Consolidation Updates


A Message From Our

BOARD PRESIDENT & SUPERINTENDENT Dear HUHS Community, Welcome to the 2017 – 2018 school year! This year is an important year for both planning and action. First, our planning includes developing our Strategic Plan (2020: Create Our Future!) by December for Board review and approval. Then, taking action in January to begin implementing it and achieving its goals. We will have 3 – 5 goals that will guide the District for three years, January 2018 – December 2020.

Second, we are developing a Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) for facility/grounds improvements, as well as a plan for non-capital items. The CIP framework was presented to the Board on October 30, and it will be completed by March, which will include ranking by needs, cost estimates, and timelines. As part of the CIP, the Board approved replacement of a major section of the building’s fire alarm system, as well as issuing RFPs for the renovation of our small gym. Both items are at the top of the needs list. Third, after much planning this summer, we launched a schoolwide literacy initiative to positively impact student academic achievement in every area. A core team of three teachers with expertise and passion for literacy lead a supportive team of 10 – 14 faculty. We are infusing literacy skills, tactics, strategies, etc., across the curriculum, as well as academic language used in standardized tests (e.g., ACT).

Finally, we are taking a “deep dive” into teacher evaluation using the highly regarded and researched Danielson Framework for Teaching. Faculty and Administration are receiving training in the Framework in six professional development days, and Administrators and Department Chairs are also being trained in how to use the Framework for observation, informing best practices, and evaluation. Friess Lake School 2017 School Wide Summer Reading Program

Fuel Up to Play 60 Kickoff Students at Friess Lake held the Fuel Up to Play 60 Kickoff to promote physical activity, sponsored by the NFL. Friess Lake received grant funds to intoduce this program.

Friess Lake School recently celebrated the success of participating in the school wide 2017 Summer Reading Program. Students who read over the summer and turned in their completed forms were rewarded with their choices of books, posters, and other prizes! Middle School students were also treated to a “Congratulations!” pizza party.

I’ve had Fitore in Medical Interventions and have her currently in Biomedical Innovation. Fitore always brings a positive attitude to class that is infectious to those around her. She has been working hard in Biomedical Innovation (year 4 PLTW) and AP Biology while being involved in both SMART team and Tennis. She is developing real-world skills that could make her an immediate asset in any lab setting. Sam is the student that walks in every day and asks me how I am doing, and whether or not he really cares, I feel like he does. Sam’s creativity behind the camera is that of a professional. His passion for creating videos and photography that draw in the viewer is second to none for a student that is self-taught. Hartford Finishing/Steel Craft Corp Open GPS Educational Partners Site Pictured above (from left to right): Tristan Dittloff (Hartford Jt. 1), Dylan Kutz, and Holland Martin (Erin)

In August, Hartford Finishing/Steel Craft Corp held the ribbon cutting for the new GPS Educational Partners Site at their Hartford location. This signifies a partnership in education that allows students from local high schools, including HUHS, the opportunity to learn in a unique setting in the Hartford plants and then apply their skills in local manufacturing positions throughout Washington County. Students spend their mornings learning in a hands-on classroom, lead by a GPS instructor. Based on their strengths and skills, they then complete various rotations in positions throughout the site in which they are employed. This gives them the opportunity to learn in a setting where they are free from distractions and learning materials that are relevant to the positions that they are working in the afternoon. The on-the-job rotations allow them to experience various positions throughout each manufacturing site. The companies below are all employing students from HUHS through the GPS program. Thank you to GPS and all of the manufacturing companies in our community for giving our students this opportunity.

Culinary Arts 1 & 2 covers basic preparation of all different types of foods. Students create culinary cuisine from all food groups, while practicing a variety of cooking methods, and learning how to garnish and present a plate professionally.

