Letter from the Director As the weather turns colder, things are heating up at the Hui! For many years, the Hui has dreamed of adding a glassblowing program to our class offerings and this dream has finally come true! We are very proud to present our community with the opportunity to learn this exciting artistic medium and thrilled that the Hui will be the first teaching facility in Hawai‘i offering glassblowing classes to the public. On behalf of everyone at the Hui, I want to thank our generous donors and teachers for making this program possible. This issue of Create features our new glassblowing classes (page 8) as well as many other exciting opportunities to your unlock creativity and get involved with the Hui community, including a variety of events and exhibitions. We are greatly looking forward to Mixed Plate: A Themed Exhibition (page 2) that runs October 4 – November 14 and the Hui’s 8th Annual Wailea Food & Wine Celebration (page 4) on November 14. Hosted in the elegant Anuhea Room at Hotel Wailea, this culinary event features a silent auction and generous tastes by the island’s top chefs and vintners. The Hui is also getting ready for our holiday showcase—Hui Holidays (page 4). Starting November 24, the gallery and gallery shop will be filled with unique gift items, which are completely unique and handmade by local artists. Many of the gifts you’ll find were created right at the Hui in our Open Studios program. Doing your holiday shopping at the Hui is a great way to give back and support artists, the Hui, and creativity on Maui! Mahalo to all who support Hui No‘eau Visual Arts Center. Hui Spotlight New Glassblowing Studio at Hui No‘eau!

The Hui’s new glassblowing department will blow you away with a wealth of knowledge and a lot of fun! Whether you have a few minutes, hours, or weeks, the Hui has an experience for you! We invite you to stop by the new studio, located next to the jewelry and ceramics studios, to watch glass artist Evan Schauss create some truly incredible pieces (visit huinoeau.com/glass for demo times). For those who wish to have a magical first-hand glassblowing experience, glass artist Stephen Fellerman will teach Discover Glassblowing (a three-hour workshop) and Beginning Glassblowing (a four-week class). You may read more about these exciting new classes on page 8. We recently sat down with Evan and Stephen to learn a little bit more about their backgrounds and the art of working in hot glass. With over fifty years of combined experience, the Hui’s glassblowing department is in great hands!

Evan Schauss, Stephen Fellerman

Can you tell us a little bit about yourselves and how you got started in glass?

Stephen: After graduating from Pratt Institute in New York City where I was studying ceramics, I took a VW bus to Sausalito, California and walked into a hippie arts center where there was a little glass shop. I spent about a year there learning to blow glass and when it closed down, I went back East and built one of the first glass shops in Kent, Connecticut in 1973. The following year was the American Craft Council’s first show, which I was in. It grew and grew and now, 40 years later, there are over 300 glassblowers in that show. What propelled my career was the interest in American handcraft. I’ve exhibited and sold my glass all over the country. I’m in the White House Collection, the Corning Museum of Glass, the Chrysler Museum permanent collection…. If you work really hard, things happen. Evan: I started learning to blow glass at Hilltop Artists in Tacoma, Washington. I was in 7th grade and I was in an after school outreach program for intercity kids. I started working professionally when I was 17 at the Glasshouse in Seattle, Washington. I also had the opportunity to travel around Europe and study traditional glassblowing techniques in Italy, Czech Republic, Iceland and Hungary. Before moving to Maui and opening a shop in Haiku, I had my own private glass studio in Tacoma and later opened up shops in West Seattle and then Downtown Seattle. How does glass making work anyway?

With aloha,

Stephen: I’ll give you a Chihuly quote: “The magic isn’t in the glass, it’s in the breath.” Another way to look at it is, glass blowing is a handcraft that’s like throwing darts on a boat. Evan: It’s a balance of using heat, technique, and centrifugal force to create your vision.

What are your favorite glass processes?

Stephen: I like traditional glass blowing as well as sculpting whimsical creations. Early in my career, I was influenced by turn of the century Art Nouveau, but have branched out into some proprietary artwork and technique. Evan: I love sculpting—both abstract and realistic works and I like to combine them on the same piece. Stephen, why do you teach? What can students expect from your glassblowing class?

Stephen: Teaching is a way to fulfill my desire to stay connected to people whose passion is art and to give back my forty years of knowledge. My class will be about getting in front of the furnace, about hands-on experience, and having fun.

