Hui No‘eau Visual Arts Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit visual arts education organization located in beautiful Upcountry Maui. Since 1934, Hui No‘eau has provided an accessible space for the community to experience and enjoy the visual arts. Throughout the year, the Hui hosts art classes for adults and children, artist lectures, fine art exhibitions, events, tours, and educational outreach programs. Working artist studios are nestled across the grounds and a gallery shop featuring artwork created by Hui members is located in the main house. As a communitybased organization, we thank you for helping us continue our mission of unlocking creativity through exceptional visual arts education and enhancing this endeavor through the preservation of the historic Kaluanui Estate.

When C.W. Dickey designed the historic Kaluanui Estate in 1917 for its original owners, Harry & Ethel Baldwin, he was one of the most celebrated architects of his time. Now, 100 years later, the Kaluanui Estate still stands in its original character as one of Maui’s most iconic legacy estates still open to the public. With the unending generosity of our community, Hui No‘eau has succeeded in preserving Kaluanui so that it may remain accessible for future generations of artists, students, educators, and community members. It has been an honor to celebrate this momentous year with all of you. Thank you for your continued support of the Hui’s mission!
As Kaluanui’s centennial year comes to an end, we welcome you to enjoy another holiday season full of classes, exhibitions, and events! We are offering 90 classes this session, including programs taught by Visiting Artists from Oahu, the Big Island, California, Idaho and New York. We also look forward to continuing to share Hawaiian arts and culture through workshops and demonstrations with Art with Aloha practitioners Lufi Luteru, Pi‘ilani Lua, Lloyd Kumula‘au Sing and May Haunani BalinoSing (pages 9, 12 & 16). We also have an array of “Handmade Holidays” classes (pages 6 & 7) designed to spark joy and creativity during this season of giving. Our popular Camp Kaluanui program (pages 22 & 23) returns again during the fall and winter breaks, giving keiki a chance to paint, draw, build, and play at the beautiful Kaluanui Estate! We are thrilled to partner with East Maui Watershed Partnership for a third year to present Malama Wao Akua 2017 (page 4). This exhibition celebrates the native species of Maui Nui by inviting artists to explore our watersheds and use their creative talents to raise awareness about the importance of protecting these native species. During this holiday season, I encourage you to consider the many ways you can give back to Hui No‘eau and make a difference in the Maui community! The Art of Giving section (page 25) explains all the ways that you can support our growing organization. YOU make it possible for the Hui to continue providing the highest quality visual arts opportunities for youth, adults, artists, residents, and visitors every year. CENTENNIAL FESTIVAL & FAMILY DAY
Here’s a glimpse of what happened as the Hui celebrated 100 years of Kaluanui this July 22, 2017!
It has been a creative 100 years for the Kaluanui Estate! Harry & Ethel Baldwin built the main home and outbuildings of historic Kaluanui in 1917. Designed by prominent architect C.W. Dickey, Kaluanui now welcomes the community as the beautiful home of Hui No‘eau Visual Arts Center! On Saturday, July 22, the community gathered together to celebrate this wonderful place that provides a beautiful and inspiring environment for artists and creative minds of all ages. The Hui celebrated recognition from The Office of Governor David Ige, The Office of Representative Tulsi Gabbard, The Office of Senator Mazie Hirono, and Representatives Lynn DeCoite & Kyle Yamashita, Mayor Alan Arakawa & The Office of Council Chair Mike White.
The community was treated to some stellar performances! Mahalo to Maui Taiko, Halau Wehena o Ke Ao, members of the Kalama Intermediate Ukulele Band, and Miss Bristol! Other activities included property tours by John W. Hoxie, Jr. and Frances “Effie” Cameron Ort, visits with exhibiting artists in the gallery, and a flag parade.
The Hui studios were buzzing with the creative spirit as Hui Teaching Artists and students enjoyed live art demonstrations in the glassblowing, printmaking, ceramics, & jewelry studios. Everyone was welcome to join in the hands-on art making with activities for adults and keiki! Visiting Artist and Art with Aloha practitioner Dalani Tanahy also provided demonstrations in kapa making. The scavenger hunt for the first 100 keiki was a huge hit! Families followed clues and a map to find an art piece at each studio, then put all the parts together to create a miniature car that could actually move!
Everyone enjoyed “Crafts & Drafts” root beer by The Maui Brewing Co., lunch by Habibi, and sweet treats by Ululani’s Hawaiian Shave Ice, and the Catered Coconut. Many local artists also sold their beautiful handmade wares as part of the Hui’s “Art Market!”

