A Letter from Our

BOARD PRESIDENT & SUPERINTENDENT Dear HUHS Community, The District is governed by five (5), at large elected citizens from the community. For 2018 – 2019, we will see two members of the current Board stepping down, and two new board members replacing them.

Stepping down from the Board are Josh Schoemann, President; and Dick Clement, Treasurer. Josh was appointed to the Board in December 2014, and has served as a member, and then President for two years, 2016 – 2018. Josh is also the Washington County Executive. Dick began on the Board in July 2011 and has served for 8 years as a member, Treasurer, and Vice-President. Dick works for Northwestern Mutual Insurance Company. On behalf of the HUHS community, we thank them for their service and dedication to students, the high school, and the District. We count them among our very best!

At the same time, we welcome our two new Board members: Jeff Becker and Scott Henke. Jeff is currently Board President in Hartford Joint 1 School District and is a manager at Walmart. Jeff is married and has a current HUHS sophomore and an incoming 2018 HUHS freshman. Scott, an HUHS alumnus, is the Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce, is married, and has two HUHS alum children. We welcome Jeff and Scott and look forward to their service to the District.

FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENTS Muhammed Faza

Muhammed Faza, who likes to be called Faza, is from Indonesia and is living with the Grinwald family. Faza is an only child, and he got his passion to travel from his mom.

Faza said the culture is so very different from his home since people here obey the rules. The thing he misses most from home is the food, “It is just not the same.” He is really loving his experience at HUHS. He loves all of the class choices and the options he has. In his home high school, the teachers move classes and the students stay in the same room all day.

Faza is involved with the Robotics Club at HUHS and is hoping to join another club in spring. His hobbies include taking pictures, traveling, and cycling.

Elisabeth Prats I Valles

Beth is from Barcelona, Spain.

She has an older sister, mother, and father back home. Beth knew she wanted to participate in the foreign exchange program since her sister was a foreign exchange student in Washington State. Beth really likes HUHS, and she said the people are very nice and friendly. Beth joined the swim team this year and said it is her favorite hobby. She misses many things from home, but she especially misses the food and living in the city. Something Beth was surprised at, “I thought my Spain winter in the 40s was cold, and then I came to Wisconsin, and I realized how terribly cold winter really was.”

Kanapat Chor. Arkarros Pat is from Thailand and a sophomore at HUHS. Back at home, she lives with her parents and 2 younger sisters, ages 13 & 10. Before living here, she never tried a sport. At HUHS she tried dance , track, forensics and wanted to try tennis but missed signing up. She really likes dance, track and forensics. She also joined Math Club. In Thailand, her school days were much longer and went from 7:00 am-5:00 pm. Pat really likes the variety of classes offered at HUHS, and everyone is very friendly. Pat’s future plans: she wants to be a computer network architect, and she is very interested in any kind of Algebra.

Our Associate STREAM-line into the Future You may know about the cutting edge approach to education called STEM which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, but you may not know that St. Gabriel Catholic Parish School offers a unique opportunity that includes Religion and the Arts in addition to STEM. This 21st century educational initiative is called STREAM. In realizing that the Arts go beyond art class, St. Gabriel School offers general music classes, public speaking opportunities, forensics, and instrument lessons. Teaching the Catholic faith continues to be at the core of our educational goals as we instruct 118 children in our 4K-8 St. Gabriel Day School and 175 children in our K-8 Christian Formation classes. Christian values are instilled across the curriculum every day and with this we continue to serve others in our school community, parish community and global community. Here is a sample of the service projects that the students take part in at St. Gabriel School: serving meals at St. Ben’s Community Meal program, making fleece blankets for the needy, collecting food items for the local pantries, collecting supplies for Wanakia Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, making treats for the Washington County Humane Society, making cards for the homebound and participating in the Catholic Relief Service Rice Bowl collection for the needy around the world.

Hartford Joint 1 School District FORENSICS The Central Middle School Forensics season was a huge success this year. The students attended four meets during the season, and even held their own meet that hosted over 600 students in attendance from 25 schools. Many parents, staff, and high school students helped to make the meet possible. Forensics students also performed for families during the sixth annual parent’s night, which was an awesome opportunity to see various categories and performances. The season closed with twenty-two students qualifying to compete at the state meet.