2014 Solo Artist Exhibition: Jodi Endicott & Shane Robinson

August 16 - September 18 This exhibition challenges artists to exhibit a new body of work and provides the unique opportunity for artists to be personally involved in all facets of the exhibition planning and installation. The Hui gallery is divided to accommodate two simultaneous solo exhibitions. This year, we are thrilled to showcase work by Jodi Endicott of Oahu and Shane Robinson of Maui. Endicott presents “The Market,” which explores the stock market as a metaphor for the ups and downs of the human experience and the search for balance. Robinson presents “Iterations,” which uses the universal language of mathematics as a familiar foundation from which the viewer can connect with pieces of a more conceptual and minimal nature. From food, language, humor, music, beliefs, and traditions, our cultural mix creates a lifestyle that is truly unique. Artists are encouraged to investigate the relationships within and among Hawai‘i’s ethnic groups and how they combine to create a diverse cultural heritage. This exhibition gives locals and tourists alike the opportunity to reflect upon what distinguishes Hawai‘i from any other place in the world. Annual Juried Exhibition 2015

January 10 – February 19 Receiving Day: Monday, December 29 / 9:00 am – 4:00 pm Opening Reception: Friday, January 9 / 5:00 – 7:00 pm This prestigious competition offers an opportunity for visitors to view current work of local & mainland artists in all media, including ceramics, printmaking, sculpture, photography, jewelry, digital imagery, fiber, painting, and wood. Guest jurors include respected curators and artists from Maui, Hawai‘i and beyond, offering a different perspective for a unique show every year.

Celebrated Events Paniolo Country: A Themed Exhibition — Opening Reception Friday, May 23

Maui’s arts community saddled up and headed on over to the Hui to celebrate the opening of Paniolo Country: A Themed Exhibition. Jurors Judy Bisgard, Kristina Lyons Lambert, and Inger Severson Tully selected 56 works of art that celebrated the historical and contemporary role of Hawai‘i’s cowboys or paniolo. This exhibition offered an opportunity for 47 artists working in all media to explore and capture the essence of Hawai‘i’s ranching industry. On opening night, artists, friends, and family were treated to entertaining demos including roping by Peter Baldwin, rope braiding by Gretchen Cardoso, and a whip/card trick by Tamalyn Baldwin. The Hui was filled with love and aloha as we gathered to honor the traditions, environments, and lifestyles of the paniolo. The Hui sends our warmest mahalo to our jurors and wonderful exhibition sponsors, Haleakala Ranch, Kaonoulu Ranch, Kaupo Ranch, Piiholo Ranch & Ulupalakua Ranch. Visiting Artists Rose Adare

Charles Cohan

Rose Adare is a graduate of the San Francisco Academy of Art. During her time at the academy, Adare’s work was featured at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor for a Toulouse-Lautrec retrospective. Adare began her fine art career at the Muse Studio, founding the annual Muse Showcase: A Celebration in Art and Music in Berkeley, CA. Expanding throughout the Bay Area, Adare took on two solo shows, the first at the Sutter Gallery in San Francisco followed by another at Epic Arts in Berkeley. Struck by a municipal train in 2005, Adare spent the following years in physical rehabilitation and retaught herself how to paint. Returning to the art scene in 2009, Adare’s work was selected for the Schaefer Portrait Challenge in 2012 and won second place at the Wyland Galleries’ “Best of the West” in 2013. Adare’s portrait series “Restraint & Revolution” was recently featured as part of a three woman solo show at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center. roseadare.com

Charles Cohan received his MFA in printmaking from the Cranbrook Academy of Art. He has taught workshops at the Rochester Institute of Technology, Pilchuck Glass School, Anderson Ranch Art Center, Pyramid Atlantic, Whanganui Polytechnic in New Zealand, Canberra Glassworks/Megalo Printmakers and the University of South Australia. He has received research grants from the U.S. Department of State, the Helpmann Foundation, and the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts. Students will explore the fundamentals of figure painting over three, highly informative days. Barbara Elam Dallas, Texas November 3-12 Collagraphic Printmaking Processes #826 Friday, Saturday & Sunday, 3 days October 10 – 12 / 10:00 am – 4:00 pm

Inexpensive and readily available materials, sustainable and re-purposed supplies, and the ability to make prints at a larger scale all inspire new discoveries of the printed matrix. In this workshop, students will explore a combination of mainstream and alternative mark making tools and techniques. The class will examine both constructive and reductive processes in the development of the printing matrix while utilizing a topographic approach mirrored by the ability to print in both relief and intaglio methods. Students will use non-traditional tools for the inscription of marks upon MDF and plywood and will practice carving, hammering, grinding, stamping, sanding, burning, collaging, and varnishing. Students will develop surface textures on printing plates using a multitude of materials and tools. Inking processes and press setup will be thoroughly covered. Daily demonstrations, technical assistance and conceptual feedback from the instructor will be paired with work time for an incredible three-day printmaking experience! Barbara Elam is a Professor Emeritus of Art at Rockford College and DePauw University. In 1989, she received the honor of Bunting Institute Fellow of Radcliffe College at Harvard University where she was an artist in residence. Her work has been included in over 250 national and a few international exhibits. Her pieces are included in museum and university collections, including The Fogg Museum of Harvard, Milwaukee Museum of Art, Indianapolis Museum of Art, and Art Institute of Chicago. Elam received her BFA from the University of Texas at Dallas and her MFA from East Texas State University, along with advanced studies in printmaking at the University of Dallas at Irving. barbaraelam.com

Non-Toxic, Multilayered Color Monotypes #827 Mondays – Wednesdays, 2 weeks (6 days) November 3 – 5 and 10 – 12 / 10:00 am – 1:00 pm

