Evacuees flee home in La Ronge and seek refuge in Humboldt Despite the fires raging on for more than a few weeks now, many people in the province still don’t know the hardships faced by those evacuated. Families such as the Santanas who are staying in the Humboldt campground have been forced to leave everything behind, unsure whether or not there will even be a home or a community to come back to. “It was really frantic because I knew we would have to leave (our home) at some point, so we were trying to pack the camper here and there with stuff, but … we had company come up in between that time, so we took stuff out of the camper,” said Tessa Santana. “I didn’t even have time to retrieve it because we were trying to get the dogs out from under the deck and they wouldn’t come and you’re crying because you have to leave everything behind.” Santana and her husband, Leonardo, evacuated to Humboldt in their fifth wheel on July 4 with their two daughters, 10-year-old Sierra and 13-year-old Savannah from La Ronge. Santana’s cousin lives in town and she/he invited them to come here instead of going to one of the centres in Saskatoon or Prince Albert. Her parents and Santana’s 26-year-old daughter recently joined the family. Since they’ve come, Santana said the support from the community has been absolutely amazing. Donations such as clothing and food items have been pouring in, so they don’t have to stress about providing for their kids. Since they’re unable to work and have no money coming in, that’s one fewer thing to worry about. Now all they have on their minds is the condition of their house and their animals. “Considering the situation you’re in, you make the best of it and we are in an awesome place to make the best of it because everyone here is amazing,” she said. “You tell them your situation and everyone is just like, ‘Oh my God’ and right away you just get this warm felt welcome and it’s just good. I mean, it’s not a vacation because it’s stressful and you’re constantly worrying about what’s going on at home, but you make the best of it.” Santana and her husband had actually been staying in their house for four weeks after the town of La Ronge was beginning to get evacuated. They live seven ki-

lometres north of the town and have two dogs, chickens, rabbits (that just had babies), and miniature donkeys. They were making p re p a r a t i o n s to keep the house as safe as possible by installing sprinklers around it, which the firefighters came and helped them with. “ We s a i d , ‘Can you take the kids out of there?’ So that photo by Melanie Jacob was all fine; they got the kids From left to right: Savannah Santana, Tessa Santana, Leonardo Santana, and Sierra out and took Santana. them to our eldest daughter. We knew if we left they wouldn’t let us back in,” said glance at where the fire was because you could hear Santana. “Me and Len stayed there and helped the the fire roaring in the bush … it was almost like water firefighters. I made meals for them while they were bombers fighting it, but there were no water bombers. trying to cut down willow trees. Willow trees don’t It was actually the fire. It creates its own wind and if burn, so they made big towers and hooked up the there’s a breeze up above, that breeze comes in and just circulates and you can hear this roaring, which means sprinklers to the highest point of the tower.” Everyday was filled with insecurity for them. San- the fire is very close.” It was shortly thereafter that the fire chief himself tana said they would go out daily to specific points on their property to see if there was any fire, because came and told Santana and her husband that they had that would mean they had to leave immediately. They to leave immediately. Apparently, the fire had swept monitored the winds and the wind direction until the behind them, taken out their neighbours’ house, and day the police came and told them they had to leave. was creeping up on them from the rear. After all their “They were constantly trying to put out the fire, but weeks of preparations, Santana and her husband still they couldn’t and kept getting bigger until it merged weren’t ready to leave behind everything they loved. Since she had been using the food supplies that were with another big fire, so it was so big at that point that they just couldn’t put it out,” she said. “So (the fire- originally in the camper, they had no time to pack it all fighters) had hooked up all the water pumps and then back in. They had to open the corrals so the donkeys left me and my husband. We were going to go take a could escape if they needed to and the chicken coops so they wouldn’t be trapped in there. They had to leave their dogs behind because they couldn’t get the panicked canines out from under the porch. The only things she managed to take with them was the family photo albums and important documents.