MUSIC Central students have many opportunities for music performances through band, orchestra, and choir. Performances include concerts, honors concerts, jazz fest, spring musical and, most recently, solo and ensemble.

DISTRICTS

In addition to the Arts and Religion, St. Gabriel Catholic Parish School will be offering First Lego League Robotics, Lego Explorers and Chess Club to our students next year in our new school facility, complete with a state-of-the-art STEM Lab. There are many great things happening at St. Gabriel Catholic Parish School, and it is through the dedication of the staff, the commitment of the students, the support of the parents, and the generosity of the parish that we succeed in working together as one body in Christ.

The First United Methodist Church has been in partnership with Hartford Union High School for many years. First United Methodist Church provides their classrooms for our students to use during the make-up date of the ACT, students who need accommodations, and AP testing.

HUHS has partnered with Casa Guadalupe Education Center in West Bend to bring the Dream to Succeed: Latino High School Career Advancement Program to HUHS. The program offers Latino high school students added support for career and secondary-education options, including entering into the workforce directly after high school. We have about 15 students involved in the program, which meets once a month during resource. Thank you Casa Guadalupe for your support.

SkillsUSA is the club for students who like to work with their hands and minds. This year we created the first ever chomping Nile Crocodile for the homecoming parade, we carved pumpkins for the courtyard, and we hosted a very successful 6th annual Bag Toss Tournament. This year for community service, we made wooden hearts to decorate the doors of a local retirement home, and we cut out cardboard hearts for the teachers doors for Valentines Day, we also participated in competitions: District in Watertown and Regionals at UW Stout. We are looking forward to competing at State on April 24 & 25.

4th Annual Winter Camp

The TEE Department hosted it’s 4th annual Winter Camp this winter. We invite 6th, 7th & 8th grade students from the area schools to come to the high school for a Manufacturing Experience. This year they created a snowman with plastic plug eyes, a welded rod to put in the ground and burned dark hat and colorful scarf which had a real carrot nose. They also printed their own camp t-shirt and a key chain. This camp takes about 4-5 hours and is always between Christmas Day and New Years Day.

Power Energy Technology Class (PET)

This course is designed as an introductory class for students with or without previous mechanical knowledge. Students are introduced to the operation, maintenance, and repair of small mechanical systems. Class instruction will focus on four major areas: Internal Combustion Engines, Hydraulic Systems, Pneumatic Systems, and Industrial Controls. Students will learn troubleshooting strategies to identify and correct malfunctions.

Students will be exposed to small engine theory while studying fluid power principles involving pressure, flow, and force.

Preventive maintenance and safety issues will also be discussed.

Coursework will include classroom instruction, hands-on lab time, and onsite activities with local industry partners.

Our Physical Education Department continues to strive in creating physical education options to ensure student success in leading a healthy and active lifestyle. In recent years we have expanded student choice so that students can select courses that fit their unique individual needs. We have courses heavily focused on fitness and performance while others are focused on lifetime activities.

Coaching and Officiating

The Physical Education Department offers a unique opportunity in the Lifeguarding course. HUHS works directly with the Aquatic & Fitness Supervisor, Tyler Mentzel, from the Hartford Park & Recreation Center. The students are able to earn credit, as well as become certified as an American Red Cross Lifeguard. Many students completed the course and used their certificates to become employed in the community with places like the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center or the Signicast Aquatic Center.

For over 20 years, the Physical Education Department has been offering the career based course called “Introduction to Sports Medicine”.

Students enrolled learn about the foundations of sport medicine with a focus on athletic performance and the prevention and care of injuries. This class is unique in that it is one of the only classes offered at HUHS where students get to work directly with health care professionals on a regular basis. Wisconsin Licensed Athletic Trainers (Jeff Dauss & Bryana Kudek from Froedtert Sports Medicine), assist the class by coleading lab sessions multiple times throughout the semester where students get hands on experience with treatment and preventive measures related to sports injuries.

