Dear HUHS Community, It’s spring! After the winter we’ve had this year, most of us are eager to spring into a new season of warm, bright sunny days and shades of green to replace the gray, white, and brown that are the colors of a cold Wisconsin winter. While the early spring outside may still look a little dull, we have a lot of bright and exciting things happening inside HUHS and our area schools!

We are a school community that came together and spent months in the search and interview process for our next Superintendent. Thank you to all for your engagement and involvement in the process. We are excited to announce the search is completed and Mr. Jeff Walters will be the Superintendent of HUHS on July 1, 2019! Mr. Walters is currently the Principal at Kettle Moraine High School. He brings a student-focused, teamwork mentality, innovative ideas on education for every student, strengths in bringing people together and empowering them, a strong work ethic, and deep family and community values. Please welcome Jeff Walters and the Walters family to the HUHS community and look for future opportunities to meet him. Attila and Jeff are communicating frequently, sharing ideas, and will be working together to ensure a smooth transition.

The spring HUHS school board election has been completed and certified. Congratulations to Craig Westfall and Tina Pridemore! We appreciate all that ran in the election for school board and participated in our first-ever, student-led candidate forum prior to the election. We also wish to thank Bill Savage for his years of service on the HUHS Board of Education.

Hartford Area Schools

Lincoln Elementary has always had a proud history of being a community school in Hartford. In 2018, a Lincoln staff member, Mrs. Neumeyer, proposed an idea to nurture the school–community relationship. Students receiving Lion Eyes tickets for excellent work, behavior or kindness could choose to place the tickets in a raffle for ‘Lunch with the Law’ and winners would be drawn during the monthly Lion Eyes assembly.

Chief Groves and the Hartford Police Department embraced the opportunity and sends one or two officers for lunch with the winners.

‘Lunch with the Law’ was such a great experience that Chief Stephans and the Hartford Fire and Rescue Department are also participating in the opportunity. ‘Eat with an EMT’ and ‘Feast with a Firefighter’ are now options for students’ monthly drawings.

These school-community programs have been a smashing success and the Hartford Jt. #1 School District is very grateful for the support from our first responders.

St. Gabriel Catholic School has a new Education Center!! Our new school was designed with a state-of-the-art STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Lab which complements our fully accredited K4-8 curriculum. The STEM Lab serves as a designated space to generate both inspiration and exploration as students design, experiment, build, and create. This multi-discipline approach provides students with opportunities for creativity, critical thinking, and problem solving, while adhering to the Catholic Social Teachings. Developing students with 21st Century skills is the ultimate goal. The lab will exercise curiosity, imagination, self-confidence, problem-solving skills, and collaboration. By exposing students to STEM concepts and giving them opportunities to explore these concepts, students will get the chance to develop a passion for science, technology, engineering, and math, and hopefully pursue careers in these related fields. In addition to our new school’s STEM program, St. Gabriel School has the following spiritual, academic and extracurricular opportunities to offer students in their educational and personal development, • We partner with you in the faith formation of your children. Catholic Faith Formation is the cornerstone of our learning activities. Catholic doctrine, prayer and social teaching is integrated through religion classes and throughout the day.

• We have student-led weekly Masses.

• Music, art, physical education, and Spanish classes are offered each week, while health class is offered during first semester.

• Our Before and After School Learning Programs are available for all families who choose to participate.

• Extracurricular activities include boys and girls basketball, volleyball, track, forensics, scouts, instrument lessons, chess club, LEGO club, and community service opportunities.

Future Plans: I have no idea what I would like to do later in life. Although, I know for a fact that I would like to attend at least a 4-year college and earn at least a bachelors degree, in whatever my major is.

Associate School: Richfield Favorite Class: My favorite class at HUHS is probably Honors Geometry, although, COHORT is a close second.

Favorite thing about HUHS: I really like all the new people I have met this year. I also love the variety of classes offered at HUHS. Activities: I am in a plethora of activities. These activities are: Basketball, DECA, Baseball, Leadership Team, and FBLA. It’s clear from the moment Tony enters the classroom that he has a passion for learning because he is always excited about and engaged in the material. He asks great questions to deepen both his and his classmates’ understanding of course content.

Tony is a polite, respectful and hardworking student who always strives to do his best. His positive attitude and love of learning make him a joy to have in class! ~ Sara Sturm

Activities at HUHS: Football and wrestling Denis is an inquisitive student who works well with everyone.

