Interns join forces in Leroy to plan summer program

The summer interns in Leroy already knew each other before they started working together. But their collaboration of the Leroy summer programs made all their jobs easier.

Pauline Sarmiento, Cassidy Oesch and Czarina Dungo are all summer interns all over town and were encouraged to work together on planning activities and themed weeks for the kids of Leroy. Sarmiento and Oesch were already working together as the library intern and the rec board intern, but they decided to take it one step further to include Dungo, the museum intern.

“When we got together, we worked to find ways to include all of the places,” says Oesch.

activities that included trips to both the library and the museum and physical activity.

The interns had the chance to be creative with their themed weeks, including a water themed week with sponge dodgeball, Throwback week which was their own little Pioneer days with costumes and a trip to the museum and a Hollywood week with the kids making their own movie.

All three interns say things ran a lot smoother when it was the three of them together.

“It’s very complementary to work together instead of apart,” says Oesch.

It was a lot of good cop, bad cop, Oesch laughs, one of us is good at keeping the kids in line while another one of us is good at making up creative games.

Learning from each other was a big benefit for the three interns.

Sarmiento is the oldest of the three and she says she learned a lot from the younger girls, especially when

it comes to meeting people in the community.

“It’s easier to interact with people in town,” she says, “with their help I became more known and now the kids know my face.”

Getting the Filipinos involved was also a major goal for Sarmiento, who is also Filipino. Prior to being a summer intern, she was in charge of the Raise the Roof campaign for Leroy and successfully got more Filipinos involved. She wanted to do the same with the summer programs.

“There is a huge influx of Filipino going into Leroy right now and most people who live here already get confused with, ‘oh, there’s another one we haven’t met before.’”

Inviting them out into the community, especially newly arrived ones, benefitted everyone in town, including both Filipino and white children, Sarmiento said.

She recalls explaining respectful pronouns to the white kids, as all the Filipino children referred to her as ‘Ate’, big sister. This was something new for the white children since respect focused pronouns are not a thing in English.

The lowdown on food additives and preservatives

These days when people look at the information labels on their foods, there seem to be more and more unfamiliar ingredients. Very few people know what those ingredients actually are and what potential health risks they may pose.

Those unfamiliar ingredients can usually be categorized into two different groups: food additives, which are used to make food taste better; and food preservatives, which are used to make food last longer. Some common examples of food additives would be trans fats, MSG, artificial sweeteners, and high fructose corn syrup. Some common preservatives would be sodium nitrate (a type of salt), sulfites, BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene) and BHA (Butylated hydroxyanisole), and sodium benzoate. Despite the big words, food preservatives aren’t usually that bad, unlike the additives.

“The three things that bring out the flavour in a product are salt, sugar, and fat. So that’s why a lot of processed foods will be loaded with one of those,” said Andy McAnally of Causeway Natural Health. “So when you see something that’s advertised as low fat, they have to change the formula somewhat so that it still tastes good. So if it says low fat, it’ll be high in sugar or high in salt because

those are the three magic ingredients.”

The Food and Drugs Act of Canada regulates the types of food additives and their amounts that companies are permitted to produce the food. According to McAnally, however, companies have found a loophole in the regulations.

By decreasing the serving size on their nutrition information, they can legally stay within the permitted amount of additives.

“When the law was brought in to restrict trans fats, what some companies did was keep the same amount of trans fats in the product but cut the serving size down so it didn’t look like there were trans fats in the products,” said McAnally. “So instead of listing all the ingredients for one cup, they cut it down to half a cup. It’s just one of those loopholes.”

The body does not recognize food additives and so it either has a hard time breaking them down or can’t break them down at all. A trans fat like partially hydrogenated oil is twice as difficult for the body to break down as saturated fat and increase bad cholesterol while decreasing good cholesterol (yes, there is such a thing). They can cause heart disease, diabetes, and nutritional deficiencies, among other things. All around, they’re just bad, bad, bad. They can usually

be found in foods such as margarine, vegetable shortening, crackers, cookies, baked goods, salad dressing, breads, and chips.

Then there’s aspartame, also commonly referred to as Splenda, Sweet’N Low, or Equal. According to the American Cancer Society, the artificial sweetener aspartame breaks down into phenylalanine, aspartic acid, and methanol, the latter of which can be toxic in high quantities. There have been debates about it causing things like cancer and brain tumours, but the FDA discounted all of these theories. There’s also one other interesting side effect of sweeteners: “It tricks the tongue into thinking you’re actually getting something when you’re not,” said McAnally. “So the brain is getting the message that it’s tasting the sweetness, but there are calories, so you’re inclined to eat more carbs if you’re not getting the message that you’re actually consuming carbs.”

In other words, sweetener lulls people into believing they’re not consuming that evil sugar, which means they turn around and start consuming more carbs unknowingly.

Preservatives, on the other hand, aren’t all that bad. Salt is an old trick that even pioneers used to preserve their meat. Today, it can typically be found in canned vegetables and packaged meats.

Some preservatives aren’t too unhealthy, “depending on the type,” said Dr. Megan Parker of It Starts with Nature Health Clinic in Humboldt. “So something like pickles, using pickling

salt, that type of preservative isn’t all that bad for you, but you don’t want to be having high amounts of it. Something like a sulfate or sulfite, those types of preservatives are more man-made and added to foods that shouldn’t have to be kept for long periods of time. Sulfites are huge and can be found in meats like bacon, packaged meats, processed meats, sausage, hot dogs, things like those.”

According to Parker, rinsing off any canned vegetables should get rid of most of the preservatives, although there will still be trace amounts. Obviously, that option isn’t viable for packaged and processed meats, so it would be best to avoid them all together and stick to fresh meats.

When it comes to additives, it seems the safest route is – at it always has been – the more natural the food, the better.

