\ SINCE OPENING IN 2013 IN PANAMA CITY, Waldorf Astoria Panama has made its mark on the fashionable Calle Uruguay neighborhood.

From the outset, Waldorf Astoria’s first Latin-American outpost broke with some of the brand’s classic roots, occupying a trendy address—where historical Spanish heritage buildings meld with the modern skyline—and boasting a poolside bar. While at hotel school, Aldo was presented with an opportunity to join the Waldorf Astoria Panama team as a trainee in the Food and Beverage Department. Little did he know that this trainee role would lead him to reconnect with his passion for art.

The recently revamped Le Diwan lounge is the newest addition to the hotel’s dining options and pays tribute to Waldorf Astoria Hotels & Resorts’ American heritage. \ IT WAS WITH GREAT ANTICIPATION that Michael Mina brought not one but two classic French dining experiences to the Waldorf Astoria Chicago last summer.

For Mina, a partnership with the hotel was serendipitous. “I have always admired the hospitality and dining sensibilities of Chicago,” explains Mina. “When the Waldorf Astoria Chicago presented me with this opportunity, I was thrilled to collaborate with a venerable hotel partner.”

If the café’s pistachio-green paneled walls, white and taupe linen shades, and brass fixtures implore you to stay, take a seat by the white marble-topped L-shaped

bar—the anchor of Petit Margeaux—which houses a display of classic French treats.

My favorite cocktail at the moment is The Ruble, which refers to the Russian electrical engineer Alexander Lodygin as, contrary to popular belief, it was he who invented the light bulb, not Edison. Once served at your table, just say ‘spasiba’ and the light bulb will be lit. It won’t come as a surprise that the main ingredient we use in The Ruble is the Russian Caravan Vodka. A refreshing drink, made with a very unique flavor from Szechuan Buttons with a grassy, slightly sour flavor accompanied by a pleasant tingling sensation. The ingredients which complement this cocktail are Pomegranate Shrub, bergamot and East Imperial Grapefruit Tonic.”

“In honor of the newly introduced Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills into the family, we created our very own version of the Ginger Margarita, featuring the well-known Chinese Pu-erh Tea as the base ingredient.

This adds an aromatic, as well as a gentle bitterness to the cocktail.

We do not shy away from over a hundred years of British heritage with this cocktail, which is poured from a traditional teapot at the iconic Long Bar. We blend Pu-erh Tea with tequila as the base liquor, which brews for around three or four days. Once mixed with gin, fresh lemon juice, framboise syrup and almond syrup, the Pu-Erh Tea Margarita comes out fluttering a one-of-a-kind, light tea smell.”

\ SIGNATURE PEACOCK EGG COCKTAIL “This cocktail is part of our mission statement at Waldorf Astoria Orlando. What we see from guests receiving the Peacock Egg Cocktail is an immediate, eye-open ‘wow’ moment. It starts with a balloon, which is frozen into an egg shape and then hollowed out to allow the cocktail to go inside. The cocktail itself—which is a mix of lavender-infused lemonade, blue Curaçao and gin—is inserted through a drilled hole into the egg-shaped sphere. We have to make sure the beverage is very cold when we pour it in so it doesn’t crack the egg! The egg then sits in a tall wide-mouthed glass containing blue sugar and an LED light for serving. We often use the cocktail when we are making toasts because it’s such a showstopper.”

Described by Isabelle Stanislas as a “network of lines and forms that build the unlimited space of an imaginary world”, the French architect’s collection for wrought-iron craftsmen Pouenat is geometric design at its most graphic. An array of linear shapes and serrated edges, ‘Landscapes’ creates artful sculptures out of Pouenat’s malleable forms.

The ‘Candlelight’ ceiling light, crafted in satin-varnished, gunmetal patinated brushed steel, shines particularly bright in this sculptural series.

Standing to attention is the ‘Davis Folding Screen’, which evokes 1920s glamor with its repeated geometric motif.

Delicately cut out of the stainless-steel frame, the intricate interplay of shapes on Eichotlz’s room divider is reminiscent of art-deco aesthetics. Lara Bohinc’s ‘Fortress Vase’ range is a riveting marriage of ancient and futuristic geometric forms. Inspired by the octagonal towers at Diocletian’s Palace in Croatia, Bohinc’s hexagonal blocks interlock and embrace to allow the play of light and shade on their many surfaces and angles. \ LUPITA NYONG’O IS CONSTANTLY ON THE LOOKOUT FOR NEW CHALLENGES. The second of six children from one of Kenya’s most important political families, she was always expected to achieve great things in life. So when she won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for 12 Years a Slave, it was merely one step towards fulfilling her manifest destiny.

“I WAS RAISED TO BE CONFIDENT AND DETERMINED,” Nyong’o says. “Even though there were times when I worried whether success would come, I always believed that if I worked hard and kept believing in myself that good things would happen to me. Of course, I was hoping to find regular work—I didn’t expect to win an Oscar. But it did give me a tremendous sense of reassurance that it pays to have faith in your abilities.”

