Checking it off the bucket list

It was a night of influences at the last Performer’s Cafe of 2015 at the Humboldt and District Gallery on Nov. 19. Melfort’s Jodie Hergott took the headline spot for the first time along with bandmates from 40oz Philosophy.

For Hergott, it all started with a guitar when she was 12 but took off with an application to the Bruno Cherry Festival talent con. “Cori Norman came into my place of work with an application and said ‘you need to do this girl.’�

Hergott says she was shaking like a leaf but ended up winning a photo session at Reflections by Richard and studio time where she put together a Christmas CD. Headlining her first show is something she can now cross off her bucket list, she says. “This was small and intimate and was the perfect setting,� she says.

The crowd was warm and receptive says Hergott, singing along with Hergott’s mix of classic country and modern pop.

All the songs influenced Hergott in some way she says. Bring a self identifying Christmas fanatic,

Hergott was sure to add 6 Christmas songs into the line up with her own twists.

The newer ones like Little Big Town’s Girl Crush, Adele’s Rolling in the Deep, and Elle King’s Ex’s & Oh’s were songs that stuck with Hergott in one way or another. Girl Crush was so controversial in the United States it was banned in some southern radio stations. Hergott bugged the boys in the band to learn it because it was such a haunting tune. Hergott says her and the band have a lot of fun learning new songs. “These boys are talented. Once you sit them down with something it doesn’t take them long to pick it up.�

Along with Hergott was fellow bandmates Brett Hrynewich from Melfort playing lead guitar and mandolin, Derek Kozar on lead guitar and Brian Grest on vocals, bass and sometimes even picking up the acoustic guitar.

Drummer Nathan Gregg had work commitements and could not make the performance.

Baba’s Babushka: A Magical Ukrainian Christmas author Marion Mutala (pictured on next page) was also at the Performer’s Cafe to compliment headliner

Jodie Hergott.

Mutala’s books tells of Ukrainian traditions; her first being about Christmas traditions, her next about Easter traditions and her most recent one about wedding traditions.

Her stories follow the adventures of Natalia, a young Ukrainian girl in rural Saskatchewan who is excited for Ukrainian Christmas. Through a magical babushka, she travels to Ukraine and visits her grandmother as a young girl who tells her all about Ukrainian traditions.

The Christmas book was published in 2010 but is ten years in the making, says Mutala. “When I submitted it for publishing, (I was told) I have enough for five books.�

Mutala shared part of the story as well as Ukrainian culture and pictures from her own Ukrainian Christmas.

Sharing your culture is a big part of bringing peace to the world, says Mutala. “The more we learn about each other, we educate people. When we educate people, it develops tolerance, love and peace.�

Even though she has not been a teacher for 30 years, Mutala sees her books as teaching tools.

Staying positive in the face of cancer

No one needs to talk to Curtis Grudnitzki and his wife Jolene, nee Schmidt, to see the kind of special people they are.

Everyone could see that just by watching the town of Lanigan file into their Nov. 21 fundraiser.

Planned by Jolene’s sister, Kaylyn Bartel, their hometown gathered to support the couple on their journey through Curtis’s cancer.

Curtis and Jolene says that they were overwhelmed by the support they received.

“There were 10, 15 people here (to start), and then I turned around and there were 100 people already.”

Says Curtis.

When Kaylyn started planning their fundraiser, Curtis says he definitely was not expecting the support they got.

Originally from Regina, Curtis says Lanigan has became his second home.

“I’ve had people come up and touch me on the shoulder and I’m like, ‘I don’t know who you are’ but they know me. It’s awesome.”

Curtis says positive energy is what keeps him going.

“If you’re sitting low on the situation, it’s only going to bring you down faster,” Curtis says.

“Laughter has been the best medicine,” adds Jolene.

They speak openly about Curtis’s diagnosis and treatment.

It all started back in March when Curtis developed a cough that would not go away.

After numerous trips to the walk in clinic behind their house, Jolene says doctors kept on giving him something for the common cold. On Apr. 11, it became much worse. Curtis went to bed early but could not catch his breathe.

“The breathes were long and deep and I just couldn’t get the breathe in. (Jolene) looked me all scared and I said, ‘okay, let’s go to emerg. There’s something obviously wrong.”

Doctors went through many possible diagnosis in the 5 day span Curtis and Jolene were there before finding lumps on his lymph nodes the size of golf balls which was restricting Curtis airway. Curtis says he thought the lumps were just from his cold or a trip they recently took to the Bahamas.