Kaluanui Centennial: 10x10 Exhibition Opening Celebration May 26, 2017
Youth Art Exhibition Opening Celebration August 4, 2017
In honor of Kaluanui’s 100th year, the Hui ‘ohana gathered to celebrate 100 works of art created by 100 artists! Jurors Inger Tully and Christy Vail selected a diverse collection of work for this exhibition, which challenged artists to create 2D and 3D works within a defined space of 10”x10”x10”. The uniform size created interesting connections between pieces with styles ranging from realistic to abstract—and media including glass and metal sculpture, oil, watercolor, encaustic, printmaking, fiber art, mixed media, and more. Mahalo to the exhibiting artists and art buyers!
Colors, construction, and creativity—oh my! This unique exhibition showcased the work of 250+ youth of ages 5-15 who participated in nine weeks of the Hui’s summer art youth programs. Young artists, friends, and families enjoyed a special opening celebration that recognized all of the wonderful artistic achievements of our keiki and the extraordinary possibilities unlocked by youth visual arts education in our community. September 15 – November 7 Receiving Day: Wednesday, August 30 Opening Reception: Friday, September 15 / 5:00 – 8:00 pm Jurors: Tamara Sherrill, Executive Director of Maui Nui Botanical Gardens and Michael Takemoto, Maui artist & Assistant Professor at University of Hawai‘i, Maui College Hui No‘eau Visual Arts Center in collaboration with East Maui Watershed Partnership (EMWP) brings you Malama Wao Akua (Caring for the Realm of the Gods)—a juried art exhibition celebrating the native species of Maui Nui (Maui, Lana‘i, Moloka‘i, Kaho‘olawe). We invite Maui artists to explore our watersheds and use their creative talents to raise awareness about the importance of protecting native species. Selected artwork should be successful in sharing knowledge of the watersheds and native species with others in a meaningful way. Artwork will also be selected based upon a number of criteria, including originality of concept, creativity, technique, professionalism, and presentation. Our hope is that Maui artists of all ages will explore our watersheds and express the value that native species have within our daily life. This exhibition is sure to provide powerful visuals that celebrate Maui’s native plant and animal life. A jurying team with expertise in art and conservation will select from among the pool of entries. Works in any medium are welcome!

That’s what you’ll discover in this class as you create a oneof-a-kind pendant! Students will explore silver soldering, how to drill stones, and how to set a cabochon on top of another cabochon. You’ll also learn how to make a “small” bezel for a small custom cabochon. You’ll learn tube setting, various texturing techniques, and finishing. Volcano, Hawai‘i September 16 - 18 Ira Ono is a multi-faceted visual and performing artist who is well known for his fresh and innovative work featuring a wide range of media and subjects. His works are featured in the Hawai‘i State Art Museum and private collections in the United States, Europe and Japan. Ira is the founder/owner of Volcano Garden Arts on the Big Island of Hawai‘i and is the founder of annual “Trash Art” shows on Oahu, Maui, and the Big Island. iraono.com
Japanese Paste Paper Collage Saturday & Sunday, 2 days September 16 & 17 / 9:30 am – 3:30 pm
Japanese paste paper is a surface design technique originating in England over 100 years ago. Using common household ingredients and water-based pigments, a paste is formed and placed on paper and then combed to give lush, threedimensional effects. Ira has created a breakthrough in this medium by using various mixed media items such as personal photos, love letters, stamps, and vintage photography into collages and original paintings. Artistic skills are not required and any mistakes made are easily looked upon as interesting aesthetic alternatives. This two-day workshop will cover all aspects of paste paper techniques. All paper, pigments, and supplies will be provided, so it is easy to join in the fun! The finished paper becomes a valuable source of material for original paintings, bookmaking, collage, greeting cards, wallpaper, furniture, and more! Now, more than ever, making money from your art requires a basic knowledge of business fundamentals. This one-day workshop will include topics such as pricing products for profit, the pros and cons of being your own boss, copyright basics, branding, focusing on galleries/gift shops, fool-proof presentations, internet marketing, and much more. LUFI LUTERU
HRATCH NARGIZIAN
Lufi Luteru is kupa‘aina from Makaha Valley, O‘ahu. She is a diversified entrepreneur and a kanaka maoli weaver and jewelry designer who shares her visual philosophies, education, and ancestral stories through creations of Hawaiian fiber art, custom-made jewelry, and wearable art. Lufi earned her BA and MA at the Kamakakūokalani Center for Hawaiian Studies at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa where she has also taught as a lecturer. Lufi has annually participated in the MAMo Native Hawaiian Art events including the Art Markets and Wearable Arts Fashion Shows since their beginning in 2006. Her work has been exhibited in many galleries and exhibitions and her poetry has been featured in journals and books of Native Hawaiian writing. mkt.com/lufi-a-luteru