Her father Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o, a former Kenyan senator and university professor, is just as famous in her native land as she is, although her most recent appearance in Star Wars: The Last Jedi may have bumped her up a few notches in the national popularity rankings. And she’s not done yet. This year, she plays the female lead in Black Panther, her first venture into the Marvel Comics universe. It’s all part of her ingrained sense of mission to keep setting the bar higher.

HAVING FIRST GAINED ATTENTION AS A MODEL and cover girl for Vogue, InStyle, Marie Claire and Elle, before she made her acting breakthrough in 12 Years a Slave, Nyong’o is now basking in the added visibility that comes from working in massive studio blockbusters.

“I’ve been reading all the comics trying to get ready. I’m playing Nakia and I did some very intensive training and martial-arts work that was necessary to be able to perform all the action scenes. I’d never really put myself through that kind of rigorous physical preparation before and I had a lot of fun getting into that. I also loved being part of the bigger spectacle that comes with this kind of movie and I had a lot of fun on the set!”

IT’S BEEN A BUSY LAST COUPLE OF YEARS for Nyong’o, whose career seemed to be floundering in the period immediately following her Oscar triumph. She couldn’t seem to find the right vehicle that would maintain her Hollywood momentum. But things started to turn around for her after landing the supporting role of pirate Maz Kanata in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and voicing the role of the fiercely protective wolf mother Raksha, in the Disney Studios’ live-action reboot of The Jungle Book.

Then came her critically-acclaimed appearance in The Queen of Katwe, playing the part of Harriet, the mother of a young girl who rises from the slums and grinding poverty of Uganda to achieve international glory as an unlikely chess champion. Based on a true story, the film was directed by Mira Nair who gave Nyong’o one of her first film jobs as an 18-year-old production assistant.

“I WAS THRILLED TO GET THE CHANCE TO WORK WITH MIRA AGAIN and of course it was a great source of pride for me that she chose me to act in her film,” Nyong’o explains. “She lives in Uganda and knows and loves the culture.

“We very rarely see such uplifting stories coming out of Africa, which give people a reason to believe that you can start small and still go on to achieve great things in life. It’s also a universal story that everyone all over the world can appreciate.

We don’t always see African countries and their people humanized or viewed in terms of inspiration, journeys of success and empowerment.

“I’ve also lived the dream of being able to achieve my ambition to become an actor.

My mother had dream charts and would say, ‘What do you want to dream shortterm, long-term and mid-term?’ She really believed in dreaming out loud.”

Nyong’o was born in Mexico where her father, Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o, was teaching in exile after her family was forced to flee Kenya due to political turmoil and the presumed murder of her uncle by operatives of then-President Daniel arap Moi. It was after she and her family returned to Nairobi four years later that people around her took note of her stage presence, when she began performing in plays from kindergarten through to high school.

“I LOVED MAKE-BELIEVE,” Nyong’o recalls. “I was the child in the cupboard playing with my Barbies. I started thinking about acting when I saw The Color Purple when I was around eight or nine. It was the first time I’d seen someone like me on screen.

Whoopi Goldberg had my kind of hair and was dark like me.

I thought, maybe I could do this for a living.”

She adds: “As I grew older, though, I saw how very few people in Kenya were able to make a living at it. I didn’t think I would be able to have a career if I stayed in Africa. That’s why I knew I had to leave Africa and make my way to America. I just kept working hard and hoping that one day I would get my opportunity to show what I could do.”

IT WAS AT THIS POINT IN HER LIFE THAT SHE RETURNED TO MEXICO because her parents wanted her to learn Spanish.

After a year there she moved to the U.S. where she majored in African and film studies at Hampshire College in Amherst, Mass. Nyong’o later applied and was admitted into the prestigious Yale School of Drama that counts Meryl Streep, Paul Newman and Elizabeth Banks as some of its illustrious alumni.

NYONG’O WAS ONLY THREE WEEKS AWAY FROM GRADUATION when she learned that she had been chosen by director Steve McQueen to play Patsey in 12 Years a Slave.

“Yale was allowing graduating students to audition for parts, which is normally prohibited while you’re studying there. My manager Didi Rea received the script for another client of hers, Garret Dillahunt, who plays Armsby in the movie. But when Didi read the role of Patsey she said, ‘Oh, I think you’d be good for this’.

out from a friend that they were looking for people to work on the set of The Constant Gardener and I was able to get a job as a production runner. I was able to spend some time working for Ralph Fiennes and he was very kind and we had some good conversations about acting and the business side of it, which was very helpful.”

their way up the Hollywood ladder, Lupita never gave into the doubt that often weighs down on up-and-coming actors.

“When you get into acting, you know that the odds are stacked against you. But if you also feel that you have the talent and the ability to keep working hard then you’re going to stay the course.

12 Years a Slave was my chance to prove myself and now it’s up to me to keep finding good roles. The pressure will always be there but I kind of enjoy that. It keeps you hungry.”

WHEN HE ASKED HER ABOUT HER AMBITIONS IN LIFE, she replied: “I want to be an actor.” He then hesitated for a moment, sighed, and gave her some potentially discouraging advice: “Lupita, only act if you can’t breathe without it.”

