Shelter There’s a slightly cringe-worthy, if humorous, family anecdote that has stuck with me for nearly four decades: When I was a kid, we moved into a new home in the Miami suburbs, and one of the house’s quirkier features was that its living room, directly opposite the front door, was “sunken,” or a step below the main level of the rest of the house. The fact that it was entirely carpeted with plush, hunter green deep shag (very Miami) made the room that much more of an aesthetic anomaly.

An aunt from Michigan was our first guest the day after we moved in and as she entered, my brother, rather dramatically, greeted her with a sweeping arm motion and said, “Please come in— and enjoy our sunken living room.” I thought I would die of embarrassment.

Who says that? The joke was on me as my aunt told my brother how much she loved the living room and went on and on about how beautiful and special it was.

A step lower and the room is suddenly an architectural marvel? I wasn’t buying it. That childhood living room was my first experience in consciously considering design. I’ve been paying attention ever since.

Early in my career, I was drawn to interior design publications— Architectural Digest, Elle Décor, House Beautiful—collectively known as “shelter” magazines in the industry. I used to smile at

that designation. Shelter had such a warm, comforting connotation that belied the high-wire intensity of many of the players in the category.

But, no matter, shelter remains the perfect word to embody the stunning homes those glossy titles showcase month in, month out.

Like many of you, I suspect, my experience with interior design came out of knowing what I didn’t like, more than how to put together what I did like. Not unlike my relationship with art, I can’t actually paint what I want, but I can tell you what’s definitely not going up on my walls. For nearly two decades in Manhattan, in some half a dozen apartments, interior design wasn’t something I thought about a lot.

How could I? My smallish living spaces coupled with my luxe tastes weren’t the friend of a careerfirst guy in NYC. Then, adulthood.

The first important piece of furniture I bought—from the Museum of Modern Art no less—was the classic Herman Miller-designed Eames Chair and Ottoman—and then the objets d’art and interior design avalanche began for me in earnest. What an exhilarating, if expensive, experience. Over time, I realized I loved mixing clean, modern rooms with antique, warm moments throughout. Not terribly original, perhaps, but very me. After years and years of aesthetic uncertainty, my house had finally become my shelter.

Shelter. What a beautiful word to come home to.

Born and raised in New Jersey, I’ve always relished the changing seasons we experience, and over the years I’ve noticed that each new season brings with it just enough transformation to keep this Aries on her toes. Every three months we’re handed the perfect occasion to refresh, reboot and reinvent.

Similarly, HudsonMOD will never be spared this deep-rooted passion for constant change and improvement.

As you’ll find in the pages of this issue, we’ve been paying close attention to the fashions that graced the runway during the recent Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week and have even received advice from coveted designers and one very notable celebrity stylist. With all of this motivation to put our best foot forward—in this season’s hottest shoes, naturally—we hope you follow suit and stay in touch with HudsonMOD even after you’ve finished reading this issue. lanked by farmland with timeless, weather-beaten barns, “Safe House,” designed by polish architect robert Konieczny, is in the pastoral countryside just outside of Warsaw and weds design with practicality, security with fluidity and unprecedented bunkerlike attributes with a luxe country home. Simply put, there isn’t a home like this anywhere else on Earth. powered by an electric engine, the building works as—and is, in fact—a fine-tuned machine. Block shutters 11-and-a-half feet wide by 9 feet high, as well as a movable steel truss wall, may be closed, turning the property into a rough looking cuboid that leaves the house, and the homeowner, heavily fortified at night, or in a moment’s notice.

But by simply flipping a switch, the entire bulwark—including the shutters, gates and draw bridge connecting the terrace—swings open, exposing an alluring modern home within, covered with translucent windows to soak up the sun. And during the unforgiving frigid polish winter when there is only two hours of sunlight, having walled apertures makes the home incredibly energy efficient as well.

Konieczny, who holds advanced degrees from Silesian University of Technology and the New Jersey institute of Technology, collaborated with various structural engineers, architects and interior designers to turn what he calls his “highly intelligent passive building” into a reality. Bridging the enormous gap between design and functionality, Safe House could very well be an expression of how luxury homes will change in the immediate future. Becoming smarter, stronger, and sexier, a less independent house and more a product of the environment to which it belongs. But, for now, Safe House stands very much alone.

aws dropped in her path as Halle Berry sauntered down the red carpet and towards the Dolby Theatre during the recent Academy Awards. looking as chic as we’ve come to expect she will, Berry was radiant in a strong-shouldered silver and black striped Versace gown that we instantly dubbed “The Dress.”

On-trend with metallics all over the runway and paired with a plunging neckline and cutouts, it was apparent that every detail of the dress was designed with her shape in mind—and it was.

The Oscar winner’s dress had been specifically created for her by Donatella Versace to make Berry look like a classic Bond girl, and this undeniably gorgeous dress with a mysterious edge is the result.

