step in keeping students and youth adults out of the debt hole of having to continually pay interest, says Romanuik.

Speaking with the students after, Englefeld teacher Cori Harcourt says the students were very engaged and could not wait to go and speak with their parents about what they had learned.

Making sure that parents and teachers speak with their kids about financial literacy and financial planning is important when they are out on their own and being financially independent.

“Kids are so used to seeing us pay with plastic that the value of money is equivalent to the value of that piece of plastic. It’s our job as parents to teach them more about financial literacy, and it has to begin at home.”
