Greetings Oriole Families and Community!

I send my warmest and healthiest wishes to each of you during this continuing national emergency and offer special appreciation to those of you performing essential duties necessary for the health and well being of our entire community. Tough times don’t last, tough people do, and I know there are brighter days ahead!

Each of the 24 years I have served as an educator at the high school level, I have been part of collaborative work in reviewing the success of high school graduates and identifying what it means to be ready for each student’s next step. In recent years, one has heard the phrase college and career-ready used regularly, with an occasional reference to life readiness as well.

These conversations have led to great discussion about the value of all of the content our students gain throughout their K-12 educational experience while exploring how to develop the many life skills students need to be successful after high school.

The silver lining with this recent nationwide school closure is students across our country are being offered each day a real-life opportunity to gain and/or refine such skills. This pandemic has and will continue to teach our youth, and each of us, the value of being flexible, dealing with the situation we are dealt, overcoming obstacles, and coming together when times are tough. Our country, our state, and our great HUHS community will be better in the long-term based upon the challenges we have faced over the past month. We are better together, and as we move towards a return to normalcy, know that I am thinking of each of you and look forward to seeing everyone out in the community real soon!

Our Reasons Why

Future Plans: I have been accepted to Moraine Park Technical College in West Bend for Business Management, furthermore I would like to work at BMO Harris Bank working with personal finances and the public.

Associate School: HNR Favorite Class: The best class I have taken at HUHS would have to be Journalistic Composition because I get to write and edit the school newspaper! Besides that, I love any Spanish course at HUHS because of the fun learning environment and the ability to think in another language.

Favorite thing about HUHS: I love the atmosphere of HUHS; it is relaxed, wherein students have the ability to learn at their own pace and get along with other staff and students so cohesively. One thing I love to reflect on is my experiences with my teachers, that I cannot honestly say that I have had a “bad” teacher.

Activities: I am an Editor-in-Chief of The Hartford Chronicle, the school newspaper.

Future Plans: I want to get a job where I can work with plants or animals.

Associate School: Central Middle School Favorite Class: Plant and Soil Science because we learn about the soil and how to grow plants for food.

Favorite thing about HUHS: FFA is my favorite part of high school. I have met lots of friends and attend many different contests, conferences, and activities.

Activities: FFA, Best Buddies, Powder Puff Football and Treble Choir.

She serves as our FFA chapter historian, maintaining the scrapbook, and has been a member of our state competing Dairy Products team since she was a freshman. Future Plans: After high school, I want to go to college and play volleyball there, but I currently do not know what degree I would like to go to school for.

Associate School: Richfield School District Favorite Class: My favorite class is PLTW Human Body Systems. I really enjoy this class because we get to do a lot of hands-on experiments and procedures that introduce things used in the medical field. For example, we dissected a cow eye and examined a cow elbow!

Favorite thing about HUHS: My favorite thing about HUHS is how much the teachers want you to succeed. If you need help, they are more than willing to find time to meet with you in Resource or before school. Because you have easy access to teachers, it makes it easier to learn and create stronger bonds with teachers.

Activities: Volleyball, H-Club, Math Club “Riley is everything we want our student-athletes to be at HUHS. She is a hard-working student, who is passionate about school and gaining knowledge in various classes. She asks questions when she has them and cares about her grade. On the athletic side, she was a 1st team All Conference volleyball player freshman year and again this year! She volunteers her time for H-Club by helping our community become a better place.” - Eric Vanden Acker

Future Plans: Attend Florida Tech and get a bachelors degree in astrobiology, finish grad school at Florida Tech and get a PhD in evolutionary biology. I chose this specific plan because evolution and astrobiology have been interests of mine since I was young.

Associate School: Homeschooled Favorite Class: Biology, because the teacher is very good and teaches very professionallywhile remaining engaging.

Favorite thing about HUHS: How focused the teachers are on their student’s learning.

Activities: Nothing yet.

