Dear HUHS Community, New Years are new beginnings in many ways: personal, professional, spiritual, etc. They remind us of the most recent past, as well as give hope and promise to what lies ahead. As we reflected on the past, we focused on the 2018 holiday season, and felt deep pride in how and how much our Oriole students contribute to those in need, to the community, and to the school.

This issue of Ovations highlights only a few of those opportunities that HUHS students took to give of self to others, in a variety of ways. Please note the Ovations cover! It highlights students giving blood to 12 Jerry Awards nominated musical, donating canned goods to collecting toys for needy children, and ringing the Salvation Army Bell. Our students are Hartford area INVOLVED citizens!

What’s not to LOVE about these students who represent what is the very best at HUHS! Then, read through the Fall Athletic Recap. Hard work and success in academics, and involvement in co-curriculars: those, coupled with strong family and community support, is the formula for high school achievement. We don’t often enough consider that when our students are involved in co-curriculars, they are contributing to the success of HUHS and the community. They bring pride, tradition of success, and honor to themselves, their families, HUHS, and the greater Hartford community. Finally, check-out the new Best Buddies Program.

HNR Intermediate Band in Parade Takes First Place!

Honoring the past, Embracing the future

HNR Intermediate Band marched in the Hartford Christmas Parade on Saturday, November 10th. The Honor Intermediate Marching Band made up of 45 students from 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade performed “Jingle Bell Rock” and “Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow” for all who attended this annual event. We were so pleased to receive first place in the category of “Marching Band” performers.

Peace Lutheran School 50th Anniversary Peace Lutheran celebrated its school’s 50th Anniversary this October. The week-long celebration included a Spirit Week for the students, a Piano Recital featuring current students and alumni, and a Cornhole Tournament among current families, alumni families, and the entire Peace family.

The celebration culminated on Sunday, October 21, 2018.

Over 750 joined in the special worship services in which the entire student body participated. 350 people joined in a fellowship meal following the services. Branches Band, led by a Peace alumnus, provided entertainment along with guest speakers. Former Principal, James Rademan, spoke about all the blessings that Peace has received over the past 50 years, and Peace alumnus and parent, Karen Conrad, spoke about the positive impact Peace has had on her family and how we can look forward to a bright future.

Peace is grateful for the positive relationships it has maintained with the Hartford community these past 50 years and looks forward to many more years serving the Hartford community.

We also thanked donors for gifts received to complete the first phase of an HVAC renovation which totaled over $200K, and we did a push to gather funds for our next phase estimated at $150K.

Future Plans: Two areas I am interested in going into after high school are machine operator and professional builder.

Associate School: HNR Favorite Class: Welding I class. I enjoy the processes and everything we do in the class.

Favorite thing about HUHS: I really like the variety and availability of classes that are offered here for electives.

Activities: Curently I am in Pep Band and Marching Band and I look forward to continuing with them.

‘22 Jadrian is a student in my Freshman Cohort class.

Jadrian displays a high level of intellectual curiosity in the educational setting. He is a kind, compassionate classmate who works well with others in the group setting.

Future Plans: I have not decided whether or not I want to go into medical school to be a general surgeon or law school to be a DA. I’d also like to play volleyball or some sort of cocurricular activity.

Associate School: Peace Lutheran

Favorite Class: Human Body Systems of PLTW, and Medical Terminology.

The teachers are both so great and those subjects really peaked my interests for the future.

Future Plans: I really love design, and it’s between going into graphic design or interior design.

‘20 ‘21 Favorite thing about HUHS: Teachers. They are all so different and they try to make an effort to connect with their students and truly they want us all to succeed.

They also give us our freedom, trust us, and know that we will make the right choices.

Activities at HUHS: Volleyball and I absolutely love it! I also work at the Birdhiouse which has gotten me even closer with my friend, Kaelyn, and the regular customers who come in every day.

Farren is an outgoing and actively engaged member of the Human Body Systems class. She enthusiastically takes on the challenges of a rigorous biomedical sciences course as she keeps things upbeat with her witty sense of humor. ~Melanie Axford

Favorite thing about HUHS: I really appreciate the numerous classes that are available. they give me a chance to explore different pathways and career choices.

Activities: I’m in VBC and National Honors Society.

Alexis is a wonderfully talented young lady who is very conscientious of the work that she does, always wanting to ensure she is performing to the best of her ability. During class I know I can rely on Alexis to be engaged and focused, always watching me for cues, cutoffs, and expressive details.

Her contribution to Voces Bel Canto is significant, with her kind and generous personality making those around her feel comfortable and building a warm, welcoming classroom environment. Alexis has a strong work ethic, sweet disposition, and is truly a joy to have in class! ~ Emily Schuhmacher

Future Plans: I want to go into music as a career and want to go to school in the Chicago area. I am hoping to study sound production or composition. I would also like to continue playing my violin and viola as a soloist or in an ensemble.

