The 1727 DuBois-Kiersted House Home of the Saugerties Historical Society

N

owhere in the Empire state is there a prettier spot than Saugerties.

Located in the northeastern part of Ulster County at the foot of the famous Catskill Mountains, where the gentle Esopus Creek empties

itself into the lordly Hudson river, a more charming place can scarcely be imagined. This description of Saugerties from 1898 still resonates today. Settled in its early days by the Dutch, purchased from the natives in 1677 by New York Governor Edmund Andros for a piece of cloth, a shirt, a loaf of bread and blaize for socks, the Dutch influence on the community is unmistakable. Many beautiful stone houses fill the landscape showing the rich culture that first built the community. In 1710 the Palatines arrived seeking refuge along the shores of the Hudson bringing many families who are still present today. In 1825, industrialist Henry Barclay arrived in Saugerties with a vision to build an industrial community complete with an iron works and a paper mill. At the time of his arrival there were only 21 houses in the community, but by 1870 there were approximately 4000 people living in just the village. Over 2000 men were involved in quarrying the unique bluestone found here. This bluestone was used to build the site known today as Opus 40. The Village of Saugerties, which is lined with beautiful Victorian buildings, is the first business district in the United States to be placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Saugerties Pronounced Saw-ger-tees What’s in a name? In the 1650s Barent Cornelis Volge operated a sawmill on the Sawyer's Kill, supplying lumber for the manor of Rensselaerswick. The name Saugerties means "Little Sawyer" in Dutch. He had secured a title from the Esopus Sachem to this lands sometime before 1663.Volge likely left the area at the outbreak of the first Esopus War in 1658. The "footpath to Albany" was not laid out until 1670. In April 1677 Governor Edmund Andros purchased land of from the Esopus Indian Kaelcop, chief of the Amorgarickakan tribe for the price of a piece of cloth, a blanket, some coarse fiber, a loaf of bread, and a shirt. The Mynderse House was built by John Persen, formerly of Kingston, an early mill owner, around 1685. Saugerties, New York is the only town in the world with that name!
