Hui No‘eau Visual Arts Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit visual arts education organization located in beautiful Upcountry Maui. Since 1934, Hui No‘eau has provided an accessible space for the community to experience and enjoy the visual arts. Throughout the year, the Hui hosts art classes for adults and children, artist lectures, fine art exhibitions, events, tours, and educational outreach programs. Working artist studios are nestled across the grounds and a gallery shop featuring artwork created by Hui members is located in the main house. As a community-based organization, we thank you for helping us continue our mission of unlocking creativity through exceptional visual arts education and enhancing this endeavor through the preservation of the historic Kaluanui Estate.

It’s summer time and creativity is shining as bright as the sun at Hui No‘eau! In 2016, we will welcome over 250 Maui youth to participate in Summer Camp Kaluanui (page 25). Each week’s camp theme is designed to inspire creative exploration. This year, the Hui and our talented Teaching Artists are joining a national movement and will be including STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) lessons in our camp curriculum. Our summer culminates with a celebration of our young artists on Family Day and with the Youth Art Exhibition (page 3). We can’t wait to see all of colorful and creative work made by Hui keiki! Maui’s young artists will not be the only ones smiling under the sun as they unlock their creativity at the historic Kaluanui Estate! This issue of Create features nearly 100 art classes and workshops for all ages, including 18 classes taught by 11 visiting artists—a program that gained vital support and momentum at this year’s Art Affair 2016 thanks to many generous supporters. We look forward to welcoming Visiting Artists Gordon ‘Umialiloalahanauokalakaua Kai & Janice Leinaala Noweo Kai to host a special demonstration and workshop as they share their knowledge of creating tools, weapons, and lauhala weaving as part of the Hui’s “Art with Aloha” Program.
We are so grateful to have the opportunity to serve such a wonderful community on Maui through our many visual arts programs. I am excited to announce that the Hui was recently recognized for our efforts at the County of Maui Mayor’s Small Business Awards. The Hui was awarded “Outstanding Nonprofit” for 2016 (page 7). We are so thrilled! We thank all of you for making it possible for us to continue to provide exceptional visual arts education at the Hui.