Hartford Union High School’s Physical Education Department also offers a unique opportunity for students to take the course “Coaching and Officiating”. Students learn the fundamentals, as well as an in-depth guide to every aspect of coaching. This course is filled with great discussion, hands-on coaching experiences, and meeting experienced area coaches and officials. All students are able to take the certification test for Principles of Coaching, which can give students a certification to coach any type of sport at the high school level or lower. Many students have successfully gone on and received coaching positions at various levels.

Marketing Director, Grand Avenue Dental Care

Erin went to Bradley University in Peoria, Ill. She graduated with a degree in Health Science and a minor in Spanish, but she spent every spare moment in the theater department. After graduation, she moved to New Jersey to pursue acting in New York City. While on the East Coast, she married another HUHS graduate, Eric Kahle.

She also did a variety of work from waitressing to nannying to managing promotions, all while auditioning, acting and participating in a theater company. They had the first of their two daughters in 2010 and decided to move back to Wisconsin to be closer to family. Since moving home, she has taken up the position of marketing director at her dad’s dental office, Grand Avenue Dental Care. She thoroughly enjoys the combination of helping their patients, planning community events and talking about what the office does. Erin also works with one of her best friends from high school, Jen Novotny, with her company Two Write Hands. They help local companies with their marketing and PR needs. Erin and Jen continue to challenge each other in their work and enjoy seeing local companies succeed and grow.

Erin is currently the president of Pink Pumpkin Run, a nonprofit charity run that

helps local families affected by breast cancer. The idea for the Pink Pumpkin Run came about because her mom is a breast cancer survivor and she wanted to do something local that would benefit their friends and neighbors. The first event was in 2015, and they had just four volunteers organizing it. This October will be the fourth year, and they now have an 8-member board of directors and are officially a 501(c)3 nonprofit. Last year, they had over 370 people participate in the event and raised over $25,000. All of the money stays local to families going through breast cancer, in the form of gift cards for cleaning, groceries, gas, and restaurants.

Erin cares greatly about the growth and future of the Hartford community. In the last two years, she has joined the Hartford Rotary Club and is the chairperson of the Hartford Chamber of Commerce Ambassador group. She believes that Hartford has a lot to offer. Erin hopes that younger generations continue to raise their families here and get involved in local organizations and events so that Hartford continues to flourish.

What does a HUHS education mean to you? My education from HUHS was great. I had the opportunity to be involved in a variety of groups and organizations from the Math Team to Soccer, and many in-between. I always felt that my educators cared about me as an individual and that I was exposed to many different activities. My high school experience gave me the confidence to move out of state for college and pursue new dreams on the East Coast. It really is what you make it!

EUGENE & CHRISTINE GEHRING, Cl a s s Owners of Gehring View Farms, LLC Eugene and Christine Gehring both grew up on a farm and now Eugene is the 5th generation to run his family farm.

Their whole family works on the farm. Their 2 sons, Derik and Jordan, work full time on the farm and daughter, Emily works when she is not in school. Christine works full time off the farm at Dave’s Electric, Inc. She keeps up the farm accounting and assists with chores if needed. Eugene started milking in the stanchion barn right after graduating from high school, the same barn that his Great Uncle Ervin and Aunt Lorraine Beine milked in.

They built a freestall barn and parlor in 1999. Currently, they are milking 300 dairy cows, 3 times a day with help from 6 other employees.

Eugene graduated from HUHS in 1986, Christine in 1990, Derik in 2014, Jordan in 2017, and Emily is a sophomore at HUHS.

The family is active in the St. Lawrence Eager Beaver 4-H Club, Hartford FFA, Hartford FFA Alumni, and Washington County Dairy Promotion.

This year, the Gehring’s would like to invite the community to visit their farm, as they are hosting the Washington County Breakfast on the Farm. This will be their 3rd time hosting! It is on Saturday, June 9th from 6:30AM - 11:30AM. This is a great opportunity for people to see an operating dairy farm, enjoy a delicious breakfast and ice cream with lots of family fun. Dairy farming takes many skills with patience, dedication, leadership and team work skills. There are so many things to know: machinery skills, animal health, vet skills, problem solving, math and accounting. Classes that are very important are the agriculture programs, shop classes, business and accounting classes. Farming is important in providing delicious food for everyone. Farmers strive to make a good and nutritious product with healthy and comfortable animals.