Test the lumps would lead to a colonoscopy, just to pass the time, Curtis laughs.

That is when they discovered what was wrong.

Stage 4 colon cancer with 6 months to a year to live and chemotherapy for the rest of his life.

Now after 15 rounds of chemo, including receiving one during the fundraiser, Curtis has past the 6 months mark and feels goods, even dancing with Jolene at the fundraiser to Donny Parenteau playing live in the background.

With orders from doctors not to work, Curtis had more time to fish, he says. The day after he received his first chemo treatment, Curtis, hooked up with his chemo bottle, went out in the boat with his dad and his brother. A lot of times he went with Jolene.

“I have a good boat operator,” he laughs, pointing

Curtis says the first nights with chemo are the worst with all the chemicals going into your body. By the second nights, Curtis says it’s like he’s not even receiving anything. His doctors have even commented on whether they’ve actually given him anything since he is tolerating it so well, says Curtis.

Those golf ball sized lumps are down to the size of small marbles and he can breathe better. Doctors have told Curtis to keep on doing what he is doing.

ing herbal teas; especially dandelion tea, and having a lot of love and laughter in his life, Curtis is staying positive about his cancer.

Curtis is looking forward to getting back to work, he says, with cabin fever setting in, especially with the snow on the ground.

“You can only do so much at home.”

Curtis has said he’s gotten his ice fishing gear ready to go.

Jolene has had to keep on working during Curtis’s treatment. Bartel planned the fundraiser so Jolene can take some time off and spend time with her husband.

“I wanted them to enjoy this last time together. I don’t care if they spend the money going to Mexico, I want them to have fun.”

Curtis fit right in with his in-laws, says Bartel, so his diagnosis has been a blow for Jolene’s family.

“He’s very redneck, camo everything. When this came upon we were just heartbroken.”

Curtis’s mother is still trying to process the diagnosis, he says. Everyone has been very supportive.

“Dad’s there for me every chance he gets. He’s there and if he’s at work, he’ll drop it and come straight to the house.”

Bartel says that they raised 18,359 for Curtis and Jolene.

Local history through stained glass

Onlookers got a chance to tour the newly renovated St. Peter’s Cathedral on Nov. 22 to see the new stained glass windows designed and installed by Prairie Glass’s Elaina Adams. The windows are dedicated to original pioneer families of the Humboldt area.

The building is 105 years old and looking better than ever.

Especially with uniquely detailed stained glass windows adorning the St. Peter’s Cathedral outside of Muenster.

Nov. 22 was a night to celebrate the parishioners and pioneers that those windows were dedicated to, with the last window being installed around October this year.

Christy Waldner who worked on the stained glass window project says that before they installed the stained glass, they just had mac tac, which didn’t look nice.

“It didn’t fit in with the beauty of the church,” says Waldner, “which was another motivation.”

Elaina Adams of Priaire Glass was the artist behind the new stained glass windows everywhere in the cathedral, from the choir loft to the sacristy.

She worked with the families to produce works that reflect the history of the area and the history of the family.

“For the most part, I was able to do whatever the family requested down to horses and cows in some of the windows.”

Upper windows close to the ceiling line were ones that could not have too much detail so some requests could not be filled.

Lower windows at eye level were a little more forgiving when it came

to adding details into the design, says Adams.

“That’s where I said you guys could do whatever you want in this section because if it is highly detailed, it would be very visible.”

The prairie landscape was a theme that the families and the committee focused on considering the history of the area.

Adams says that everyone has pioneer stories and these windows will tell that story for years to come.

“These windows and these stories are still going to be relevant even 100 years from now. This is still going to be a relevant part of our history.”

Working with glass to create a picture is different than painting, says Adam.

It’s not just blending to get the colours you need but going through the glass you have and deciding the colour that works.

“That can make it more challenging because I do have a limited range. And when I say limited, it’s still thousands of colours.”

It is about having the right kind of glass, and picking it all out, says Adams. But she does have fun with it.

Technique wise, there were many different ways to work with glass and Adams worked with many different forms.

fact that it is a church setting but Adams incorporated other techniques as well.

“Because of the detail, I did incorporate more contemporary methods too, like copper foil and fusing.”

This has been the biggest project for Adams to date. Working with Ralph Britz and the committee on the restoration project was a treat, she says, especially when Britz and her spoke the same language.

