If you ask most manufacturers what 3D is, they’ll say “design and creation”. But 3D is much more than an image for cut experts. It is reality in the computer — a reality which becomes part of a closed process chain. This requires the accurate simulation of humans, materials and cuts. And that’s why our 3D doesn’t just affect brainstorming in design — it also impacts throughout the whole chain, right to the finished garment. And our new 2013 functions make this even more apparent. Our opinion? This is scintillating cinema and magnificent material for Hollywood.

Vidya 20.13 — Focus on usability and material

For us, 2013 is the year of the user and material simulation. Many new features make using Vidya more friendly and efficient. Material is all about textures and colors.

To this end, Vidya 20.13 has integrated the Human Solutions Group’s intensive basic research of recent years — but we have also raised the stakes in the simulation of human beings and cuts.

The crew of “The 3D Story” The movie “The 3D Story”, closely interlinks people, materials and cuts. This results in perfect simulation of your collections. And in 2013, this is supported by a whole new range of functions.

People in 3D: The Vidya population says hello Vidya 20.13 is delivered with an extensive population of scanatars and fashion manikins from the SizeGERMANY serial measurement survey — but the creation of individual target group scanatars in iSize and their transfer to Vidya is also possible.

And there’s a lot more happening than just more scanatars — the animation in Vidya has also been expanded.

Animations can now be loaded, managed in Vidya (overview!) and automatically assigned to a scanatar.

3D material: Lots of innovation Fast change: linen instead of cord? Or are jeans better? No problem! Fabric textures (> 100 MB) can be dragged directly from the file system to the current simulation and used right away. And the same applies to applications and images. So the level of detail in fabrics has consequently been greatly increased, as has the material thickness (now 3 cm) — welcome to the down jackets look, shoulder pads and bra pads! Vidya now also reproduces shiny structures, partial gloss and iridescent and crease effects as well as fine tone-on-tone patterns. And fabric textures and seams are shown both outside and inside.

Color your world: With OverlayColor you can color any texture in any color of a colorway. Photoshop color palettes (*.aco) can also be imported as overlay colors.

Time for seams: Seams can be better reproduced and displayed in 2013. Seam textures support glossy, matte and overlaid colors — and they can be colored differently per stitch to simulate parallel multi-colored seams.

3D cut: Simpler preparation Sewing à la carte: Preliminary work in CAD is getting easier. Lists with presets per model type help you to transfer existing parameters easily. You can then modify them during the simulation — the metadata and the seam allowances for instance.

The multiple sewing of cuts in 2D CAD also generates significant time savings, made possible by one important change: 1:n stitching. Instead of equal length pieces, you can now sew several short pieces to a large piece, without having to set notches by hand. This preset is very useful for sewing shirts (armpit sockets in armholes), for example, or waistbands, etc. Easier positioning of hoods and collars, a 3D view of the current work steps on a 3D model and error messages that make it easier for the user to work more efficiently and faster are just three of the many 2013 Vidya enhancements.

And there’s yet another feature that we want to share with you: Vidya can now simulate 21 plies, one on top of the other. For instance: shirt, pocket, flap and logo. That should do for a start … (only 7 were previously possible).

Producer: Usability — Co-producer: 64-bit and data management Vidya thinks ahead. With the 64-bit version, the 3D software has significantly more work speed and an unlimited amount of memory. This increases resolution, security and speed, even for more complex simulations.

Now Vidya also has a much-improved level of usability in simulation creation: The tree includes scanatars, animations, floors and scenes. Everything can be put together individually. For instance: 50+ woman, raising and lowering of one arm, plus wooden floor and scene.

Many options are open to you, even in sectional imaging: Numerous Vidya database parameters, colors and simulation elements can be saved and reused in each simulation. For example: seams for the front and back with three options each for the seam beginning and end — non-stop, trimmed or perpendicular.

And once you are working with the new Vidya, you will really appreciate this feature: Pieces that you do not need can be easily frozen. So nothing can slip accidentally and simulation is even faster.