Evacuees flee home in La Ronge and seek refuge in Humboldt Cont’d from previous page “It was hectic and as you were leaving you’re going, ‘There’s my whole life.’ We kind of knew we would have to leave at some point, but until that time comes, you’re never really ready,â€? she said. “I had packed some crates that I had pictures in and that’s pretty much all I got ‌ everything else is just valuables, it’s stuff that can be replaced. I collect a lot of antiques. I have antique cameras from all over the world. I have antique photographs. It was all left behind. (But) we have each other and that’s the main thing.â€? Fortunately, the SPCA came in and was able to rescue all but the dogs and place them at a nearby acreage that was willing to take the animals for the time being. The dogs were still too scared to come out from under the porch, so the firefighters have been leaving food for them instead. One would think that was the end of their troubles, but it wasn’t. Once they finally left their house and headed to their eldest daughter’s house in town, they discovered that the whole town was being evacuated and that they’d have to move again. It was then that they took their two daughters and headed for Humboldt. Her eldest daughter went to one of the evacuation centres in Saskatoon first before joining them. “My daughter was in Saskatoon and she said they

How will I get to my appointment in Saskatoon?

didn’t get (the same level of) help and support that she’s even been getting since she got here, said Santana. “Even though you have the stress of (being evacuated), all the amazing people of Humboldt have been kind to us. It’s been a lot easier. Between all that, Santana said she and her husband now have to worry about the future. They heard the sprinklers they set up have so far saved their house, but it will be pointless if the community burns. They’ll need to find new jobs and probably a new community to live in. “That’s the thing, you just don’t know. At what point do you say we’re running out of money, do we go get an apartment? Go find work? she said. “Me and my husband will go for a bike ride at night and that’s where we can do our most thinking and talking, that’s when we have our space together. This is a nice community so we might just have to stay here, but that’s still up in the air. I would hope at some point we will get some kind of direction as to what we need to do. Update: As of July 20, La Ronge has been declared safe for residents to return.

Harsher penalties for wildlife offences come into effect By Robin tarnowetzki Journal staff writer People in Saskatchewan who are going out to hunt should be aware of some updates to the Wildlife Amendment Act, which came into effect on July 1. The provincial government conducted a survey of hunters and anglers in 2012 to see what could be improved in the province around hunting and angling. “One of the key messages we heard back at that time was that we needed to do more to protect our wildlife resources, said Chuck Lees, provincial wildlife manager. To that end, most of the changes have to do with harsher penalties for those who violate hunting rules and regulations. The following are new rules laid out in the Act: - The most serious conservation offences will have an automatic two-year suspension - Anyone convicted on three separate occasions for wildlife offences will receive a lifetime ban - Anyone with outstanding wildlife-related fines will not be able to get a license until their fines are paid - Anyone banned from hunting in other places will not be able to get a licence in Saskatchewan - Wildlife officers have up to three years to investigate violations and lay charges. “We see these changes as sending a strong

message to those that might abuse them, Lees said. He added that one of the biggest deterrents to hunters is prohibiting them from hunting, which is why many of the punishments have to do with a ban from wildlife-related activities, though he acknowledges that most hunters follow regulations in order to preserve the resource. The main purpose of the change in the Act is conservation, but it also helps to keep hunters safe. The survey came as a result of the provincial Red Tape Reduction Initiative. Eventually, 3,622 responses were received and analyzed. “It was quite a big undertaking, Lees said. It’s important in a big hunting province like Saskatchewan. S Unlike other jurisdicANSWER tions, Saskatchewan’s E FROM TH number of hunters has been increasing PUZZLES by about one half of IN LAST one per cent annually. “We are kind of WEEKS bucking the trend, EAST he said. CENTRAL This year with the big game hunting apTRADER plication, Lees said, “We broke all the re-

cords again in terms of numbers. Lees attributes this partially to an increased population. Another reason is just the amount of animals here to hunt. For example, he said that right now the province has good migratory bird populations, which brings in people from other provinces. And of course, with more people hunting, it’s important to remember safety. The biggest things to remember are to follow proper hunting dress codes to make sure other hunters see you, and practice proper gun handling techniques. For more information, hunting guides and supplements are posted on the Ministry of Environment website at www.environment.gov.sk.ca.

Your next meal could be right in your backyard

Calvin Daniels When you live on the Canadian Prairies you tend to have a rather narrow view of what agriculture means here. Alberta is thought of as the land of ranches and cattle. Saskatchewan still holds onto the idea of being the bread basket of the world because of wheat. And so on it has gone through the years. Granted, there have been some notable changes - canola blooming in fields across the entire Prairies being the prime example, but still the general view we have of what farmers here can and do produce is

hardly as diverse as the reality of things. Obviously farmers here can grow far more than wheat, canola and cattle, but the problem is getting consumers here to make the extra effort to find what is available locally. Certainly, there is growing interest in eating food produced closer to the kitchen table. “The 100-Mile Diet: A Year of Local Eating (or Plenty: One Man, One Woman, and a Raucous Year of Eating Locally) is a non-fiction book written by Canadian writers Alisa Smith and J.B. MacKinnon. In the book, the authors recount their experiences, including motivations and challenges, on restricting their diet, for one year, to include only foods grown within 100 miles of their residence. Beginning in March 2005, with little preparation, the urban couple began only purchasing foods with ingredients they knew were all from within 100 miles. Finding little in grocery stores, they relied on farmers’ markets and visits