“He spoke the language I was speaking in terms of installation, ventalation.

I know they were properly installed.”

Adams says she would not have been able to complete the project without her helpers, especially Emily Sterling, who has been a key part in building the

windows, says Adams.

Renovations started in 2008. Through giving local families the opportunity to purchase windows in the cathedral and dedicate them to families that helped settle the area, the renovations were completed funded without any loans.

All the renovations were done by local tradesmen who volunteered time and equipment to the project.

If they were paid, the asked for a discounted rate, says Waldner.

“They didn’t charge the going rate.

Everything was cost effective and lots of volunteer.”

The current building was built in 1910 and was the centre of St. Peter’s colony.

Larson says she tries to encourage producers to get their herd out of the yard for a portion of the year because that is going to be cheaper feed.

Feed quality, proper shelter, water available are also highly recommended when it comes to forage feeding cattle.

The other option that Larson mentioned is purchasing replacements.

Larson says producers should educate themselves before buying from other herds, especially when purchasing a lot of animals.

“Go visit their place and see how their females look, especially even with calves at side because that gives you a good sense of what you’re going to be picking from.”

No matter how the farmer chooses, there are alway going to be opportunity costs; the loss of revenue from choosing something else.

Larson says producers need to value their labour too when discussing opportunity costs.

“What could you realistically make in your area doing something differently? I usually like producers to value their time in the range of $20$25/hour.”

Farmer ’s lose 15-20 per cent of females from their cow herds a year.

Kathy Larson, a beef economist with Western Beef discussed replacing those females at Farm World on Nov. 18.

There are many points to consider when selling or buying replacements and Larson wants producers to be aware of the costs involved.

“Everything from the revenue they forego in choosing to keep that calf rather than sell it and just making sure they are taking them through the winter and getting them to a proper weight.”

To keep cattle over winter and ensure they can be ready to breed, they have to be a certain size and weight to breed safely. Western Beef has already done some studies which; are available on the Western Beef website (http:// bit.ly/1QW4p23), into a rule of thumb that’s been around for the last 50 years, says Larson.

“The rule of thumb is… that your heifers need to be between 60-65 per cent of the mature cow weight at time of first breeding.”

The samples in the study were heifers weaned at 558 pounds and the target weight was 775 pounds by 2 years old.

Through studies done with Western Beef and surveying producers, Larson says that the biggest cost is going to be feed, “both what you feed and how you feed.”

The harsher elements of winter can mean a lot of environmental stress for cattle and higher feed costs. Larson presented a different study on drylot versus foraging which presented a big difference in feed and labour costs.

While foraging has lower costs on labour and equipment use, cattle extend more energy search-

ing for food. However, the price of feed is less when foraging.

“Pasture is your cheapest feed resource so we stress finding ways to extend your grazing season and do proper grazing management to get the best

Students a big part in ag fairs

Calvin Daniels It is the time of fall fairs in Canada.

The highlight shows are of course The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto, and the Canadian Western Agribition in Regina.

But there are others, including events in Edmonton, Brandon and Yorkton.

While the most obvious thread connecting the events is a focus on agriculture, but there is another which ultimately might be of greater importance.

Youth education has become an element of these events.

Student tours take place on a regular basis at such events, and that has been stated in this space before, educating young people about the truths of farming is important.

It might be well understood students in a major city such as Toronto are a long way removed from a farm where a cow is milked, or a chicken is laying eggs.

Such connections were of course common place in the days Canada was much more agrarian in nature.

Today farmers make up a very small portion of the population, and connections to those farmers are become less and less direct.

So the importance of education becomes ever more important.

The foremost reason such education is needed is obvious. People need to understand where their food comes from, and what it takes to get the food produced so that it arrives on the kitchen table in a safe, nutritious way.

But there is a secondary reason which should not go unrecognized, as it too is important.

There will always be a need for young people to find an interest in agriculture so that they may end up pursuing careers in the sector.

career operating a farm but it could mean working in crop sciences, or genetic research.

The people opting for such careers have often had a farm background.

Kendra Purton is an example. She grew up on a market garden farm near Yorkton. There she became interested in the environment, and followed that interest into university emerging in a science field, and has already been involved in research on the effect climate change might have on soils.

For Purton the roots of her career path were

planted on the farm.

But with less farmers, come less children. That means the agriculture sector jobs will need to increasingly be filled by people not coming from the farm.