If the food requires an ingredient label at all, it’s most likely processed, which means more additives and preservatives. The more (unfamiliar) ingredients there are, the less healthy it will likely be. There’s also a great chance that those foods will cause serious health concerns later on down the line if they’re consumed in excess. If a person simply can’t give up those cakes and cookies, the next best thing is to eat in moderation. “(The ideal is to) make the majority of our diet whole foods that we can understand the ingredient label or foods that don’t even require an ingredient label,” said Parker. “We can have those unrecognizable foods or processed and preserved foods as an occasional addition to that healthy diet.”

Getting politically involved is easier than you think It happens every time.

The writ is dropped, the Prime Minister calls an election and the groans begin; people complain ingabout their right to vote. The core activity of our democratic system.

In the 2011 federal election, voter turnout was 61.1 per cent. According to Elections Canada, 9.4 million Canadians didn’t cast a ballot.

Publically talking about politics, you get the typical excuses about why people didn’t vote.

‘I was busy that day.’

‘Why should I vote, my vote doesn’t count anyway.’

‘I know the previous guy is going to win so there is no point in my voting for someone else.’

‘I don’t care about politics enough to vote.’

To me, these excuses are the equivalent to 9.4 million sets of nails on a chalkboard.

I can understand the frustration.

Being in Saskatchewan, the only nonConservative MP is Ralph Goodale in the Wascana riding in Regina. And yes, I can see how this would discourage people from voting.

But if you’re thinking that a vote for anyone other than a Conservative MP is a waste of time, think again.

In the Saskatoon-Humboldt riding alone, 17998 votes were for someone other than Brad Trost.

Voting structure is on party radar but it takes constituents to raise the issue higher on their priorities list. A vote for a different party or even a spoiled ballot speaks louder than not voting at all. Working for Elections Canada in 2011, I learned

how votes are counted. Spoiled ballots are counted just as any other ballot, and in some provinces, you can refuse to vote out-right, which again still counts towards something.

Spoiled ballots still send a message. Ontario’s 2014 provincial election saw 22000 spoiled or refused ballots and people were talking about it. This may not seem like much in a province of 9.2 million eligible voters but if this was brought up to 9.4 million spoiled federal ballots, 302 MPs and thousands of other politicians, analysts and staffers would take notice.

The biggest misnomer that I see is the fact that people just say they don’t ‘like’ politics. You don’t have to like politics to become involved in politics.

Getting involved is easy. Getting informed enough to vote is easy. There are many ways you prepare yourself for the vote on October 19th.

I’ve heard it plenty of times. I’m not interested enough to vote. Half the time, it is not about liking politics as a whole but getting involved in one key point or issue that you care strongly about to get yourself started.

This is a great start to the bigger political picture.

Doing a little bit of research on a candidate or party is the easiest way to become more involved. At most, there will be 5 candidates in one riding not including independents. Google their names and have a look at their websites. At the least, you’ll find out your candidates names and party affiliation so this will not be a shock on election day.

At most, you’ll know the policies the candidate or party says they support and

can make a more informed decision standing in that election booth.

Voting is not the only form of political activity. Planning a march, a letter writing and petition campaign and talking to your MP are also ways for you to get involved in politics just as much as voting every four or more years.

If you want to take the one issue one step further than voting, make it an issue.

Tie in your charity work into politics by getting a local politician involved. See which party supports your specific charity and get the party itself involved. This

goes for all levels of government, not just federally.

Activism can work. Doing something to tell your politicians that more needs to be done can work. Democracy can work but only if people are willing to get involved even knowing the possibility of nothing changing.

Sometimes, whining about the flaws of the system feels better but doing something to change the system will get stuff done.

You just have to give it a try.

Letter to the editor The Humboldt Journal of Aug 5 has a photo of the new roof blown off the public school. All the world can see the white insulation, which should be all black had it properly glued on with tar.

In the late 1960s’, the Saskatchewan Department of Education held seminars for school trustees encouraging them not to build flat roofs because of recurring problems with blowing off and leaking. The lessons were short lived.

The Department of Social Services succeeded in avoising flat roofs on nursing homes with the exception of the first two phases of St. Mary’s Villa.

An experienced roofer told me several things: • Flat roofs are designed for California. Saskatchewan cold winters cause tar to contract and crack. Look at any

paved road, highway or parking lot.

• If you are dumb enough to build a flat roof in Saskatchewan, you MUST glue every one of the many layers top to bottom with tar. White insulation properly glued is black.

• You must take very special care at the edges where leaks and wind damage begins.

Imagine the embarassment of the roofer and supervising general contractor and overseeing architect to see their new roof take off like a kite and see a photo in the local paper showing why this could happen.

This is nothing compared to the frustration the taxpayer has seeing his money blowing in the wind.

Robotic Agriculture on the horizon

The idea of robotics in agriculture has long intrigued me.

It is an area I have long anticipated will change how farmers farm, although in some respects the impact to-date has been less than I would have anticipated had I been asked even a decade ago.

However, I suspect we are now very much on the cusp of some dramatic innovation in terms of robotic farming.

That is not surprising in the sense we have seen robots used in manufacturing for many years now, albeit they grow more sophisticated all the time. They tend to work well in an assembly line atmosphere with repetitive work elements handled by a computer program, whether that is welding spots on an automobile frame, or carrying out elements of dairy milking parlours.

But, robots are now becoming more advanced, meaning they are no longer restricted to stationary work stations.

Movement of robots is growing exponentially and that is opening up new opportunities to employ the technology.

We see automobiles now able to park themselves. Drivers simply give over control of the car to a computer and in the broadest terms the car becomes robotic. While questions regarding driver insurance and liability would seem to still be defined, it is not hard to envision a car being able to drive itself down the street to the grocery store, or workplace, with the former driver simply becoming a passenger. It is likely the technology is close, if not already possible.