Associate School: Friess Lake Favorite Class: CAPP Spanish-the learning activities are fun and easy to understand as well as helpful so I can use them in the future.

Favorite thing about HUHS: Teachers. All of the teachers I have had since my first year have been very energetic and excited to teach. I have enjoyed learning from them and have been able to ask them for help if I need it.

Activities: I play in the orchestra and have been a part of the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra for five years and the Wisconsin School Music Association’s State Honors Orchestra.

Victor is an incredible young musician who performs as the HUHS Concertmaster -a position he has held for 3.5 years. Not only is Victor an incredible young musical artist, but he is also very passionate about learning, coachable, and a team player who strives to achieve excellence. Victor is a true young professional who inspires others through his charismatic and serving leadership. ~ Andy Hacker

Friess Lake School

District Report Cards

At Friess Lake, students and teachers work diligently to continuously inspire, persevere, and grow. In reference to our 2017-2018 school year report card, Friess Lake School was rated Significantly Exceeds Expectations! Further, regarding student achievement, Friess Lake students were scored well above the state average in the areas of English Language Arts and Math achievement.

Our English Language Arts student achievement growth is largely attributed to years of professional learning our teachers have participated in. Much of this professional learning has been around the teaching strategies of Reader’s and Writer’s workshop. Workshop strategies enable teachers to engage students in learning key skills and concepts that match their grade-level standards around topics of their interest. Additionally, workshop ensures students get consistent feedback from their teacher as well as student peers.

Another highlight of the Friess Lake School report card worth noting is our attendance rate. Our teachers and students have worked to develop a unique family environment in our school.

The Friess Lake family (staff, students, and families) celebrate, on a regular basis, all of the inspiring achievements our students and staff accomplish. Our frequent acknowledgments and celebrations of student strengths make Friess Lake a place where students and staff want to inspire, persevere, and grow together! Our students take a great sense of pride and ownership in our school! Friess Lake Elementary is a great place to be!

Summer School

Academic Performance Richfield Middle School continued to build on its strong tradition of academic performance during the 2017-18 school year. In English Language Arts and Math the district outperformed the state average by over 20 points on a 100-point scale. A new reading and writing curriculum contributed to the high performance for all students.

Growth Despite an already strong report card, students at Richfield Middle School showed incredible growth from 2016-17 to 2017-18. Strong core curricular programs and leadership from the math and reading specialists contributed to a staff that is well-versed in moving students forward in their learning.

Closing Achievement Gaps Richfield Middle School also made strong gains in the area of Closing Achievement Gaps. Students in under-represented groups performed significantly better in reading and math from 2016-17 to 2017-18. Fine-tuned intervention programs, teacher training, and and update to our schedule helped us grow in this area.

The Holy Hill Area School District is excited to offer summer school to all students in the local community. Classes will be held on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 8:00 - 11:00 am at Richfield Middle School. The summer school session runs from June 24th - August 2nd. The HHASD is also proud to partner with the Kettle Moraine YMCA to provide summer camp, before-school, and after-school care. Look for the HHASD brochure in February. Motivational Monday

Our staff is excited to share Motivation Monday with our students and families!

Motivation Monday’s are how we provide the drive for our students to make each day and week the best day and week of their lives until the next. Every Monday, all students and staff members gather in the gym, we introduce a character trait theme each month, students model what this looks like through skits, and we discuss types of behavior staff will be looking to acknowledge throughout the week. Each Monday students who seek opportunities to display outstanding character will be recognized through a cheer from the student body, the paparazzi will capture a picture to be published in our commons area, and they will get a personalized Friess Lake Elementary School locker tag!

students participate in “Arts and Community Education(ACE).” ACE is a program that teaches students music and movement frequently in their classroom activities.

Movie Night Students can’t get enough of school as they have fun with teachers and friends during a Friday night movie.

School kicked off the basketball season in style with Raider Madness. The student body cheered on the boy’s and girl’s basketball teams as they competed in pep rally competitions. Students won raffle prizes and battled the teachers in games.

LEGO Robotics The Richfield Middle School Lego Robotics team trained hard at the start of the school year to get ready for its annual competition. Students were challenged to design a robot that would complete a series of tasks correctly. The group sent several teams to the competition at Marquette High and the they all performed admirably.

Winter Concert Our first ever concert in the Holy Hill

Area School District was spectacular. Students in the band and orchestra played tunes from around the world. The concert was a great kickoff to the holiday season and every one had a wonderful time.

Spelling Bee In late December, students at Richfield

Middle School participated in the Spelling Bee. Students and families attended and cheered on their peers as they faced off to crown the new champion. The next steps for our winner are the regional and state bees. We’re proud of our spellers.