APART FROM HER ACTING WORK, Nyong’o has also seen her popularity soar as a brand ambassador for Lancôme. Her dazzling beauty was recognized shortly after her Oscar win and in 2014, the French cosmetics and skincare company signed her to a lucrative contract said to be worth $5 million.

Nyong’o took Fiennes’ cautionary comments as a form of inspiration. Despite the odds against African-American actors making

“So we put me on tape in New York and then the next week I was going to be traveling to L.A. as part of what is called the Yale Showcase. It was while I was there that I was invited to take part in the most grueling audition process you could imagine. Two weeks later, I was invited to meet Steve (McQueen, the director) in Louisiana and I did my next audition in person with him. I returned to New York the next day and that’s when he called me personally to tell me that the part was mine. I’ll never forget that.”

THAT CAREER-DEFINING MOMENT is light-years-removed from her first brush with Hollywood 11 years ago, when she found herself working as a production assistant to Ralph Fiennes while he was shooting The Constant Gardener not far from her home in Nairobi.

“I came back to Kenya on a holiday break while I was doing my undergrad work at Hampshire College,” Nyong’o recalls. “I found

“RISK WAS A PART OF MY UPBRINGING. My father was always willing to take risks because he believed that we must fight for what is right in the world, and that often in life you need to take risks to accomplish great things.

My father also had a strong sense of justice and he showed me what true courage means.”

Her emergence as a rising film star may have taken the film world by surprise, but Lupita never doubted that she would one day make her mark on the world.

Of course, it still remains to be seen whether Nyong’o can ultimately find regular work as a lead actress in a film industry that still fails to give women and visible minorities adequate space and opportunity. But don’t think for a moment that Lupita will ever let herself feel limited or discouraged by occasional detours on her, admittedly, “very ambitious” journey in life.

WHILE NYONG’O IS NOW IN THE PROCESS of consolidating her status in Hollywood, she hasn’t lost her sense of social responsibility. Over the years, she has spoken out on various human and women’s rights issues and maintains the same spirit of political engagement that she learned from her parents.

“I’m very conscious of all the terrible and tragic events taking place all over the world,” she explains, “and I will continue to speak out for human rights and women’s rights wherever I go.”

Her father Peter’s life was constantly at risk while he was serving in the political opposition in Kenya and this helped engender Lupita’s fearless spirit that permeates her outlook.

“I’M VERY OPTIMISTIC. I don’t see any value in getting depressed or feeling powerless. You gain power and confidence from being willing to go out into the world and see what you can do. You might not always accomplish your goals, but you have to maintain your faith and self-belief.

You can’t help yourself or others if you look inward and feel sorry for yourself.

I believe that we have to challenge ourselves every day to go out and make the world better.”

Frequently misattributed to Wright, it was actually designed by one Albert Chase McArthur, a former draftsman at Wright’s studio. McArthur asked for his old employer’s counsel, and he got it, specifically with regards to the use of the ‘textile blocks’ system on the façade, a well-known Wright device. But the design was all his, and the hotel evolved into a legendary destination, much-loved for its oasis-like charm as well as its intense, all-consuming design.

WRIGHT’S STYLE—and the work of his students and followers— flourished in the mid-century period, before ultimately being usurped by the crisp glass-and-steel modernism creeping east from LA and Palm Springs. Arizona remained an outpost for the unusual and eccentric, a place where the new architectural rigor could be spliced with the gaudy pastels and canted forms of space-age design. A place where every hour was cocktail hour, by the turquoise pools and deep-blue skies, with sparse interiors looking out on the hot, dusty expanses.

\ THERE IS SOMETHING IN THE DESERT AIR. Arizona is a vast but sparse desert state that’s been part of the United States for just over a century. Today, it’s best known for its many national parks and monuments and Native American reservations, all set amongst 114,000 square miles of spectacular, mostly arid desert environment. Yet the state is also a frontier for innovative American architecture, a landscape that has long encouraged experimentation and new forms.

Most importantly, Arizona was the home of Frank Lloyd Wright, the legendary American architect whose work was celebrated throughout 2017 to mark the 150th anniversary of his birth. Over the course of a long career, Wright not only built extensively in the state but used its terrain as inspiration for a new kind of architecture, one that used the colors and forms of the desert to create an almost mystical synthesis of structure and decoration. One of his masterpieces, Taliesin West, highlights this desert aesthetic.

GO DEEPER INTO THE DESERT, away from the parched suburbs of Phoenix and Tucson, and the landscape imparts more influence. Yuma, Tombstone, Flagstaff, Sedona—the state is scattered with place names that evoke dry deserts and far horizons, frontier living and millennia-old cultures. Contemporary architects are creating a more authentic relationship with the desert, experimenting with forms and materials that splice a little bit of Wright’s self-conscious magic with the minimal perfection of the modernist era. 1. TALIESIN WEST Wright’s desert studio, Taliesin West in Scottsdale, is the region’s masterpiece. Low-lying and set deep within the landscape, the house and studio is still a school of architecture and home to the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. Set over 500 acres, it makes masterful use of the state’s primary currency: space; taming the desert through landscaping and gardens that flow in and out of the buildings and courtyards. Begun in late 1937, every single facet of the space was overseen by Wright and his entourage of assistants and apprentices, from furniture to fabrics, crockery and decoration, much of it made on site as part of the apprenticeship program.

