Dear HUHS Community, New Years are new beginnings in many ways: personal, professional, spiritual, etc. They remind us of the most recent past, as well as give hope and promise to what lies ahead. As we reflected on the past, we focused on the 2018 holiday season, and felt deep pride in how and how much our Oriole students contribute to those in need, to the community, and to the school.

This issue of Ovations highlights only a few of those opportunities that HUHS students took to give of self to others, in a variety of ways. Please note the Ovations cover! It highlights students giving blood to 12 Jerry Awards nominated musical, donating canned goods to collecting toys for needy children, and ringing the Salvation Army Bell. Our students are Hartford area INVOLVED citizens!

What’s not to LOVE about these students who represent what is the very best at HUHS! Then, read through the Fall Athletic Recap. Hard work and success in academics, and involvement in co-curriculars: those, coupled with strong family and community support, is the formula for high school achievement. We don’t often enough consider that when our students are involved in co-curriculars, they are contributing to the success of HUHS and the community. They bring pride, tradition of success, and honor to themselves, their families, HUHS, and the greater Hartford community. Finally, check-out the new Best Buddies Program.

HNR Intermediate Band in Parade Takes First Place!

HNR Intermediate Band marched in the Hartford Christmas Parade on Saturday, November 10th. The Honor Intermediate Marching Band made up of 45 students from 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade performed “Jingle Bell Rock” and “Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow” for all who attended this annual event. We were so pleased to receive first place in the category of “Marching Band” performers.

Peace Lutheran School 50th Anniversary Peace Lutheran celebrated its school’s 50th Anniversary this October. The week-long celebration included a Spirit Week for the students, a Piano Recital featuring current students and alumni, and a Cornhole Tournament among current families, alumni families, and the entire Peace family.

The celebration culminated on Sunday, October 21, 2018.

Over 750 joined in the special worship services in which the entire student body participated. 350 people joined in a fellowship meal following the services. Branches Band, led by a Peace alumnus, provided entertainment along with guest speakers. Former Principal, James Rademan, spoke about all the blessings that Peace has received over the past 50 years, and Peace alumnus and parent, Karen Conrad, spoke about the positive impact Peace has had on her family and how we can look forward to a bright future.

Peace is grateful for the positive relationships it has maintained with the Hartford community these past 50 years and looks forward to many more years serving the Hartford community.

We also thanked donors for gifts received to complete the first phase of an HVAC renovation which totaled over $200K, and we did a push to gather funds for our next phase estimated at $150K.

Future Plans: Two areas I am interested in going into after high school are machine operator and professional builder.

Associate School: HNR Favorite Class: Welding I class. I enjoy the processes and everything we do in the class.

Favorite thing about HUHS: I really like the variety and availability of classes that are offered here for electives.

Activities: Curently I am in Pep Band and Marching Band and I look forward to continuing with them.

‘22 Jadrian is a student in my Freshman Cohort class.

Jadrian displays a high level of intellectual curiosity in the educational setting. He is a kind, compassionate classmate who works well with others in the group setting.

Future Plans: I have not decided whether or not I want to go into medical school to be a general surgeon or law school to be a DA. I’d also like to play volleyball or some sort of cocurricular activity.

Associate School: Peace Lutheran

Favorite Class: Human Body Systems of PLTW, and Medical Terminology.

The teachers are both so great and those subjects really peaked my interests for the future.

Future Plans: I really love design, and it’s between going into graphic design or interior design.

Associate School: Erin Favorite Class: Spanish or choir. Both are classes I’m constantly trying to improve in.

‘20 ‘21 Favorite thing about HUHS: Teachers. They are all so different and they try to make an effort to connect with their students and truly they want us all to succeed.

They also give us our freedom, trust us, and know that we will make the right choices.

Activities at HUHS: Volleyball and I absolutely love it! I also work at the Birdhiouse which has gotten me even closer with my friend, Kaelyn, and the regular customers who come in every day.

Farren is an outgoing and actively engaged member of the Human Body Systems class. She enthusiastically takes on the challenges of a rigorous biomedical sciences course as she keeps things upbeat with her witty sense of humor. ~Melanie Axford

Favorite thing about HUHS: I really appreciate the numerous classes that are available. they give me a chance to explore different pathways and career choices.

Activities: I’m in VBC and National Honors Society.

Alexis is a wonderfully talented young lady who is very conscientious of the work that she does, always wanting to ensure she is performing to the best of her ability. During class I know I can rely on Alexis to be engaged and focused, always watching me for cues, cutoffs, and expressive details.