One highlight is the refining of the simulation resolution in already-simulated garments. Quickly conjure up the look you want in coarse resolution and achieve an optimal simulation result by refining the resolution of the grid in your final simulations.

The most interesting thing about simulation is of course the result … but you don’t always have to expend a lot of effort for your simulation — if you only want to check seams and pre-positioning, for example, a preview is available in Vidya.Cad.

What is so special about your movie?

What is the most significant thing about the film “The 3D Story”?

We’re showing a 3D movie of a different kind. The imaging is 3D — as is Vidya the actress. You could say it’s a 3D film about 3D.

It shows the highly developed status quo of Vidya and how this form of design presents itself to the fashion process. Many are still not aware of this even today.

Who should use 3D? Anyone who is serious about it. Vidya is the most powerful 3D system on the market. To see 3D simply as an improved Corel Draw with human figures is a shame — that wastes a lot of potential. If you can drive a Mercedes, a smaller car will disappoint you sooner or later.

What should we bear in mind?

3D will only lighten my workload if I can use it to replace workflow steps in the physical world. Like controlling size & fit and cuts for example. And reducing physical prototypes by half saves significant material and production costs — and of course time.

What has 2013 changed for you?

I’m much more in touch with my users’ wishes — and I make their lives easier as a result.

What are your plans?

I want to participate in as many simulations as possible in a wide range of companies. And I can tell you this much … I’ll be cooperating even more intensively with my film partner Cad.Assyst.

Why use only data? Why not the whole software?

Automarker, Autocost and iSize have shown just how valuable the Cloud can be for the fashion industry.

Now it’s PLM’s turn … many companies already use PLM GoLive via the web. With the Remote Client or Flash Client, you can get your data — or even the whole software with all its features — straight from the Internet.

Nothing is left on your laptop or PC.

What is GoLive?

GoLive infrastructure

GoLive is the first comprehensive Fashion Cloud.

It provides data, formats and functions along the fashion process chain, from development to the store. And the GoLive portfolio is expanding rapidly. Today four programs are available from the Human Solutions Group — PLM, iSize, Automarker und Autocost — and all in the Cloud.

We love perfect technology. And that’s why the first Fashion Cloud GoLive has been living in the homeland of European data centers — Ireland — for quite a while now, with its second home in Germany. Our Cloud infrastructure has been developed around the first Fashion Cloud software, Automarker.

The data of all programs can already be exchanged in almost unlimited manner — mainly because with us you can sustainably develop your infrastructure in terms of servers, storage and speed — and all via the Cloud.

And the same applies to backups. However, the data path through the Cloud also offers additional benefits, like data conversion. In the GoLive Cloud, it’s immaterial if you work with CAD 20.12 and your partner has the 20.13 version. And you can use Automarker to convert third-party formats (like most Lectra and Gerber versions) — all in the Cloud.

GoLive will continue to grow. We are continuously expanding our infrastructure for you, bringing more and more of our technologies to the Cloud.

Today our system is so highly efficient that it can support entire fashion processes. Around 350 companies access the Cloud on an almost daily basis. And GoLive is growing fast. In the last years our server landscape — and consequently the capacity — grew tenfold.

So you’re guaranteed to have enough space with us. And your data is also securely protected. Our Cloud programs have the latest user rights concepts. And our servers have top-level availability and performance. We host our data in a high-security data center in accordance with ISO/IEC 27001, offering you the same security standards demanded, for example, by the banking sector for instance.

And if you prefer to make a fixed commitment … several applications of the GoLive Cloud are also available as a private Cloud for your company.

Why the GoLive Cloud?

During the development of GoLive, one central issue was always in the foreground: How does the Cloud technology make sense from an entrepreneurial point of view? Fashion needs shorter lead times — and here the GoLive Cloud makes a real difference. Individual departments receive better support for their workflows and their technology requirements. When functions are available on demand, peak times will no longer see the laborious installation of licenses on stationary computers. An access code is enough to enter the Cloud — and you can start working right away. Data exchange with partners is also easier and less error-prone. What Automarker has already proven on the market also functions today for PLM … and for other programs in the near future.

