Is HR ready to step up to the plate? Over the past year, we have seen organisations taking affirmative action towards becoming more peoplecentric. Things such as “corporate wellness” and “learning and development” have been discussed in the boardroom and at our conferences as often as “customer centricity” and “operational excellence”. And yet, as we look at the priorities of most HR directors going into 2017, “going digital” and “increasing productivity” in all areas of the business, including HR, seems to top the list more often than not. This development intrigued us. Is this an indication that HR teams have learnt the fine art of aligning business priorities to strategic HR priorities? Or is it a case of a few progressive organisations managing to push their agenda through despite a tough economic environment? Experiences and views vary, but there is consensus that HR today is more business-driven than ever and that some industries are further along the process than others.

Asha Menon is the director of human resources (Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam and Cambodia) at Agility Logistics and is responsible for heading the human resources division in line with the organisation’s goals. She recently relinquished her role as the vice-president of human resources at Citigroup. The past 13 years have been a learning curve going through corporate chapters of setting up HR departments, building talent pipelines, harmonisation work in mergers and acquisitions, organisational cultural transformation, design, leading and managing teams and individuals with the help of change strategies, and coaching and developing talent from mid-level to leadership roles. leadership roles.

Faz Kamaruddin is the group head of talent at AirAsia. She has more than 20 years of working experience. Her career has spanned various industries such as technology, consulting and engineering. Leading talent management at AirAsia, she is responsible for talent and leadership development initiatives to build the talent pipeline. A certified action learning coach with the World Institute of Action Learning, she was the recipient of the WIAL International Coaching Excellence Award for 2015.

Chloe Gan has more than 14 years of broad HR generalist background experience in diversified industries, including IT, retail and pharmaceuticals. Her role in HR not only focuses on the bottom line to develop, implement, deliver and drive HR strategies and initiatives, but also to ensure these strategies are successfully aligned with the business’ goals and objectives to proactively support its growth and success. Her current role as HR director at Arvato Systems Malaysia serves as the primary strategic partner to all the business unit heads and senior leaders in developing people strategies, change management initiatives, organisational/ departmental restructuring and much more to ensure these strategies support the growth and success of the business.

Farid Basir graduated in human resource management and has 22 years of experience in the various spectrums of HR management within diversified industries. He was assigned to Switzerland, South Africa and the Philippines during his 12 years with Nestlé, a multinational company. In addition to his post-graduate diploma in training and development, he is an alumnus of IMD, Switzerland, a top business school in Europe. He is currently pursuing his MBA with Edinburgh Business School, Heriot-Watt University. He has been awarded four global professional certifications – HRCI HR management professional, HRCI global HR professional, SHRM senior certified professional and global remuneration professional. He is a council member of the Malaysian Employer Federation.

Chen Fong Tuan is responsible for the end-to-end HR operations with a targeted emphasis on regional talent management, organisational development, resourcing, learning and development, performance management, manpower planning, employer branding and diversity initiatives for B. Braun Asia Pacific. As a member of the Asia Pacific HR Council, his portfolio also covers strategic HR initiatives including rewards, HR systems, etc.

Rebecca Khor is the director and head of human resources for BNP Paribas Malaysia. In her role, she is largely in charge of developing the overall strategy for human capital management at BNP Paribas Malaysia. She brings more than 16 years of professional experience in various HR roles across different industries. She has also won awards such as the HR Manager of the Year 2014, HR Best Practice Award 2014 and The HR Achievers Award 2016. She currently holds a professional certification in human resources CAHRI, HRMP and a bachelor of business administration (honours).

Marcela Mihanovich joined the Citi Malaysia team in March 2016. She started her career at Citi in 2002 as part of the HRMA programme and has worked across four different Citi locations – Argentina, Brazil, US and Singapore. She has transitioned from country to regional roles and from generalist to specialist roles supporting the majority of Citi’s business lines. Before Citi, she worked at different MNCs in Argentina where she kick-started her career in the HR field. Some of her notable areas of expertise are in recruitment, succession planning, talent management and leadership. She holds a BA in human resource management and a business administration graduate degree. She is also a neuro-linguistic programming practitioner, an LC3 coach, power of one facilitator and a triathlete mum. a Triathlete Mom.