So it becomes important to plant the seeds of knowledge about farming in our youth, in the hope some will take that knowledge and foster a deeper interest in the sector.

That will be essential as the sector is only as strong as the network of related professionals working on better ways to farm for tomorrow.

East Central government liquor stores to be sold

Six government liquor stores in the East Central will be among the 40 to be privatized by the provincial government.

To be privatized are stores in Kelvington, Lanigan, Wadena, Wakaw, Watson and Wynyard.

The privatization is part of a series of reforms to provincial liquor policy that includes 12 additional private liquor stores, having all stores run under one single set of rules instead of four, expanding product lines, expanding possible store hours, allowing off-sales to buy wholesale from the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority and allowing grocery stores to open in-house liquor outlets.

The changes will take place after the next provincial election. Don McMorris, the minister in charge of SLGA, said his government wanted to have broad consultations with lots of stakeholders before any change was made. “To do it for one day on an election

The Saskatchewan Government and General Employees’ Union, which represent liquor store employees, is totally against the move. “I think this is going to hit rural Saskatchewan quite hard,� said Donna Christianson, a union spokesperson.

She said there will be well-paying, family-supporting jobs eliminated that won’t be easily replaced.

McMorris said there’s a reason why the government chose those 40 stores out of the 75 it currently owns. “It was purely a business decision based on a matrix of their operating expenses compared to the revenue they generated,� he said, adding the decision wasn’t necessarily made based on profitability. “If they weren’t as efficient as some of the other ones, then they were on the list to be conPuzzle #795

McMorris said the conversion isn’t anything new, with both his party and the New Democrats doing it before. “The size is certainly new but it’s not like it hasn’t happened before, conversions from public to private,� he said.

Christianson said that understates the situation. “This is not a conversion,� she said. “This is an all out-and-out privatization of the liquor stores.�

With the previous conversion of four stores, the new owners had their prices set by the SLGA. Under the new system, Christianson said, all liquor stores will be competing and able to set whatever prices they want.

The new owners of the 40 privatized stores and 12 new private stores will be selected by the government via a request for proposal process.

As for the jobs at the privatized stores, McMorris said that would depend on the will of the new owners.

The Town of Watson knows the work that goes into a Santa Claus day, especially when it has been going on for 84 years.

Along with fun activiteis and games for both kids and adults, including an Amazing Santa Race, Turkey Shoots, sleigh rides and fireworks on Friday, participatf ing stores will stay open until 8:30 pm. Santa himsel will be available for photos at the CIBC on Friday night from 6:00 to 8:00 and making numerous visits around town on Saturday.

Winter Gala benefits Melfort shelter

This year’s North East Outreach and Support Services Winter Gala was hosted in Naicam on Nov. 21. A supper, entertainment provided by the Dueling Pianos, and cocktails, were all in an effort to raise funds for “House of Hope” Capital Campaign in the efforts to fund the Women’s Shelter in Melfort.

With a large turnout, and selling of upwards of 160 tickets(?), the night was an overall success for the campaign, bringing together communities and introducing the need for a shelter. A count is still being held for the funds raised at the Winter Gala.

Currently the campaign stands at having raised over $500,000 – putting them at just under the halfway mark of their current goal of $1.25 million. The North East Outreach and Support Services have been

valiantly raising the funds for the house, bringing in donations from all over in an attempt to hit their goal.

The Service, opened since 1984, has been contacted many times over the years for cases of domestic violence, bringing the agency to the decision to focus their efforts on meeting the needs of victims of interpersonal violence, says their website.

The agency is a non-profit organization, and received help from many volunteers, including Naicam School.

The shelter is not only in aid of women, but also children – giving them a safe environment and the support system needed to maintain and regain beneficial mental and physical health. The campaign hopes to aid the development of outreach services,

in-house programs, and the support needed for women and children that no longer need safe housing.

The need for shelter in North-East Saskatchewan has grown, due to high rates of domestic violence.

According to Statistics Canada, Saskatchewan and Manitoba had close to double the national rate of violence against women in 2011.

Tips for the designated driver (NC) Being the designated driver is a big deal and those who take on this role deserve some serious brownie points - redeemable at all good bars on nights when you’re not driving. It is also a big responsibility. You’re in charge of your friends’ safety, at a time when they may not be in their most safety-conscious state.

Lorie Phair, CEO of ingenie Canada, a telematics based auto insurance provider for drivers aged 16 to 24, suggests four things to keep in mind when you’re the designated driver: 1. Don’t drink and drive – ever.

