letter from the director

I welcome everyone to join me in celebration of Kaluanui’s centennial year! I am honored to stand beside each of you to commemorate not only 100 years of the Hui’s inspiring and breathtaking Kaluanui Estate, but also 100 years of community and creativity. When we joined together to save Kaluanui from sale to a private owner in 2005, we sent a strong message to Maui, Hawai‘i, and the world that this historic estate would remain available to the public for our keiki, our keiki’s keiki, and well into the future. Today, this deep passion for the arts and appreciation for Kaluanui’s history is what continues to drive our community of artists and supporters to create a bright future for Kaluanui and Hui No‘eau. In this Winter & Spring 2017 session, we are thrilled to offer nearly 100 classes and workshops that engage all ages, starting with our keiki as young as 2.5 years old and moving all the way up through our kupuna. I encourage you to explore your favorite art medium or try something new in this New Year!

We also look forward to an exciting exhibition season in 2017, including the Hui No‘eau Annual Juried Exhibition. This year’s juror, Duncan Dempster from Honolulu Printmakers, will take on the challenging and rewarding task of selecting works submitted by some of Maui’s most celebrated artists. We can’t wait to see what the community has in store! Following this exhibition and as part of the Hui’s centennial year of celebrations, we are honored to feature the work of artist and Hui angel Judy Bisgard in this year’s Retrospective Exhibition. The Hui’s Retrospective Series was designed to acknowledge the contributions of individuals who have made a profound influence on local art and to share their work and ideas with the community. Who better to exemplify this message than Judy? I am so grateful to all of our members and supporters for helping us in our mission of unlocking creativity through exceptional visual arts education and enhancing this endeavor through the preservation of the historic Kaluanui Estate. We are excited to celebrate 100 years of Kaluanui with a number of centennial themed events throughout the year, including the kick off at this year’s Art Affair on February 25th (Page 6)! Stay up to date on all centennial celebration events throughout the year by keeping an eye out for the Hui’s signature centennial logo! With aloha,

centennial celebration!

When C.W. Dickey designed the historic Kaluanui Estate in 1917 for its original owners Harry & Ethel Baldwin, he was one of the most celebrated architects of his time. Now, 100 years later, the Kaluanui Estate still stands in its originals character as one of Maui’s most iconic legacy estates still open to the public. With the unending generosity of our community, Hui No‘eau Visual Arts Center has succeeded in preserving Kaluanui so that it will remain accessible for future generations of artists, students, educators, and community members for years to come. We thank each and every one of you for your continued support and invite you to share our excitement in celebrating the Kaluanui Estate now and for another 100 years! Please join Hui No‘eau as we celebrate 100 years of Kaluanui in 2017! We invite the entire community to join us for one or all of these exciting centennial celebration events! Stay up to date by visiting huinoeau.com or the Hui’s Facebook page at facebook.com/hui.noeau or follow us on Instagram @huinoeau!

2016 artist in residence & big ink!

On Saturday, October 8, local artists, teachers, students of all ages, and public art enthusiasts gathered together to celebrate BIG INK—a large-scale, outdoor printmaking extravaganza and the culmination of the 2016 Hui No‘eau Artist in Residence Program! This year’s residency program invited the community to think big and create carvings up to 4’ x 8’ in size to be printed with a drum roller typically used on construction sites. Professor James Bailey of the University of Montana visited Hui No‘eau for nearly three weeks, during which time he worked in the Hui’s printmaking studio to carve his own 4’ x 8’ block inspired by his first experience in the Hawaiian Islands. James also taught a workshop, leading a team of extremely dedicated students in carving their own large-scale blocks. Leading up to BIG INK, the Hui hosted 72 Maui High School students who visited Kaluanui for a field trip and worked together to create their own collaborative work of art. The Hui also welcomed classroom participation from students at Maui High, Baldwin High, Seabury Hall, Pa‘ia Youth and Cultural Center, and Kihei Charter School—and in some cases, the Hui provided materials, tools, and support from our Teaching Artists to help get the job done! Hui Teaching Artist Tania Arens also taught a linoleum carving class, encouraging creative adults to get in on the action! On the final residency day and with the tremendous help of Jordan Santos of Santos Construction, our Hui ‘ohana truly embraced the idea of BIG INK and printed around 50 works of art by driving over the carved blocks with a drum roller! Hui Teaching Artist Katie Peterson also led keiki and families in a foam printmaking project in the children’s studio. We are so incredibly thankful to the Laila Twigg-Smith Art Fund of Hawai‘i Community Foundation, Jordan Santos and Santos Construction, The Maui News, Lowe’s, Picture It Framed, and Hawaiian Carpet One for their support in making this event a success. We also thank the Hui’s Board of Directors, art teachers Laurence Muleh (Maui High), Janet Sato (Baldwin High) Wendy Romanchak (Seabury Hall), Maile Getzen (Kihei Charter), and Brandon LaRue (PYCC), the many artists who created artwork, and the volunteers who contributed their wonderful spirit to this community art making adventure. Visit huinoeau.com or facebook.com/hui.noeau to see additional photos and learn more about an upcoming casual, fun, and celebratory exhibition of all the prints created at BIG INK!