Michelle-Ann Iking has been the head of talent, learning and performance management for Citi Malaysia since 2013. She is responsible for designing and executing talent initiatives to ensure the firm has the right people in the most critical roles, and developing successors for a pipeline of diverse talent. Her team focuses on enhancing managerial and leadership capability as well as enabling employees to drive their own development and careers. Before this position, she was with Citibank, London, as the campus strategy manager for EMEA. There she led the campus marketing strategy for programmes to build the graduate talent pipeline spanning school leavers, undergraduate/ master’s, MBA and PhD students. She oversaw the execution of more than 280 campus events encompassing a wide variety of graduate talentattraction initiatives.

As the regional HR lead for Dell Malaysia, Muniandy Maruthiah drives human resources strategies that support the company’s vision, transformation and continued growth. He has extensive experience in marketing communications, customer care, learning and development, in addition to HR generalist and specialist functions in the electronics and telecommunications industries. Under his leadership, both Dell Malaysia and Singapore have won numerous Employer of Choice and HR Innovation awards. He obtained his master’s in business administration from Federation University, Australia; master’s in arts from University Science Malaysia and a post graduate degree in management from Cranfield University, UK. He sits on the talent corporation diversity and inclusion committee and strongly advocates women in leadership excellence initiatives in the northern region of Malaysia.

Christopher Ong joined DHL Express in October 2006 as vicepresident of business development at the Asia Pacific regional office and was responsible for mergers and acquisitions, partnerships and planning for the region. He subsequently took on additional responsibilities in 2009 to drive DHL’s First Choice (Six Sigma) and GOGREEN corporate programmes for Asia Pacific. In October 2011, he was appointed country manager of DHL Express Vietnam and he took on his current role in March 2014. Before joining DHL in 2006, he spent about 10 years with Temasek Holdings where he was responsible for originating, evaluating and executing investments as well as managing and restructuring companies around the globe. He graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering from Tufts University, US.

Yvonne Teng is the HR business partner to three major business units in Ericsson which encompasses 80% of the total Ericsson population in the region. With 19 years of experience in human resources management, she has extensive experience in talent management, workforce planning, total rewards and talent acquisition. During her employment at Ericsson, she has held roles as the subject matter expert in compensation and benefits, HR generalist and HR business partner which has given her a broad spectrum as a human resources expert in the organisation. Before Ericsson, she was with EDS-HP covering SEA. She took the lead in compensation and benefits in the merger exercise between EDS and HP in Malaysia. In addition to her role as a subject matter expert in compensation and benefits, she is the advisor on post-sales activities in the outsourcing business. At Computer Associates, she was the country head of HR in Malaysia setting up the HR unit and successfully transforming the HR function from operational to a business partner.

Ramesh Kumar Singam is the managing director of FedEx Express Malaysia. Managing more than 880 employees, he oversees the day-to-day FedEx operations in Malaysia and is responsible for developing and executing its corporate strategies. He joined FedEx Malaysia in 1993 as a training specialist and was promoted to managing director of operations in 2000. In 2003, he relocated to Singapore and took the position of managing director of operations for FedEx Singapore and Indonesia. In June 2009, he returned to Malaysia to resume the role of managing director for operations for FedEx Malaysia.

TP Chua graduated with a MA in industrial and organisational psychology. She brings with her extensive experience in higher education, training, learning and development in both education and the corporate arena. She started her career at Infineon under HR learning and development and has set up three comprehensive talent management programmes at Infineon in the past five years. Many talent who have graduated from these programmes have been successfully placed into key positions. She has recently taken a new role in HR future work which explores mega trends, stakeholders management, diversity management and corporate health management. She is passionate about people development and growing their potential.

Victor Phang is the regional GM of iTalent Management whose endeavour is to improve talent management through cloud technology globally, which has gained him market recognition. His latest achievement was leading iTalent Management to win the award of BPO Project of the Year 2014 and 2015, HR Innovation Award 2014, and the Asia Pacific ICT Award 2015. He has a master’s degree in executive management. Before he joined iTalent, he worked in Japanese and Korean conglomerates. He was awarded Panasonic’s Innovative Excellence Award 2005. In 2007, he was conferred the award of Samsung’s Outstanding Employee for Marketing Team of The Year.

