HULME HALL HISTORY

Hulme Hall prides itself not only on it's expansive and rich history, but on it's traditions which still inspire hall life today. Our accommodation blocks are all named after people and places which shaped the hall as we know it now.

The history of Hulme Hall dates all the way back to 1691 when Manchester landowner William Hulme left his property to trustees and their heirs. In 1869, William Houldsworth, trustee of Owens College (which formed the foundations of the University) formed a Church of England hall for it's students.

As the University evolved into what we know it as today, so did Hulme Hall. The hall was first opened on a site in Plymouth Grove in January 1887, and moved to Houldsworth on the current site in July 1907, housing just 40 students. By 1967, Birley, Greenwood, Christie, Plymouth and Oaklands were constructed, with Burkhardt House finished in 1994.

Hulme Hall benefits from a strong alumni association of former students who are proud to have called it home.

RESLIFE The Residential Life (ResLife) team at Hulme Hall and Burkhardt House are here to make sure that all of you get the best possible experience of life in our hall community. They’ll be your first port of call for any problems you might encounter while living in Hulme and Burkhardt. You can contact them about issues relating to accommodation, welfare, academic concerns, safety or any aspect of student life – and if they can’t help you resolve it, they’ll be able to point you in the right direction for more support and guidance.

The ResLife team are University staff and postgraduate students who live within the hall, so you’ll see them around most days.

Hulme and Burkhardt have a Residential Life Coordinator (RLC) who leads a team of Residential Life Advisors (RLAs). Each block in Hulme and Burkhardt has it's own dedicated RLA and you’ll meet your block RLA during Welcome Week. There will be regular block meetings during the year to give you an opportunity to meet your neighbours, raise any issues or concerns, and find out more about events, opportunities and activities within the hall and wider university community.

Overnight and during weekends, one member of the ResLife team will be on-call to help you with any urgent issues and emergencies, so you’ll always have support when you need it. They also work closely with the us, the JCR committee making sure that there is a wide range of social, sporting and community events throughout the year to suit a wide range of tastes and interests.

THE JCR

The Junior Common Room is a student community, comprised of all the residents of Hulme Hall and Burkhardt House, ran by a student committee, and led by the Senior Student. The work done by the JCR is supported by the ResLife Team at Hulme Hall and The University of Manchester's Students' Union.

The committee's job is to run socials, trips, events and sporting activities for all residents throughout the year. Past events have included Comedy Nights, Hulme Hall's Got Talent, Pub Quizes, Escape Rooms, the amazing Annual Formal Ball and the spectacular Hulme Fest BBQ. These are only a taste of what's on offer for residents, so always be on the look out for what's happening in Hulme and Burkhardt.

Since the JCR is student-led, we are always looking for suggestions for new and exciting activities, and ways in which we can improve the hall's community. Do get in touch with any of our JCR committee members, or any RLA, if you want any advice or more info.

GETTING INVOLVED

The JCR elects its new members every year and you can run for one of the positions available on the JCR committee! The majority of the JCR elections happen in October each year. Standing in any student election is a great thing to do while at University, and standing for a role on your JCR is no exception. It's a great chance to get stuck into Halls life, meet loads of new people, all while developing organisational, event management and communication skills - so that CV of yours is going to look pretty sweet!

You’ll get a say in how the hall is run in the interests of students, and you'll also be involved in planning a great freshers' week to welcome all our new Hulme and Burkhardt students next September. You will also be an instrumental part of the organisation team that puts on various fun and exciting events for the Hall all year round!

THE HULMANAC CHRONICLE Welcome one and welcome all to the illustrious Hulmanack Chronicle!

Now, you may be wondering, what is this superb piece of literature? Well dear, it’s a comprehensive fortnightly (ish) publication of Hall life. The chronicle is really a place for you, your thoughts, ideas, suggestions, complaints, and comments. It can provide a spectrum of interesting reading, from “The Advent of Pre-Revolutionary Tibetan Ceramic Design” to “The top 5 spots for a nap on campus” (we can’t really count past 5). Thus, this paper will give a firm basis for development of character and advancement of your cultural horizons to previously unheard-of limits. Failing that, it can prove very useful when one is stricken with a sudden lack of toilet paper.