Harsh but fair: one drink can lead to another and before you know it, four people are stranded. Or worse, they’re trying to convince you that you’re okay to drive. It’s quite simple: if you’re driving, don’t drink.

2. Finalize your passenger list in advance.

You don’t want a fight on your hands as “Can I get a ride?” time comes around. Piling in more people than there are seatbelts is a big no-no, it is dangerous and distracting.

3. Prepare for a battle.

Your friends are lovely, but no one is at their best after a few Jagerbombs. The chances of fighting, crying and getting sick are greatly increased, so be prepared. Don’t get involved in disagreements or tantrums − if they can’t behave, they can get a cab.

4. Have your fun where you can.

Being the only person not drinking can be a bit annoying, but if you look at it from a different perspective, there are a few perks. Sit back and enjoy the show! You may have some good stories to tell your friends that they won’t necessarily remember. Also, being the most attractive member of your group is guaranteed by about 10 p.m.

Tips for the designated driver (NC) Being the designated driver is a big deal and those who take on this role deserve some serious brownie points - redeemable at all good bars on nights when you’re not driving. It is also a big responsibility. You’re in charge of your friends’ safety, at a time when they may not be in their most safety-conscious state.

Lorie Phair, CEO of ingenie Canada, a telematics based auto insurance provider for drivers aged 16 to 24, suggests four things to keep in mind when you’re the designated driver: 1. Don’t drink and drive – ever.

Harsh but fair: one drink can lead to another and before you know it, four people are stranded. Or worse, they’re trying to convince you that you’re okay to drive. It’s quite simple: if you’re driving, don’t drink.

2. Finalize your passenger list in advance.

Plunkett news

By Deloris Sutherland Correspondent Halloween night here in town was very quiet.

We didn’t even have one little one show up. So we have to treat our company when they show up.

Well the time has changed in several provinces, and we stay the same.

Snow is in the forecast for this week. Then the deer hunter can find their deer or moose.

Well between watching curling last week and the world series the week few by.

Plunkett folks and friends send their deepest sympathy to the family of Mrs. Laura (Frank) Solmes of Saskatoon and formerly of Viscount

on her recent passing.

Last week there were 2 moose spotted in the Brithdur church yard by folks.

The Plunkett Friendship folks held their pot luck on the first Tuesday in November and it was a lovely meal. Folks enjoyed games of Kaiser after it. Any one is welcome to come. It is always a fun evening out.

Last week Ken & I had attended a Soup and Sandwich luncheon for Telemiracle at Watrous Civic Centre, and there was also a crafe sale there with lots of beautiful displays.

The Plunkett Fowl supper was held on Sunday, November 1st with a nice crowd of folks.

Several ladies from town were here to Viscount

last week working on sewing squares together and some times they come to town here and these are “Blankets for Canada” that we work on.

Recently here visiting us was Luther and Florence Gray of Saskatoon, and they also visited in Viscount with Ervin Credgeur and they also visitied with Dennis & Leona Credgeur, and went to Humboldt to visit family members there.

Tanis Crawford of Meadow Lake is away to Rome, Italy to visit with a friend there.

Here is someone’s wish, They would like to live in a world where mosquitoes would suck FAT instead of blood.

The future of sustainable ag

The agriculture industry has become a heavy user of plastics.

Patricia Lung with PAMI presented responsible recycling options at FarmWorld on Nov. 18. She is seeing a lot of reasons why farmers need to be responsible for their plastic waste.

“It has too much potential for doing mega damage if it’s something that goes on indefinitely.” Says Lung.

Besides limiting environmental impacts of twine and net wrap, improper disposal of these plastics are having detrimental effects on farm and wildlife as well.

“It doesn’t digest, it doesn’t breakdown.” Says Lung. “Recent vet autopsies have opened up unexplained deaths and have found this pocket (of plastic) in their digestion tracked.”

The animal is literally starving to death, says Lung. And if animals such as cattle are getting into it, who is to say that deer, elk, moose, or birds are not getting into as well.

“If this is not being recycled and moved away and left in piles and there is residual seed in there, there is a high probability that during a tough winter, you’re going to end up with wildlife being heavily impacted.”

Plastic recycling initiatives that are farm focused have to be time and cost effective for farmers, and more appealing than gasoline and a match, says Lung.

Grain bags and twine are recyclable, says Lung, but net wrap is not.