to local farms,” detailed Wikipedia. The idea of the so-called 100-mile diet has caught on with some, primarily as a way to better ensure knowledge of what they are eating. Building a relationship with market gardeners, u-pick fruit farms, and area livestock producers certainly enhances a better understanding of the food we eat. To help identify what is actually available in Saskatchewan at least, Farm & Food Care Saskatchewan held a celebration of Saskatchewan-grown food at Taste of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon on July 14-19. “In conjunction with this event, Farm & Food Care Saskatchewan has launched #loveSASKfood to encourage foodies to show their appreciation for home-grown food by tweeting or posting pictures to Instagram,” detailed a release on the event. A new website, loveSASKfood.org has also been created as a resource for consumers. On the site, you will find delicious

recipes, profiles and videos of real Saskatchewan farmers, as well as information on upcoming food-related events. “We’re proud of the quality food that we produce in Saskatchewan,” stated Adele Buettner, CEO of Farm & Food Care Saskatchewan in the release. “From beef to chicken, eggs, pork, milk, wheat, canola, pulses, barley, flax and much, much more, Saskatchewan farmers are diligent in their efforts to produce the best possible foods for consumers to eat. What farmers grow in Saskatchewan is exported all over the world. loveSASKfood is our way of inviting consumers to engage in conversations about food and farming in Saskatchewan - and celebrate the incredible array of food produced right here at home.” It is an intriguing experience when you take some time to search out what is available in the province and across the Prairies. There are small enterprises creating fantastic smoked meats, others creating jams,

jellies, syrups and even wines from Prairie-produced fruits, gourmet mustards, and flavoured teas to mention only some. There is little doubt we could all add far more locally-produced food to our weekly food fare, and if demand was there farmers would diversify quickly to meet evolving demands. The issue is consumers and farmers making the connections. Consumers have become increasingly tied to big grocery stores that often do not deal with local producers because they cannot ensure the dayto-day supply big groceries require. That means consumers wanting local food have to look outside the big box store more. Farmers need to find ways to increase their profile too social media and local advertising of course being important. The bottom line is that Prairie farmers could produce more for our tables if we made eating locally produced food a priority as consumers. It would be a win/win for both.

Most wildfire evacuees able to return By Robin tarnowetzki Journal staff writer

Slowly but surely, firefighters from both inside and outside the province are beating back the wildfires that have consumed hundreds of thousands of hectares in the north. The best piece of news this week is that most people are being returned to their homes, save for two communities: Hall Lake and Clam Crossing. All evacuation orders have been lifted for the La Ronge area and people are in the process of settling back into their homes. Support is in place to allow them to return seamlessly. For La Loche and Turner Lake, medical support is being organized to allow the return of health priority evacuees, which King said on Monday would mostly happen on Tuesday. Though people can return, firefighters are still trying to contain the fires and keep them from encroaching on communities again. King said that coordination between agencies and ministries, as well as leadership in the different communities, has been excellent. “It’s been a complex and occasionally trying but overall successful operation so far,” said Colin King, deputy commissioner for emergency management and fire safety. Karri Kempf, manager of information and emergency services with the province, said that there are almost 3,000 people still receiving emergency support, though that may not necessarily reflect the total number of evacuees since some are staying with friends and family. “I fully expect that we will be down to a few dozen

by Wednesday morning,” Kempf said. Right now there is no known cost for the emergency assistance, but work on determining a number will start once everybody is home. “Right now, we’re really focused on the people in front of us and providing those direct services,” Kempf said. The rain and cooler weather helped a bit with fighting the fires, but this coming week’s temperatures are set to climb. “That will generate increased fire activity … we’re prepared for that and understand that all the work we’ve done over the last number of days will support us and we can maintain our boundaries on some of these fires,” said Steve Roberts, executive director, wildfire management. There are about 800 personnel left on the ground after the 200 military members went home on Tuesday. “We wanted to thank them for their service,” Rob-

erts said. “They’ve been a great help, working with us on these fires.” Roberts added that many of the soldiers were excited for the chance to help out fellow Canadians. This week, there will be 60 firefighters added to crews already there. This is because of the expected flare-ups due to the heat and possible lightning. “Considering the number of direct fire threats, the number of community losses has been very, very low,” Roberts said. However, he added that while the firefighters have been doing a good job, they take losses personally, so their feelings are “mixed.” Ninety-nine structures have burned, but there are no specific numbers as to how many were permanent residences. As for whether fires of this magnitude will be a worry next year, Roberts said fire seasons aren’t cyclical so it’s hard to tell right now. There are 98 fires in the province. There have been 646 to date, compared to 235 last year.