Quality counts, not just speed. Expertise is also required — and it is becoming rarer in cutting, either because it has been transferred to partners or because there are simply no trainees. Our technologies capture this central core knowledge about size & fit and cutting/laying — and make it available automatically.

This works even better in the Cloud. And the same applies in the reverse situation, when qualified personnel like pattern makers are consulted externally. Traditional IT environments effectively isolate a company, but with the Cloud you target and involve all relevant personnel.

When KTC Manager Gerhard Flatz speaks about quality, he means the highest possible quality. And he makes the same demands on technology as he does on his products. It’s a means to an end — and that is to focus on the essentials in the fashion process: size & fit, traditional cutting competence and profitability. He explains to us the KTC view of 3D, the Cloud and process integration. fashion: The name KTC stands for Knowledge, Technology and Craft. What role does software play for your company?

Flatz: For us, technology has the same status as a high level of expertise and manual skills. That’s the core of our philosophy. KTC produces the highest quality for the most demanding apparel brands in areas such as sailing, running and occupational safety. Our secret is simple: We promote the knowledge and the skills of our employees — and software is our tool to get the best out of both. fashion: The industry is changing. In your opinion, what opportunity must the apparel industry not pass up?

Flatz: We should all start to focus more on size & fit again. In many areas, the knowledge of how to implement size & fit and wearer comfort into a good design has either been completely lost — or at the very least pushed into the background. Good prices were paramount. Now we’re starting to feel the effects of this policy. There are hardly any model makers left. And now the main problem is that SizeGERMANY has shown that people have changed — at least from a pattern maker’s perspective. We in the functional clothing market segment are the first to feel this — because our products must not only look good, they have to function — in rain, cold weather, when it’s hot and when the wearer is moving. Size & fit is one of the key functionalities here, as is breathability.

fashion: How do you deal with this at KTC? Flatz: We reflect on the old virtues and link them with technical innovation: good size & fit first requires knowledge of the interaction between dimensions, body shape and cut. We supplement this knowledge with manual technical skills for processing. We need new technologies to stay profitable — and we can’t do this without the Cloud and 3D. fashion: Size & fit and the Cloud are two issues that we don’t normally associate with one another … What benefits do you see here?

Flatz: At first we thought we could use the Cloud for simple data exchange with our customers… like a central data portal for example. That’s why we talked with the Human Solutions Group — only then did we understand the full potential of the GoLive Cloud. Together with our customers we would be able to reproduce the entire process from collection development to delivery. Truly incredible. And we’re giving a lot of thought to initial pilot projects too.

fashion: How does the GoLive Cloud fit into KTC’s philosophy?

Flatz: For me GoLive Cloud, 3D with Vidya and the new integration possibilities provide the launch pad for a kind of second intelligent globalization. Thanks to the Cloud, it’s as if our customers were working in the office next door. The interaction between CAD, PLM and ERP enables full coordination between different sites — right when it’s needed during the process. fashion: How would working with clients look in practice?

Flatz: There are many possibilities. Here are just two: We could help our customers seamlessly with their size & fit optimization. Without the Cloud that would be a tedious task, with lots of conference calls, e-mails and mailed prototypes. With the Cloud, a basic cut is created in China — and the customer in Europe is directly linked to this.

This means we can actively help to adapt the basic cut to the size & fit philosophy of the brand. GoLive Cloud does all this. Human Solutions has shown great foresight here.

But the Cloud also works in daily business. We can relieve the customer of routine tasks such as BOM generation. We use simulation instead of physical samples for the initial coordination. Or we don’t exchange data, but swap results and processes via the Cloud. And we’re getting faster and better every time … so we can optimize production more effectively than ever before. fashion: By now you’ve built up quite a bit of Cloud expertise. Which selection criteria are the most important?

Flatz: The benefit gained in practice, plus security and stability. But the GoLive Cloud is not a leap of faith for us.

We use iSize for size & fit information — we optimized five million pieces last year with Automarker. These are textbook Cloud applications. If we had printed studies or stationary software installed, the effort involved for us would have been much more intensive. This way we can sit back and relax, because maintenance and updates run centrally and our data is backed up professionally.
