BALANCING YOUR EMPLOYEE BENEFITS When it comes to rewarding staff and implementing compensation and benefits programmes, many organisations throughout the region still seem to face a number of dilemmas. And it’s a difficult balance to keep employees happy. On one hand, you’ve got staff saying they want A, B and C from you to feel appreciated and rewarded – and you want to give it to them. You really do. Because you know that listening to their needs and trying to accommodate them is one of the best ways to retain good people in a tight, under-skilled market. Yet on the other hand, you’re reluctant. The cost can be huge, and you’re not even sure that what you’re able to offer will really make a difference and give you the ROI you can be proud to show your CEO. In fact, one recent study found that despite 40% of organisations in Asia Pacific spending a fifth of their payroll on benefits, just half of HR leaders believe their employees actually value what has been made available.

SPEAKERS JAY ARCEGA Senior global mobility specialist, APAC Black & Veatch Jay Arcega originally started his corporate career as a finance, accounting and compensation practitioner in IBM Philippines prior to moving to global mobility. He built his relocation profession as an expatriate assignment consultant in Cartus, and eventually moved as a senior global mobility specialist to Black & Veatch. In a span of four years, he has been recognised for his outstanding service and innovation, with multiple wins to boot. His mobility experience encompasses relocation co-ordination, mobility policy review and recommendation (including expatriate compensation items), supplier management, expatriate payroll deliverables and group project management.

KHOR LING LING Deputy director performance & rewards Changi General Hospital Khor Ling Ling is an experienced compensation and benefits professional. A graduate in actuarial science from the University of Iowa, she enjoys applying her statistical and insurance knowledge to her compensation and benefits work. She has accumulated experience as a practitioner, consultant and facilitator. Being in the compensation and benefits arena for nearly 15 years, she believes a rewarding career is one that enables continuous learning and improvement. She started her career as a consulting analyst with Buck Consultants and found passion and relevancies in her studies and work. She accumulated her C&B knowledge and experiences during her stints with major companies such as Mercer and Siemens.

ADITI MAHADEVAN ADIT Sen human resource generalist Senior Citibank NA Cit Aditi Mahadevan is an HR professional with more than 12 years of experience in banking and telecom organisations in Singapore and India. She has had extensive experience in business partnering, compensation and benefits and L&D. As an HR business partner, she has handled a variety of HR areas to drive the people strategy for the business, including talent acquisition, university programmes, performance and talent management, employee relations and employee engagement. As a C&B specialist, she has been instrumental in designing and implementing rewards and benefits plans in South Asia. In her current role as a senior HR business partner, she is responsible for partnering with the regional operations and technology teams in Singapore. She works in partnership with the business heads to provide support which enables them to effectively deliver their people plans. She is also a certified MBTI Practitioner and a results coaching certified coach.

ROSALINE KOO Founder & CEO ConneXionsAsia Rosaline Koo is the founder and CEO of ConneXionsAsia (CXA), an employee benefits and healthcare big data start-up. Before CXA, she led Mercer Marsh Benefits in 14 countries across Asia Pacific, growing the business by 800% over eight years. She also worked for ACE Insurance, Bankers Trust and Procter & Gamble. SPEAKERS EUDORA CHOO VP, benefits governance, APAC Deutsche Bank AG Eudora Choo works for Deutsche Bank as vice-president for benefits governance, covering 16 countries in Asia Pacific. She is responsible for regulatory compliance, financial management and the strategic and creative drive of a wide array of benefits programmes for 18,000 employees in the region. Before joining Deutsche Bank, she spent many years in the area of benefits consulting and human resources with large MNCs serving a diverse clientele. She established impactful stakeholder outcomes and sustainable commercial value through implementing complex changes and forward-looking initiatives relating to health and wellness, flexible benefits, insurance arrangement and employee engagement strategies. Choo holds a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in management. She is also a senior associate of The Australian and New Zealand Insurance Institute, a certified Six Sigma Brown Belt and a trained medical underwriter with an in-depth understanding of the healthcare environment in Asia.

KATHY GOH Director, HR shared services DFS Group Kathy Goh looks after global HR shared services for the DFS Group. Before being appointed global head of HR shared services, she was DFS’ Asia head for compensation and benefits. Before joining DFS, she was the Asia operations manager and Asia payroll manager looking after HR employee services at Citibank. Her other HR appointments include vice-president of rewards at MediaCorp and regional rewards and operations manager with Visa International. She has many years of HR experience, mainly in compensation and benefits and HR shared services.

SPEAKERS REBECCA LEWIS Editor Human Resources As editor of Human Resources magazine, Rebecca Lewis oversees all editorial print and online content for Singapore. In her role, she is responsible for leading the thought-provoking and quality industry content for a growing senior-level HR readership, as well as strategically growing the brand’s presence and reach online, and through a growing number of industry events, conferences and awards shows. Lewis joined Lighthouse Independent Media as editor of Human Resources in early 2012, but she is no stranger to Singapore having spent 13 years growing up here in her earlier years. An experienced journalist and magazine editor, Lewis was previously editor of Singapore’s ANZA magazine. Before this, she spent six years working across multiple award-winning newspaper titles at APN News & Media in her home country of New Zealand.

HANS HAN Head, C&B, APAC Huntsman Hans Han is the head of compensation and benefits for Asia Pacific at Huntsman. He is responsible for the overall C&B strategies and programmes in Asia Pacific. He has more than 17 years of work experience in various disciplines, including business, general management and human resources management. He started as a trainer who progressed into HR consulting and eventually regional compensation and benefits with multinational corporations. He has trained, presented to and consulted thousands of executives and professionals across the region, including many Fortune 500 companies. His more recent engagements include compensation benchmarking, sales incentive design, and regional benefits reviews. He has worked for prestigious firms such as Hay Group, Mercer HR Consulting, Jones Lang LaSalle and Johnson Controls.