Geography Bee Richfield Middle School hosted its annual

National Geographic Geography Bee. Students from grades 5-8 participated as the whole school cheered them on. Our school winner will progress to the state competition.

Holy Hill Area School District (HHASD) Tax Increase to Prior Friess Lake School District Taxpayers The Friess Lake (FL) and Richfield Joint No. 1 (RJ1) school districts consolidated on 7/1/18. The decision to consolidate was based on an analysis of the benefits to the students of the districts, feedback from community events and a survey, and a financial analysis. The consolidation results in a tax levy decrease for the RJ1 parent district residents and an increase for residents of the FL parent district. The tax increase impacting FL residents results primarily from consolidation with a larger district and historically low taxes due to payoff of prior debt and declining enrollment over the last decade (enrollment went from 320 to 170 students).

The chart below illustrates a sampling of homes and the tax implications mentioned above. Note: taxes are significantly less than the high over the last decade and are considerably lower than many nearby communities.

While the mill rate has increased since consolidation, the Holy Hill Area School District is now positioned to maintain and even increase program offerings, attract and retain quality teachers, and provide opportunities for our children with a wide range of academic and social needs. This mill rate is projected to decline over the next few years based on continued declining enrollment. A high performing, fiscally responsible school district is important to the stability and growth of our community and will positively impact property values in the long term. School Board Elections - April 2019

The Friess Lake School District and the Richfield Joint School District No. 1 began formally pursuing consolidation during the 2016/17 school year, with a large community meeting held in January 2017. In 2017, both original districts passed a resolution order to reorganize via consolidation. This Order to Reorganize by method of consolidation was approved by DPI on April 5, 2018. This resulted in the current board configuration as described below:

• Board will be composed of seven members • Board will be composed of five members at large, and one apportioned seat from each parent district • First board election to be held in April 2018 Due to discussion between the former boards prior to consolidation, the district began working with an attorney after the April 2018 election regarding how to reduce the board from seven members to five members. The state statutory provision that covers the method for changing the election plan for school board members is 120.02. Our initial request was to move from seven-to-five members in a single year; however, we were advised differently per State Statute 120.02(3)(e). Given the statutory language, we were advised that to move from a seven-to-five member board, the process would take two years, moving from seven-to-six members in 2019, and from six-to-five members in 2020. As a result of this, a resolution was heard and approved by the electors at the HHASD Annual Meeting in October to follow the legal advice and State Statutes as described above. This process was also recently confirmed and validated by the Wisconsin Elections Commission.

Concurrently, the board also drafted a resolution to be considered by the Wisconsin Association of School Board members.

This resolution was selected to be heard by the Wisconsin Association of School Boards’ Delegate Assembly this month.

In order to prevent other districts from facing this same issue of an even-numbered board in the future, the resolution is to allow the reduction of more than one School Board member in a district within a single year. If the resolution is passed, it will become the official lobbying position of the Wisconsin Association of School Boards, but will not change the statutory requirements set forth in State Statute 120.02 until the legislature and governor agree to such a change.

So what does this mean for the Holy Hill Area School District today? We have created the table at right as a visual explanation of the board make-up.

“This year, the students of the musical raised money for two charities. In Little Shop of Horrors, Audrey is abused by her boyfriend. While the musical makes light of this situation, the

students felt that they needed to take this opportunity to assist women who find themselves in abusive situations and to work to curb violence against women. During the first weekend, the students collected $580 in donations from the audience for the Sojourner Peace Center in Milwaukee Wisconsin (pictured). It is a safe place for abused women. During the second weekend, the students collected $750 in donations from the audience for the LOVE>hate project in Hartford Wisconsin. This project is working to curb male violence against women. The students presented checks to both organizations.” Shelia Parker, HUHS Musical Advisor.

I really like Hartford and all the people I’ve met here, everyone is very kind and nice to me.

My host family is the best; I couldn’t ask for a better one! We’ve been together only 4 months but for me they already are my second family. My sister is first of all one of my best friends here and I love spending time with her (Miranda Parker). I found a lot of friends here. I’m on the dance team and I love spending time with them. I love dancing, I started when I was 3. We partcipated in several competitions and I had a lot of fun.

I was also part of the cast in the musical “Little Shop Of Horrors”. I think that was the best experience I have ever had here. All the people in the cast are a second family for me now, and performing in front of a lot of people every night was just amazing. I also had my first and last homecoming of my life and it was just so beautiful. I had a very good time. I also visited New York and Chicago with my family, and I totally fell in love with NY!

My name is Phattharawan Nimchanasit but I go by June.