Hockey Hall of Fame leaves memorable mark on Humboldt history By Melanie Jacob Journal Editor The Elgar Petersen Arena was a fitting place to hold the much-anticipated Saskatchewan Hockey Hall of Fame ceremony on Friday evening. It was a glittering event that saw more than 700 people attend, including the likes of Wendall Clark, Dave “Tigerâ€? Williams, and even Elgar Petersen himself. “Having Elgar here is really special ‌ you just have to read the story,â€? said Humboldt Mayor Malcolm Eaton. “He’s been such a big part of this community and particularly the hockey world, but also other sports, so it’s really great to see him honoured tonight and I think the whole community will appreciate that when they read about it and when they hear about it. For all the folks that are here tonight that are part of it, I think the community is really going to appreciate the way the Hockey Hall of Fame is honouring Elgar’s story.â€? More than just Petersen, the inductees were swarmed with people wanting to chat, take pictures and get autographs. Clark and Williams were especially swamped and neither were able to move more than a few steps without getting stopped by someone. “It’s always special and you’re always honoured (to be recognized by people) because when us guys go into play, you’re representing the areas you’re from,â€? said Clark. “You try to remember everybody; half the time you don’t remember all the names, but you do remember faces because you’re getting to meet a lot of people. BASSET: Brian “Cookie In loving memory of Brian who passed away July 21, 2007.

SPERLING: In loving memory of our Father & Husband, Sheldon who passed away July 26, 2013.

To hear your voice and see you smile To sit with you and talk awhile To be together in the same old way Would be our greatest wish today. So please God take a message To our precious one above Tell him how much we miss him And give him our love.

The moment you left me, My heart was split in two; One side was filled with memories; The other side died with you. I often lay awake at night When the world is fast asleep; And take a walk down memory lane With tears upon my cheek. Remembering you easy, I do it every day; But missing you is a heartache That never goes away. I hold you tightly within my heart And there you will remain; You see life has gone on without you, But will never be the same.

Always remembered & loved by Mom, Ken, Marylea & family

SHERVEN: William Gerald Sept. 14, 1932 - May 23, 2015 It is with profound sadness that I come to you with the news of Bill Sher ven’s passing. Bill passed quietly in St. Mar y’s V i l l a i n t h e e a r ly h o u rs o f Saturday, May 23, 2015. Uncle Bill was bor n in Naicam, Saskatchewan on September 14, 1932 to Er ic and Islay Sherven. He was the fifth of six children, composed of three boys and three girls. They lived i n L a c Ve r t a n d h a d m a ny adventures at Silver Beach, a resort his parents founded and operated. We heard many stories of the family band and Grandma’s beautiful voice. He told us how they would cross the lake on logs, and how Maxine would chase everyone with snakes. When Uncle Bill was about 16 year old, the family moved to LeRoy, where Grandpa Sherven built the theater. Uncle Bill operated the projectors for many years. He also managed the Credit Union in LeRoy for a number of years. He took two years off from the Credit Union to work on the boats for NTCL in the NWT. He then returned to Saskatchewan and continued in the Credit Union system in Kuroki for quite a few years. I know all of the nieces and nephews have many stories to tell about visiting Uncle Bill in Kuroki every summer. After he left Kuroki he went to Dorintosh to manage the Credit Union there for a short time until he retired to Tobin Lake, where he had a little cabin. After being in Tobin for about five years he moved to Nipawin. When his health started failing, he moved back to LeRoy to be closer to Maxine, and moved into the LeRose Lodge, where he stayed for about a year. His health continued to decline to the point where he was admitted to the St. Joseph’s Wing at St. Mary’s Villa, and was there for little more than a year before his passing. Uncle Bill was never married. His adventurous spirit and unpredictability would never allow him to be caught in convention. He is survived by his sister Maxine (Norman) Gierl, and a multitude of nieces and nephews who loved him very much. Uncle Bill may not have had a conventional family, but he had a knack of being everyone’s adopted uncle. Thus, there are many families out there who lost their uncle and friend. We will all miss his sense of humour, and his infectious spirit that made him the life of the party. He was predeceased by his parents Eric and Islay Sherven, brothers Dr. Garfield Sher ven, James Sher ven, and sisters Donelda McNaulty and Lorriane Rodgers. Together Again

