The architectural ideas from which my position is born are strongly routed in systems of abstraction and process, but ultimately, evolution. Upon review of my portfolio and archipelago drawing I can reflect on some absolute and recurring concepts, which I want to explore at a new level. Generally, the themes of interconnection, movement, centralisation, urbanism and futurism could be understood as consistent, however, when studying the work in my present mindset I can see how more complex properties are underlying. These include ideas about the criticism of artistic autonomy, the exploration of a vision and an attack on property relations and political borders. I don’t want to limit my position by placing current ideals on past projects to justify them and so I am wary that I must look forward at the same time. I am interested in why people are cynically disengaged from (e)utopian ideas by the apparent realisation of a limit to radical change. I intend on simulating, or visualising how a culture could spread from its most basic influences. From the city centre, I propose the idea of a social condenser, a cultural petri dish from which the seeds of a movement could spread.

Recent blog posts at www.hugohickey.wix.com/archipelago show an extension of these ideas and a re-working of Constant Nieuwenhuiys’ 11 points on New Urbanism which deal closely with themes of interest.

PLEASE DESCRIBE YOUR PROPOSED WORK METHOD GIVING INDICATIVE BUT SPECIFIC MILESTONES WHICH RELATE TO THE STUDIO REVIEW DATES.

Through the abstraction and combination of simple ingredients such as persona, art and place, the baseline for a building’s culture can be generated, in the same way that systems of DNA are the ingredients that make up ours.

There is no reasonable way of simulating the spectrum of potential complexes of culture that could possibly arise from the proposed situationist network. To generate the growth of the network, a society’s influences would have to be pre-existent. The elements from

which a society or culture are formed help it to grow like bacteria from a petri dish. The properties present at its foundation are key to the city’s evolution. In order to simulate this almost parasitic growth from within the city centre I will choose to select a very limited number of influences from which to grow the system’s architecture. Three visual influences, one coming from each of the following categories, would achieve a simple visual simulation; a person(a), a place, and an action/movement. Equally applied abstraction of these influences provides a trail of bread crumbs, making the process of the project’s evolution transparent. If the evolution of an idea can be mapped and traced to its inception, and purest form, then theoretically the project can describe its own DNA, and in turn; that of its culture. In doing this, a building can very literally describe the ingredients and processes that conceived of it.

The first exercise of the thesis is called the Totem phase, whereby a scaled and geometric representation of the culture is generated on a conceptual site.

The second exercise is called the Artifact phase, whereby technology is applied to the totem.

The third phase is the implementation of programming into and around the Artifact.

The fourth phase is the removal of the programmed artifact from incubation, and the contextual installation of the system in the existing context of the city.

The fifth phase is representation of the system in its surroundings.

The sixth and final phase is the dissemination of the process and the total visual simulation of the generated culture.

I believe the key to the dissemination of such a specific process of working must reflect the process itself. The three(or more) influences which would inform the proposed system’s architecture are cross disciplinary in nature, originating from three distinct aspects of culture: the symbolic (a visual ideal), the material (physical manifestation of place) and the cognitive (persona or movement). These elements are only the seeds of the system, the growth of which is informed by the process of abstraction, which is determined by the designer. In order to be dynamic but consistent in the response to a cross-disciplinary combination, it would be vital to employ a cross-disciplinary approach to how the elements are treated as they develop.

In practical terms, the process benefits hugely from a design team of many different backgrounds, who might in turn benefit from seeing the result of a cross-disciplinary process in the form of an exhibition designed for a collaborative arts platform, such as Create Ireland.

In addition, an online and place-specific discussion might work together to foster a small virus and discussion of its own, not dissimilar to that of the situationist movement.

Comparisons are drawn here between Dublin and Venice, a city already flooded, so that I might understand how the urban fabric of the latter overcomes the problem of impenetrable and impassable canals and rivers which cut through the city, much like Dublin's traffic jams and bus corridors.

description: The Central Bank is a highly assertive building with a bold outline and dramatic styling.

It is visible from throughout the city centre but particularly in Temple Bar where narrow streets and gaps between buildings can reveal its strong geometric presence.

It is an unusual building for its time in regard to structure. The floors are all suspended from the twin service cores at 12 support points by the steel trusses visible on the facades. During construction each floor was built at ground level and then hoisted into place with all its service equipment and fittings in place.

