“WE ARE NOT AFRAID OF THE FUTURE”

WE ARE NOT AFRAID OF THE FUTURE Unit F 2016-2017 Tutors: Catrina Stewart & Hugh McEwen With Greg Nordberg

Unit F produces projects that intend to change society. This year Unit F has investigated how architecture can condition utopic improvements in social life. Exactly 500 years ago, Thomas More was the first to give the name ‘utopia’ to an idea that has captured the human imagination ever since - the idea that a better world could exist. A utopia is a comprehensive system of civil organisation, in which communal buildings function to encourage the moral character of society. It is in this vein that our communal projects are sited, inspired by Tomas Bata’s maxim, “We are not afraid of the future”. The proposals in Unit F are based on careful readings of architectural projects that imagine utopic social environments, which we find in many locations in the real world, from world expos, through micronations, down to the scale of communal buildings. Our site for the year is Hackney, an urban location home to a diverse range of radical communities, from the feminist group the Hackney Flashers, to the first Working Mens Club. The borough supports an incredible array of projects built by collectives, which Unit F have explored and learned from. At the same time, Hackney is the ancient boundary to Essex, the traditional bolt hole for radicals who wished to create new visions of the world, unfettered by the city. By imagining that a better world is possible, Unit F seeks to empower critical architectural propositions on topics such as health, politics, and education.

YOUTH NOURISHING CULTIVATOR Obesity and social disintegration are the major crisis that the London borough of Hackney is facing. To tackle the problems, an alternative life style has to be cultivated and educated to the youth. An agriculture industrial education centre is to be proposed by the Hackney council sited at the end of Narrow way and the beginning of the Mare Street. The main part of the building itself served as a restaurant primarily selling highly simulated veggie burgers with daily essential nutrition values, changing the meat and fat consumption in Hackney. The other part of the building is a series of workshops cultivating and educating an alternative lifestyle for Hackney citizens.

THE YOUTH TOWN HALL The youth Town Hall in Hackney is a discussion and learning centre, designed to educate its young population about politics in an social and interactive manner. This project initiated as a reaction to Hackney being the youngest Borough in London, yet neglecting the youth when it comes to local decision making. It offers an improvement of the so-far old-fashioned political system, by integrating the younger share of the population and therefore making local politics more democratic. The proposal offers a sequence of learning activities, meaning the youngsters gain influence as they progress throughout the architecture. These consist of the press sector, the announcement room, the debating chambers and the classrooms. This journey allows them to gain enough knowledge and experience to propose informed ideas to the Town Hall and become a credible part of the local government.

THE WORSHIPFUL COMPANY OF INDEPENDENT WORKERS The emergence of the gig economy and independent work has been pioneered by the companies in charge. The relationship between the companies’ and workers’ and their employment status, is causing problems for many exploited workers as well as the government. Using influences from the Guilds of London, the building seeks to give control of the gig economy to the independent workers, by creating a large community in Hackney. This community will seek to regulate the companies they work with as well as support workers in the transport sectors of the gig economy, such as Deliveroo riders and Uber drivers.

BOXING EMPIRE The ‘Boxing Empire’ project is a scheme which reacts to the high obesity and malnutrition levels of office workers in Hackney. The proposal incites the users to exercise by boxing, losing calories, and exchanging these for coupons that can be used in its cafeteria. The building and its surrounding act as a chess player who moves the users around like chess pieces, guiding them towards a healthier lifestyle. In order to achieve this, the design draws inspiration from Freemasonry architecture, using the symbolism of specific patterns, forms and lighting. It features sequenced tiles, hidden staircases and a kinetic roofing, which reacts to the position of the sun.

THE HEART OF HERITAGE Due to globalisation, people are experiencing a period of uncertainty called the identity crisis. As we live in a digital world that raises concerns on the physical proof of our identity, this project aims to tackle the issues by proposing a heritage centre that exists in affiliation to the NHS. Placed in Hackney, one of the most diverse and culturally appropriate boroughs of London for the development of this project, it provides a health facility that allows people to trace their DNA, identify their family heritage and determine genetically transferable health issues. Moreover, casting workshops and a recording studio offer the people of Hackney the possibility to become part of the futures historical heritage, while the meet and greet space becomes the centre of all new friendships, new stories and family extension meetings. Finally, the large exhibition towers are places of self-expression, the physical proof of the Hackney identity.

MINISTRY OF FOOD

z

In order to provide free emergency food in Hackney, the organisation set up four different spots in the borough for people to collect. However the collection time is limited and insufficient. The Ministry of Food is not just a new foodbank in this area, but also consists of communal restaurant, where these benefited people can cook their food immediately after collection. The income from selling food to the public will totally use for purchasing emergency food and other charity purpose. A testing vegetation green house also self-supplies certain types of food to the restaurant, on the other hand it also reminds people not to waste food.