BUNZ: Edmond Michael Nov. 1, 1928 - June 29, 2015 Mr. Edmond Michael Bunz of St. Mary’s Villa, Humboldt, SK, passed away at Humboldt District Hospital on Monday, June 29, 2015. He was 86 years of age. Edmond, one of eight children, was born on November 1, 1928, to Adam and Bertha (nee Jung) Bunz at home on their far m 14 miles southeast of Humboldt in the Muenster district. Following his education at St. Gertrude School, he worked on the family farm. For several years, during the winter months, Edmond was employed at various bush camps in northern Ontario until the winter of 1951-1952. In the fall of 1953, he bought a half-section of land north of Lintlaw. On July 12, 1955, Edmond married Viola Mohaw. Their union was blessed with four children, three sons and one daughter. In 1959, Ed, Viola and their first two children moved to Hinton, AB, where Ed worked for the Northwestern Pulp and Paper Co. During that time, two more children were born to them, thus completing their family. In 1977, after 17 and a half years at Hinton, Ed, Viola and their two youngest children came to Humboldt to reside. Ed was employed as a custodian at Humboldt Collegiate. Sadly, on October 13, 1978, Viola passed away. In his leisure time over the years, Ed loved fishing, and building birdhouses and replica homestead houses. More than anything, Ed’s life revolved around his precious family; he was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. In 1989, Ed met Rose Schlekewy and in October 1990, she moved to Humboldt. They became good friends who enjoyed each other’s company and shared a love of dancing, quilting, gardening, playing cards and going on many trips to Rose’s farm at St. Walburg. “Ed was a loving partner, step-father, and step-grandfather, the best we could have had. Due to failing health over the years, on February 12, 2014, Ed became a resident of the Villa, his home until the present. Ed is survived by his partner, Rose Schlekewy, Humboldt, SK; his four children: Terry Bunz(Mary-Anne Bleich), Port Coquitlam, BC, Kevin Bunz, North Battleford, SK, Cheryl Wegleitner, Humboldt, SK, and Mark(Kim) Bunz, Salmon Arm, BC; his grandchildren: Marvin, Morgan, Matthew, Chris, Justin, Shawna, Tyler and Dayna; his great-grandchildren: Parker and Sophia; Rose’s children: Rosemarie(Cliff), Lloydminster, SK, Joanne(Ron), St. Walburg, SK, Maddy, Humboldt, SK, Dorothy, St. Walburg, SK, Shirley(Nor m), Lloydminster, SK, Jim, Donna(Clinton), and John(Sandra), all of St. Walburg, SK, and Gerry(Herb), Bruno, SK; her grandchildren: Chad, Dean(Jill), Corine(Darren), Kelsi, Jodi, Raya, Calla, and Alana; her great-grandchildren: Lawson and Frankie Rose; Ed’s two brothers: Otto Bunz of Humboldt, SK, and Carl Bunz of St. Mary’s Villa, Humboldt, SK. He was predeceased by his wife, Viola (nee Mohaw) Bunz (October 13, 1978); daughter-in-law, Doris (nee Rauert) Bunz; parents, Adam and Bertha (nee Jung) Bunz; five brothers: Johannes Bunz, Henry Bunz, Raymond Bunz, Norbert Bunz, and Walter Bunz; and by step-son Robert. The Funeral Mass was held at St. Augustine R.C. Church, Humboldt, on Thursday, July 2, 2015, at 11:00 a.m., celebrated by Fr. Ephraim Mensah. Others taking part were: Chris Bunz, crossbearer; Alana Giesbrecht, urnbearer; Donna Gory and Kevin Bunz, scripture readers; Rosemarie Schlekewy, intentions; Jodi and Kelsi Schlekewy, and Raya and Calla Giesbrecht, giftbearers; Shawna Ramsay and Dayna Bunz, special music; and Val Kuemper, memorial table attendant. Honorary pallbearers were Ed’s grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. Interment followed at St. Augustine R.C. Cemetery, Humboldt. Memorial donations may be directed to either Muscular Dystrophy Canada or the Canadian Cancer Society. Schuler-Lefebvre Funeral Chapel, Humboldt, SK.
