MODULE 1: FIELD CONDITIONS
Instead of looking at an overall urban plan the notion of an urban program has been used. The field program allows for a rule based growth, adaptable to the changing needs of society and technology. An iteration process was used in order to determine the best site program for the 20 x 30 pleasure garden.

MODULE 2 : Defining the Figural elements From the program and field condition created, spaces and forms were created in order to populate the pleasure gardens. The buildings included on the site were: Accomodation Kitchen Shower Toilets Private function area Makerspace (sculptor’s) Art gallery for the sculptors to display work The idea around my site involved, creating an artists commune in which sculptors could come and make their work and display it onsite, whilst also looking after the pleasure gardens themselves. By doing so the gardens would be continually changing as new sculptors add and subtract their work, allowing the public to see engage not only in the gardens but also the artwork around them. The forms of my buildings were then not only influenced by my site condition but took on a sculptural aspect to fit in with the poetics of the site. All buildings apart from the private could be occupied from the ground level as well as the roof giving back the footprint taken on the earth.

The sleeping headquarters consists of a self supported enclosure, with Exercise Name Drawing Tittle Studio Beta wooden slats and glass bifold doors opening it up to the external. The FIGURE ELEMENTS ASSIGNMENT 2 & Earth AXO structure has 4 individualINDIVIDUAL rooms with sliding walls, allowing the building to work as a system able to adapt. For example if a family wished to stay the building, they could occupy 2-3 rooms by sliding the walls back to create 1 singulair space. Thus the rooms are adaptable to the needs of the occupants. 2700

The makers space consists of a concrete self supporting shell with glass bifold doors allowing the public to view the activities of the sculptors and connect the inside to the outside. The structure consists of a kiln in the middle, sinks and an adaptable table that can be moved around the floor for individual use or connected together for group collaboration.

The private pavillion can be used by the public or hired out for functions. The structure consists of a polycarbonate roof and glass and timber slatted walls, with a singular point of entrance. Inside it circulates an atrium allowing privacy from the outside world whilst also connecting the structure back to nature with the use of the atrium. The structure has a bar at the end and sunk in seating circulating around the building.

The gallery consists of multiple glass and timber slat bifold doors. The doors aim to change the way the artwork is perceived allowing infinite angles and points of entry into the pavillion. The doors allow the pavillion to adapt to the artist/sculptors work and intended use. One does not have to be in the gallery to view the work,allowing them to catch differing glimpses from differing angles around the site. The gallery 12000 essentially can change to suite ay program acting as a catalyst for 10000viewing.

The kitchen area consists of a concrete/grass roof held up by steel columns and enclosed by a glass and timber slat system. The space provides all the needed amenities for a functional kitchen catering for 10-12 people maximum. The structure opens up to the external environment or can be shut off with the use of the bifold doors. The table system can be split apart for a singular dining experience or joined together for a group experience. The kitchen is aimed at accommodating and providing group experiences for the occupants.

MODULE 3: Defining The Ground
The forms generated from the last assignment were then blended into the ground to create a fluid transition from ground to building. The use of trees, bushes and landscaping was looked into in order to provide shade, filtration, pathways and areas of seclusion and openness.

Overall Site Plan The use of trees near the sleeping pavilion provides privacy and filters the water run off through the use of planter beds. Rocks have also been used to enclose the planted area as well as offering affordances for seating. Deciduous trees are able to change through the seasons, providing shade in the summer and letting light in during the winter. The planter beds help to define pathways underneath, as well as providing spaces to connect back to the elements. The larger trees allow those on the second level to connect with nature on the elevated walkways. The landscaping has again followed the patterns formed in the field condition.
Sections The sections help to define the internal and external spaces, highlighting the quality and function of each space.

MODULE 4: Blending Figure and Ground Taking on feedback from the last assignment the sections were improved and perspectives were used to get a feel for the site. an axonometric was generated to show the full program and final completion of the site. A diagrammatic 3d model was also created to show the depth and feel of a particular moment in the site.

Initial site renders for the axo were not used as my tutor and I felt they detracted away from the site to much. Making it look plastic and to cartoonish.

Final section: 3D model The model helps to illustrate the quality of the sleeping and the gallery space, as well as highlighting the connection the structure has, inset into the ground.
Perspectives The perspectives aim to show special moments throughout the site, highlighting the poetics and ephemeral nature of the lighting and spaces. Illustrating how the spaces connect to the outside and how the site can be experienced throughout different times of the day, internally and externally.
Research
Both the teachings from A pattern language and collective form from Maki have influenced my design. By looking at an overall field condition instead of a fixed site plan I was able to generate a set of rules and systems that my design could adapt from.
Jorn Utzon’s Kingo Houses also influenced my decision to follow the contours of the site. Instead of placing boxs along the site I chose to find forms from the contours.
Research
Sanaa architects also proved influential in both their Hiroshi Senju Museum and Moriyama House. The Moriyama house proved most influential, in the idea of spliting up the functions of a normal household into individual spaces on a site.
Steven Holl’s art gallery proved influential in the use of alternating doors and angles to change the way art can be percieved and enjoyed in my own gallery.
Reflection As a whole I am extremely happy with the concepts and overall site put forward. I found it very difficult to document such fluid forms initially, and at some points was pressed for time due to this. There are areas of documentation I would still like to improve on, in terms of line weights and printing. Yet as a whole I have learned a great deal this semester and hope to carry on these teachings and ethics of design into the future.