Students will learn valuable printmaking techniques that can by done by novices to pros! After demonstrating her techniques, Barbara will guide students through the creation of several color monotypes using simple non-toxic materials. Each student will make simple drawings or designs to use as a matrix under a Plexiglas plate. Students will learn the magic of using color in layers to create any color needed from just the three primary colors. This class is a great lesson in color theory! Luana Coonen

Born and raised in Colorado, Adam Field earned his BA in Art from Fort Lewis College. For two years, he immersed himself in the culturally rich art scene of the San Francisco Bay Area where he began his full time studio practice. From there, he relocated to Maui, where he established a thriving studio business. He spent most of 2008 in Icheon, South Korea, studying traditional Korean pottery making techniques under 6th generation Onggi master Kim Il Mahn. In 2013, he created and debuted HIDE-N-SEEKAH at the NCECA conference in Houston, TX. After maintaining his studio in Durango, CO for five years, Field recently moved to Helena, MT where he is currently a long-term artist in residence at The Archie Bray Foundation. His works are included in private collections and kitchen cabinets internationally.

The Hui is proud to welcome Luana Coonen back to the Hui! Born on Maui, she was one of our core jewelry Teaching Artists from 2010-2013 and now lives in San Francisco, CA. Coonen is known for her art jewelry inspired by natural materials and created with precious metals and plastics. She holds a BFA in Jewelry/Metal Arts from California College of the Arts and has traveled and created jewelry around the world. She enjoys teaching, exhibiting art jewelry, and running a small jewelry business out of downtown San Francisco. Her work can be found in galleries across the nation. luanacoonen.com

Nature Inspiration: Cultivating Inspirations in Clay #828 Saturday & Sunday, 2 days December 13 & 14 10:00 am – 4:00 pm

In this two-day demonstration-based workshop, Adam Field will demonstrate his methods for carving intricate patterns on a variety of wheel-thrown porcelain forms. He will demonstrate traditional Korean Onggi coil and paddle pottery techniques. From traditional techniques to innovative solutions for timeless problems, participants will develop a new perspective on creating and decorating functional pottery. Participants will learn new skills for mapping out and carving geometric patterns and will have a hands-on opportunity to try out Field’s techniques and tools for themselves. Generous discussions about studio practice, aesthetics, materials, ceramic history, and promotion and marketing strategies for the studio potter are certain to encourage individual discovery, growth, and development of fresh ideas. Cuff bracelets are the perfect project to learn how to make an easy wearable piece of jewelry from scratch—and they make great handmade gifts! Students will learn how to saw, texture, form, finish, and patina cuff bracelets in this fun class. Students are encouraged to bring design ideas to class and be ready to work. Cuffs will be made out of brass and copper to encourage experimentation; students are welcome to bring silver or purchase some in the studio if desired. Soldering will not be taught in this class. Join us for a fun, creative, and therapeutic art session! This activity is designed to allow authentic creative expression. Absolutely no artistic experience is required, although spontaneous painting is a great way to help generate a feeling of freedom in those students with more artistic background. Students will learn to use the more advanced tools found in the Hui’s studio, improve soldering skills, and refine designs for faster and more successful fabrication. The class may also explore riveting methods, how to imprint surface textures with the rolling mill, and how to create dimension with dapping tools, smithing stakes, and special mandrels. Many other techniques will be learned as students troubleshoot designs and work on individual projects. Metalforming — Level 2 #881 J.B. Students will gain a solid understanding of basic processes and learn more advanced types of metal forming, including hammering wire and sheet into curvilinear 3-D forms. Found Object Jewelry — Level 1+ #882 Roberta Ann Weisenburg Sunday, 1 day November 23 / 10:00 am – 2:00 pm Come and create a unique wearable piece of jewelry in just 4 hours! This class will introduce students to the basic jewelry techniques of wire wrapping, stamping, and drilling. Come make magic in the darkroom! Have you ever wanted to experience “oldschool” photography? Our photo club instructors will teach you camera function, film processing, and printing. Discover the Hui’s Kaluanui Estate! Tour the Hui Gardens! Guided & Self-Guided Walking Tour: We invite you to explore the Hui’s beautiful Kaluanui Estate! You are welcome to create your own route or if you’d rather reserve a guide ($12/person with advance reservations), we are happy to oblige! About an hour in duration, this walking tour features two of Maui’s largest Norfolk Island Pines, endemic and indigenous plants, and the remains of one of Maui’s earliest sugar mills. It also explains some of the features our nearly 100-year-old historical home. Experience a Maui-Inspired Mural: In 2012, Philadelphia-based artist Shira Walinsky created a stunning two-sided mural based on community input in answer to the question, “What makes Maui, Maui?” What Maui references can you spot in her colorful creation? Browse the gift shop: You’ll feel like you’ve discovered your very own treasure trove of handmade items and fine art when you shop at the Gallery Shop at Kaluanui.