Master Facilities Plan Master Facilities Plan Phase I January 20, 2020, The Board of Education approved bathroom renovations in the main hallway of HUHS as part of the Master Facilities Plan Phase I. The rest of the Phase I Plan was approved at the March Board of Education meeting.

Phase I includes: Relocate district and high school offices, including health office and student services to the area currently occupied by the culinary lab and east commons space.

Create a concession stand area in the front lobby as well as create visual symmetry on the opposite side.

Relocate culinary lab and classroom to space currently occupied by Technology and Engineering Education (TEE).

Create a new fitness and wellness center where offices are currently located.

Remodel all science classrooms.

Create new TEE classrooms in space currently used for weight room and fitness.

Remodel 2nd bathroom that has outdated/inefficient structures, plumbing, and fixtures.

Project Start: January 2020 Finish Date: May 2020 Details: These bathrooms were built in 1958 with the original construction of the building. Some challenges with the structure of the original construction prevented remodeling in the past. In order to provide adequate facilities our students deserve, we have to face those challenges and invest in the building’s future to provide facilities for our students. Along with structural challenges and necessary ADA compliance, other issues will be addressed:

Significant challenges with the crawl space where plumbing is housed.

Construction Update:  New structural steel beams are in place. New plumbing is installed. 

Electrical has been updated.

Flooring and most of the tile  has been removed.

Outdated Electrical and plumbing.

Secure Entry / Offices

Project Start: March 2020 Finish Date: August 2020 Details: To ensure a true secure entry for visitors to HUHS, we are moving the offices from four separate areas to one central location at the front secure entrance of the building in the East Commons area. East Commons was only being utilized during the lunch hours, a small fraction of time in the school day. We are excited to offer a one-stop-shop for visitors as well as a proper concession stand for our indoor sporting events. The following offices are moving to the front of the building:

Construction Update:  Structural steel beams for new offices are in place. Concession Stand walls are up.  Electrical has been wired  Flooring and most of the tile has been removed.

Fitness Center

Project Start: June 2020 Finish Date: November 2020 The vacated four office space areas opens up a versatile space adjacent to the fieldhouse, perfect for a fitness facility.

Currently, our fitness area consists of small disjointed areas of our building with old equipment. The following are renderings of what the space might look like when finished.

Science Labs

Project Start: June 2020 Finish Date: August 2020 Our Science labs are an area that has not been touched for decades. They are in need of updated spaces with flexible furniture for classroom time and lab time.

Hartford Union High School wishes to recognize alumni for their accomplishments by creating a Hartford Union High School Hall of Fame. In addition to recognizing alumni, we will also demonstrate to our current students the successes earned by HUHS graduates that incredibly impact our city, our state, and our country.

Nominations are now open for candidates who meet the following criteria: • Graduate of Hartford Union High School of at least 10 years • May be living or deceased • Made a significant contribution to Hartford or society as a whole

Chosen recipients will be honored during the Hartford Union High School's 2020 Homecoming festivities.

HUHS Opportunities

4 Ways to Earn College Credit at HUHS ADVANCED PLACEMENT

AP courses are designed to meet the needs of students who are interested in a more challenging and in-depth academic program.

The AP Program offers students a rigorous curriculum set by the College Board and the opportunity to pursue AP testing is offered to all students whether or not they are enrolled in a course designated as Advanced Placement.

Information from the AP teacher assists students to prepare for the AP tests given by the College Board in May. AP tests are optional and are for those students who wish to earn college credits.

Juniors and seniors may receive dual credit (high school and college credit) for approved classes.

Students register with the university and earn a transcripted grade for this class.

COLLEGE LEVEL EXAMINATION PROGRAM CLEP courses offer students the option to write examinations in order to show knowledge of college-level coursework. CLEP general and subject examinations are accepted for credit by many colleges/universities. Students may earn weighted grades if they pass the related CLEP examination.

Transcripted Credit

Under an agreement with Moraine Park Technical College (MPTC), some courses offered at HUHS may be taken for Transcripted Technical College Credit. Students who successfully complete the course will be awarded high school credit and credits with MPTC. 7 TC Classes Available: • • • • • • •