Hratch Nargizian is a fifth generation metalsmith born in Armenia. He initially learned the craft from his family. Hratch went on to continue his education at Art and Craft school of Yerevan with the focus on engraving, drawing and rendering. He apprenticed with Master Garobet and Valodia. Under Master Garobet’s tutelage, he furthered his skills to include die cutting and repoussé. He then moved to the United States where he studied with Keith Kramer and Dennis Beirden and adopted new patterns and styles of engraving and carving metals. By using “gravers” or specialized steel push chisels, an engraver cuts a variety of shapes into the surface of a softer metal. Visiting Artist and Master Engraver Hratch Nargizian will guide students in preparing the gravers and learning to make basic cuts that can then be combined into patterns and letters. After a highly successful career in the business world, Steve returned to his early passion for the arts. He attended drawing, painting, anatomy, and portraiture classes in Spokane, Los Angeles, Phoenix and New York and went on frequent art study trips to Italy and France. In 2005, he began his career as a sculptor and discovered an instinctive ability to work in three dimensions. He worked at the local foundry in North Idaho to learn the lost wax casting process. This workshop is all about experimentation! Working with hand tools and using excavational techniques, students will explore processes that parallel those found in the natural world, such as friction, embedding, heating and cooling, enfolding, fracturing, slippage and erosion. With process as our metaphorical touchstone, the class will take a hands-on approach to a number of two and three-dimensional projects intended to lead students to the discovery of curious cause and effect relationships. Pi‘ilani is a descendant of Kahanu who was awarded that land in 1848 by Kamehameha III. Pi‘ilani is a Merrie Monarch Judge and will judge for the third time in a row next year. She is the founder of the Ke ‘Alohi Singles hula competition held at Waimea Valley on Oahu, where she had a halau (Halau O Waimea) from 1980-1992. Pi‘ilani was also 1985 Lei Queen for the Honolulu City and County and has traveled to many places in the world to teach hula.

Making the Darkroom Print — Level 2 Will Spence Tuesdays, 4 weeks September 26 – October 17 5:00 – 9:00 pm
This class is all about the art of making a traditional black and white print using silver gelatin paper. Ansel Adams analogized, “The negative is comparable to the composer’s score and the print to its performance.” Students will learn more than how to make a straight print, but will also explore how to dodge and burn, use contrast filters, and how to evaluate work to make prints even better. Prerequisite: Students should have previous dark room experience and come to class with negatives ready to print. Students will not be developing film in this class. Photography apps offer many diverse and powerful choices. This class will simplify your options and guide you through key variables with step-by-step instruction. Edward will help you understand the full potential of your iPhone camera app with a “live view” projection unit of his screen and simple hands-on examples. This hands-on workshop with PPA Certified Professional Photographer Aubrey Hord covers the basics of how to navigate your camera’s settings and how to get started shooting with the manual setting to create the photographs you envision. Students will learn about ISO, shutter speed, and aperture to create the perfect exposure—along with focus, white balance, lens choice, filters, tripods, and much more. Edward Baldwin Saturday, 1 day November 11 / 9:00 am – 12:30 pm Open to all previous Hui iPhone photography students, this class will get you up to date on enhancements to industry leading photography apps ProCamera, VividHDR & Snapseed. This “refresher” workshop will include a review of key techniques for shooting and processing covered in the original class—plus a whole lot more! Edward will explain how to shoot even larger RAW files for more processing power with the iPhone 7. You’ll also learn how to get all of your new ProCamera settings updated to give you the maximum potential for creating that awesome photo you envision. Learn the basics of nontoxic copper etching with Baldwin Ink Grounds! Students will learn how to create fine line and tone through the methods of hardground and aquatint. Participants will also learn printing from start to finish: how to transfer an image, apply grounds to a plate, how to etch, ink up, and print using the Hui’s various etching presses. In combination with chine collé, a technique of fusing a thin Japanese paper to the thicker printing paper as you print, your final works of art will transform with additional detail and elegance! Polyester Plate Lithography — Level 1 Tania Arens Saturday & Sunday, 2 days December 16 & 17 / 10:00 am – 4:00 pm This popular nontoxic approach to lithography is easy to learn, fun, and rewarding! You may reproduce the full spectrum of lithographic marks, including brushstrokes, ink-washes, texture, crayon marks, and pencil lines. Students may also experiment with digital imaging using a copy machine. Creating an image on the plate is easy and safe and printing is based on the resistance between oil and water as in traditional lithography. Introduction to Metal Clay — Level 1 Roberta Ann Weisenburg Tuesdays, 4 weeks October 3 – 24 / 6:00 – 9:00 pm Metal Clay is a unique type of clay made up of