Her contribution to Voces Bel Canto is significant, with her kind and generous personality making those around her feel comfortable and building a warm, welcoming classroom environment. Alexis has a strong work ethic, sweet disposition, and is truly a joy to have in class! ~ Emily Schuhmacher

Future Plans: I want to go into music as a career and want to go to school in the Chicago area. I am hoping to study sound production or composition. I would also like to continue playing my violin and viola as a soloist or in an ensemble.

Associate School: Friess Lake Favorite Class: CAPP Spanish-the learning activities are fun and easy to understand as well as helpful so I can use them in the future.

Favorite thing about HUHS: Teachers. All of the teachers I have had since my first year have been very energetic and excited to teach. I have enjoyed learning from them and have been able to ask them for help if I need it.

Activities: I play in the orchestra and have been a part of the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra for five years and the Wisconsin School Music Association’s State Honors Orchestra.

Victor is an incredible young musician who performs as the HUHS Concertmaster -a position he has held for 3.5 years. Not only is Victor an incredible young musical artist, but he is also very passionate about learning, coachable, and a team player who strives to achieve excellence. Victor is a true young professional who inspires others through his charismatic and serving leadership. ~ Andy Hacker

From Our District Administrator

MR. DENNIS G KACZOR Greetings HNR Families, This year marks the third year of the Herman-Neosho-Rubicon School District. I am honored to work in a place that values students and their families as well as the collegial relationships among our staff.

This year marked the first time that the new district was assessed a school accountability score as measured by the Department of Education (DPI) and the school report card system. I am happy to report that our school scored 75.1 which Exceeds Expectations.

When it comes to the bottom line, student achievement is the reason we exist and the reason we continue to research ways to improve our educational offerings. This year our teachers are improving through a teacher led initiative to provide a safe learning environment for intellectual risk taking. This program is entitled “Kids First from Day One” and is being implemented throughout the year. Our staff is also receiving coaching in Readers and Writers Workshop through CESA 6 and we continue to grow with College Preparatory Math (CPM) which is a problem solving based math program. There is always something happening here at HNR and we welcome feedback and questions. Our focus is on finding ways to help our students grow intellectually, emotionally and socially so they are ready for their next step in life’s journey.

Honor Elementary 4K Screening Honor Elementary 4K Screening Day is just around the corner! On February 21, 2019 we welcome parents and children to attend our 4K Screening Day. The purpose of this special day is to help our families in our community be aware of the developmental level of their child(ren), discuss any questions or concerns they may have about their child’s development and/or upcoming 4K school experience, and to introduce them to our school and staff. We will have several different stations/activities throughout the morning where each child may participate. Our intent is to have the children feel welcome and excited for their first school experience next fall!

In addition to our 4K program, we offer a school district FourYear-Old Kindergarten Wraparound option for our students from 11:30 AM - 3:05 PM. Our Wrap Around program will include: recess, lunch, rest time, structured extended learning opportunities, snack time, and coordinated free play with academic centers.

Hours: 6:00 AM - 6:00 PM Monday-Friday

Cost: $3/Hour 4K Wrap Around Care with Mrs. Schaefer, our 4K Teacher, is available everyday from 11:30 AM-3:05 PM The 4K Wrap Around Care program has extended learning opportunities and operates only when school is in session.

Elementary Students Start Home Libraries

Students at Honor Elementary recently received a boost to their home libraries, thanks to a grant from Mark Tauscher and his TRIFECTA Foundation. The TRIFECTA Foundation is a non-profit organization committed to enhancing the education and literacy of students in Wisconsin. Thanks to the generosity of the grant, each student at Honor Elementary was able to receive up to $10 worth of books at the recent Scholastic Book Fair, FREE. The intent behind this mission was for each student to have a book of his/her own to begin or add to a home library as research has shown that having books in the home can conclusively increase academic performance. All of us at Honor Elementary are thankful for this opportunity granted to our students.

Glow Walk

The Honor Intermediate Fuel Up to Play 60 students organized and led a Glow Walk, which was an exciting kickoff to the school year!! Activities included glow-in-the-dark football, glow-in-the-dark frisbee and a glow walk around the school grounds. We had a great turnout with over 100 people attending. At the end of our 60 minutes of activity the FUTP60 students handed out healthy snacks donated by Piggly Wiggly and prizes to the participating students. This activity was funded by the NFL and Wisconsin Dairy Council.

HNR Implements Coaching Model At HNR our teachers are always learning and striving to improve. They are reflective practitioners who think deeply about their instruction. They are currently working with a CESA 6 coach to help improve instruction in a writing workshop. The coach also helps teachers to interpret and use data to guide instructional decisions. This partnership allows our teachers to hone those skills necessary to effectively apply their learning with our students in a timely manner.