We have also heard the

desire by Amazon.com to turn to flying drones for package delivery.

While that might be more crystal-balling at this point than a viable option, such drones would need to be highly autonomous in their actions to be useable for such deliveries.

Of course what makes both self-driving cars and delivery drones more reality than science fiction is the element of global positioning technology.

The use of GPS is something farmers are more than a little familiar with as it is a key element of precision farming in terms of spraying and fertilizing to the specific requirements of specific areas of a field.

Moving forward it is going to be GPS in tandem with robotics which has farm machinery crawling across fields monitored by a farmer sitting at a desk at home.

Today we see the ability of a farmer to utilize a driverless tractor pulling a grain cart across a field, its movement controlled by a computer on a combine, keeping the cart on a synchronous path.

The combine itself can actually travel down a field following a swath with little, or no steering from the driver.

The next steps in technology will take operators out of the tractor seat and into a role of monitor, pulling the plug from afar if a problem arises.

With farm employees harder to find based on the increasing tech training they require to operate modern farm equipment, and the costs associated with such labour, robotics machinery is going to find eager techadopters among farmers.

The cost saving in terms of labour and the ability of machines to operate longer hours because operator fatigue is eliminated as a limiting factor make the upcoming developments big in terms of farm efficient and bottom line.

The farm may not seem like the most likely place for robots to get an early foothold outside a factory setting, but that is very likely to be the case.

The back and forth of GMOs

Do an online search for genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and there is really no middle ground on opinion.

One side says they’re safe and useful, the other says it’s impossible to know what longterm effects there will be with anecdata about mutations and death. So what’s the deal with GMOs? Genetic modification is a breeding technique that uses modern biological sciences and computer technologies to alter the genes of a plant or animal using DNA from another living organism, bacteria, or viruses to introduce a desired trait.

Scientists can identify specific genes they want from one variety of plant or animal and copy that gene into a similar variety.

As an example, in Canada, the most common genetically modified crops are canola, corn, and soybeans. Canola is genetically modified to be herbicide tolerant so spraying it with a certain chemical doesn’t damage the plant. Corn and soybeans are genetically modified to be herbicide tolerant and insect resistant.

There are many common concerns with genetic modification, many of which are laid out in an anti-GMO website called The Institute For Responsible Technology (IRT).

In its FAQ, the site says, “The technology of genetic engineering is currently very crude.

It is not possible to insert a new gene with any accuracy, and

the transfer of new genes can disrupt the finely controlled network of DNA in an organism. Current understanding of the way in which DNA works is extremely limited, and any change to the DNA of an organism at any point can have side effects that are impossible to predict or control.”

But scientists in the field disagree with this assertion, including Stuart Smyth, an assistant professor at the University of Saskatchewan and a researcher in the field of agricultural biotechnology.

“That may have been a legit concern 20 or 25 years ago when the science was just beginning. Now I don’t think that’s credible in any way. The science has advanced so far and so rapidly,” Smyth said.

“The knowledge and the ability to identify specific genes of interest in various plant varieties means that they are able to be very precise in their ability to create new varieties … It’s certainly not a shot in the dark or anything like that.”

He also said that the science has evolved rapidly in the past 8-10 years with new plant breeding techniques that use more biological and computer innovations around genome sequencing to better understand the process. One such new innovation is CRISPR, a tool that allows scientists to edit genomes with more precision.

“The ability to apply the CRISPR tech to all kinds of plants in western Canada has

huge potential,” Smyth said.

The IRT FAQ says, “Genetic engineers continually encounter unintended side effects.

GM plants create toxins, react to weather differently, contain too much or too little nutrients, become diseased or malfunction and die. When foreign genes are inserted, dormant genes may be activated or the functioning of genes altered, creating new or unknown proteins, or increasing or decreasing the output of existing proteins inside the plant. The effects of consuming these new combinations of proteins are unknown.”

In Canada, genetically modified crops can undergo up to five years of testing. The

Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) does the majority of the testing. Whether it’s a university of private firm, each GMO undergoes three years of field trials to test safety, which includes looking at allergens and toxicity. On the agronomic side, the crops are tested for things like yield and disease resistance. All that data gets submitted to regulators who will then do a risk assessment, which takes 20-24 months. The regulators review the science and related publications. They do follow-ups with the developers and can demand additional studies and information.

“It’s a very rigorous risk assessment process,” Smyth said.

“Canada has, I would say, the

most rigorous assessment of any of the countries that have adopted GM crops.”

In addition, there have been almost 2,000 studies on the safety of GMOs, including a study by Alison van Eenennaam and Amy E. Young with the University of California, Davis that looked at a trillion genetically modified meals eaten by 100 billion animals (data that comes out to 29 years’ worth of meals from before and after the introduction of GMO crops) and found that genetically modified animal feed is safe and nutritionally equivalent to non-GMO feed.

Whatever your beliefs, it’s clear the GMO debate isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

Senior debt rising, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s avoidable

Due to a variety of factors, research has found that the rate of Canadian seniors going into debt has been climbing in recent years. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s such a big problem that the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada just launched a financial literacy strategy with the senior plan in it,â&#x20AC;? said Craig Fryzuk, a senior vice president with BDO Canada. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pretty indicative.â&#x20AC;?

Fryzuk has been seeing more seniors becoming insolvent in recent years. Insolvent in this context refers to a personâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s income being less than what they spend.

In 2014, 10 per cent of bankruptcies in Canada were for seniors aged 65 and up. This is an increase of 20 per cent from 2010.

Bankruptcy trustee firm Hoyes, Michalos & Associates Inc. looked at about 6,000 cases of insolvency in Ontario to find the â&#x20AC;&#x153;average insolvent debtor.â&#x20AC;? They found that people aged 50 and up accounted for 30 per cent of insolvency cases.