Culinary Arts 3 is a year-long course where the focus is on serving guests. Students have the opportunity to experiment and taste-test food, and share their food at one of the events that we cater in the Hartford community. Students in this class also have many surprise lab challenges, like you might find on the Food Network, where they get to show off their talents and creativity! Culinary Arts 4 looks at the hospitality industry from the managerial perspective. One of the primary goals in the class is to run the events that the Culinary Arts 3 students serve food at. This provides our students a real-world opportunity to oversee an event and do employee evaluations. Additionally, the students get to prepare a variety of desserts, baked goods, and international cuisine.

Parenting

Parenting class introduces students to responsible nurturing, basic applications of child development theory, prenatal care and development, heredity and environmental factors with regards to children. There is an emphasis on responsibilities of parents, readiness for parenting, and the influence parents have on children while providing care and guidance.

Child Care Services & Independent Study

Child Care Services is a two-hour blocked course that prepares students for work in the child care field. Students are able to earn their Assistant Child Care Teacher, Shaken Baby and Infant/Toddler certifications. A second level of Child Care Services (Child Care Independent Study) allows senior students to earn their Child Care Teacher certification. Students in this course may receive credit through Moraine Park Technical College.

Personal Style & Design

Teachers

Personal Style and Design is a semester course where students will learn about fashion design, interior design, and cosmetology. Students demonstrate their individual styles using the elements and principles of design.

Health & Human Service Careers

Health and Human Service Careers is a semester course in which students identify careers in healthcare and human services fields through career exploration, personality profiles, and guest speakers.

The vital task of preparing students to become citizens in a democracy is complex. The Social Studies disciplines are diverse, encompassing an expansive range of potential content. This content engages students in a comprehensive process of confronting multiple dilemmas, and encourages students to speculate, think critically, and make personal and civic decisions on information from multiple perspectives. Social Studies prepares students for their postsecondary futures, including the disciplinary practices and literacies needed for college-level work in social studies academic courses, and the critical thinking, problem solving, and collaborative skills needed for the workplace. This Hartford Union High School Social Studies Department encourages the development of academic skills that support students in (1) developing questions and planning inquiries; (2) applying disciplinary concepts and tools; (3) evaluating sources and using evidence; and (4) communicating conclusions and taking informed action. Each of these components represents skills that students will use in their roles as students, employees, and most importantly as informed and engaged citizens of the world.

AP Psychology/AP Biology Bundle

To kick off a unit on world history, the World Cultures classes went outside to construct a timeline of the history of the earth. Students had to calculate how many years each yard was equivalent to (45 million), so the timeline showed the correct relation between events. Students were amazed to realize all of written human history was the width of a piece of paper! Last year students in freshmen cohort (freshmen bundle) were tasked with creating a museum of human history. The students toured the Milwaukee Public Museum and then designed their own exhibits at the high school. The entire museum was on display at the HUHS Showcase in February.

Humanities Bundle (Civics & Modern American History)

Students in the AP Psychology/AP Biology bundle combine the concepts in both courses through lab work, lectures, and course discussions. Holly Beske (Hartford Jt. 1) works with AP Psychology Teacher Terry Wick to create a genetic mutation in a model of the eye to form improvements in vision. Sophomores in AP Government have the opportuinity to compete in the We the People competition each year. Last winter, the team made it to the State Competition and took 3rd Place at State.

HUHS Athletic Training Program Earns Safe Sports School Title

Hartford Union High School is the recipient of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Safe Sports School award for its HUHS Athletics and Athletic Training program. The award champions safety and recognizes secondary schools that provide safe environments for student athletes. The award reinforces the importance of providing the best level of care, injury prevention, and treatment. Student Athletes, Athletic Training Staff, and Student Athletic Trainers pose with the new Safe Sports School Banner Athletic Trainer Bryana Kudek accepts an award from Dr. Weninger and Josh Schoemann The Athletic Training Department and Hartford Fire and Rescue held a combined training drill in August for HUHS Coaches

HUHS Athletic Trainer, Bryana Kudek, led the charge for the school to achieve this honor. With her application, and then receiving a grant from the Great Lakes Athletic Trainers Association (GLATA), she has been able to carry out the programming necessary to make this happen. Congratulations to our Athletic Training Program for making us a safe sports school!