PERFORMING ARTS SCHOOL FOR SYRIAN REFUGEE TEENAGERS IN HACKNEY For people who belong to minority culture in a European country such as UK, it is very easy to develop an inferiority complex. The aim of the building is to give refugee teenagers a space to discover a safe form of self-expression. The program is a Performing Arts School with a hands-on approach to education which will allow the students to design different aspects of the performance, build it and finally perform in it. Symbolic self-expression through the arts allows children to express complex feelings and hybrid identities. It not only empowers children but also improves their health and wellbeing by helping them to cope with possible PTSD by allowing them to process the horrors they experienced. Most importantly the three different levels of exposure that the building creates allows the students to tell their stories only to people they feel comfortable with at the time. Finally, the building acts as a mediator between refugees and Hackney community. It aims to create understanding and compassion instead of crude rejection so often faced by refugees due to the lack of understanding from the host communities.

NATURE’S TRUE NURTURE Nature’s True Nurture’s (NTT) was birthed to create something beyond the typical realm of education. Utilising nature as a priority to design and formulate a different methodology towards educating the youth of Hackney, NTT seeks to revitalise the youth through embracing the natural environment. Through intensive studies of the Scout’s ways, NTT is organised into unique architectural forms specifically tailored to each typology of teaching, be it: community, interpersonal and personal teaching types. Whilst using the undulating naturistic form of the fabricated landscape, the building exists in tandem with its natural surroundings hoping to promote a holistic and atypical education seeking to put forth a new attitude towards learning for the future of the youth.

EPHEMERAL TOWER In the spirit of this year’s Unit F motto ‘We are not afraid of the future’, my project has been designed to tackle one of the most prominent on-going contemporary fears; the fear of death. Through embodying the Buddhist mentality of accepting death as an integral part of life, the project aims to be a subtle reminder of the temporality of life to the citizens of Hackney. By working in partnership with Hackney Mortuary Service, the building will function as both a bereavement centre for those dealing with loss and an archive to memorialise former Hackney citizens.

Through the utilisation of the natural remedial properties of herbs, the building intends to encourage the recovery of those who are addicted, whilst also being a celebration of the nations favourite drink: tea. The process of growing these herbs, which will be done by those in recovery, will act as a form of rehabilitation, as well as a development of their skills for future employment. This, coupled with private tea ceremonies conducted as a form of counselling and general livelihood support will aim to curb the problem of alcohol addiction in the area.

THE SOCIAL MEDIA STOCKMARKET Having explored the concept of an economic system based on anarchy I now aim to challenge our changing society further. Due to scarce resources within the economy one looks to a developing digital world and exploring the concept of this as a resource and the control it exerts on us as a society. Having investigated banking, research and research into gift economics the parallels of the social paradigm of “I liked your photo you should like mine become evident. This idea of an online economy starts to form a new social hierarchy, one based entirely from anonymous appreciation. Through development of this social construct of anonymous appreciation create a programme in which this utopian digital economy can begin to influence our own global economy

My programme investigates the relationship between people and the environment they live in. The building functions to reverse engineer harmful pollutants not native in the natural world into something that will improve the welfare of the inhabitants of the local and eventually wider area. On a personal scale, it will educate those who use the premises using a hands-on approach that will make the implications of pollutants upon the environment clearly explicit. Thus, promoting exercise and wellbeing as well as a communal incentive to keep the community clean so that those who live there benefit from the clean air and water generated by the building.

THE VOICE OF HACKNEY’S YOUTH The UK, and especially Hackney, has a low turnout rate for elections. This building aims to create lifelong voting habits and encourage a political interest from an early age, by educating the children of today to become engaged citizens throughout their life. z z According to several publications, children’s lack of participation and interest in politics largely comes down to the lack of z engagement between politicians and children; the of-putting formality of the politics itself, the buildings, the polling stations, and the fact that the average age of a politician is 50 years old.

Children of today are our voters of the future and make up almost a third of our population, so their voices should become fundamental in politics. The Voice of Youth building will encourage political interest and engagement by allowing children to not only take part of different elections concerning their society, but also experience a variety of electoral and voting procedures.

REPLANNING PLANNING z z z

Replanning Planning continues my first semester themes of exploiting legal loopholes and reclaiming space by creating a subverted planning office, which aims to address Hackney’s growing housing crisis as the borough’s demographic shifts from young professionals to young families. Instead of telling people what they cannot do, as the standard planning process does, the practice would instead pro-actively help people create the most out of their potential developments by promoting extreme use of permitted development, allowing young families to stay in Hackney despite the housing crisis, to collectively oppose gentrification. The process would be carried out through models, a far more accessible an easily understood method, instead of the standard orthographics, and would allow people to design their own extensions or portable business to their own needs. It would also provide assistance to the ‘weekend builder’ and contain patterns for standard components for self build to speed up the process further. The extensions created would foster community ties, allow young families to retain support networks, and create space for new businesses within the borough.