However, Lung says, they do have the possibility of energy capture.

gram of gasoline at 46 megajoules, says Lung Burning net wrap without proper incinerators can have air, soil and water contamination possibilities.

However, promoting sustainable disposal of agricultural plastic is different compared to household waste.

The shear volume of plastic used on the farm is not easy to take to a recycling facility.

Bruce Nordick at Grain Bags Canada in Humboldt says one grain back can be 300-400 lbs and be 10 feet wide by 300 feet long.

Simply Ag shipped 1,871,000 pounds of plastic from grain bags and twine from their 13 collection sites across the province.

A lot of it is a time management issue with packaging and delivery of plastic takes away from other responsibilities on the farm, says Lung.

A big challenge with Saskatchewan recycling programs is the distance either farmers or collections agencies have to travel to dispose of plastics. It is an easier process in bigger centres, says Lung.

Right now, there are 14 sites across Saskatchewan that will take in plastics like grain bags and twine. Farmers are supplied with plastic bags for their own transport but Simply Ag has been advised that they are too small and not very durable for farm needs, says Lung.

Simply Ag is trying to make that better for farmers with the attempt at incorporating more pick up sites and better packaging options.

Another solution that has been suggested by farmers is having bins right on individual farms that will be picked up when they are full.

Obituaries ALTICE: Ruth Barbara Dec. 29, 1932 - Nov. 12, 2015 The death of Ruth Barbara Altice of Parkland Place, Melfort, SK, (and formerly of Naicam, SK), occurred at her residence on Thursday, November 12, 2015. She was 82 years of age. Ruth was born on December 29, 1932, to Lawrence and Blanche (nee Bodi) Altice at home on the family farm west of Lac Vert, SK. She attended Roanoke Country School near Lac Vert, which had been named by her father after the town in Virginia he had come from.

After completing her education, Ruth remained on the family farm and aided in caring for her mother and brothers. She loved nature and the outdoors and spent many pleasurable hours gardening, picking berries, and watching the birds. Ruth was especially fond of owls, horses, cats and dogs. Of great importance to her was attending Jehovah’s Witnesses conventions and the regular meetings at Kingdom Hall. The children there were very dear to her and she delighted in treating them with candy. In 1990, Ruth moved into Naicam and lived in her own “cozy little home�. Eventually, she relocated to Churchview Lodge in Naicam. A few years ago, due to failing health, she became a resident of Parkland Place in Melfort. Ruth adjusted very well there and enjoyed her new home. Ruth had a sincere love for God. This love prompted her to study the Bible. Jehovah God’s beautiful promises for our future touched her heart. She was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses on October 27, 1972. Ruth looked forward to the time when God’s Kingdom Government (Daniel 2:44; Matthew 6:10) will restore our earth to a paradise, and humans to perfection (Isaiah 35:5,6; Isaiah 65:21,22). Ruth will be lovingly remembered by one sister, Irene Crozon of Humboldt, SK; and by numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Lawrence and Blanche (nee Bodi) Altice; four brothers: James, George, Roy and Fred; and by four sisters: Iris, Helen, Lila and Vivian. The Funeral Service was held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Naicam, on Monday, November 16, 2015, at 2:00 p.m., officiated by Alvin Troop. The memorial table attendant was Laura Bailie. Honorary pallbearers were “all those who shared in Ruth’s life�. Active pallbearers were Kathy Crozon, Wayne Crozon, Matthew Crozon, Wanda Lefebvre, Darla Christianson, and Harvey Christianson.

Interment followed at the Naicam Town Cemetery. Memorial donations may be directed to either Kingdom Hall or the Naicam Ambulance Fund.