The Ontario Securities Commission (OSC) surveyed more than 1,500 Canadians over the age of 50 to put together a report on the financial state of older Canadians. It found that the sum of the biggest reasons for seniors taking on more debt is unexpected early retirement due to, for example, health issues and the fact that seniors are living longer. â&#x20AC;&#x153;People are living longer and have that much more going into retirement in order to allocate that across those extra years,â&#x20AC;? Fryzuk said.

The OSC found that six out of 10 Canadians experienced major life events that challenged their financial plans. The organization recommends that flexibility needs to be part of the planning discussion. Fryzuk tells the story of one man who had a

heart attack and could no longer work, and had to move to stay with family.

Another factor for senior debt is scams directed at the elderly. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think seniors arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t savvy about what not to do,â&#x20AC;? Fryzuk said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They can be a bit more exposed.â&#x20AC;?

In addition, Fryzuk sees seniors helping out adult children when they themselves donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have the money for it. â&#x20AC;&#x153;(Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll say) â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;I had a son or a daughter who got divorced, we need to help them out,â&#x20AC;&#x2122; or â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;my children couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t afford their childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s university so we helped them out,â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;People are just so generous. Their families are so tight and it means so much to them; theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re going to sacrifice what they can, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s to their own detriment â&#x20AC;Ś A lot of the time, they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t consider themselves. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s admirable, but I have to weigh in and say, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;look, this is where youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re going down the road.â&#x20AC;?

In this case, Fryzuk recommends that instead of offering money they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have, seniors consider offering their time (for childcare, etc.) and experience or connections with finding their adult children work. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s so tough for me when we see seniors where they just donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have a lot of options and thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what makes it so tough,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We as a society really want to help these people out and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s oftentimes just due to the rise in the cost of living.â&#x20AC;?

The number one thing Fryzuk recommends is to make a plan. Start with looking at how much income you have and predict how much money youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll have and whether youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be working to supplement your income. Then, look at how much money has to go out each month â&#x20AC;&#x201C; what are you paying for food, living, transportation, and paying back debt. After all that information is tallied,

then look at whether any changes are needed, such as trying to lower living expenses or considering moving in with somebody. And as tough as it is, seniors need to plan for a loss of independence. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve seen that a lot, where they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have the ability any longer to generate that income and they need to pay more money for healthcare,â&#x20AC;? Fryzuk said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They need to consider the additional costs of assisted living.â&#x20AC;?

He said itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also important to have an annual meeting to discuss these financial matters. It may be difficult and emotional, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s better in the long run. Seniors and their children can discuss their goals and how to reach them. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You have to plan. Eventually youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re going to die. Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s plan for it,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a very difficult taboo subject to talk about, but what you do during these annual family meetings is you take these difficult things out, then you have an agenda.â&#x20AC;?

These annual meetings should also include discussions about where the senior in question keeps his or her important documents, such as a will. This way, if their children have to take over the finances, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no confusion. Getting adult children involved also makes it easy for them to see what their parentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; financial situation is, so theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not counting on an inheritance that isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t there. Fryzuk said sometimes adult children make assumptions about inheritances and are surprised when the money isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t there. If theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re counting on that money, it could create another generation of financial problems.

Economists differ on how much money you should have upon retirement, and numbers range from $500,000 to $2 million. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I tend to agree with over a million for sure, if weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re going to be living another 25, 30 years I hope,â&#x20AC;? Fryzuk said.

Researcher wants to know what people do at lakes

Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a lot of data about water quality in Saskatchewan lakes available to researchers. Now, University of Regina student Lushani Nanayakkara, a PhD candidate in biology, is trying to find out how people use lakes. With this information, she hopes to gain insight into effective management practices of Saskatchewanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lakes. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have a very good idea of the water quality and natural science in-

formation. By doing this survey, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re hoping to get an idea about what folks are using the lakes for, what theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re concerned about if they have any concerns, and the general idea of how they should be managed and if they want to get involved themselves,â&#x20AC;?

As an example, if one lake is used primarily for swimming while another is used primarily for fishing, the lakes would be managed differently.

A lake for swimming requires good water quality, while one for fishing needs to help support fish populations.

She is primarily looking at lakes in the southern half of the province â&#x20AC;&#x201C; from north of Saskatoon to the U.S. border. Most lakes are in the Swift Current, North Battleford, and Humboldt-Wakaw area. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have all this water quality information and natural science information,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a way of gauging if people know whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s going on in the lakes and an attempt to get from academic research more into the applied side.â&#x20AC;?

She doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have a hard designated end date for her research, but is hoping to gather what she needs by early

October, and best-case scenario would have 1,000 surveys to work from.

From that information, Lushani will come up with a management framework, and says that framework will be a â&#x20AC;&#x153;synthesisâ&#x20AC;? of the two components of natural science and her research into the more recreational side. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s really important to get their perspective on these systems as well because I think the more knowledgeable as a community we are, we can better adapt to things like climate variability that leads to, for example, the sewage dump (in Humboldt) that was caused by heavy rainfall,â&#x20AC;? she said.

Cost of car maintenance – Cost of a crash With the myriad of expenses that we face every day, you may be tempted to put off vehicle maintenance to save a few bucks – and you certainly wouldn’t be alone – but is saving a few bucks worth risking your life?

On average, five people die on Canada’s roads each day. Though many of these collisions can be attributed to driving under the influence, driving distracted, or poor driving conditions, it would be ignorant to overlook the importance of the mechanical integrity.

Today’s cars are safer than ever before, but with wear and tear, many of your car’s critical safety components can degrade. Ignoring this fact can put you and your family at risk of having a collision or of being seriously injured in the event of a crash.

