The Hermes visits Volcano Paricutin in Mexico The Alfaro family recently returned from a trip to Mexico, where they vis-
ited Volcano Paricutin, among seeing many other beautiful sights.
Where in the World is The Hermes? It, along with the Alfaro family - Daniella, Adriana, Daniel and Luis Daniel - traveled to Mexico this summer where they visited the historic Volcano Paricutin, among other sites.
The volcano erupted in February 1943. A farmer discovered this while he was attending his corn crop. The man went and warned the village outside of Uruapan, Michoacán. The entire area was soon covered in lava and ash. The only building to survive was the steeple of the church seen in the photo at left; everything else was covered in lava rock. The volcano cinder cone reaches to a height of 1,391 feet today. In 1952, all volcanic activity ceased and it’s now - fortunately a dormant volcano. Volcano Paricutin holds the distinction of being the only volcano on the planet born in modern times. Eruptions from volcanoes are common occurrences but the birth of an entirely new volcano is genuinely rare. The volcano of Paricutin now bears the honor of being listed as one of the world's seven natural wonders.