Cross Country Grade School Challenge The HUHS Cross Country Team hosted the annual Grade School Cross Country Challenge on Friday, October 6, 2017. This year the challenge was held behind the school, and 190 runners competed for a number of awards and in various activities.

HUHS Joins the North Shore Conference Last year the state realigned the conferences in the WIAA. This realignment shifted HUHS to the new North Shore Conference. This fall was our first season as part of the North Shore Conference.

At the Freshmen Jumpstart orientation program, the Class of 2021 participated in The Kindness Rocks program. They painted and left inspiring messages on rocks to be placed around the community. During the week of Homecoming, Student Council placed those rocks around the Hartford community to continue the spirit of kindness. If you find a rock in the community, take a picture and post to Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram with #HartfordRocks. Then find a new special place for that rock to brighten someone else’s day.

Powder Puff Football Game Sponsored by Student Council The annual Powder Puff Football games were held on Wednesday, September 27 at Gib Mahr Field. The sophomores beat the freshmen and the seniors came out on top after a tough fight with the juniors. Above all, $1,430.35 was collected for the Hartford Food Pantry and 500 items were collected for donation. Thank you to our Student Council for organizing a great event!

Coaches VS Cancer On Friday, September 8, HUHS Football played Slinger in the annual Coaches VS Cancer game. This was the 7th annual game that took HUHS on the road to Slinger this year. Donations poured in from individuals and businesses throughout the Hartford and Slinger communities. The remembrance game began in memory of Slinger Coach Kevin Wilkinson who suffered from colon cancer and organized the first fund raising event between the rival schools back in 2011. This year the Wilkinson-Redders Memorial Trophy was created, adding in the memory of HUHS Coach John Redders’ father who passed away last season. HUHS came out victorious in the football game, 24-21, and $12,483.71 was raised for the American Cancer Society. Dig Pink - SideGirls Out Foundation Volleyball On Wednesday, October 4, the Girls Volleyball team played to support the Side Out Foundation that funds breast cancer research while encouraging teamwork and support for those that are fighting the disease. The team worked to raise $785.50 through various raffles and silent auction baskets.

Our Talented People Connie Darin

Student Services Project Coordinator

Ms. Connie Darin is celebrating her 12th year with us at HUHS. She graduated from Western Michigan University with a Biology degree and worked at the Medical College of WI for many years as a research laboratory technologist in the Physiology Department. After marrying an HUHS alum, she was blessed to raise three boys, spending a few years at home and many more on the bleachers. Upon joining HUHS, she worked in the Library Media Center for 10-years, trying in vain to read every new book before the students messed them up. Ms. Darin is now our Student Services Project Coordinator, a position that involves working with many different people to implement school events and projects such as the College & Career Fair and Summer School.

Attendance Office Manager

An employee like Connie Darin is hard to find. Her desire to learn and carry out the many tasks her position requires in an efficient and effective way, does not go unnoticed. In addition to her strong work ethic, her quick wit and sense of humor creates an environment that makes it fun to come to work everyday. -Ms. TC Motzkus, Director of Teaching & Learning

Even though Ms. Tammy Rolsma has only been employed at HUHS for the last three years, she has always been an Oriole. Ms. Rolsma is a third generation Oriole and enjoys working with high school students. She started working part-time in the Attendance Office and last year became our fulltime Attendance Office Manager. This year, Ms. Rolsma is also the Assitant Competitive Dance Coach. Outside of the school, Mr. Rolsma is happily married to another HUHS alum and is the mother of three children. She is very active in their activities and our community. She acts as the Secretary on both the Hartford Youth Football Club and the Hartford Baseball Club.