Schuler-Lefebvre Funeral Chapel, Humboldt, SK. BOYKO: Nellie The death of Mrs. Nellie Boyko (nee Bilan), 96 years, of Saskatoon and formerly of the Watson/Quill Lake area occurred on Monday, November 16, 2015. Nellie was born on April 11, 1919 at Lorlie, SK to Steffan and Justina (nee Shirpowich) Bilan. She grew up on the farm there and attended the local country school. On March 16, 1945, Nellie married John Boyko. They farmed north of Quill Lake, where she was kept busy with the farming duties, growing a large garden and raising their two sons. Nellie and John were active members of the Wimmer, Quill Lake and Watson churches, communities and farming area. In 1974, they retired and then moved to Saskatoon the following year. John passed away in 1981 and Nellie remained living on her own until just several months ago when she became a resident of St. Joseph’s Home. Nellie enjoyed gardening and loved her beautiful flowers. She loved when her family would gather and she would cook a large traditional Ukrainian dinner for them all to share. Nellie had a great sense of humour which she shared with family and friends. She was a very open and accepting person, always willing to help someone in need. Her faith was very important to her and she lived it daily. Nellie was a Godly example of how you should live and treat others. She was always very proud and supportive of her sons and grandchildren. Nellie will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her two sons, three grandchildren and two great grandchildren: Peter Boyko of Regina; and Robert (Betty) Boyko of Sherwood Park, AB and family, Steven (Tiffany) Boyko and son Wyatt of Edmonton, Sarah Boyko of London, England, and Jill (Jake) Scholtz and son Austin of Sherwood Park, AB; brother Eli (Stella) Bilan of Calgary; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Steffan and Justina Bilan; five sisters and two brothers: Mary (Harry) Banias, Katie (Peter) Slipetz, Peter (Violet) Bilan, Tenie (Victor) Unikowsky, Anne (Mike) Fedak, Olga (Nick) Unilowsky, and Michael Bilan. The Funeral Service for Nellie was held on Monday, November 23, 2015 at 11:30 a.m. at New Horizon Senior Center, Watson, officiated by Pastor Karl Kienle. The interment followed in St. Michael Ukrainian Orthodox Cemetery, Watson officiated by Rev. Fr. Michael Faryna. Memorial donations in Nellie’s memory may be made to the Humboldt Food Bank or to a charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Malinoski & Danyluik Funeral Home.

BERTING: Bernice Mathilda Jun. 16, 1931 - Nov. 14, 2015 The death of Mrs. Bernice Mathilda (nee Merkowsky) Berting of St. Mary’s Villa, Humboldt, SK, occurred at her residence on Saturday, November 14, 2015. She was 84 years of age.

Bernice was born on June 16, 1931, to Michael and Elizabeth (nee Suchan) Merkowsky at home on the family farm near Burr, SK. She grew up on the farm and attended Willow Ridge School. After completing Grade 8, Bernice stayed home to help on the farm. She then began working at Delux Cleaners for her brother-in-law, Ben Fortowsky. While attending a dance, she met Ernie Berting who was playing in his orchestra, Ernie and the Rhythm Ramblers. They were married on July 21, 1952, in St. Scholastica R.C. Church, near Burr. Their first home together was in Pleasantdale, SK. They also lived in Melfort, Estevan, and eventually returned to Humboldt where they continued to reside. A hard-working woman, as well as being a devoted homemaker for her husband and children, Bernice worked numerous jobs at the same time. During those years, she assisted Ernie with his various businesses, from working in the office of Royalite Oil, working for the Wolverine/Humboldt Rural Telephone Company, driving the mail truck, helping to operate Humboldt Lanes which they bought in 1975, and being an auctioneer clerk, to maintaining the apartment building they owned. Evenings were about as busy as the days.

After attending square dances, Ernie became a caller. That took him and Bernice to various towns instructing at different clubs.

Community-minded people, as busy as their schedules were, around 1972 they joined the Jaycees/Jaycettes and also worked for Futuristic Industries. From 1972 to 2010, Bernice boarded two sisters, Martha and Adeline Menz, who worked at Futuristic.

As well, for a number of years, Bernice worked at Nutter’s Bulk Foods. Over the years, Bernice pursued a number of hobbies and interests. She loved dancing, bowling, walking, fishing, gardening, crocheting, knitting, and playing cards and games. Bernice leaves many fond and heart-warming memories to cherish.

She had a vibrant personality, a quick wit with a dry sense of humor, was a great hostess who loved to entertain, and was an interesting story-teller. As well, we will never forget her immaculate appearance, perfect hairdo, and beautiful smile at all times.