Mahalo to East Maui Watershed Partnership, the exhibiting artists, Jurors Pat Bily and Melissa Chimera, Maui Invasive Species Committee, Halau Wehiwehi O Leilehua and musicians, and our entire community for celebrating the visual arts and conservation on Maui! We also send our deepest appreciation to sponsors and community supporters Aloha Recycling, Pacific Biodiesel, County of Maui, Old Lahaina Lū‘au, Flatbread Pizza, Mana Foods, & Pukalani Superette.

At Family Day 2016, the Hui celebrated the creative achievements of more than 200 keiki who participated in Summer Camp Kaluanui! Bursting with color, imagination, and fun, the Hui gallery showcased artwork of youth ages 5 - 14. Families enjoyed art projects in the Hui studios, a silly scavenger hunt, face painting, artist demos, and more! Mahalo to exhibition sponsors Colleen O’Shea Brady and her grandchildren Ocean Jones, Orion Jones, and Cosette Beloin.

The Hui celebrated Dalani Tanahy’s exhibition, Woman Makes the Malo Makes the Man with a “talk story” and demonstration in October. See page 5 to learn more about this incredible artist and practitioner of Hawaiian kapa.

Woman Makes the Malo Makes the Man: An Exhibition of Kapa by Dalani Tanahy July 8, 2016 – March 31, 2017

In Hawai‘i, the Polynesian introduced paper mulberry (Broussonetia papyrifera) or wauke was the preferred plant for making kapa for cloth-like items. In this exhibition located in the Hui’s “history room,” artist Dalani Tanahy presents a stunning showcase of her recent kapa work. A practitioner for over 20 years, Dalani is a grower of the wauke trees and dye plants, a craftswoman who creates the tools she needs to pound and print kapa and dyes, and a researcher, reader, and doer who has learned to understand the nuances of kapa. Dalani is also a valued Hui Visiting Artist and kumu, helping others to learn and ensure the survival of kapa making. This exhibition was supported by a grant from the Native Arts and Cultures Foundation

Introduction to Metal Clay — Level 1 Roberta Ann Weisenburg Wednesdays, 6 weeks April 5 – May 10 / 6:00 – 9:00 pm Metal Clay is a unique type of clay made up of microscopic particles of real metal, water, and a binder. “Photography has always interested me. I find that images describe things that words can’t explain. I wanted to improve my skills so I took a class with instructor David Ulrich. He taught and refined my basic fundamental skills, visually, with subject matter and black and white processing. The image, ‘Becoming Art,’ (pictured above) was printed at the Hui darkroom and won best in show at Art Maui and was purchased by the State of Hawai‘i as part of their collection. This experience led me to be who I am today as a wedding and portrait photographer. The Hui helped me to realize and achieve my dream to be a photographer over 16 years ago and continues to inspire people to reach their goals and create their way in the world with tools of ingenuity. I would like to express my sincerest appreciation to the Hui for what they have taught me!” – Tad Craig of Tad Craig Photography LLC