The Attendance Office is the busiest place in the building with many, many moving parts. Tammy Rolsma, as the Attendance Office Manager, wears various hats that include Counselor, Dean, Health Technician, Attendance Czar, Social Worker, Psychologist and the list goes on but the amazing part is she knows when to wear each hat. Tammy has numerous qualities but some of her best are compassionate, confident, respectful, multi-tasker, fun and optimistic. Tammy does an amazing job here at HUHS and we are truly blessed and lucky to have her. -Mr. Scott Otto, Dean of Students


Dear Community Members: It is now official! On July 1, 2018, the school districts of Friess Lake and Richfield will merge together into the Holy Hill Area School District. Over the course of this year, each School Board will continue to hold regular meetings and conduct regular business. In addition, we will hold monthly joint board meetings to begin laying the foundation for the new district. There is much work to be done. Our unofficial theme throughout this process is that we will be “Stronger Together.” It is perfectly natural to feel a sense of loss. As leaders of both districts, we recognize this, and feel it ourselves. Though we will be actively working to create a new culture and community, each of our districts will hold some individual events throughout the year to celebrate and commemorate the rich history each has enjoyed. We are filled with a sense of excitement for the future. We will hold a number of events designed to begin the process of merging the two district communities into one. As leaders of both districts, we are fully committed to making this work, and believe that it is in the long-term best interests of the students, staff, and community. Stronger Together. We chose each other and we chose this path. Now, we’re equal partners in building a brand new district. We will look to incorporate the best of both and to improve on the best of both. The second joint inservice will be November 22, 2017, at Richfield Eleementary School. On this day, Richfield School District staff hope to return the same warm welcome they received from the Friess Lake Staff during the September inservice. Staff will tour the facility and expand the mission work to values setting. All three consolidation teams will meet to continue forward planning.

What is going to happen to Plat School? The proposal is for Friess Lake to service students in 4K4th grade, Richfield to service students in 5th-8th grade, and close Plat. A Joint Board committee has been created to determine the future of the current Plat School.

Cultural/Social Team Goals: Cultural: Form a new, strong, positive culture together. Social: Coordinate events for students, staff, and the community. Ideas include, but are not limited to: Camp Minikani, penpals, school visits, Fuel Up to Play 60 events (Jack-O-Lantern Jog), end of the year picnic (celebration of year and rev up for new year), open gym, various challenges/team-building events, and crossover Movie Nights and Dances.)

School Board Elections - April 2018 Though consolidation will occur in July 2018, there are school board positions that will expire in April, requiring elections for a short, three-month term in order to complete the remainder of the 2017-18 school year in each original school district.

Five seats at large (from either Friess Lake or Richfield) that will make up the new Holy Hill Area School District, after July 1, 2018.

Our Students, Working Together Already GRANT OVERVIEW

Our student leaders have already started working together. This year, they applied for the AODA mini grant to combat bullying, promote suicide prevention, and focus on positive self-esteem. The students at Richfield and Friess Lake school plan to work together to develop an environment where all students are happy, healthy, and feel safe. All of the activities that students are planning will address these issues by building strong friendships, understanding each other and the issues, and giving people the tools to handle these problems.

COLLABORATION

Middle school students were asked by administrators to participate on the grant writing team. The students from each school district met four times via Google Hangouts. After meeting, many ideas were discussed among these students, including dances, movies, class/community speakers and creative monthly events. Students on the committee discussed the ideas with fellow peers, getting the word out throughout all of the Richfield and Friess Lake school communities.

GOAL

This grant will address issues such as bullying, building self-esteem, and suicide prevention.

HUHS Faculty & Students Vote Brandon Strupp, DAR Good Citizen Brandon Strupp (Hartford Jt. 1) has been selected as the HUHS DAR Good Citizen for the Class of 2018. Brandon was nominated by the faculty and then selected by his peers for exhibiting the characteristics of a DAR Good Citizen: dependability, service, leadership and patriotism. This honor includes a scholarship opportunity; Brandon’s application and essay will be submitted to the local DAR Chapter for consideration. Congratulations on your achievement Brandon!