For some sessions the coach models lessons within select classrooms. These lessons demonstrate specific strategies, routines, and/or activities. Each lesson is then followed by discussion and analysis.

For other sessions teachers are working collaboratively to plan an effective classroom writing workshop for all of our students. This process is a collaborative one and allows for problem solving in a supportive environment, as well as for the sharing of ideas between teachers in other classrooms and grade levels.

Honor Elementary Holiday Concerts

December 13th the Kindergarten, First and Second Grades performed in the afternoon.

Songs they sang were “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer,” “O Christmas Tree” and “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town.”

At the end the Second Graders provided the accompaniment to “Deck the Halls” on Boom Whackers and Desk Bells. The concert ended with the students and the audience singing “Away In a Manger.”

The Third and Fourth Grades performed in the evening. Songs they sang were “Let it Snow,” and “Winter Wonderland.” Both grades sang “Go Tell It On the Mountain” as the Fourth Graders played xylophones.

The Grand Finale was a sing-a-long with the audience to “Silent Night.” It was a great musical day and both concerts were enjoyed by many spectators.

Hartford Midnight Madness Honor Intermediate band students also performed for this year’s Midnight Madness on Friday, December 14th. Soloists and small ensembles played for shoppers at this special holiday shopping event in downtown Hartford. We are proud of our musicians and applaud their enthusiasm to play out in the community!

Honor Elementary Elders Program

All grandparents and senior members of the community are welcome to make memories with the 1st and 4th grade students.

Each month is a different activity offering new opportunities to learn from each other.

It’s a great way to bring generations together.

Mark your calendars for the following dates: Tuesday, January 15 Thursday, February 21 Tuesday, March 19 Thursday, April 18 Tuesday, May 21 1:30-2:45pm at Honor Elementary School Library 201 Center Street, Neosho Honor School District received the designation/award as a 2018 Promising Practice School of Character for the Elders Program from the Wisconsin Character Education Partnership. To receive this designation, a character education program had to be successfully implemented, demonstrating elements of the Eleven Principles of Character Education.

The Elders Program “creates a caring school community”, and “provides students with opportunities for moral action” which are two of the Eleven Principles.

HNR 8th Grade ACP November 19th, the Honor Intermediate eighth grade students took part in Academic Career planning (ACP) activities by visiting three Fond du Lac area colleges, Marion University, the University of Wisconsin - Fond du Lac campus and Moraine Park Technical College. Students toured all three, learned about post-secondary opportunities and did some hands-on activities. The purpose of the tour was to introduce students to the idea of how their high school years can lead them to a variety of career paths, even taking some college courses while in high school.

“This year, the students of the musical raised money for two charities. In Little Shop of Horrors, Audrey is abused by her boyfriend. While the musical makes light of this situation, the

students felt that they needed to take this opportunity to assist women who find themselves in abusive situations and to work to curb violence against women. During the first weekend, the students collected $580 in donations from the audience for the Sojourner Peace Center in Milwaukee Wisconsin (pictured). It is a safe place for abused women. During the second weekend, the students collected $750 in donations from the audience for the LOVE>hate project in Hartford Wisconsin. This project is working to curb male violence against women. The students presented checks to both organizations.” Shelia Parker, HUHS Musical Advisor.

I really like Hartford and all the people I’ve met here, everyone is very kind and nice to me.

My host family is the best; I couldn’t ask for a better one! We’ve been together only 4 months but for me they already are my second family. My sister is first of all one of my best friends here and I love spending time with her (Miranda Parker). I found a lot of friends here. I’m on the dance team and I love spending time with them. I love dancing, I started when I was 3. We partcipated in several competitions and I had a lot of fun.

I was also part of the cast in the musical “Little Shop Of Horrors”. I think that was the best experience I have ever had here. All the people in the cast are a second family for me now, and performing in front of a lot of people every night was just amazing. I also had my first and last homecoming of my life and it was just so beautiful. I had a very good time. I also visited New York and Chicago with my family, and I totally fell in love with NY!

My name is Phattharawan Nimchanasit but I go by June.