Jim Gottfried lives in Hartford and is married to fellow HUHS alum Heidi (née Shortt, 1998). They have two sons Harrison (13) and Stuart (10). Jim graduated with a BFA in Graphic Design from UW-Platteville. Jim has been working in the print industry for over 15 years and is a Project Manager for the Menomonee Falls based printing company Tailored Label Products, which produce harsh environment labels in the automotive, medical, and manufacturing industries. He manages accounts such as Honda Power, Kawasaki, and Tesla. Jim has been a member of the Florentine Opera Company since 2006 performing in over 30 productions. He has also performed in community theater in the Washington County area and is a board member and resident graphic designer of the Hartford Players. He is also very involved with activities and music at First United Methodist Church.

What does a HUHS education mean to you? I think the greatest part of my education was the discovery of all of my passions in life. I enjoyed playing the saxophone in the band, and Mr. Vandermuese and Mr. Kranjac helped to develop my love for instrumental music and skills at reading music. Singing is an essential component to my life, and Ms. Knoll cultivated a gift in me that I never knew I had. To this day, I still remember the many lessons I learned through her unceasing dedication to her students. And I even have the benefit of still getting advice from her from time to time after performances.

Mr. Mohr and Frau Johnson brought the joys of theater into my life. The lessons learned I carry with me daily. The relationships that were built are some of the strongest bonds still holding in my life. My livelihood lives in printing and graphic design, and because of the patience and guidance of Mr. Lonergan, I continued my education into college am now able to provide for my family and enjoy a career where I can truly shine and make a contribution.

Congratulations to Mr. Dan Dobner, Hartford Union High School Principal who has been named the Educator of the Year. HUHS and our students are fortunate to have Mr. Dobner as their principal.

Mr. Dobner received his Bachelor’s degree from UWWhitewater in Business Education. His first teaching assignment was in East Peoria, IL teaching Business while coaching football and track. After one year in Illinois, Mr. Dobner moved back to Wisconsin and worked at Waunakee High School, outside of Madison, for seven years as a Business teacher and coached football and track. Mr. Dobner has worked at HUHS for the last 16 years. He came to Hartford Union High School as an administrator in 2002. He has been an Associate Principal, and for the last eight years the principal.

Mr. Dobner lives in Hartford with his wife Molly, and daughter Megan, who is a freshman at HUHS. His son, Jacob, is an HUHS alumni, and a freshman in college. In Mr. Dobner’s spare time you can find him on a lake! He and his family enjoy boating and all the water sports that go along with it.

According to Mr. Dobner, the best part of being a principal at HUHS is making those connections and relationships with students, staff, parents, and community members. The biggest reward is talking to students that you have helped out over the years, especially when they come back after graduating, to hear how you have helped them with an issue, big or small.

Mr. Dobner always has a positive attitude towards all students and staff, is a tremendous motivator at assemblies and school events, and is someone we can trust.

His leadership and ability to handle and remain cool in difficult situations is bar none. Mr. Rich Schmidt is one of our Family and Consumer Science (FACS) teachers. Mr. Schmidt is a Wisconsin native, however, he came to Hartford from Honolulu, HI, where he spent his first year of teaching. Mr. Schmidt lives with his wife who is an elementary school teacher and three boys ages 13, 11, 9.

Mr. Schmidt loves to teach all of his classes, but students in the lower level Culinary classes always have endless enthusiasm and energy; and students in the upper level classes always amaze him with their creativity and the awesome things they make.

Outside of the classroom, he loves to travel and experience new things when life permits. Mr. Schmidt is currently completing his 23rd year at HUHS! He loves coming to work and feels very blessed to work with incredibly talented and enthusiastic staff and to be part of the wonderful HUHS family.

Ms. Dawn Bloomer went into her first interview after college at HUHS and has been at here ever since. Ms. Bloomer has been at HUHS for 35 years. She has two children, Cassandra and Dylan. She has a big heart for animals and has a dog, cat, and some fish. In her free time, she likes to create art and garden. One of her favorite things to draw is portraits. Ms. Bloomer said that it is hard to say one class is her favorite, but she really likes teaching pottery, and AP Art Studio which is a very rewarding class: seeing the students grow in their subjects. One memorable moment: two of her students met in her jewelry class and later they got married. She designed and created their wedding rings. HUHS is lucky to have such a dedicated, caring person like Ms. Dawn Bloomer!