Though some may attribute Berry’s most memorable Bond moment to when she emerged from the ocean in a curve-hugging orange bikini in Die Another Day, we think this gown is a fitting homage to the glamour of the women who’ve graced the screen alongside 007.

Where’s your favorite retreat? i love to sit in the tree house my husband built in a red maple tree in our backyard. it’s my sanctuary. it started out as a space for the kids, but it’s definitely an adult retreat now.

t’s a curious thing this JFK to LAX commute. As an editor in chief of celebrity magazines for a couple of decades now—oh, how time has literally flown— the New York City to Los Angeles round trip has been a staple of my work life as dependable as my constant dealings with snarky publicists, stubborn photographers and egomaniacal stars. But there’s something about those six hours aboard a steel flying machine that often trump the reason for my trip, and I find myself looking forward to the flight more than arriving at that sun-drenched playground.

Being fortunate to enjoy first-class travel over the years, I’ve met some of the world’s biggest names in that most private of sanctuaries, the far forward cabin of an airplane. And more often than not, the celebrities aboard have also done that particular flight as frequently as you, thus a natural kinship forms. The unspoken rule applies: What is said at 30,000 feet stays at 30,000 feet. The colorful tales I’ve been told in my quarter century of doing this seriously boggles the mind. Seriously.

On this particular occasion, I’m heading to the City of Angels to meet the enigmatic and beautiful Karina Smirnoff, undeniably one of the big reasons millions tune in week in, week out to ABC’s monster smash competition show, Dancing With The Stars. As one of the regular professionals paired with “stars,” Smirnoff’s own fame usually exceeds the so-called celebrity she’s tasked to teach treacherous dance routines.

And the results are nothing short of telegenic ratings magic. More on Smirnoff’s guiles in a bit, but first, I have a plane to catch.

Now, one Karina Smirnoff awaits.

As a semi-regular viewer of Dancing With The Stars, I’ve always been drawn to Smirnoff, but not so much for her more obvious traits, but for her all-too-apparent desire for perfection.

I’ve always been fascinated by perfectionists, and Smirnoff had all the makings of the little girl in class who always had the answers and always got the “A.” But that little girl didn’t always grow up to be the happiest and that, too, interested me. Beneath those impossibly glitzy, revealing outfits, was Karina Smirnoff actually happy? And, frankly, why did I care so much? Oh, but I did.

All of this subtext was suddenly thrust to the fore a few months ago when Smirnoff, paired with 2007 DWTS champion and multiple Olympic gold medalist, Apolo Anton Ohno, for the All-Stars edition, unexpectedly— shockingly—fell hard during a difficult hip-hop routine, and she broke down in front of America on live television. There stood the gorgeous perfectionist, the over-achieving world champion in a heap of emotion simply because she, for once, had a crushing human experience. Smirnoff was never as interesting or compelling as she was at that moment: Vulnerable, raw, embarrassed. I couldn’t wait to see how Smirnoff would handle her subsequent dance with Ohno. Predictably, they were never better—sharp, joyful, connected—and I still believe that televised public take-down may have been the best thing to ever happen to Smirnoff’s image. It made her just a little more like the rest of us.

Karina Smirnova was born January 2, 1978, in Kharliv, Ukraine, then part

of the Soviet Union. By the time Smirnoff started walking it was evident she suffered from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and her parents enrolled her in myriad activities—figure skating, gymnastics, ballet, piano, aerobics— anything to exhaust their daughter enough so she could sleep. prior to her tenth birthday, Smirnoff discovered her passion for ballroom dancing and dropped everything else to focus exclusively on this athletic, demanding pursuit. Good move.

At 14, Smirnoff’s promising dancing career was placed on hold when her family immigrated to the US, settling in New york City. As Smirnoff focused on academics, dancing wasn’t as big a priority while she

Undoubtedly impressed with Smirnoff’s stunning features and impeccable dance credentials, the producers of Dancing With The Stars asked Smirnoff to join the third season of the show and she was instantly paired with suave television host

and became engaged on New year’s Eve that year only to break up nine months later prior to the wedding.

Just a month later, Smirnoff began seeing professional baseball player Brad penny and they, too, announced their engagement a year later only to call it quits in late 2011. For six romance-filled, roller-coaster years, Smirnoff became the inadvertent, reluctant poster child for public celebrity heartbreak. One is left to wonder: is the famously strong Smirnoff going to be OK after so much personal disappointment? i came to los Angeles to get some answers.

But the lure of dance was too strong, and Smirnoff resumed her training with top professionals in NyC. After five years of respectable international results in the professional dance circuit, Smirnoff came into her own as a powerhouse in 2001 when— partnered with fellow Ukrainian, Slavik

and actor (and agile mover) mario lópez. They came in second place in a disputed final—i don’t think there’s any question in most people’s minds that lópez and Smirnoff were by far the best dancers in the competition.

Now, this is the part of the Karina Smirnoff story that gets just a touch sensitive: the famous men.