Brakes It’s no secret that your brakes are one of your car’s most important safety components, but with use, your brake pads/shoes wear out, rubber seals and hoses deteriorate causing brake fluid leaks, and metal component can rust and corrode. As these parts degrade, you are required to use an increasing amount of force on the pedal to stop your vehicle and need an increasing amount of time to stop. When you only have a few seconds to react to a dangerous situation on the road, the condition of your brakes can make all the difference, so have them inspected regularly and never put off needed repairs.

Lights Your lights are essential to ensuring proper visibility on the road. When driving, it is important that you can see and be seen to avoid collisions. Give yourself the best chance to arrive safely by regularly inspecting your lights and replacing them when necessary. You should also check your light covers to ensure that they are clean and clear. With the time, the plastic can degrade and cloud, distorting your light and reducing your field of view in the dark. The further you can see, the more time you have to react.

Steering and suspension Like most of your car’s components, the parts that make up your steering and suspension system are prone to wear and tear damage and may lead to dangerous situations. For example, if your tie rod ends fail you will lose all steering control of your vehicle and risk veering sharply on the road, and if

your ball joints fail your suspension can collapse, also causing to lose all steering control. When navigating city streets or busy highways, a loss of steering control can be catastrophic, so be sure to have your steering and suspension system inspected regularly and replace any worn parts.

Tires Your tires are your car’s point of contact with the road and play a crucial role in your car’s safety.

Underinflated tires can cause your tires to overheat and blow out, while overinflated tires reduce your contact with the road and wear more quickly.

Uneven tread wear and bald spots also cause problems because they reduce your control on the road, increase your stopping distance, and increase your risk of hydroplaning or skidding. Finally, relying on

all-season tires in the winter can increase your risk of a collision by reducing your grip on the road in temperatures below 7 degrees Celsius. Check your tire pressure and tread wear regularly, have them rotated as per the manufacturer’s recommendations, and use appropriate tires for the season to maintain maximum control.

Though vehicle safety technology is ever-improving, your car is not immune to wear and tear. Be sure to have your vehicle inspected regularly and to budget for unexpected repairs to avoid dangerous collisions. Spending a few bucks is certainly worth the peace of mind that your car will respond to your driving.

Canadian Driving = Severe Driving As you flip through your vehicle’s owner manual, you’re likely to notice that it has two different service interval schedules – one for “normal” driving and one for “severe” driving.” If you’re like most Canadians, you probably think that you drive under normal conditions, but like most Canadians, you’d be wrong.

The complex issue of farm ownership

The Saskatchewan government has been consulting with farmers and other Saskatchewan landowners on the issue of farm ownership, to see what Saskatchewan residents think about who should be allowed to own land in the province and how much land they should be allowed to buy.

Up until 1974, anybody in Saskatchewan could own however much land they wanted. Between 1974 and 2002, different amendments were made to the Saskatchewan Farm Ownership Act and Saskatchewan Farm Security Act on this issue. Now, there are three rules for farm ownership in the province: -Non-Canadians and non-100-per-cent Canadian owned entities can own no more than 10 acres of farmland in Saskatchewan.

-The Saskatchewan Farm Land Security Board can grant exemptions.

-Pension plans and investment trusts cannot own farmland in Saskatchewan.

According to the Saskatchewan Farm Security Act, pension plans and investment trusts do not count as Canadian-owned entities and thus cannot own more

than 10 acres. One exception is the Canada Pension Plan, which owns 115,000 acres of Saskatchewan farmland, because the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board is considered a Canadian-owned entity according to the Act. With more interest in Saskatchewan farmland, the provincial government is taking steps to see whether the definition of a Canadian-owned entity is accurate.

There are two main questions in play: should foreign investors be allowed to purchase farmland, and should institutional investors like pension funds be allowed to own farmland?

The non-Canadians wanting to buy land do so for varied reasons. Stewart said sometimes there will be a foreign person who wants to buy farmland and get Canadian citizenship. More controversially, a person or business may want the land to make a profit and maybe drive up the price of farmland.

“The concerns (from residents) are all over the map,” said Saskatchewan agriculture minister Lyle Stewart. “It’s a wide range of issues around this that people are concerned about.”

Some of these issues include making land a traded

commodity that drives the price beyond what farmers can pay and foreign control of one of the province’s most valuable strategic resources.

“We want to know what people think,” Stewart said – in particular, agricultural stakeholders. “This affects them more than it affects anybody … this will guide us in deciding what farmland ownership policy should be in the province.”

Farm ownership rules among the provinces vary widely. In Ontario, there are no restrictions on foreign ownership. In Manitoba, non-Canadians and non-Canadian owned entities cannot own more than 40 acres of land. In Alberta, non-Canadians and foreign-controlled-entities can only own up to 20 acres of farmland and an entity needs to be majority-owned to be considered Canadian. In addition, Canadian pension plans have purchased farmland in Alberta.

The government had a survey available for residents to put in their two cents, but the deadline has since passed. Now, the information has to be analyzed, which will take awhile due to the complexity and number of answers. Stewart estimates that the analysis will be done by early fall.

The federal government has an ongoing Nutrition Facts Education Campaign (NFEC) to better inform Canadians about their food.

“The Nutrition Facts Education Campaign’s: Focus on the Facts is a multipart initiative to increase Canadians’ awareness, use and un-

derstanding of the serving size and percent daily value (% DV) on the Nutrition Facts table (NFt) to help them make informed food choices for themselves and their families,” said Andre Gagnon, media relations officer with Health Canada.

The serving size on a food item means that the information found in the Nft is based on this amount of food. The % DV is used to see how much nutrient the food has. According to Gagnon, 5 per cent DV is considered a little while 15 per cent or more is considered a lot.