NEHA PAREEK Talent leader, APAC, Greater China & Africa

IBM Neha Pareek is the business and technical talent leader for IBM’s Global Business Services unit covering three growth regions – Asia Pacific, Greater China Group and Middle East and Africa. She leads the talent partners in these regions to build the leadership pipeline and manages the appointment and placement of executives to support IBM’s growth objectives. She has a strong background and understanding of global mobility programmes, leadership development, talent acquisition, succession planning and HR operations. In her role, she manages more than 500 executives spread across 140 countries. She holds a Masters in industrial psychology from Bangalore University and has a human resource certification from Harvard University.

LAU YIN CHENG Cluster director HR & organisation development Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore Lau Yin Cheng helps support the Singapore government’s vision of a smart nation. He leads more than 50 people to recruit, motivate and develop a talent pool of infocomm specialists, and is constantly exploring innovative, cutting-edge solutions to enhance talent attraction and engagement in a highly dynamic sector. Before IDA, he served as CHRO for the Ascott Group, where he led a team of nearly 100 HR professionals across multiple countries. He also set up Ascott’s global L&D centre and the Ascott Centre of Excellence to support its aggressive growth plan. Before Ascott, he was the CHRO and vice-president of strategic development of SembCorp Logistics, one of Asia’s largest third-party logistics providers.

SPEAKERS JOHN LACKEY Director, global mobility Jabil Originally from the United States, John Lackey is now based in Singapore and has been in the Asia region for more than 15 years, living and working in Singapore, China, India, Hong Kong and Japan. He is currently the director of global mobility for Jabil and is responsible for managing global talent mobility, and has a team based in the US and Asia. Before this, he held positions at Cisco, Goldman Sachs and Microsoft as head of the Asia region mobility programme. He holds a Masters degree in international management and speaks Mandarin, Chinese.

PATRICIA GOH Regional head C&B, APAC MasterCard International Patricia Goh drives the rewards agenda for MasterCard to create value proposition and employee engagement through effective compensation and benefits strategies and then communicates their value. She has extensive HR experience and industry knowledge in the payments business, financial services sector and the government sector. Before moving into this role, she was the senior HRBP for MasterCard, where she gained a wide breadth of experience partnering with businesses across the Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa region to shape their talent agenda. Before MasterCard, she headed the compensation and benefits function at OCBC Bank, and before that was with the Ministry of Defence. She holds a Bachelor in Business Administration from the National University of Singapore.

BORIS BIRYUKOV Region head C&B, OTC IntOps/animal health, APAC Novartis Boris Biryukov was born in 1983 in Moscow. He was appointed to his current role in March 2012 and relocated to Singapore from where he has been leading the compensation and benefits agenda for Novartis’ over-the-counter and animal health divisions across Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa, Russia and CIS countries. He joined Novartis in 2010 in Moscow where he provided full strategic and operational C&B support for two years, combining this with HRBP responsibilities for selected departments. Previously, he worked at the Moscow headquarters of Lafarge Company, where he gained diverse practical HR generalist and C&B experience. He graduated from Moscow Power Engineering Institute with a Bachelor’s degree in electrical power engineering and a specialist diploma in management. He is married with one son.

THOMAS A. FARMER Director, Asia rewards NXP Semiconductors Tom Farmer is the Asia rewards director for NXP Semiconductors, a US$5 billion high technology company. He supports about 20,000 employees in Asia, including manufacturing, R&D, sales and multiple business units. Farmer was formerly the vice-president of compensation and benefits for InterContinental Hotels Group. He joined IHG in 2006, with responsibility for the Americas region, and was sent to Singapore in 2007 to develop the Asia Pacific region’s total rewards practices. Following repatriation, he returned to Singapore to join Mercer as principal and APAC leader for global mobility. He has been involved with managing rewards and global mobility for more than 25 years.

SPEAKERS MARK ROBINSON Executive general manager, EMEA & APAC Power2Motivate Mark Robinson is the general manager of Power2Motivate Asia Pacific and is responsible for operations in the APAC region, delivering worldclass employee recognition and B2B loyalty programmes to a wide range of clients. Before moving to Australia, he worked for a FTSE 100-listed organisation in the UK for almost nine years in a variety of brand management and HR functions. He is also a full member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and holds a degree in business management (BA Honours) from Newcastle University (UK).

JOON TAN VP, talent management, GSC Schneider Electric Joon Tan is an HR professional with more than 25 years of experience. She started her HR career in industrial relations in the airline industry before taking on a leadership role with United Airlines. Bitten by the technology bug in early 2000, she spent the next 10 years at Intel and Dell, assuming different leadership roles across APAC and beyond. During this time, her primary focus as a HRBP saw her involvement in organisational design, leadership development, succession planning, M&A, divestiture, start-ups for new business and right sizing. In her time at Dell, she also assumed responsibility as the first ethics director in APAC, where she helped the development and roll out of the company programme, while influencing the corporate strategy. She spent the next four and a half years with Mercer as the high-tech industry leader for the C&B solutions business. She is currently the global supply chain vice-president for talent management at Schneider Electric based in Singapore.

JACLYN LEE Senior director, HR & organisation development Singapore University of Technology and Design Jaclyn Lee handles the full spectrum of HR and is one of the pioneer team members charged with starting up the new university from scratch. She has helped facilitate key strategic workshops to drive the vision and mission, and is also responsible for helping the top management team develop plans and goals to drive this.