HUHS’s very own, Marley Kreger, was elected as the Wisconsin FBLA State President. The duties of the Wisconsin FBLA State President include presiding over executive board meetings and assigning duties as needed, serving as a liaison between the State executive board and the Wisconsin FBLA-PBL Foundation, reporting the Marley Kreger activities of Wisconsin FBLA to the National office on a regular basis and presiding over the State Leadership Conference. What an amazing opportunity Marley!

Hartford Union High School’s Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) chapter had the pleasure of hosting the 2018 Wisconsin FBLA Region VI Leadership Conference on Saturday, February 3, 2018. Our Hartford chapter hosted over 700 students, advisers and judges from 24 schools who competed in and judged over 60 business, marketing, and information technology events. Conference attendees had the opportunity to learn more about PBL, the collegiate version of FBLA; get a taste of “adulting” by playing the financial literacy game Spent!; and discovered various career opportunities at our morning workshops! The afternoon’s entertainment was an improv show put on by ComedySportz. Competing members who placed in the Top 3 in their respective events moved on to compete at the State Leadership Conference hosted in La Crosse this April!

finalists from HUHS competed at the State tournament in Lake Geneva. All put in a lot of study time and preparation to do well on their role play scenarios as well as their written tests. Top 10 medalists in the state include Thomas Kellicut, Marley Kreger, and Sophia Stingl. One competitor, Thomas Kellicut, has merited a spot at the International competition in Atlanta this April. Mr. Kasza is exceptionally proud of the team and looks forward to them all competing next year.

FFA WEEK FFA week includes

activities for students to participate in during their lunch and flex periods.

Milk chug/bottle stacking was the event for the first day, and poop the potato/sack race for the second. Thursday was mini bale stacking, and Friday was bean bags and also drive your tractor to school. There is also a fundraiser that FFA puts on to raise money that will be donated to the Hartford food pantry. FFA offers that the teacher who has the most amount donated to their bucket has to kiss a calf or goat, this year it was English teacher Nick Dobberstein.

HUHS in the COMMUNITY

Hartford Union High School’s first Day of Service will be held on Thursday, May 24th. In this time of school accountability focused mainly on test scores, the staff of HUHS have considered our philosophy and envisioned what we want to see our students achieve. We have claimed our mission, which is to engage and support all learners to discover their passions, achieve high academic goals, and contribute to a global society. It is our belief that students should reach beyond their school walls to explore their passions and give back to the community.

The entire student body and staff, approximately 1,500 people, will be participating in this day. Some of the projects planned include cleaning up park trails, reading to elementary school students, playing games with senior citizens, and beautifying Hartford. Projects were planned with the goal of contributing to the positive spirit of our community.

We are excited about this project and intend to make it an annual event with the community’s support. We are planning forward with the hope that we inspire our youth to continue their service after graduation. HUHS’s FBLA & DECA club has successfully completed it’s annual fundraiser, and it only took a minute.

During the month of March the club conducted the Miracle Minute fundraiser each Friday during eighth Athlete of the Month period. Teachers passed a collection envelope around November the classroom and students generously contributed their Olivia Meinberg (Swimming) change to a worthy cause. In all, HUHS FBLA & DECA raised over $1,000. All proceeds collected from the event were donated to the March of Dimes December and the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).

NHS Habitat For Humanity

NHS volunteered this year through the Habitat for Humanity “A Brush with Kindness” program to help build a home in the Jackson area for a family in need. It was a large group activity that occurred on March 3rd from 9am - 3pm. Students did a variety of activities that included painting, installing flooring, etc.

StuCo Blood Drive Student Council did it's annual winter blood drive in

early February. Since 1998, HUHS has collected 8,559 units of blood, which has helped save thousands of lives. HUHS has been the number one district in the state for blood donations, and to carry on this tradition, we need students, staff, and community members to donate. HUHS blood drives were open to all students, staff, and community members.