The second phase of the campaign, which focuses on the serving size and using the 5 DV, was rolled out at the end of May. The first phase began in fall of 2010 and was intended to introduce and raise awareness of the Nft. “The NFEC supports Canadians to understand that serving size is not necessarily the suggested quantity of food they should eat. The serving size is the quantity of food used to calculate the numbers in the nutrition facts table,” Gagnon said. “It also supports Canadians to understand that % DV is not meant to track a person’s nutri-

ent intake for the day. % DV can be used to determine whether there is a little or a lot of a nutrient in a serving size, and to compare foods.”

Online resources used in conjunction with the campaign have information on the food guide, healthy eating, different nutrients, and food safety.

GERMAIN: Eleanor Rita Oct. 29, 1923 - Aug. 14, 2015 Mrs. Eleanor Rita (nee Schimnosky) Germain of Humboldt, SK, passed away very peacefully on Fr iday, August 14, 2015, at Humboldt District Hospital, Humboldt, with her loving family by her side. She was 91 years of age. Eleanor was born on October 29, 1923, to John and Melvina (nee Schwedelsky) Schimnosky in Leipzig, SK. She attended grade school and high school in Leipzig, and went on to Normal School in Saskatoon to become a teacher. It was during that time she suffered the devastating loss of her mother.

Eleanorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s teaching career led her to the Carmel area, where she met Leo Germain. They were married at Immaculate Conception Church on July 25, 1945. Eleanor and Leo started their family the following year, and she quickly made the decision her children were more important than teaching. In the mid 1950â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, they moved into Humboldt and, by 1962, had seven children. In her determination to create a happy home, Eleanor taught herself sewing, budgeting on a string, gardening, cooking, baking, and was infamous for her homemade bread and â&#x20AC;&#x153;Mrs. â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Mainâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bunsâ&#x20AC;?.

Having that many children in such a small home meant order and discipline, and â&#x20AC;&#x153;Da Mammaâ&#x20AC;? was often teased later on that all she had to do was rattle the drawer with the wooden spoon in it, and the house was cleared of kids. The family moved to her current home in 1968, and the house was always filled with kids and friends, many of whom she became known to as mom or gramma. She remained living there until her death. Eleanor had incredible strength and faith, and that was never more evident than how she carried her family through the loss of her husband, her two sons, and inevitably, her own passing. The last two weeks of her life were spent with her family by her side, showing them the true meaning of that incredible strength and faith. Eleanor will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by five children: Lorna Germain (George), Marianne (Dean) Thistle, Gerard (Charlene) Germain, Marvin (Barbara) Germain, and Denise Germain; daughters-in-law: Daphane Germain, and Val (Brad) Wudrich; eight grandchildren: Patrick Fehr, Sandra (Bill) Fehr, Carlea (Kevin) Taylor, Carl Germain, Chantelle (Dan) Sharpe, Devon Heppner, Nathan Heppner, and Rachel Germain; two great-grandchildren: Elijah Taylor, and Gavin Taylor; one sister, Bernadette MacLeod; three sisters-in-law: Emma Schidlowsky, Loretta Greer, and Genevieve Doetzel; and by numerous nieces, nephews, and their families. She was predeceased by her husband, Leo Germain; two sons: Barry Germain and Mark Germain; parents, John and Melvina (nee Schwedelsky) Schimnosky; four brothers: Leo Schimnosky, Leopold Tunney, Raymond Schimnosky, and Alois Schimnosky; six sisters: Mary Huber, Theresa MacMillan, Rose Stevens, Elizabeth Cripps, Florentine Vetter, Frances Schimnosky; parents-in-law, Lawrence and Malvina (nee Kosokowsky) Germain; and by in-laws: Fred Germain, Rudy Germain, Agnes Witt, Anne Stumborg, Madeline Germain, Theresa Kloschinsky, and Mary Freistadt. The Prayer Service for Eleanor was held at St. Augustine R.C. Church, Humboldt, on Tuesday, August 18, 2015, at 8:00 p.m., led by Nestor Trach and organist Denise Germain. Scripture readers were Marianne Thistle and Carlea Taylor. The Funeral Mass was offered at St. Augustine R.C. Church on Wednesday, August 19, 2015, at 10:30 a.m., celebrated by Fr. Cosmas Epifano, OSB. Others taking part were: Sandra Fehr, crossbearer; Gerard Germain and Denise Germain, scripture readers; Chantelle Sharpe, Devon Heppner, Carlea Taylor and Rachel Germain, intentions; Chantelle Sharpe, Devon Heppner and Nathan Heppner, giftbearers; Gen Doetzel and Heather Novecosky, communion ministers; Jackie Oswald, memorial table attendant. Velma was born on July 20, 1929, to William and Ida (nee Pulvermacher) Renneberg near Leofeld, SK and grew up on her parentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; farm. When she married Ed Brockman on June 14, 1949, she moved to the farm eight miles west of Middle Lake. Together they farmed and raised their eleven children. They moved into Middle Lake in 1999. Velma was actively involved in the lives of everyone around her from cheering in the stands, to life and spiritual advisor. Velma is survived by her husband of 66 years, Edward Brockman; children, Ray, Gerry(Anne-Marie), Joan, Gene(Ann), Hank(Karen), Terri(Garth) Broadhead, Ted(Lois), Tony(Miyu), Pat(Estrella), Ed(Mary Ellen) and Tim(Melanie); 34 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marion Kirzinger and Mildred Flick; three sisters-in-law, Margaret Penner, Helen(Jack) Reynolds and Jan(Chris) Duncan. She was predeceased by her son Daniel(1953 infancy), father, William(1955), mother, Ida(1985), sister, Laura(John) Diederich; brothers, Norber t(Elizabeth), Alfred(Catherine), Joe(Velma and Lorna), Fr. Obituaries LAMPING: Mary Marlene Feb. 5, 1948 - Aug. 12, 2015 The passing of Mary Lamping (nee Stroeder) of Lake Lenore, SK, occurred at Humboldt District Hospital, Humboldt, SK, on Wednesday, August 12, 2015, at the age of 67 years. Mary was born February 5, 1948 to Anthony and Mary (nee Albers) Stroeder and was the tenth of 18 children. She was raised on the family farm north of Marysburg and attended school in Marysburg and Muenster. Her parents taught her the meaning of family, hard work, and responsibility. After her schooling, she had numerous jobs working at OK Economy, the dentist office, and Red & White. In 1970, she married Art Lamping and they were married for 45 years.