Ritish Reddy kick-started the APAC operations for KNOLSKAPE in 2014 and currently leads the region’s operations. In his current role, he is responsible for defining the vision, strategy and execution of KNOLSKAPE’s expansion in the APAC region. Before KNOLSKAPE, he was working as a consultant at the Global Consulting Practice of the TCS where he was leading the product development efforts for digitising the treasury system of a government agency. Before that, he co-founded 35mmpro, a marketplace connecting photographers with consumers. He has a bachelor’s degree in electrical and electronics engineering from Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) and a global master’s in business administration in advance corporate finance and banking management from SP Jain School of Global Management.

With a diverse portfolio of F&B brands spanning the country, award-winning entrepreneur Bryan Loo has now dominated the premium quick service and fast casual restaurant business in Malaysia. His ability in identifying promising ventures to fill opportunity gaps in the market, while mastering the delicate balance between consistency, quality and high volume is the driving force behind Loob Holding. The company first took off with automated quick service kiosks, then transitioned to full-scale restaurants, and now technology start-up investments are in the pipeline. Just in his early 30s, he is a culinary business proprietor, owning a company that is currently serving nearly three million consumers per month from more than 200 outlets across the country. Loob Holding envisions serving five million customers every month from 400 outlets while exploring a regional expansion by the end of 2017.

Karen Yap is a highly successful, business-focused HR leader with intimate knowledge and direct experience of several industries in both local and multinational companies. She built strong early foundations in HR at Gamuda as the senior manager of human resources. Subsequently, she developed her flexibility and learning agility as she took on roles of increasing responsibility at AIG, Nike, Eli Lilly, Green Packet, and then back to the insurance industry with Zurich Insurance Malaysia. In 2013 she was appointed to her current role of chief human resources officer at Manulife Holdings. In her most recent role, she has been instrumental in bringing change and operational excellence to the HR team, the workplace and in driving dramatic improvements in the employee engagement scores. Yap is particularly sought out by business leaders as a trusted advisor as she thinks through the challenging business of building and leading organisations to excellent results. In October 2016, she was crowned HR professional of the Year – 2016 awarded by the reputable Human Resources Magazine.

A chemical engineer by training with more than 20 years of experience in the HR services industry in Europe, the Middle East and Asia, Sam Haggag has a wealth of experience in the implementation of HR solutions and best practices gained from working with a wide range of local and multinational organisations. He joined ManpowerGroup in 1999 and headed up the Manpower Singapore operations until March 2003. In 2003, he was appointed the regional account director for the Manpower Asia regional office and promoted to field development director for Asia Pacific in 2007. In 2011, he was promoted to managing director of Experis, the ManpowerGroup’s professional services arm for Asia Pacific and the Middle East, and in 2014 took over responsibility for ManpowerGroup’s managed services solutions in Asia Pacific and the Middle East. Monir Azzouzi is the head of employee experience and branding at Maxis and had extensive experience in both the start-up and corporate environments in the digital world before venturing into the field of human resources. His utilisation of analytics to foster a digital mindset and engagement among leaders and experts is reflected in the high adoption rates of digital tools as well as unprecedented doubledigit growth in the employee engagement scores over the past three years. He is currently also leading the business and IT transformation from a people and organisational perspective, tasked to facilitate change management in preparation towards the future challenges and aspirations of Maxis as a truly digital company by 2018. He has studied and worked across several countries in Europe, Africa and Asia, having acquired his master’s degree in management of innovation and business development from Copenhagen Business School, Denmark.

Dr Henry Yeoh is the deputy president of the Malaysian Institute of Human Resource Management (MIHRM). He has also been appointed to the Malaysia Advisory Board by the International Supply Chain Education Alliance (ISCEA). His recent involvement in the HR community was being appointed as a member of the National HR Leadership Council by MIHRM as well as serving as a member of the 2015 Global Advisory Council of the World HRD Congress. He is a multiple HR leadership awards recipient: Global HR Excellence Award (2010 World HRD Congress); HR Leader of the Year – gold award and Employer of Choice silver award (2013 Malaysia HR Awards); and HR Leadership Award (2014 World HRD Congress) in recognition of his 30plus years as a HR practitioner and senior strategic business partner.