Future Plans: In the future I want to attend college to study music education and receive my piano pedagogy certificate so that I can become a high school band director and a professional piano lesson teacher.

Associate School: Central Favorite Class: My favorite class is Band. I play six instruments and compose music, so I always have a constant desire to be in the band room where I can be surrounded by music.

Favorite thing about HUHS: The variety of classes available to take based on interest. I will have the opportunity to be taking four music classes next year, which will help me prepare for my college and career interests. It’s so cool that while I’m in high school, I have the opportunity to take classes in order to study what I’m most passionate about, which is something a lot of young adults won’t be able to do until college.

Activities: I participate in the HUHS Symphonic Band, Jazz Band, Pit Orchestra, Student Council, and National Honors Society.

Elizabeth is involved a wide variety of activities at HUHS, ranging from Student Council to National Honor Society. She displays a positive attitude and treats staff members and peers with a high level of respect. ~ Michael Schmidt

Her Spanish skills have grown immensely over the past year, and she even attended a World Languages and Careers Academy at UW Oshkosh during the summer. Library Media Library Media Center (LMC) is a central hub for many resources. It serves over 400 students a day as well as teachers, parents and community members. It’s welcoming, quiet, and multi-functional. What it doesn’t do is run itself.

Michelle Yu, Library Media Specialist and Dani Klink, Library Media Assistant, are the organizers that keep the LMC running smoothly.

Dani supervises students during Flex time, Resource period and study halls. She categorizes books, checks out books for students and has an extensive design background and helps students with Adobe Creative Suite.

Michelle and Dani help students and staff with several resources that are available in the LMC such as cameras, tripods, green screens, computer programs, books, and e-books, and so much more.

Michelle also supervises students during Flex time, Resource Period and study halls, is a homeroom teacher, and teaches students research skills with print and digital resources. She is also part of the literacy initiative team which professionally develops teachers in integrating literacy in all facets of their lessons. Additionally, she is the tech literacy point person to make sure we’re meeting state standards.

Outside of our library, Michelle works with the public library to help with programming and is on the Friends of the Library Board. She is a member of the Strategic Plan Goal Team 4, Master Facilities Plan and is the Adviser for both Peers 4 Peers and Creatif.

Tech Services Technology Services is a collaborative and strategic partner that exists to support HUHS goals, operations, and adopted curriculum. Technology is a tool to enhance the educational experience for both the student and teacher, and to extend the learning process outside of the normal classroom environment.

Technology Services Team includes a three person staff: Help Desk Specialist, IT Operations Specialist, and Technology Services Supervisor. The technology team supports students, teachers, and staff with all technology related issues. Jordan Wald, Help Desk Specialist This summer the Technology Services Team has a big project to Jonathan Hostad, IT Operations Specialist complete: upgrading technology infrastructure of cabling, network equipment, and future phone systems. The work began at the beginning of April and will continue over the summer months with an expected finish by the beginning of school. The technology team is a dedicated team with a combined experience of fifty years in the information services field.

Spring Play This Pulitzer Prize-winning play is a classic, funny, thoughtful, important slice-of-life story of two families and the neighbors who surround them.

Thornton Wilder, a Wisconsin native, penned this play to be so timeless that it was recently revived on Broadway and its messages are still relevant today!

Parent-Community Survey Hartford Union High School recently completed a strategic planning process which involved a team of 30 stakeholders. This group reviewed school performance data, participated in focus groups and then developed the following goals.

Goal 1: Career, College, and Life Readiness Achievement Students will meet Career, College and Life Readiness Achievement benchmarks.

Goal 2: HUHS will be viewed as the community’s “high school of choice” Goal 3: Engagement of All Stakeholders HUHS will increase each stakeholder group’s engagement and satisfaction.

Respond by May 6th!

Goal 4: Master Facilities Plan Develop a master facility plan for the school buildings and grounds.

Using these goals as a planning framework, we are seeking your input on this community-wide survey to help us answer three important questions: 1) What are we doing well?

2) Where do we need to adjust and focus more resources?

Day of Service Hartford Union High School’s Day of Service will be held on Thursday, May 23rd.

In this time of school accountability focused mainly on test scores, the staff of HUHS have considered our philosophy and envisioned what we want to see our students achieve. We have claimed our mission, which is to engage and support all learners to discover their passions, achieve high academic goals, and contribute to a global society. It is our belief that students should reach beyond their school walls to explore their passions and give back to the community.