They settled on the Lamping family farm near Lake Lenore. In 1974, they were blessed with their first daughter Tina and in 1975, their second daughter Jodie. After a few years enjoying being a mom, she returned to the work force and worked at Central Meats, the Co-op and finally Bethany Pioneer Village until her retirement in 2010. Mary had many loves but the greatest was her flowers and birds. She spent hours enjoying them on her deck. She also loved telling stories and spending time with her grandchildren. Mary was a very talented baker and was known for her cream puffs, scuffles, and chocolate zucchini cake. Her hobbies were playing cards, baking, quilting and sewing. Mary will be deeply missed by her loving husband of 45 years, Art Lamping; two daughters, Tina (Brad) Bogucky and their children Thomas and Julia; Jodie (Roland) Hoeflicher and their children Reid, Joelle and Josie; siblings: Randy (Janet) Stroeder, Melvin (Josephine) Stroeder, Grace Bautz, Millie (Ray) Hoffman, Bob Stroeder, Nettie Stroeder, Tony (Sandy) Stroeder, Ann Zelle, Ken Stroeder, Ruth (Beno) Barlage, Karen Ferguson, Kevin (Allyson) Stroeder, and Judy (Paul) Ulrich; 38 nieces and nephews; two sisters-in-law, Joan (Pete) Matvichuk and MaryLou (Elmer) Wosminity; one brother-in-law, Hugo Lamping; and other relatives and friends. Aug. 27, 1942 - Aug. 10, 2015 Stanley George Langkammer of Humboldt, SK, passed away on August 10, 2015, at Humboldt.

He was 72 years of age. Stan, the oldest of three children, was born on August 27, 1942, to Paul and Clara (nee Schreiner) Langkammer. He grew up on the farm nor th of Humboldt.

Stan took his first two years of school at Burton Lake School.

The family moved to Humboldt in 1950 where he took the rest of his schooling through grade 12. As a youngster, he pedalled around town delivering the Star Phoenix and also picked up odd jobs cleaning up at construction sites. Stan was also an altar boy at the time that Fr. Al was the priest and enjoyed their yearly party out at St. Peterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s from the money they collected at weddings from the groom. After his schooling, he got a job working in Humboldt for Canada Post as a clerk. He worked there for 34 years until his retirement in 1997. On the side, after hours from work, Stan helped his brother Arnold drill water wells in various areas of Saskatchewan. Stan served as secretary of the Stoney Lake Association for a few years. He also became active in the Humboldt Gun Club, helping with construction of the club house, shooting trap, and went into competing with big bore hand guns in Saskatchewan and Alberta. He enjoyed hunting with rifle, shotgun black powder and bow hunting for all species of big game and water fowl. The highlight was a fly-in camp at True North Safaris, Mackay Lake, NWT, where he shot caribou and caught lake trout. Over the years, Stan also helped his uncle and cousin on the farm, especially at harvest time, lending a hand where ever needed. In retirement, Stan pursued his interest in gardening and plants. He and his sister, Dianne frequented greenhouses each spring in search of the best plants. In 2013, an old injury came back to haunt him. As a teenager, a hit and run driver hit him while out walking with a group of young people. He went through several surgeries as well as daily repacking of the old injury. Fortunately Stan was an avid reader, so it helped to fill the time. Through this time, Stan never failed to show his appreciation for the care he was given. Stanley will be missed by his sister Dianne, and numerous friends and relatives. He was predeceased by his father, Paul Langkammer; mother, Clara (Langkammer) Eastman; two brothers: Arnold Langkammer (December 8, 2009), and a brother in infancy; and by step-father, Earl Eastman and his family. TALBOT: Shirley Sept. 9, 1936 - Aug. 9, 2015 Shirley Marlene Talbot, 78, of Ogema, SK departed this life unexpectedly on 9 Aug 2015 at Regina General Hospital. Born in Bengough to Cecil and Jean Stewar t on 9 Sept 1936, the eldest of two daughters. Shirley graduated high school in Ogema then entered the Canadian Air Force and was overseas for a number of years as a flight controller. She was stationed in England, Holland, France, and Italy to name a few. She returned to Canada and was married to Larry Talbot in 1964. From that marriage the lights of her life came about. Kit was her only natural born son and Donnie was her son by choice. Shirley lived in numerous areas throughout her life but the majority had been in the Watson and Ogema areas. In Watson she was the hotel and bar manager for a number of years and made a lasting friendship with Delores Stushnoff and John Yuzik. Shirley loved to hear all of the adventures of her children, grandchildren, family and friends; she was often found â&#x20AC;&#x153;creepingâ&#x20AC;? on Facebook. She was particularly adept at spinning the tales of the misadventures of her grandsons. She had the best sense of humor and always made you laugh until you cried. She loved her cat George and had many tales and adventures with â&#x20AC;&#x153;that damn catâ&#x20AC;?. She was an avid collector of recipes and from that we have all benefited; her buns and appetizers were a favorite. Shirley was the person we all confided in as she was nonjudgmental and very compassionate. She was very giving of her time, advice and love; she expected nothing in return. Shirley is survived by her sons; Kit (Roxanne) and Donnie (Annette), her grandchildren: Gregory (Amanda), Steven, Anthony (Desire), Kittrina (Brad), Kealey, Chelsea, and Donald Jr., her great grandchildren: Callie, Zoe and Trevyn, her sister Myrna (Earl) Martindale Owen, and numerous nieces and nephews. A tough week for Tory re-election hopes

By Deveryn Ross contributor Sometime after October 19, when we look back at the federal election campaign, will we say that last week was the tipping point in the campaign, or will we regard it as a tempest in a teapot that occurred before the real campaign even began?