Due to failing health, in December 2011, Bernice moved into Birch Manor at Bethany Pioneer Village in Middle Lake and, two years later, became a resident of Aspen Manor at Bethany. A final move was made in December 2014 to St. Mary’s Villa, her home until the present. Bernice will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her three daughters and three grandchildren: Diann Berting and daughter Stacey Berting, and Joan Berting, all of Humboldt, SK, and Bev (Curtis) Demmert and children Kayli Demmert and Troy Demmert, all of Warman, SK; one sister, Lorna (Ozzie) Lutz of Lanigan, SK; sister-in-law, Marie Merkowsky of Humboldt; in-laws of the Berting family; and by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, Ernie Berting (September 10, 1995); parents, Michael and Elizabeth (nee Suchan) Merkowsky; and by four sisters and two brothers: Mary (Ben) Schiminowsky, Isabel (Ben) Fortowsky, Elizabeth (Joe) Kosokowsky, Alfred Merkowsky, Leonard Merkowsky, and Hilda (Eric) Langner. The Funeral Mass was offered at St. Augustine R.C. Church, Humboldt, on Thursday, November 19, 2015, at 2:00 p.m., celebrated by Fr. Cosmas Epifano, OSB. Others taking part were: Curtis Demmert, crossbearer; Ozzie Lutz and Margaret Fortowsky, scripture readers; Laura Kosokowsky, intentions; Kayli Demmert and Troy Demmer t, giftbearers; Johanna Merkowsky and Josephine Stroeder, memorial table attendants; Stacey Berting, Kayli Demmert and Troy Demmert, urnbearers; and Bev Demmert, eulogist. Music ministry was provided by director Loretta Schugmann, organist Dolores Hinz, and the St. Augustine Parish Funeral Choir. Honorary pallbearers were “all those who shared in Bernice’s life�. Beating those winter blues

By Dr. Megan Parker, ND Health Columnist Now that winter has hit, you may hear people complain about suffering the â&#x20AC;&#x153;winter bluesâ&#x20AC;? or a seasonal funk. But what exactly does that mean?

Seasonal affective disorder, or SAD as itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s more commonly referred, is a form of depression that is related to changes in seasons. It occurs in a seasonal pattern that is usually worse in late fall and winter. Because SAD is a subset of depression it can cause symptoms of feeling depressed or hopeless, low energy, decreased interest in activities, sleep problems, or difficulty concentrating.

Other common symptoms associated with SAD include irritability, low energy and feeling tired, difficulties in social interactions, increased sensitivity, a heavy feeling in the body, appetite changes like an increased craving for high carbohydrate content foods, and weight gain.

It is estimated that approximately 6% of the population is affected by seasonal affective disorder.

Most individuals suffering from seasonal affective disorder will have worsening of their symptoms during cold winter months, as well cloudy or dreary days.

Their mood will improve and symptoms will diminish when the sun peeks through the clouds. There are also

varying degrees of seasonal affective disorder in that you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t need to meet the criteria for clinical depression, but even a change of symptoms or depletion of mood or energy can be an indication of SAD. At this point there is currently no known cause for seasonal affective disorder, but there are multiple factors that come into play. One factor contributing to SAD is our bodyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s circadian rhythm or internal clocks.

A third factor contributing to symptoms of SAD would be disruptions to our bodyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s melatonin levels. Melatonin is secreted in our body when we are exposed to darkness, which makes us sleepy. The problem comes in when it gets dark early in the evening as we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t go to bed for a few hours after, the levels of melatonin in our body start to become imbalanced. It is believed that a combination of these factors make us more prone to develop symptoms of SAD. Vitamin D levels can also have a huge impact on moods and depression, especially during the winter months. Vitamin D is the sunshine vitamin that makes us feel good. Unfortunately because we live so far north of the equator, we are only able to produce vitamin D from the sun during summer months and only for short periods of the day. Many people in Saskatchewan have lows levels of vitamin D which can worsen symptoms of seasonal affective disorder. During the winter months, it can be helpful to supplement with vitamin D, but it is best to speak to your doctor to know how the right dose for you.

The light therapy mimics natural outdoor lights that helps to rebalance our internal circadian rhythms as well as produce chemical changes in our brains that improve our moods. The lights used for phototherapy are over 80 times brighter than normal indoor lighting.

Daily use of a special light therapy lamp can be tremendous in the treatment of SAD. Exercise is also fantastic for those suffering from seasonal affective disorder. Exercise stimulates the production of serotonin, the feel good hormone, which helps improve moods and energy levels. Regular exercise is also great for lessening stress and anxiety, which can worsen any symptoms of depression. The more you can get moving, the happier your body will be this winter.

Getting outdoors is also important to help lessen symptoms of SAD. Natural light helps to rebalance our body and our internal rhythms. The more time we spend outdoors in natural sunlight, the less likely we will notice mood and energy changes associated with a change in seasons. Even on a cloudy day, being outdoors, breathing fresh air and spending time in nature will help improve moods.