Many of the functions of the cental bank of ireland have been transferred to the ECB in recent years - the building is due to be vacated very soon.

description: This storyboard is extracted from a film which I created for the purpose of delivering a clear narrative. The film documents [using collaged footage] the escalating conflict, violence and recent arms build-up in the middle east and eastern Europe. Using a series of sources from RTE and BBC News to TV programs and films predicting a third world war. Using the backdrop of the return of the cold war, coupled with increasing mass migration to the west of Europe, the argument for Dublin’s growth can be made.

A non-NATO, neutral island far from conflict and enemies, Dublin presents itself as a modern city with no natural disasters or military threats. A digital hub in a growing digital world economy, Ireland and its low density and high quality of life lacks only the infrastructural capacity to deal with an increase in the movement of people into its growing cities.

The flow of people into the country must be dealt with at an urban scale as well as national. The architecture of Dublin 50 years from now must welcome its new arrivals to a city free from the destructive change these peoples may have witnessed. The adaptation of the capital city must provide mass transit, while conserving the historic fabric in an ever-changing climate. This combination of challenges, the design of a better transport system, the retention and re-use of existing architecture and the necessity for climate change defenses in a vulnerable city centre creates through a narrative, the brief for this thesis.

There are some interesting and unique aspects to our studio group and I believe the theme of our exhibition should reďŹ&#x201A;ect the ambition, diversity and loudness of the ideas that have developed. The Hyperloop: The Hyperloop is a conceptual high-speed transportation system originally put forward by entrepreneur Elon Musk, incorporating reduced-pressure tubes in which pressurized capsules ride on an air cushion driven by linear induction motors and air compressors.

The outline of the original Hyperloop concept was made public by the release of a preliminary design document in August 2013, which included a notional route running from the Los Angeles region to the San Francisco Bay Area, paralleling the Interstate 5 corridor for most of its length. Preliminary analysis indicated that such a route might obtain an expected journey time of 35 minutes, meaning that passengers would traverse the 350-mile (560 km) route at an average speed of around 600 mph (970 km/h), with a top speed of 760 mph (1,200 km/h). Preliminary cost estimates for the LA–SF notional route were included in the white paper—US$6 billion for a passenger-only version, and US$7.5 billion for a somewhat larger-diameter version transporting passengers and vehicles —although transportation analysts doubted that the system could be constructed on that budget.

Hyperloop technology has been explicitly open-sourced by Musk and SpaceX, and others have been encouraged to take the ideas and further develop them. To that end, several companies have been formed, and dozens of interdisciplinary student-led teams are working to advance the technology.

Designs for test tracks and capsules are currently being developed, with construction of a full-scale prototype 5-mile (8 km) track scheduled to start in 2016. In addition, a subscale pod design competition on a very short, 1 mile (2 km), test track is underway, with test runs expected later in 2016.

my design: The following design is for a hyper loop "cartridge and shell" system. This system uses a single form of transport vehicle (the cartridge), which acts at the scale of a metropolitan underground system. The passenger capsule uses a gyroscopic stabiliser in its hull to remain level when reacting to turning forces. The capsule is held inside a static cage, which can rotate to allow for access and for shielding from weather. This cage suspends the capsule on magnetic levitation tracks, either above, below or both. The shell is ďŹ tted with an air compressing fan at its front, and with magnetic pads and air skis for frictionless travel and propulsion along its sides. It is attached at an interchange whereby the passenger capsule can easily enter the receiving module at its rear. This allows for the passengers to use the evacuated-chamber hyperloop system, up to speeds of over 750mph. This level of transport integration greatly increases metropolitan, inter-city and inter-national transit efďŹ ciency.

I find the process of deconstruction / reconstruction very helpful when trying to visualise how this system might work at a specific scale. Deconstructing the existing building, reducing it to its constituent parts and removing anything non-structural leaves a clear image of the structure I have to work with.

By designing the vehicles in isolation based on current and prospective transport models, defined prototypes give specific architectural restrictions when it comes to space, access, capacity etc. The modes of transport dictate the scale and general geometry of the first layer of program - that of the station, its platforms, circulation and mechanical operation.

By bringing these sketches to a level of detail which can be clearly published, I can easily study them to understand the changes which need to be made. < 077 >

Our capital occupies a place on the world stage in terms of performance in Science, Technology, Art and Culture. An attractive location for future migrants, our capacity to recieve, adapt and circulate the population must be improved.