Chella Pandian is the HR director for Merck Sharp & Dohme (MSD) and drives the HR function for Malaysia, Singapore and the Brunei zone in addition to overseeing HR for Indonesia and Thailand. His key responsibility includes spearheading HR leadership and driving organisational development through best HR practices and HR strategies. He has been with MSD for the past five years. Before this role, he was in a global HR role managing emerging markets for Merck consumer care as an HR business partner and was also the HR business partner for MSD India for two years.

Badariah Jalil joined Petra Energy in 2012 as the senior general manager of group human capital and was appointed director of group human capital in 2014. Before that, she held the position of director of human capital for the New Straits Times Press (M), one of the largest publishing conglomerates owned by Media Prima. She served as group HR head for Media Prima for 10 years and was vice-president of HR for Celcom for 12 years. Her consulting experience was sharpened when she worked for PricewaterhouseCoopers for two years. She attended the University of Hull, United Kingdom, where she obtained a master’s in business administration majoring in human resource development (1995). She is also a certified trainer for performance management systems and targeted selection from DDI and obtained her management development certification from INSEAD.

Shazmi Ali is a seasoned and broad experienced human resources leader in Malaysia. With almost two decades of both commercial and HR experience, he has been instrumental in the many organisations he has served. He has a wide range of experience in various industries – manufacturing, healthcare, IT, oil and gas, aviation and pharmaceutical. He is currently the human resources director for Malaysia, Vietnam, Indo China and Brunei of the world’s leading 150-year old biopharmaceutical company, Pfizer. He is described as a true commercial HR leader that strongly embodies the people above systems philosophy. He has been credited as a Global 100 Most Influential HR Person.

Fazilah Yusof is the chief human resources officer at Prudential and has been a member of the executive committee of Prudential BSN Takaful since December 2014. Her overall responsibility is for planning, implementing, managing and controlling all people-related activities of the company, including the direct responsibility for people development, staff engagement, talent management and succession planning. She has 26 years of experience in multinational and local organisations within diverse industries, including oil and gas, financial services and industrial. She holds a master’s degree in human resources management from Open University Malaysia (OUM), Malaysia.

Choo Kok Wai, or Adriad as he is affectionately known as, has been working for Puratos Malaysia – a subsidiary of Puratos NV with its worldwide headquarters in Groot-Bijgaarden, Brussels – as a human resources and administration director for four years. His main tasks include promoting Puratos Magic (a set of DNA with six values and seven principles that forms the culture of Puratos), recruitment and staffing, organisational and space planning, performance management and improvement systems, employment and compliance to regulatory concerns, policy development and documentation, employee relations, compensation and benefits administration, employee safety, welfare, wellness and health.

Ling Hsern-Wei is the general manager of human capital at PwC Malaysia (Malaysia’s Top Graduate Employer 2013, 2012 and a three gold winner at the HR Excellence Award 2014). He believes that learning and development is most effective when it moves beyond the classroom and is most transformative when it is designed into the work environment, activities and relationships. Jing Pei Goh-Asmala leads the people and organisation team at ServisHero, a purpose-driven startup with a mission to improve how local services are discovered and delivered in Southeast Asia. Before this, she was a senior leader at Teach For Malaysia, where she led the team to win the National Best Graduate Programme in 2015. She also cofounded the Otak-Otak programme, a social enterprise with an integrated internship and leadership development programme to tackle brain drain issues in Malaysia.

Vaclav Koranda is the vicepresident of human resources and a member of the board of directors at T-Systems Malaysia. He has held executive roles in human resources in several companies since 2002, namely in the ICT industry. For a significant part of his career, his role has also included regional responsibility, mainly for the region of Central/ Eastern Europe. Before joining T-Systems Malaysia, he was the VP of HR at T-Systems Czech Republic. A Gen-Y HR leader, he has worked in various organisations at a local and regional level and has more than 10 years of experience, primarily in hospitality, property development and retail. In his current role, he spearheads the human resources function in the development of human capital strategies within the UOA Hospitality Group in driving excellence and growth. His primary focus is building human capital capability and a talent pipeline through efficient talent acquisition and management as well as driving the employer branding effort within the hospitality group.