3. ARCOSANTI As the sixties swung shut and the more austere seventies hove into view, the idea of the utopian commune was one of the ideas that endured. Arizona is home to one of the greatest: the desert city of Arcosanti.

Founded in 1970 by the late Italian architect Paolo Soleri, the site—on the edge of the Agua Fria National monument—was intended as an ‘urban laboratory’, a self-build city that had more in common with European hill-top communities than modern American sprawl. Self-built over decades by over 7,000 volunteers who have lived and worked on the site, construction of this eclectic concrete community is still ongoing. 4. CHAPEL OF THE HOLY CROSS, SEDONA Sedona is Arizona’s spiritual outlet, a distant desert town tucked into a mesa-strewn valley. At sunset, the rocks glow red, casting a magical light over the main street’s shops, awash in New-Age trinkets sold by diehard advocates of the alternative lifestyle.

The area’s architectural masterpiece is the Chapel of the Holy Cross, an angular monolith that rises up to the south of the town, with window mullions forming a massive cross. Local sculptor Marguerite Brunswig Staude initiated the project, and it was completed by Richard Hein and August K. Strotz in 1957.

It remains one of America’s most distinctive modern churches.

5. ALFRED NEWMAN BEADLE In the post-war period, many architects made their stamp on the new housing and infrastructure that was sprouting up on the outskirts of cities such as Phoenix. Perhaps the area’s best-known exponent of mid-century modernism was Alfred Newman Beadle, who designed homes, apartments and offices in the city, including the Triad Apartments, the only one of the 22 famous Case Study House projects to be built outside of California. Known affectionately as ‘Beadle Boxes’, his designs were low-slung and sleek, the architectural equivalent of the era’s giant American cars. azarchitecture.com

\ PERHAPS IT’S A SURFEIT of distinctly unappealing pictures of underdressed stars of stage and screen sashaying down the red carpet, or maybe it is simply that fashion’s tectonic plates have shifted, but whatever the reason, there is now a distinct feeling in the air that demure is infinitely more alluring than too much flesh.

Not that some stars haven’t themselves felt that a more covered-up look was a whole lot more elegant and grown-up than plunging necklines and see-through bits of lace. Stars such as Cate Blanchett— who is incapable of looking vulgar—Emma Watson, Helen Mirren and Keira Knightley always manage to bring off the red-carpet high-glam look without feeling the need to display their assets. And remember Ruth Negga looking fabulous in long-sleeved, high-necked red Valentino at the 2017 Academy Awards?

SOME OF THE SEARCH FOR MODEST WEAR has, of course, been fueled by the growing profile and influence of the Muslim community. It’s worth noting that the Muslim Council of Britain

estimated Muslim spending power at £20.5 billion per year in the UK alone, while globally, Muslims are expected to spend £336 billion a year on fashion by 2019.

All this, no doubt, helps explain the arrival on the scene of the first London Modest Fashion Week in February 2017. The star hijab-wearing American-Somali model Halima Aden was flown in to open the show and, though all the clothing adhered strictly to Islamic rules and was aimed chiefly at the Muslim market, it was striking that much of the fashion appealed to a wider audience.

Burberry is one of the major brands to recognize how important the market is for modest fashion and last year launched a highly sophisticated collection in time to coincide with Ramadan—beautifully crafted round-necked lace dresses, great capes—all in all, a lot there for every grown-up woman who believes that less is more.

a model sported dresses or blouses with vast dramatic sleeves; a way of covering up and yet looking utterly in tune with the times. A perfect example being the sculptural white-cotton dress with dramatic sleeves that Stella McCartney sent down the runway last spring.

BUT WHILE THERE IS A BOOMING business in the sort of clothes that would pass muster in Saudi Arabia (and very glamorous some of it is too; I was particularly taken with some of the exceedingly elegant abayas from Inayah, while others will have noticed that last winter Dolce & Gabbana launched a range of dazzlingly desirable hijabs and abayas) several top-notch designers seem to have added a great dollop of modesty to many of their mainstream catwalk designs.

For those who have long felt instinctively that flaunting flesh was unattractive, who were always drawn to designers such as Jil Sander, Céline, Max Mara, The Row and their like, the good news is that the mood for ladylike and demure is even more in the air this year. Partly, of course, fashion has turned its attention to sleeves so that many

The modest dresser could go for her enveloping oversized coats, demure high-necked long-sleeved dresses or her romantic high-collared longsleeved blouses in printed light jersey.

At Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafini there are clothes that are romantically beautiful yet utterly ladylike—check his vintage-inspired lace maxi skirt and his ravishing highcollared, ruffled long-sleeved lace blouse.

And Giambattista Valli also goes in for utterly feminine, ravishingly romantic highnecked, long-sleeved billowing silk dresses.