On a more serious note, the Chronicle is here to keep you informed on Hall events- both social and sporting, plus provide you all with gossip, tales of woe, and other artsy things in between. As, I said, YOU are the contributors, so if you reckon that you have some sort of special talent for writing poetry, letters, short stories (no novels please), crosswords, caricatures, puzzles, or gardening tips, send it in. In fact, we’ll take in just about anything, so write in and show it off or, if you have no talent whatsoever, write in to complain. It’s all open to you! We urge you to get involved and sound off your creative (or non-creative) minds in any which way you so desire. Anonymity of course can be preserved!

There will be a small subcommittee of regular contributors who wish to have a column of their own, and the role of Chief Editor is open for election! This paper is truly what the Hulmans of Hulme (great title for a potential column btw) make it! So, get involved and have fun, the more you give to Hulme life, the more Hulme life will give to you!

ARTS AND SPORTS Hulme Hall has many practice spaces for the performing arts, including the Houldsworth Music Room, Lecture Theatre, Old Dining Hall and JCR room.

One of our more popular showcases is the ‘Live on Fridays’, where our very own Victoria Park Bar plays host to live bands, open mic nights and other ensembles. We’d love to get more art groups up and running for this year, and we need your help! If you have a talent or a knack for performing, and would like to share it with others, let us know!

The Hall boasts a multi-use pitch, snooker room, table tennis room, squash court and gym. Gym and squash court membership is £50 for the entire year and can be purchased from the reception during opening times. Sports on Campus run free drop-in sports sessions here throughout term time so there really is something for everyone!

HALL STAFF Our hall and the community we have here is maintained by a team of dedicated staff. You will see some of the staff daily but many work behind the scenes to make our hall a pleasant and safe place to live in.

Our on-site staff includes a large team of housekeeping and maintenance, catering, and administration staff. Many of them have worked here at Hulme and Burkhardt or the University for a number of years and are more than happy to pass on their experience of the Hall and University.

RECEPTION: Please visit reception between 9:00 and 17:00 to collect parcels, ask any questions or report any emergencies or problems.

HOUSEKEEPING TEAM: The administrative offices for Housekeeping are located behind the Reception in Hulme Hall.

CATERING TEAM: Please approach the catering team if you have any queries or concerns regarding your dietary requirements or meals.

SECURITY: The Campus Security team are available 24 hours a day, are First Aid trained, and are here to keep you safe. If you see anything or anyone suspicious, or are ever concerned, please call them on 0161 306 9966. The number is also on the back of your student card.

PORTERING AND MAINTENANCE TEAMS: Maintenance staff conduct checks on water, electricity, and fix room faults. Please note that they will only visit during the day and will identify themselves before coming in. If in doubt, call security.

CATERING MEAL TIMES WEEKDAYS (MONDAY - FRIDAY) BREAKFAST: 7:30 - 9:30 DINNER: 17:15 - 19:15

WEEKENDS (SATURDAY & SUNDAY) BRUNCH: 11:30 - 13:00 DINNER: 17:15 - 18:30 Guests, and residents of Burkhardt House can eat in the dining hall for a cost of £4 for breakfast and/or £5 for dinner.

FORMAL DINNERS Our formal dinners, generally held on a monthly basis, are a fantastic and unique experience that few halls at the University still put on.

Dress is formal, with gowns provided

by the Hall on arrival.

Dinner will be a three course meal.

All residents are welcome to attend, with those from Burkhardt House asked to pay £5.

LIFE IN HULME HALL

Study Spaces

Hulme Hall has a variety of places where you can study! In some of the blocks, you’ll find common rooms and the Houldsworth block has its own library/computer cluster up on the 1st floor with desks and plug points for all residents. During the day time, Victoria Park Bar is a great spot, too!