microscopic particles of real metal, water, and a binder. The clay can be shaped with tools or even using just your hands! After creating your piece in clay, you’ll fire it and the water and binder will burn away, leaving you with a piece of real silver or copper metal. This more in-depth introductory class allows students to learn the basics by using copper clay, which is a more economical material. Students will also have the opportunity to purchase their own silver metal clay. Participants will learn how to properly handle and store clay, how to roll out and texturize it using rubber stamps or found objects, and how to construct flat and dimensional pieces. Bring the whole family to the Hui for a fun & creative Friday night! “Family Friday” workshops are designed to encourage children along with an adult guardian to create artwork together. This is a hands-on experience for everyone! We’ll order pizza and there will be laughter, smiles, and fun for all! PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED! Register for one— or as many as you like! Note: If your family doesn’t wish to eat pizza, you are welcome to bring something else for you and your keiki. While working on individual projects, students will practice the foundational elements of metalsmithing that all jewelry professionals know: cutting, drilling, piercing, and soldering metal. Projects include pendants, bracelets, earrings, rings, and small sculpture. Teens will be amazed by their handmade jewelry and metal creations! Before participating in a guided open studio session, students must take a two-hour “Studio Introduction” class. This short class is offered on the first Wednesday of every month from 3-5 pm. Annual Giving — Your donations make a difference! Match Challenge Opportunity The Kaluanui Estate turned 100 this year and with thanks to you, we have so much to celebrate! Last year, your generosity made a powerful impact on the community by providing exceptional visual arts education and arts opportunities for:
30,000 people, including artists, youth, educators, residents, and visitors from around the world
950 adults and 900 children participating in programs in the Hui’s state-of-the-art studios

730 students in grades K – 12 and 475 preschoolers through the Hui’s Explore & Discover field trip program

A big-hearted supporter of the Hui has made a very generous pledge to match up to $100,000 each year over 5 years in support of Hui No‘eau’s future Bud Schaefer Woodworking & Innovation Center and the Gage Schubert Building. Bud Schaefer Woodworking/Innovation Center: • Develop STEAM programming & classes in wood design and fabrication • Teach use of hand tools and operation of machine tools • Provide courses in three-dimensional design using innovative computer-directed tools • Create musical instruments, furniture, and other usable wood products • Utilize power building & machinery with sustainable green energy Gage Schubert Building: • Multi-purpose room • Upstairs classroom for painting, drawing, and design • Power building & machinery with sustainable green energy • New ceramics wheel room, glazing and glaze mixing room, kiln room, and pottery storage room • Main gallery pedestal and wall storage With this gift, it is the donor’s intent to encourage and motivate others to give financially at a level that is meaningful to them and their families. Give a Gift Beyond Your Years
Hui No‘eau is honored to be one of 100 nonprofits selected by Hawai‘i Community Foundation as a partner in their Legacy Giving Campaign. The campaign is a statewide effort to enhance awareness of legacy giving. What is your passion? If the Hui’s educational offerings and/or efforts in historic preservation reflect your values, please consider setting aside a gift in your will or trust. In addition to supporting our work through your generous cash donations, here are just a few ways you can contribute to the sustainability of Hui No‘eau for future generations. We encourage you to consult with your financial advisor to discuss the tax implications of these options: Bequests One of the easiest ways to help involves simply naming Hui No‘eau as a beneficiary in your will and living trust. A bequest may be for a particular dollar amount or percentage of your estate. Estate tax savings may be significant. Life Insurance Policy and Retirement Assets Often overlooked by donors, naming Hui No‘eau as a partial or full beneficiary of these assets can provide support for the organization. EARLY REGISTRATION DISCOUNT!
Register for any Fall 2017 session class by September 20 to receive 10% off class tuition! Please mention or apply promo code FALL17CL (classes), FALL17WS (workshops), or FALL17CP (camps) in order to receive the discounted price. Limit: Some classes do not qualify. This discount cannot be combined with other offers and cannot be used retroactively. Note: Pre-registration is required for all Hui classes. Full payment is required at the time of registration. To ensure enrollment in a class, we recommend registering at least one week prior to the start date of class. We require seven days notice to issue a refund or class credit less a $25 processing fee. Memberships are non-refundable. If the person registering has a disability and needs accommodation to be able to fully participate in a class, the Hui should be alerted at the time of registration (at least one week in advance of class start date) to discuss any accommodations needed.