I am from Thailand and a Junior. Back home, I live with my parents and 1 younger brother who’s 12 yrs. old. I like adventures, traveling and playing sports. At school in Thailand, I don’t have much time to play sports because we have to learn very hard and have to learn a special study after school. At HUHS I joined the Bowling club and Forensics. It was very fun because I got to know a lot of people and they are very nice and friendly to me. I really like the classes I’m taking here. Since I’ve been in the USA, I have been to many places: Pennsylvania, New York and Chicago. It was very fun to travel and see a lot of beautiful places. Since I have been here, I really like my family, my friends, food and people; everyone is very nice to me. I have been doing a lot of activities and going to many places; rock climbing, paddle boarding, jet skiing, apple picking, and a water park.

The thing that surprised me is the weather -it’s very cold but I really like the snow.

I arrived in Hartford on August 3. I have been here almost five months and I did a lot of things. First of all, I was on the Tennis varsity team, where I met a lot of good friends. We created really good relationships and we shared lots of moments together. The last time I played tennis was in October, when I ended my last game in Sectionals. It was one of the funnest things that I did here and it helped me get to know a lot of people. When the season was over I decided to be on the ski team, but it was too cold for me so I quit.

During all this time I made wonderful experiences with my host family and I had a lot of fun. I went to New York and Chicago with them, we cut a Christmas tree, we ate a lot of good Italian food and will be going on a ski trip to Michigan. I can’t wait!

I’m glad that I can experience life in real American high school and in US. Some things I have been doing during my time here are; Rotary orientation in Green Lake in September, tennis in September, and had a great time with the group and coaches. Rotary trip to Chicago in December, homecoming activities and dance. With my host family I have been ice skating in Milwaukee.

I experienced and enjoyed my first Halloween and Thanksgiving and went on a trip to Florida and a skiing trip up north. I look forward to getting to know my second host family and experiencing more new things.

Our community partners represent partnerships that are mutually supportive, and for which we are deeply grateful.

Hartford Union High School is extremely excited to be starting a Best Buddies Club.

Best Buddies creates 1:1 friendship matches of students with an intellectual or developmental disability (IDD), the “Buddy”, to a student without an IDD, the “Peer Buddy”.

The club is led by a team of student officers and two staff advisors. The student officers will plan and coordinate monthly events which allow the friendship matches to do something together. In December, a cookie decorating party to get to know one another. That party helped form relationships to help the officers and advisors decide who would be “buddies” with who. We had our kick-off event Match Party on January 21st. At the match party, the 1:1 friendship matches of Buddy and Peer Buddy were revealed.

Teacher Spotlight Pete Kelly

Jeff Martin This is my 18th year of teaching Social Studies at HUHS. I currently teach Sociology, Intro to Psychology and AP Psychology. I enjoy helping students learn more about themselves and the world around them. It is especially rewarding to see students have moments of success after weeks, months, and years of hard work and determination.

Outside of school, I enjoy cheering on my favorite teams, yard work, and coaching my kids in various sports. I coach my kids in soccer, basketball and baseball. Our family enjoys taking road trips. Recent travels include Florida and New York City. We also enjoy spending family time each summer in Door County.

This is my 21st year of teaching and my 19th at HUHS. I love a lot of different things about teaching. But one of the best elements of the profession is simply the day to day interactions with the students themselves. Strip away the content that we teach, it’s truly enjoyable just interacting with the kids inside and outside of the classroom. I’m really lucky, though, that I love history and I get to work with students in that world on a day to day basis. Seeing kids make historical and modern connections is a rewarding experience that keeps me going through the years. Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with my wife and three children. While I don’t have any really unique or interesting hobbies, our family tries to take a trip each year and visit some areas that have interesting history to them. In recent years we’ve traveled to Washington D.C. New York, Nashville, St. Louis, and Roanoke, North Carolina. I love a wide variety of sports and still try to remain as active as possible through coaching track at HUHS, playing and coaching soccer with my kids, and running (when motivated).

Demonstrations, experiments and hands-on activities for all ages! Enter through the main lobby and smell the sweet aroma of cakes, cookies or others treats created by our Culinary Arts students.

If you are hungry for dinner, our Band Booster Parents will have a variety of soups for sale with the proceeds going to the HUHS Band Program. Our AgriScience class is also hosting a bake sale.

Parents and community members can view the latest updates at the school as well as learn about our cocurricular activities and sports. We call it an “Academic and Activity Extravaganza!”

World Languages French classes will be making crepes and Spanish classes will be serving up quesadillas English Department will show how students can get involved in Mock Trial, Model UN, Forensics and the School Newspaper “The Hartford Chronicle.”

Learn about the school store – The Birdhouse. Students can work at the store and apply what they have learned in class to create an experience that helps them in real world job experience.

Interested in Music? Music Department’s Band, Orchestra and Choir will be entertaining us throughout the building.