Victoria Park Bar Our very own Victoria Park Bar is the hub of Hulme Hall life. It offers not only a great selection of drinks (including awesome cocktails), but TVs, games consoles, darts, and pool tables. It is open 5pm until midnight every day during term time, and it’s a great place to meet and chat with your fellow residents.

Most of the JCR’s events will take place here in the bar, so make sure you get well acquainted with it.

This year, our jam-packed welcome week will include events such as Bar Wars, Beach Party, Beer Pong, and a Live Music Night, all of which are hosted at the bar.

Chaplaincy

Hulme Hall is lucky to have it's very own chaplaincy team who are here to offer advice, guidance, and support, regardless of your religious background, so look out for posters around reception.

Charity Events We love to raise money for charity here at Hulme Hall, from the local Wood Street Mission to the global Comic Relief. Why not speak to your RLA or the JCR about holding a charity event?

HULME'S CULTURE Hulme has a long tradition of student-led activities and hall group/societies. In the past we have had hall bands, that became regulars at Vickie’s, we’ve had creative writing societies who produced magazines, film clubs, a music appreciation society, halls sports teams, the Hulmanack Chronicle committee and the list goes on.

Traditionally we’ve had students volunteer to get involved with the Christmas play, to raise money for charity.

People get together with the JCR and write a script for a play that can range from a fantastical comedy to a neonoir thriller, and plan and create the show for other residents. All these wonderful events and experiences rely on the involvement and support of the Hulme community, which the JCR and our returners work so hard to support and build each year.

Hulme is truly what you make of it and the more you put into it, the more you get out of it. Now more than ever in Covid times, your hall is your support system and community, so do get involved, do what you love and have the best time ever!

LIVING IN MANCHESTER TRAVEL

Manchester is easy to travel around, and Hulme Hall & Burkhardt House is ideally located for buses since Oxford Road is one of the busiest bus routes in Europe! They’ll take you to the Main Campus of the University, or the centre of town if you need to do some shopping at the Arndale Centre. For these, take the 42, 43, 142, or 143 bus, and for the Trafford Centre, it’s the X50 or 250 you want.

For taxis, the University recommends Street Cars as they run the Safe Taxi Scheme - if you find yourself out of money on a night out, you can simply hand in your student card, and collect it the next working day from Student Services in exchange for the fare.

MUSIC

Manchester is famous for its unique music scene. A home to legendary indie bands such as Joy Division and Oasis, the city has many concert venues which hold the hottest of acts. Alternatively, you can also visit the Bridgewater Hall, the core of Manchester’s classical music landscape. No matter your tastes, you’ll be entertained!

NIGHTLIFE Hulme Hall is right next to the Curry Mile which is perfect for a lovely meal out. The centre of Manchester also boasts lots of elegant restaurants and bars - such as Cottonopolis or Jimmy’s - so there’s something to suit everyone’s taste. If clubs are more your thing, Fifth, Factory, The Venue, 42’s, or Deaf Institute are firm student favourites.

HULME FAQs ‘Where do I collect my post?’

With your room key you will have received a post key which opens one of the boxes in reception. If you’ve had a parcel delivered, reception will send you an e-mail notification with a parcel number.

Come along during opening times and bring your student ID!

‘How do I do my laundry?’

Our laundry rooms are managed by Circuit. You will have to download the Circuit app, top up your account with adequate funds and scan the QR code on the machine you want to use for the money to be automatically deducted and for the machine to work.

‘How do I sign up to a Doctors?’

Visit a local practice such as Surrey Lodge or Robert Darbishire to fill in your forms. Don’t forget some ID and proof of address.

‘There’s something wrong with my room - who should I tell?’

Building maintenance issues can be reported on www.bm.stars.manchester.ac.uk. You can also check the status of your reports there.

‘I don’t feel like I’m settling in - who can I speak to?’

Your ResLife team are here to give you advice on anything - University related or otherwise and can point you in the direction of University services that can help you. Please contact them if you need someone to talk to, even out of hours.