Let your imagination set sail and discover new realms of artistry! With an open call to artists working in any medium, the Hui’s annual themed exhibition adopts an adventurous spirit in 2016 as we explore the concept of “Voyaging”—going on a long journey in the spirit of exploration. We encourage artists to think broadly about what it means to move through space, transition, wander, and pass from one place to the next. Grounded in a rich tradition in Hawai‘i, this theme will take on a new meaning through artists’ interpretations—inviting cultural, personal, and visual discoveries.
Hui No‘eau Visual Arts Center is thrilled to collaborate with East Maui Watershed Partnership to raise awareness about the native species of Maui Nui (Maui, Lana‘i, Molokai, Kaho‘olawe). By offering educational opportunities in coordination with the exhibition, including artist hikes and “Talk Story” sessions with environmental experts, our hope is that Maui artists of all ages will explore our watersheds and express the value these species have within our daily life. Artwork must depict only species native to Maui Nui, a landscape showcasing only native Maui Nui species, or people working to protect Maui’s native species and native habitats. With four entry divisions (open to elementary, middle & high school, and adults), this exhibition is sure to provide powerful visuals that celebrate Maui’s native plant and animal life. August 6 - 21 Opening Reception & Family Day Celebration: Saturday, August 6 / 10:00 am – 2:00 pm Featuring art by 250+ Maui youth annually, this exhibition showcases the work of young artists participating in the Hui’s summer art camps. The exhibition kicks off with a Family Day celebration that is free and open to the public. Sharing their talent and creativity, the Hui’s young artists show all of us the extraordinary possibilities unlocked by visual arts education. Annual Juried Exhibition 2016 January 8 - February 18
One of the most prestigious art exhibitions on Maui with an open call to artists, the Hui No‘eau Annual Juried Exhibition featured 55 pieces selected by Juror Marcia Morse from an incredible pool of 310 entries! The Hui sends our congratulations to all exhibiting artists and especially to award winners Zach Pezzillo (Juror’s Choice) and Christy Vail (Honorable Mention)! We are also proud to celebrate the four artists whose work was recognized by the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts: Jody Arthur, Zach Pezzillo, Jefferson Stillwell, and Christine Waara. Solo Artist Exhibition 2016: Melissa Chimera & Gabrielle Anderman March 11 – April 29
The Solo Artist Exhibition is one of the only exhibitions in the state that provides the unique opportunity for artists to be personally involved in all facets of their exhibition and it challenges artists to envision and produce an innovative and cohesive new body of work. The Hui’s gallery is divided to accommodate two simultaneous exhibitions, cultivating an energetic conversation between both artists and spaces. On March 11, the Hui unveiled the exciting work of the two exceptional Solo Artists chosen for 2016. This year, Melissa Chimera presents “Agents of Change”—a series of mixed media works on linen about extinction, globalization, and our role as humans in these processes. Gabrielle Anderman presents “Being Here,” which explores her relationship to the present and the ways in which her mind keeps her distracted. The Hui celebrated our 9th annual Hui No‘eau Wailea Food & Wine Celebration in the beautiful Anuhea Ballroom at Hotel Wailea. Art Affair — February 27, 2016 Andy Warhol: Celebrate Your 15 Minutes of Fame at the Hui Art Affair 2016 was a party to remember! The Hui community celebrated with the spirit of Andy Warhol as we joined together to enjoy an evening in support of Hui No‘eau and the visual arts. Art Affair 2016 featured American-inspired dishes by Bev Gannon’s Celebrations Catering, a premium open bar with a special Pau Maui Vodka Luge and signature cocktails, live and silent auctions, and dancing and live music by Gretchen Rhodes and The House Shakers. Three special guests in attendance were recognized for their generosity, dedication, and steadfast support of the Hui: Jack Gray & Carolyn Schaefer Gray were presented with this year’s Board of Director’s Recognition Award and Tony Walholm, a Hui Teaching Artist, was honored with the Hui Angel Award. The Hui community then “raised their paddles” for the Hui’s Visiting Artist Program! Beyond a fabulous evening of music, food, arts, and culture, Art Affair is a powerful demonstration of community coming together for a common cause. The Hui’s continued ability to offer meaningful opportunities in the visual arts is made possible by the support of our generous donors. We extend our deepest gratitude to our Art Affair Committee members Tim Garcia, Judy Bisgard, and Mercy Palmer. “Outstanding Nonprofit” Award presented to Hui No‘eau
We are thrilled to announce that Hui No‘eau was awarded the Mayor’s Small Business Award for “Outstanding Nonprofit” in 2016! The County of Maui Office of Economic Development Board and the Maui Chamber of Commerce presented the award at a ceremony held at the King Kamehameha Golf Club on March 1. The Hui was honored and humbled to be recognized alongside so many outstanding nonprofits and businesses in our community. We were especially excited to share this award with friends of the Hui who were also present, including celebrated Maui artist and Hui Teaching Artist Michael Clements. Michael created an original oil painting to be presented to HC&S in honor of their award for Small Business Support throughout the company’s 145-year history. The Hui works diligently to provide opportunities in visual arts education to all ages and abilities in our community. We thank all of you for allowing us to continue to thrive in our mission of unlocking creativity through exceptional visual arts education and enhancing this endeavor through the preservation of the historic Kaluanui Estate. Remembering Mary “Maizie” Cameron Sanford

In February, the Hui and the Maui community lost a dear friend, patron, and member of the Hui's founding family. Mary "Maizie" Cameron Sanford was a bright light in our community with an immense love for Kaluanui and Hui No‘eau. When she visited the Hui, Maizie's enthusiasm and appreciation for her family's historic home could be felt by all in her presence. Her generous and continued support for the Hui has been vital to our organization; she helped the Hui to purchase the property in 2005 and has consistently supported renovations to various Hui buildings. Maizie also generously contributed to the creation of the Hui's "stickwork" sculpture by Artist in Residence Patrick Dougherty in 2011. Most recently, Maizie supported improvements to the Hui's printmaking studio, which visitors will notice is now looking especially beautiful as a result! All of us at the Hui will remember Maizie with great fondness and will continue to care for Kaluanui and Hui No‘eau with the loving spirit that Maizie shared with all of us. hui spotlight Ian Walsh’s Menehune Mayhem — April 2, 2016 Hui No‘eau is excited to merge the worlds of art and surfing in 2016 via a new partnership with Ian Walsh’s Menehune Mayhem! With a common mission of providing education opportunities that unlock the creativity of Maui youth, the Hui is thrilled to provide the annual surfing event with an official “non-profit” status in 2016. Ian Walsh’s Menehune Mayhem is a free annual community event held at Ho‘okipa Beach Park that promotes surfing, sportsmanship, creativity, and scholarship for over 400 Maui youth. Creativity and the arts play a very important role in the contest, which Maui born and raised professional surfer Ian Walsh shares were largely inspired by his mother Kitty Walsh, a long time Hui ceramicist and elementary school art teacher. “My mom has been an art teacher since I was little. She has shown me the importance of bridging the worlds of surfing and creativity,” Ian said. “Art, like surfing, is another way for kids to express themselves. It gives kids the tools to ignite their own creativity in any way that makes sense to them.” Ian sees waves as his “open canvas” and hopes to inspire Maui’s next generation to unlock their own creative, athletic, and academic talents at this annual community event—and for years to come. Artist in Residence: James Bailey — September & October 2016 This fall, Hui No‘eau will embark on a printmaking adventure of epic proportions! We are thrilled to bring Artist in Residence James Bailey to Maui to work in the Hui’s print studio, teach a workshop open to all levels, and coordinate our “Big Ink” Celebration! James Bailey is a Professor in the School of Art at the University of Montana where he also leads students in an annual printmaking event where large-scale prints are created using an unlikely and unique printing press: a steamroller! While on Maui, James will create a 4’ x 8’ print of his own and facilitate a community steamroller printmaking event right here at the Hui!