The entire student body and staff, approximately 1,450 people, will be participating in this day. Some of the projects planned include cleaning up park trails, reading to elementary school students, playing games with senior citizens, and beautifying Hartford. Projects are planned with the goal of contributing to the positive spirit of our community.

We are excited and committed to this annual event with the community’s support. We are planning forward with the hope that we inspire our youth to continue their service after graduation. Hartford Union High School is extremely excited to be in the start-up year of a Best Buddies Club. Best Buddies creates 1:1 friendship matches of students with an intellectual or developmental disability (IDD), the “Buddy,” to a student without an IDD, the “Peer Buddy.” Best Buddies was started 30 years ago, but is new to HUHS. The club is led by a team of student officers and two staff advisors. The student officers plan and coordinate monthly events which allow the friendship matches to do something together. Our kick-off event was our match party on Monday, January 21. At the match party, the 1:1 friendship matches of Buddy and Peer Buddy were revealed.

Our first club activity was a movie night at HUHS in which buddies and their Peer Buddies could enjoy Incredibles 2, while having popcorn and soda. The mother of one of our Buddies sent a text message to the Peer Buddy asking if she would send her a selfie because her daughter had never gone anywhere with a friend before. That’s what Best Buddies is about. Other recent activities included tubing at the Rock Snow Park in Franklin, as well as attending the Best Buddies All Chapter

On March 6th, we had an all school assembly with a guest speaker talking on the subject of inclusion and how in a perfect world we wouldn’t need Best Buddies because everyone would be included. It was a powerful message for our students to hear. Our only real fundraiser to date has been printing and selling Best Buddies t-shirts.

Our next event will be the Best Buddies Chapter Brewer’s game on Tuesday, April 16, followed by the Friendship Walk in Milwaukee, May 4th.

Staff Spotlight Tammy Paquette Attendance Office

Tammy Paquette has worked for HUHS for over 19 years in various capacities. She started as a study hall supervisor then also helped out as supervising the lunchroom and detentions. She would check the parking lot cars for passes and for six weeks worked with the Special Education Students which included helping them in the dish room when they washed dishes. Tammy remembers walking around to every classroom every hour to collect attendance sheets before it was electronic.

Currently, Tammy works in the Attendance Office, still doing a variety of daily tasks: entering absences into attendance, passes for students who need to leave school, 18 year old permission cards, paperwork for field trips and co-curricular events, ring bells on non-normal school days, and she helps out in the Health room and secured entrance.

“I love the job in the attendance office most of all because I get to interact with students and parents.” Tammy has four grown children, two of which went through HUHS, and eight grandchildren. “I love spending time with my grandchildren whenever possible. They are my life!”

You're Appreciated!

Cathy Feutz & Becky Hadley Secure Entrance

The smiling, friendly faces you first see when entering HUHS during school hours are Cathy Feutz and Becky Hadley. They take your ID, register you, give you a name tag, and buzz you in through the secure entrance, but that’s not all they do.

Cathy and Becky remember a lot of names and faces. They maintain checks and balances of all students coming and going, necessary in the case of an evacuation, they make sure all students are accounted for. They also create the truancy reports.

Deliveries, medication drop offs, forgotten items, you name it, it goes through Cathy and Becky. The secure entrance is so busy sometimes, they need help to get people through.

In the morning when Becky arrives, she helps find subs for teachers that are sick that day. She also helps out the cocurricular office by creating certificates for them.

In the afternoon when Cathy is in, she creates the truancy reports and helps assign students to resource. She also finds subs throughout the day and for future unfilled positions. Cathy also assists the Attendance and Counseling Offices with a variety of tasks.

They enjoy helping people and directing them where to go. They have a beautiful view through the windows and get to meet and help a lot of people.

Both are deeply rooted in our community. Becky has worked here since 2015. “I have six children, two who have graduated already, three currently attending HUHS and one in 6th grade”.

Cathy has worked here over 25 years. She began as a student supervisor for study halls and detentions. She also worked in the Counseling Office as a long term sub for the secretary. She also worked in the Attendance Office in various capacities. She has served as the receptionist for approximately the last eight years. “My husband and I attended high school here at HUHS and our 3 children went to school here as well. We love the school and the community.”
