How to Use Nylon Fish Tape

How to Use Nylon Fish Tape? Most of us have probably heard the term ‘fish tape’, but what in the world is it? It is a simple tool that electricians use to pull wire through electrical conduit. A fish tape is basically a long, thin, flat steel wire wound up inside a donut-shaped wheel with a sturdy handle. That explains the other part of the name, but what about the fish part? Because it is nearly impossible to push a wire through a conduit, you must first "fish" the tape through the conduit. At the other end, usually at an electrical box, you must attach the wires to the fish tape in order to pull them through the conduit. Conduit is a metal or plastic pipe similar to plumbing pipe which is used only for protecting electrical wiring.

Attaching the wires To attach multiple wires to a nylon fish tape, strip the outer insulation from the wires and wrap the bare wires through the eye on the end of the fish tape. Try twisting a strand around all of the wires attached and wrap the whole head of the wire connection with the electrical tape. Adding wire pulling lubricant makes the pull easier. When electricians use a fish tape to pull in a rope, then use the rope for the wire pull. Although the steel wire is both stout and flexible, it is not a good idea to pull an excessively heavy amount of load with this tool.