On Saturday, October 1, the Hui’s 2016 Artist in Residence Program will culminate with a “Big Ink” celebration! James will guide teams of volunteers as they assist him in the printing process by inking woodblocks that have been carved by local artists, Hui students, and youth from local schools in the weeks leading up to the event. Everyone will be invited to gather and watch the magic unfold as James prints the woodcuts on cloth or paper by driving over them with a steamroller. Barbara Elam is an independent artist currently working in mixed media, drawing, and printmaking. Barbara earned her MFA from East Texas State University and has participated in hundreds of national and international exhibitions. Her work can be found in museum and university collections, including the Fogg Museum at Harvard, the Milwaukee Museum of Art, the Indianapolis Museum of Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago. Barbara was awarded a Bunting Fellowship from the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University in 1990. Afterward, Barbara became a Professor of Art at DePauw University and then retired from Rockford University as Professor Emeritus in 2005. barbaraelam.net

Born in China in 1950, Tom Z.G. Tong began his studies in both oil and ink painting at Hebei University. He completed his Master of Fine Arts Degree at China National Academy of Art in Hang Zhou, where he continued on as professor of painting. During his eleven years of teaching, Tom produced a large body of work and participated in national and international exhibitions. Tom was then invited to the University of California, Berkeley as a visiting scholar at the Institute of East Asian Studies. His paintings have been exhibited at various museums and galleries in the U.S., Canada, China, Germany, Japan, Africa, and are collected by the China National Art Committee, China Ministry of National Cultural Affairs, and other international institutions. A graduate of the San Francisco Academy of Art University, Rose Adare earned a full scholarship from the Temescal Atelier for Classical Realism where she trained under the esteemed living master David Hardy. During her time at the academy, Rose’s work was featured at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor for a Toulouse Lautrec retrospective. Struck by a municipal train in 2005, Rose spent the following years in physical rehabilitation and retaught her self how to paint. Have you ever wanted to give printmaking a try? This is your chance! In this beginner’s class, students will learn the fundamental techniques of relief printmaking. Students will use both carving and non-carving forms of relief printmaking, utilizing many different traditional and non-traditional materials and tools. This class will primarily use wood blocks. Proper inking, printing, and press setup will be thoroughly covered. The instructor will provide technical assistance and conceptual feedback during studio work time. Camp Kaluanui: Young Adults (Ages 11+) #1418 Stop Frame Animation & Silkscreen Art Intensive Tuesday – Friday, 4 days July 5 – 8 / 9:00 am – 4:00 pm
Young artists will love this introduction to the land of mixed media digital arts. In this workshop, students will collaborate to create a story and then produce a short animation inspired by that story. Students become completely engaged in their projects while learning the basics of character development, set building, story boarding, animation, audio and video editing software. Students will also have the opportunity to explore the basics of silkscreen printing during this creative Camp Kaluanui intensive! Tuition: $200 ($250 nonmember) + Supply Fee: $24

We are thrilled to bring you this class series designed just for families! “Family Friday” workshops are meant for children ages 3 - 12 accompanied by an adult guardian. In this class, each student will paint and decorate their own terracotta pot and plant a beautiful succulent or houseplant to take home. EARLY REGISTRATION DISCOUNT!
Register for any Summer 2016 session class by May 1 and receive 10% off class tuition!
Note: Pre-registration is required for all Hui classes. Full payment is required at the time of registration. To ensure enrollment in a class, we recommend registering at least one week prior to the start date of class. We require seven days notice to issue a refund or class credit less a $25 processing fee. Memberships are non-refundable. If the person registering has a disability and needs accommodation to be able to fully participate in a class, the Hui should be alerted at the time of registration (at least one week in advance of class start date) to discuss any accommodations needed.