At Gucci, the look is very much “look at me”, but its demurely collared blouses, longsleeved jackets and mid-length skirts all rock a modest retro vibe, which has made Alessandro Michele one of the most to-bewatched designers around.

After 25 years in the business (a landmark Wajer reached this year), the technical specs of its boats are as impressive as their bespoke options. There’s a push-button fender system, which can be operated remotely; a swim platform; three powerful 435 hp Volvo Penta engines, and that’s just for starters.

Given that these yachts are starting to share some of the luxury touches more often associated with superyachts, are they being used by a similar audience? Perhaps. Existing superyacht owners are apparently ordering them as high-quality chase boats, used to access the smaller coves that their behemoth boats are too large to access.

Wajer Commercial Director Dries Wajer explains that the clients who have already put in orders for their latest model also include “couples looking for superior weekender boats and people seeking a great vessel to share with friends”.

CLAYDON REEVES, THE COMPANY BEHIND THE NEW 65-FOOT AEROBOAT S6, has designed some of the world’s most recognizable superyachts, be it the award-winning 112-foot Solis or the 229-foot Cosmos. What, then, its move to create a smaller boat such as Aeroboat? “We saw a gap in the market for a really high-end day cruiser,” explains James Claydon, the company’s co-founder. “We haven’t seen anything in the industry that matches the detail, build quality and performance in terms of overall usability that we are striving for. The goal with the Aeroboat S6 is to make the ultimate day boat for the 21st century.”

\ SUPERYACHTS MAY USUALLY GRAB MOST OF THE HEADLINES— largely thanks to their ever-increasing size— but smaller day cruisers and speedboats are fast proving that big isn’t necessarily better. The AM37, an Aston Martin and Quintessence collaboration, certainly proved as much when it launched at the Monaco Yacht Show 2016. With lightingquick capabilities (we’re talking zero to 52 knots in seconds) and Bond-worthy interiors, it diverted much of the attention away from the rows of mega-yachts berthed in Port Hercules. Instead of wanting to explore the latest on-board helipads or sun-deck Jacuzzis, guests of the show were just desperate for high-speed test rides across the sun-soaked waters of the Med. THE 2017 EDITION OF THE SHOW saw a few more boatbuilders upping their game at this smaller end of the market.

“The AM37 is a bespoke powerboat,” explained Quintessence Yachts CEO Mariella Mengozzi. “Clients have almost limitless options to personalize the specification, color and interior, but also the flexibility to match

ITALIAN BOATBUILDERS ANVERA, meanwhile, bagged a prime position at the Monoco Boat Show for its new Anvera 55, right beneath the Monaco Yacht Club. Their Marketing Manager Emanuela Pradella is clear about the advantages of these smaller boats for owners. “People are getting tired of the big yachts; they are very expensive, they require a lot of crew and the owners don’t get much privacy. Sometimes, they want something easy; they just want to turn on the engine and leave.” They can certainly leave in speed too— Anvera’s all carbon-fibre boat can fly along at 46 knots—exactly what one might expect from a brand whose history lies in offshore racing.

Is it any wonder these sailing speed-machines are gathering pace?

That the city thrives despite the precipitous nature of its geography is testament to the grit of its inhabitants and must in some way be responsible for The Big Easy’s historical tendency to go against the grain. It is, after all, known as the most un-American of American cities, for its melting pot of cultures, architecture, cooking and cocktails.

‘NEW ORLEANS: SO FAR BEHIND WE’RE AHEAD’ read local bumper stickers and souvenir tees, and why wouldn’t they be proud of their past? The city’s legendary jazz and Prohibition-era heritage is what has cultured its world-renowned bar scene, hosting the international drinks industry annually at Tales of the Cocktail in July.

It may not be the birthplace of the cocktail (spirits historian David Wondrich insists that England was adding bitters to booze a century earlier) but New Orleans has been the cocktail capital of the world since 1800. A heady list of concoctions were invented here, from the Sazerac—generally considered to be the first official cocktail—to the Ramos Gin Fizz, popularized by New Orleans’ Governor Huey P Long, who brought one of his bartenders with him on a trip to New York to teach staff at The New Yorker hotel how to mix his favorite tipple.

SOMEWHAT PARADOXICALLY, COCKTAILS EVOLVED OUT OF MEDICINAL TINCTURES and home remedies to aid your health. Cure, an upmarket joint in Freret, delves back into that mindset, spiking drinks with reviving ingredients such as génépi flower, traditionally used to make a herbal liqueur that’s popular in the Alps. Its imaginative concoctions and gothic-loft interior have won it accolades that include being heralded as one of the World’s 50 Best Bars. As in Europe, this is the sort of place where you really ought to order a few nibbles with your beverage; just as well really, as it would be hard to turn down Pimento Cheese Toasties and Crawfish Stuffed Peppers.

By the same team, and equally well worth your dollar, is Cane & Table. Here it’s all about rum, so you’d be forgiven for thinking you had stepped into Old Havana. They describe their style as ‘prototiki’, but don’t be put off by the pretentious nametag— essentially they draw inspiration from sources that influenced the tiki bars of the 1930s, such as Ernest Hemingway’s writing.