I am from Thailand and a Junior. Back home, I live with my parents and 1 younger brother who’s 12 yrs. old. I like adventures, traveling and playing sports. At school in Thailand, I don’t have much time to play sports because we have to learn very hard and have to learn a special study after school. At HUHS I joined the Bowling club and Forensics. It was very fun because I got to know a lot of people and they are very nice and friendly to me. I really like the classes I’m taking here. Since I’ve been in the USA, I have been to many places: Pennsylvania, New York and Chicago. It was very fun to travel and see a lot of beautiful places. Since I have been here, I really like my family, my friends, food and people; everyone is very nice to me. I have been doing a lot of activities and going to many places; rock climbing, paddle boarding, jet skiing, apple picking, and a water park.

The thing that surprised me is the weather -it’s very cold but I really like the snow.

I arrived in Hartford on August 3. I have been here almost five months and I did a lot of things. First of all, I was on the Tennis varsity team, where I met a lot of good friends. We created really good relationships and we shared lots of moments together. The last time I played tennis was in October, when I ended my last game in Sectionals. It was one of the funnest things that I did here and it helped me get to know a lot of people. When the season was over I decided to be on the ski team, but it was too cold for me so I quit.

During all this time I made wonderful experiences with my host family and I had a lot of fun. I went to New York and Chicago with them, we cut a Christmas tree, we ate a lot of good Italian food and will be going on a ski trip to Michigan. I can’t wait!

I’m glad that I can experience life in real American high school and in US. Some things I have been doing during my time here are; Rotary orientation in Green Lake in September, tennis in September, and had a great time with the group and coaches. Rotary trip to Chicago in December, homecoming activities and dance. With my host family I have been ice skating in Milwaukee.

I experienced and enjoyed my first Halloween and Thanksgiving and went on a trip to Florida and a skiing trip up north. I look forward to getting to know my second host family and experiencing more new things.

Our community partners represent partnerships that are mutually supportive, and for which we are deeply grateful.

Hartford Union High School is extremely excited to be starting a Best Buddies Club.

Best Buddies creates 1:1 friendship matches of students with an intellectual or developmental disability (IDD), the “Buddy”, to a student without an IDD, the “Peer Buddy”.

The club is led by a team of student officers and two staff advisors. The student officers will plan and coordinate monthly events which allow the friendship matches to do something together. In December, a cookie decorating party to get to know one another. That party helped form relationships to help the officers and advisors decide who would be “buddies” with who. We had our kick-off event Match Party on January 21st. At the match party, the 1:1 friendship matches of Buddy and Peer Buddy were revealed.

Teacher Spotlight Pete Kelly

Jeff Martin This is my 18th year of teaching Social Studies at HUHS. I currently teach Sociology, Intro to Psychology and AP Psychology. I enjoy helping students learn more about themselves and the world around them. It is especially rewarding to see students have moments of success after weeks, months, and years of hard work and determination.

Outside of school, I enjoy cheering on my favorite teams, yard work, and coaching my kids in various sports. I coach my kids in soccer, basketball and baseball. Our family enjoys taking road trips. Recent travels include Florida and New York City. We also enjoy spending family time each summer in Door County.

This is my 21st year of teaching and my 19th at HUHS. I love a lot of different things about teaching. But one of the best elements of the profession is simply the day to day interactions with the students themselves. Strip away the content that we teach, it’s truly enjoyable just interacting with the kids inside and outside of the classroom. I’m really lucky, though, that I love history and I get to work with students in that world on a day to day basis. Seeing kids make historical and modern connections is a rewarding experience that keeps me going through the years. Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with my wife and three children. While I don’t have any really unique or interesting hobbies, our family tries to take a trip each year and visit some areas that have interesting history to them. In recent years we’ve traveled to Washington D.C. New York, Nashville, St. Louis, and Roanoke, North Carolina. I love a wide variety of sports and still try to remain as active as possible through coaching track at HUHS, playing and coaching soccer with my kids, and running (when motivated).

Demonstrations, experiments and hands-on activities for all ages! Enter through the main lobby and smell the sweet aroma of cakes, cookies or others treats created by our Culinary Arts students.

If you are hungry for dinner, our Band Booster Parents will have a variety of soups for sale with the proceeds going to the HUHS Band Program. Our AgriScience class is also hosting a bake sale.

Parents and community members can view the latest updates at the school as well as learn about our cocurricular activities and sports. We call it an “Academic and Activity Extravaganza!”

World Languages French classes will be making crepes and Spanish classes will be serving up quesadillas English Department will show how students can get involved in Mock Trial, Model UN, Forensics and the School Newspaper “The Hartford Chronicle.”

Learn about the school store – The Birdhouse. Students can work at the store and apply what they have learned in class to create an experience that helps them in real world job experience.

Interested in Music? Music Department’s Band, Orchestra and Choir will be entertaining us throughout the building.