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a question that is obviously impossible answer just three weeks into an 11-week campaign, but it is easy to get the sense that a number of important things happened last week, and none of them were good for the Conservativesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; re-election hopes. At the top of the list is the testimony of Nigel Wright and Benjamin Perrin during the criminal trial of Tory Senator Mike Duffy. Both Wright and Perrin are former staffers in the Prime Ministerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Office.

For several days, Wright provided a portrait of a PMO that placed higher priority on protecting Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Conservative Party from embarrassment than on being honest with the Canadian public. One of the most memorable aspects of his testimony was his assertion that having Duffy claim he reimbursed taxpayers for questionable expense claims made by him, when he (Wright) had actually funded the reimbursement, did not amount to a â&#x20AC;&#x153;bad misrepresentation.â&#x20AC;?

Was Wright saying that lying to the public is permissible when it serves the interests of the PM and his party? Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s certainly the way it has been interpreted in the media.

Perrinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s evidence established that numerous senior PMO staff were aware that it was Wright, not Duffy, who was funding the reimbursement.

Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a problem for Harper, who has consistently insisted, including in response to questions in

the House of Commons, that he was never told it was Wright who had paid the money.

In other words, the most hands-on Prime Minister in Canadian history expects Canadians to believe his most-trusted advisors deliberately kept him in the dark for more than two years, allowing him to give answers they knew were untrue.

Harper has to take that position because the alternative would be admitting that he knew all along that Wright had bankrolled the reimbursement, and that he has lied about it for more than two years. The PM will never make that admission -- it would destroy his hopes of re-election -- but it is a conclusion that an increasing number of Canadians are already making.

Many Conservative supporters argue that the Duffy trial and the $90,000 payment are a distraction from what the decisive issue should be in this campaign but they are ignoring (and asking voters to ignore) the more troubling questions that logically flow from Wrightâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and Perrinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s testimony.

For example, if the Prime Ministerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s senior staff is so willing to lie to Canadians about picayune issues like the repayment of Duffyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s expense claims, what about big issues? What else have they lied to us about? Were the lies about Duffy the actions of rogue staffers, or did they reflect a PMO value system created, managed and enforced by the Prime Minister himself?

The Conservatives want voters to cast their ballots based upon who they trust most to lead the country through economic and national security challenges, but the campaign may be evolving into one in which the ballot box question simply asks Canadians which leader and party they trust most. If that happens, the Tories could be

in trouble.

Indeed, an Abacus Research poll released last week revealed that Harperâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s negative ratings have risen by 12 per cent since last December, while positive ratings for both NDP leader Thomas Mulcair and Liberal leader Justin Trudeau have increased sharply.

The poll also found that both Mulcair and Trudeau â&#x20AC;&#x153;score more positively than Mr. Harper on 8 of the 12 dimensions: Principled, ethical, honest, accountable, good ideas, good heart, understands people like you, interesting. . . Mr. Harperâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s best scores are for being smart, tough, and ready to be PM. His scores are much lower for being honest, accountable, and understanding people like you.â&#x20AC;?

When Stephen Harper launched the campaign, it appeared to be his to lose. Just three weeks later, there is a growing sense that he is doing just that.

Plunkett News Well, harvest is already on some farms and a busy spell will be for awhile. Hope the weather man can keep the rain away for a while.

Several folks enjoyed the Plunkett BBQ on Aug 18 at the community centre.

Folks who follow up watching the stars were also watching the meteor which was crossing over the moon last week.

The Brethdur United Church held Flower Sunday on Aug 16. Following the church service, family members were at Marvin Cemetary and laid flowers on the graves.

Gary and Linda Whitehead were away camping at Cypress HIlls for a while with some family members.

A Birthday Party dinner was held at the home of Dennis and Leona Credgeur’s on Aug 16 for Leona’s mother, Mrs. Laura Rewert of Hanley. Leona’s sister Colleen and her family of Hanley and Saskatoon were down to attend it and so was Ken and I and Ervin Credgeur of Viscount.

Get well greetings go out to anyone ill and in hospital. We wish them a speedy recovery.

Recently visiting Louise Hale was Beverly Grisdale Gamble and her husband, Emile, of Saskatoon and they also visited Ken at the farm.

Crop Report for the Period August 11 to 17, 2015 Producers have nine per cent of the 2015 crop combined and 10 per cent swathed or ready to straightcut, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture’s Weekly Crop Report. The five-year average at this time of the year is two per cent combined and five per cent swathed or ready to straight-cut.

Sixty-three per cent of fall rye, 59 per cent of winter wheat, 40 per cent of field peas, 34 per cent of lentils and 14 per cent of chickpeas are now in the bin. Three per cent of canola and four per cent of mustard are now in the bin, with 14 per cent of canola and 21 per cent of mustard swathed or ready to straight-cut.

Warm and relatively dry conditions have helped crops develop quickly in many areas.

Rainfall this past week ranged from trace amounts to nearly three inches in some areas.

Provincially, topsoil moisture conditions on cropland are rated as seven per cent surplus, 75 per cent adequate, 16 per cent short and two per cent very short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as three per cent surplus, 64 per cent adequate, 28 per cent short and five per cent very short.

The Ministry of Agriculture has a Forage, Feed and Custom Service listing for producers to advertise and source feed products. It is available at www. agriculture.gov.sk.ca/FeedForageListing.

Some crop damage was caused by localized hail, wind and insects such as aphids, grasshoppers and diamondback moths.

Farmers are busy with harvest operations and hauling bales.