Expects lots of big tropical flavors with a tongue-in-cheek twist. Order the daily punch, which is usually rooted in historical recipes.

I won’t tell you what’s in it, just know that it’s the same concoction that the West Indians employed to get their guests ‘curiously’ sauced. You will most definitely feel like you are on holiday here.

‘Have fun’ reads the motto at Pat O’Brien’s, and you really can’t fail to have a good time here. While it’s not the most refined bar in town—all the glassware is emblazoned with its logo—it makes the cut for its raucous live music, good-time Charlie attitude and unbeatable chartreuse sour. This is a bar for real New Orleanians: “Even though millions of people visit Pat O’s every year, locals are the reason the doors stay open,” says Shelly Waguespack, who has led the bar into the 21st century.

\ JOHN STEINBECK ONCE WROTE OF ITALY: “It isn’t quite real when you’re there and becomes beckoningly real when you have gone.” This couldn’t be more accurate for describing the picturesque organic wine estate of Il Borro, a fairy-tale Tuscany estate owned by a true Tuscan family: the Ferragamos.

EMBRACED BY CYPRESS TREE-LINED HILLS just outside of Florence, Il Borro, meaning ‘The Gorge’ is an enchanting medieval fortress village dating back almost a thousand years to the 12th century. Located in a strategically defensive area between two ancient Roman roads, the estate was extended throughout time, being passed between noble families (including, of course, the Medicis) over the centuries before Ferruccio Ferragamo, son of the famed shoemaker, bought the entire property in 1993.

Just as Conrad Hilton cast his visionary eye on the Waldorf Astoria long before he acquired it, Ferruccio had fallen madly in love with the historic estate many years before it would become his legacy.

respect and preserve the land that gives back to us so much.”

As well as the established vines that cover a grand proportion of the farmland, there is the biodynamic crop project Orto Del Borro, managed by Vittoria Ferragamo, Salvatore’s sister, who oversees the growing of wholesome, seasonal produce used in the on-site restaurants as well as delivered to local customers.

AFTER OVER 20 YEARS OF PAINSTAKING RESTORATION, Il Borro is now run by the next generation Ferragamo, Salvatore, Ferruccio’s son. “Luckily, we are in an area famed for its artisanal craftsmen,” he says. “We committed to using the original techniques to restore Il Borro to its former glory stone-by-stone.” Authentic terracotta tiles sit atop the stucco-clad buildings that make up the ancient village. Cobbled alleyways weave between vine-covered accommodations and botteghe (artisanal workshops) that showcase the best of the local produce and artisan makers. “This thousand-year-old village is my favorite area of the estate; the history is amazing,” says Salvatore. “It is the heart and soul of the property and will be part of the future heritage of our family.”

The remaining 700 acres of captivating landscape is home to the organic and sustainable enterprise that Il Borro prides itself on. “It is the most important thing to

HEAD CHEF ANDREA CAMPANI wanders the farm every morning to find inspiration for his daily-changing dishes—the true definition of farm-to-table eating. “I am the luckiest chef in Italy,” he smiles. “The ingredients dictate the dishes that I create, not the other way around.” Tomatoes in a panzanella salad sing with sweetness, ripe from the relentless summer sun, and the basil pesto (made with Il Borro olive oil, of course) cuts through a soft burrata with its garden-fresh punch. “I have been given free rein over the kitchen, to create dishes that reflect our culture and tradition.”

The key word here is transparency, from the open-view kitchen to the traceability of the ingredients. Campani’s future plans to introduce wheat to the farm to make pasta from scratch for use in the worldwide (and growing) Il Borro Tuscan Bistro empire, will bring a piece of the hallowed land to its patrons.

SALVATORE’S PRIDE AND JOY, however, is the extensive vaulted cellar that houses the critically acclaimed wines from his vineyard. The certified-organic estate produces not only traditional Tuscan Sangiovese grape, used most famously in the Chianti wines, but also the more commonly known Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah to name but a few. “We wanted this incredibly fertile land to produce excellent wine once again and to share its flavors,” Salvatore explains. Rather than creating a simple wine that was “used as a ‘supplement’ of necessity for farmers in the past”, Salvatore and his oenologist Stefano Chioccioli have utilized Il Borro’s terroir—the differing soils, altitudes and other variables of the landscape—to create a far more refined product in the way the French have for hundreds of years. “This is a relatively new method in Italy of producing a more polished wine,” boasts Ferragamo. “This is why the Il Borro IGT Rosso wine is the one that I am most proud of. It has a precious balance that has taken years to perfect.”

