DL Ed Camp FAQs
A transformational summer experience for educators WHAT IS DL ED CAMP? The Deeper Learning Ed Camp is a professional development experience unlike any other. Designed to be a transformational experience for K-12 educators, DL Ed Camp promises inspiration, rejuvenation, and connection with like-minded colleagues from around the country who believe in the power of deeper learning for students. During this 4-day, off-the-grid, summer camp-like program, participants will deep-dive into the challenges and possibilities related to the implementation of deeper learning in their classrooms, schools, and communities. DL Ed Campers will leave the experience inspired but also armed with practical tools and solutions ready for the new year. WHO IS EDCAMP DESIGNED FOR? DL Ed Camp is designed for K-12 educators who work at all levels of school systems who are interested in deeper learning, including classroom educators of all subjects and grade levels, principals, assistant principals, instructional coaches, and district-level administrators. WHAT WILL I DO/LEARN AT EDCAMP? During the application process, DL Ed Campers will be asked to share their role and their goals or a specific project related to implementing deeper learning practices. Participants will be divided into three strands based on the scope of your role: Curriculum Design, Systems Building, or Change Management. Through workshops and sessions designed by experienced educators and our featured speakers, Jal Mehta and Ron Berger, DL Ed Campers will explore the unique challenges in each role and work together, in small cohort “pods,” to brainstorm ideas and develop solutions. DL Ed Campers will produce and share tangible deliverables that will guide their work for the new school year. WHAT IF I’M NOT SURE WHAT I WANT TO WORK ON AT DL ED CAMP? On your application, it’s fine to leave the questions about a specific project blank, however we encourage you to share your vision and current challenges. A member of our team can work with you to refine your goals and a specific project over the course of the spring or once you arrive at DL Ed Camp. CAN I EARN COURSE CREDIT OR CEUs FOR MY PARTICIPATION IN DL ED CAMP? DL Ed Campers will receive a Certificate of Completion indicating the number of hours of professional development completed through the experience. Participants are responsible for determining whether their organization will accept the CEUs and for submitting the certificate. WHERE IS DL ED CAMP AND HOW DO I GET THERE? DL Ed Camp is hosted at the idyllic Beaver Hollow Conference Center, a property on over 300 acres of lakes and scenic woodlands just 45 minutes from Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF). We recommend flying into BUF and taking an Uber or Lyft to the Conference Center. WHY IS DL ED CAMP BEING HOSTED AT BEAVER HOLLOW? DL Ed Camp seeks to be different from other educator professional development experiences. Our team at HGSE/Deeper Learning Dozen believes that deeper learning happens best when participants are fully immersed. By getting away from daily to-do lists and distractions, and out of the traditional classroom or lecture hall, we want to create the conditions for deep reflection, connection, and powerful experiences that will not only transform your practice, but also you. We know that working in schools is the hardest work; educators deserve to learn in a beautiful setting, with nutritious meals, a warm atmosphere, and activities that will leave you relaxed, better connected to yourself, and feeling rejuvenated for the year ahead. WHAT ARE THE ROOMS LIKE?
Beaver Hollow’s rooms are double occupancy with two full-size beds and a large private bath. All rooms include wifi, cable TV, worktable, terry cloth bathrobe, iron, hairdryer, and shampoo. You may request a roommate or the DL Ed Camp team can help match you with someone. WHAT IF I HAVE SPECIAL DIETARY NEEDS OR MOBILITY RESTRICTIONS? We are pleased that Beaver Hollow will work with DL Ed Campers to ensure their comfort and satisfaction. Please indicate any special needs during the Application process. ARE SCHOLARSHIPS OR FINANCIAL AID AVAILABLE? We understand that school budgets can be tight and we do have limited funding available to supplement costs for the program. While we can provide some support for covering the costs of the workshop, we do not have funding to cover travel or travel-related expenses.