‘SETTING A PRECEDENT

THE FAMILY’S COMMITMENT TO ECO-CREDIBILITY is so substantial that they have adopted wonderfully bucolic measures to ensure the organic nature of the wine. A herd of rare-breed Chianina cattle bathes under the Tuscan sun; they are bred for the use of their manure, which is buried and fermented before being diluted and sprayed over the vines, to ensure the ultimate soil fertility. “We are even bringing in horses to replace tractors between the vines to keep the ground from being compressed and damaging the soil,” says Ferragamo. As well as the unique methods in the production, the wines themselves are nothing short of revolutionary. This year sees the launch of a 100-per-cent Sangiovese rosé which has already been given a 94 point rating as well as a pure Sangiovese sparkling rosé, the first of its kind ever produced. “Next year sees the launch of a sparkling wine aged on the yeast for over two years,” says Ferragamo with pride. “These wines will only keep getting better with age.”

THE CHARM OF IL BORRO is hard to resist. The family atmosphere created by the Ferragamos is strongly felt throughout the estate, from the pitch that regularly holds fierce sibling polo battles to the collection of etchings, paintings and illustrations in the wine art gallery that have been passed down through the generations. Il Borro is not only about the produce, it is about setting a precedent for the future of the estate and creating a new heritage that will, surely, one day be as synonymous with the Ferragamo name as fashion and footwear.

\ IN 1868, A POPULAR AMERICAN NEWSPAPER COLUMNIST called Fanny Fern was turned away from an all-male New York Press Club dinner honoring Charles Dickens.

Fern explained that she was invited to listen to the speeches “through the crack of a door”. One month later, Fern co-founded America’s first professional women’s club, Sorosis, along with children’s author Josephine Pollard. Its objective was to further the educational and social activities of women by bringing representative women of accomplishment in art, literature, science and kindred pursuits together. It was pioneering, at a time when the term ‘glass ceiling’ was unheard of and the concept of women networking to promote their careers was outlandish, especially within the smoke-filled lounges of all the world’s private men’s clubs.

SO WHILE THE IDEA OF WOMEN-ONLY MEMBERS CLUBS isn’t new, a new wave of modern interpretations has been emerging with increasing frequency over the past 10 years, driven by the reality that an increasing number of high-flying women are balancing jobs, motherhood and everyday life.

“Women are seeking these clubs because we want to be with each other,” says Mary Aitken, founder of Verity—a 57,000-sq-ft women-only members club in Toronto. “If we don’t band together a bit, we’re never going to break that glass ceiling.”

A former investment banker, Aitken founded the Canadian club in 2004 with the aim of offering its 800 time-poor members— consisting of a broad mix of award-winning entrepreneurs, corporate heavyweights, creative artisans and top legal minds— a place to network and find solutions to personal challenges.

“It’s about the sharing and exchange of knowledge and fun,” says Aitken, “and having an oasis and retreat where women can get away from work and home—it’s a third home.”

When Audrey Gelman and Lauren Kassan opened The Wing, the much-anticipated women’s club in New York, its October introduction came at a timely moment when a woman was on the verge of clinching the US presidency. Now that we know it wasn’t to be, The Wing feels even more important as a place where women can work and collaborate. Located in the Ladies’ Mile Historic District of Manhattan’s Flatiron neighborhood, The Wing is outfitted with open-plan workspace, meeting rooms, a phone booth, an extensive all-female library, a café with food, wine and cocktails made by women, a beauty room and showers, and all, say Gelman and Kassan, designed with the sole purpose of making women’s lives easier.

“WHEN THE CLUB MOVEMENT BEGAN, women sought education and to cultivate identities outside of the home,” explain Gelman and Kassan, “but as times changed, so did the priorities of club women. Each new generation of women has found power in community, and together their determination has made the world they live in a better, more inclusive place.”

SHARING A SIMILAR ETHOS is the Women’s International Club of Paris (Le WIC de Paris). Formed in early 1996 to enable women of different nationalities living in and around Paris to share their cultures in a friendly environment, it is the aim of Le WIC de Paris to offer a wide array of activities and functions to its 250 members who hail from 52 countries.

While all functions are conducted in English, the club ensures a balance is met to maintain a truly international atmosphere, helped in part by its affiliation with Open Door, a network of international women’s associations that are non-political, nonreligious and non-commercial.

EAT Treat the family to Hawaiian flavors at Humu Humu, the resort’s thatched-roof Polynesian restaurant. DO With the most fantastic swimming pools and splash zones on Maui, there’s no better way to get your bearings—and to quash jet lag—than an exhilarating ride down Grand Wailea’s Lava Tube. The recently reimagined slide is one of the hotel’s most popular features for kids, for good reason.

With a 30-foot drop and 262 feet of foaming slides, guests have been known to reach speeds of up to 22 miles per hour.

The Wailea Canyon pool on six different levels provides something more sedate. Gentle currents carry you through a variety of tropical zones including a Tarzan rope swing, waterfalls, caves and a grotto-based swim-up bar. It even has a sandy beach. Set off on an adventure for a picnic lunch at Twin Falls (just 30 miles away) where a gentle hike leads to majestic waterfalls, perfect for an afternoon of swimming and rock jumping. Boca Raton Resort and Club’s Andrew Roenbeck (who’s been in the industry for 30 years) teamed up with rising star Sara Hauman (who has a raft of awards and accolades under her immaculately turned out apron). The duo impressed judges with their carefully curated submissions—each an exquisite work of art, decorated with a colorful scattering of edible petals and bursting with exciting flavor combinations, reminiscent of their joint ventures in South Florida.

The first ensemble was Kobe Beef Carpaccio with bone marrow toast, king mushroom and shaved white Alba truffle paired with a cocktail featuring Rum Zacapa, Six Grapes Reserve Porto, a honey, ginger and lemongrass syrup, orange liqueur and Jasmine green tea, elegantly finished with an egg-white-foam island and a flamed blood-orange peel. Their second exciting offering featured ‘Angry American Lobster’ with Florida citrus key lime, Asian BBQ sauce and toasted sesame, alongside a mocktail of loose-leaf jasmine green tea, blood-orange sour and a spicy ginger, lemongrass and honey syrup, poured over saffron ice from a dry-ice-filled teapot.

Graduate of the prestigious cookery school Ferrandi, Trianon Palace Versailles’ Master Chef Frédéric Larquemin collaborated with Rising Star Brad Kilgore, who heads up Alter in Miami. Together, they dexterously presented a sensational Puffed Barbajuan, paired with the ‘Sun King’ cocktail featuring passion-fruit snow, finger lime ‘caviar’, lemon confit and vodka. Their second bonne bouche introduced a Terrine D’Or with foie gras rillette pressé, celeriac, horseradish and apple, accompanied by a ‘Pomme de Parfum’ mocktail, consisting of gala apple, bergamot essence and cedar tea.

GENEVA Hosted at the Geneva Palexpo, a convention center in the heart of the city, this Geneva International Motor Show is organized by the Organisation Internationale des Constructeurs d’Automobiles, and is largely considered to be one of the most important international auto shows on the planet. Since its inception in 1905, it has hosted almost all major internal combustion-engined models in the history of the automobile, along with benzeneand steam-powered cars from the beginning of the century.

‘CHAMPIONING CUTTING-EDGE NEW YORK The Big Apple is known for many things, and in terms of cars, it’s home to the most attended auto show in the world. Still a much more laid-back experience compared to Geneva, for over 115 years the New York International Auto Show has been one of the largest car shows in America and a place for carmakers to see and be seen. Ushering in the latest automotive trends, the New York International Auto Show showcases incredible collections championing cutting-edge design and extraordinary innovation. With more than four floors’ worth of displays from the world’s leading carmakers, the show features the newest vehicles and latest futuristic concept cars. Roughly 1,000 vehicles and trucks are displayed here annually at what is North America’s first auto show, dating back to the early 1900s.

HANOVER When the International Motor Show Germany IAA first took place in 1897, only eight motor cars were presented.

Since then, it has grown to be the world’s largest motor show in terms of physical space. Since 1991, the organizers have split the fair between two cities with odd-numbered years held in Frankfurt, and even-numbered in Hanover.

New models and outrageous concept cars are what most people crowd into a European motor show for, but last year’s IAA Cars installment in Frankfurt was a relatively subdued affair as Germany’s biggest carmakers were under scrutiny for their role in the ‘dieselgate’ emissions scandal. In 2018, Hanover hosts the IAA Commercial Vehicles, the world’s most important fair for mobility, transport and logistics. This is where technological trends are set and the show invites around 2,066 exhibitors from 45 countries.

WHICH MUSEUM STANDS OUT THE MOST IN YOUR MIND? The British Museum is such an established museum that has so many diverse artifacts from around the world. The first time I stepped into the British Museum, it blew me away with all the history it has to offer.

All the different Roman sculptures and Egyptian mummies will keep you coming back for more.

WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO EXPLORE A NEW DESTINATION? You have to first ask yourself what exactly are you looking for?

I always plan a new destination around culture, cuisine and history.

IT’S DINNERTIME AT YOUR FAVORITE RESTAURANT. WHERE ARE WE AND WHAT SHOULD WE ORDER? We are in Hawaii at ULU Ocean Grill + Sushi Lounge sitting at an open-air table overlooking the ocean while the sun is about to set over the water.

You have to try the tableside poke, as well the simply-prepared Hawaiian fish. A wonderful ambience paired with a unique Hawaiian cuisine.

WHAT DO YOU DO TO COMPLETELY UNWIND? I turn on music by Hans Zimmer, have a glass of pinot noir, and prepare a fantastic dinner for my family. This is relaxing to me as I have no pressure, no time constraints, and I am doing something that I have a true passion for. I feel like a kid in a candy shop!

WHERE CAN WE FIND THE MOST BREATHTAKING VIEW IN THE WORLD? Standing on the highest point of the Great Wall of China. The best way to experience such an amazing view is to stay at the Waldorf Astoria Beijing and take a day trip there. You feel so far away from all the hustle and bustle of Beijing.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR PROUDEST MOMENT? Winning the 2017 Taste of Waldorf Astoria competition hands down is my proudest moment.

When they called out Waldorf Astoria Park City as the winner I was in shock for a few minutes, and then quickly realized all the cameras were photographing us. It was such a satisfying feeling.

All the hard work paid off.