Smirnoff and lópez started dating seriously during DWTS and broke up two years later in 2008. A minute later—or so it seemed—Smirnoff began dating fellow Ukrainian dancer (and the breakout male professional on the show) maksim Chmerkovskiy

Smirnoff is also a seasoned “house flipper” (savvy real estate investor) and fulfilled one of her important goals by finally winning Dancing With The Stars and the coveted mirror ball trophy during Season 13 paired with soap opera star Jr martínez.

Smirnoff—as in all aspects of her life— was no longer the bridesmaid, but the bride. She buried her “Susan lucci of professional dance” moniker once and for all. Hallelujah!

Smirnoff is tiny, bubbly and a true girl’s girl—real, sassy, blunt. When

i approach her as we settle in for what would become an interminably long day and evening for the cover story photo shoot and interview, she looks right at me and says, “Hi! i’m so excited!” Seeing that reaction from the dancing diva, i said, “Are you ready to have some fun and play dress up?” She squealed—literally squealed—and screamed: “Are you kidding? Yes!” Now that’s the right way to start my day way up in the hills of Hollywood.

One of Smirnoff’s close friends— and Season 12 DWTS partner—actor/ director ralph macchio, just gave Smirnoff the opportunity of starring in a film he wrote and directed about a ten-year-old boy who becomes fascinated with a beautiful yet troubled older woman he sees dancing in a neighboring house.

Smirnoff plays the dancer and the movie just wrapped filming in New york City. Smirnoff couldn’t be more excited. “i absolutely love ralph macchio and working on this film has been one of the greatest joys in my life. i can’t wait for everyone to see it.”

But the thing to take away from Karina Smirnoff is her determined, can-do attitude to any task before her, her burning desire to have children as soon as possible and her constant self-exploration.

Breaking it down, leaving Smirnoff’s presence there’s a little less light, a little less truth leaves the room with her. in a town known for a cacophony of celebrity BS, it’s downright shocking to sit down and hear the unvarnished truth from someone so well known.

When i ask her the million-dollar question: is the perfectionist, driven, smart girl actually happy? Smirnoff answers the only way she knows how, completely honestly: “yes, almost—i’m almost happy.” Here’s hoping she gets there. She’s certainly put in the work.

As candid and loving and appealing as Karina Smirnoff is during our curlup-on-the-sofa conversation, i find myself wishing i was sitting next to her on a midday JFK-lAX flight with several cocktails in front of us and nothing but sky—and gossipy truth—in front of us. Now that’s a conversation i would love to have. you would, too. Believe me.

At 14, you found yourself in the US and in New York City, no less. i recently learned the reason we left Ukraine when i was 14 was because crime was spiraling and it became too dangerous for us to stay. When i arrived in the US, i was afraid to speak at all in school. Everything was so different. i would run home from school and try to learn English from watching television shows. Friends and Saved By The Bell were two shows i always watched.

How did you manage a double major at Fordham University while pursuing dancing on the side? my parents didn’t want dancing to be the sole focus of my life. So i pursued two degrees with the intention of attending law school when i graduated. So i danced and went to college at the same time. Crazy. i remember this guy from England approached me and i found out he was among the top five dancers in the world and he asked me to dance with him at a tryout. By then i knew this is what i wanted to do with my career. To be able to dance with paul Killick is like winning the lottery, but my mom wasn’t happy at all. i went to london for a year and came back and graduated from Fordham. it was tough, but i kept my promise to my mom. Something i’m proud of.

it is unquestionably the hardest thing you’ll ever do. Those three months of your life will be the most thrilling and the most frustrating you’ll ever experience. it thrusts a connection with another human being you didn’t know was possible. it pushes you to do things you weren’t even aware you were capable of doing. it’s an incredible journey, plain and simple.

yes, absolutely, the fear of failing on national television and the fear of making a fool of yourself.

You purchased a home in New Jersey nearly a decade ago. How did you come to that decision? i had lived in every borough of New york City—manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens, Staten island—and i

was tired of not having enough room for my shoes and purses, so i gave New Jersey a look. i love it there. i’ve been there since 2004.

Tell me something great about New Jersey everyone should know.

New Jersey is actually a really cool place to live. it’s beautiful and lush— very green. i always love going to New york City and then i get to drive back home to my huge backyard in Jersey.

Tell me about the hard fall you had dancing with Apolo Anton Ohno last season. It looked serious.

The fall was the direct result of me looking at the taped package of Apolo and i rehearsing just prior to dancing live. During the segment, i came across so awful, dropping so many f-bombs and it really looked as if i hated hip hop and that i didn’t know that style of dance. By the time we had to dance, i was pretty destroyed. i was raised so well and turning into a potty-mouthed sailor on national TV, well, it destroyed me. By the time we started dancing, i already had tears in my eyes. The fall wasn’t a surprise to me, but with that much adrenalin, i didn’t feel the pain until later. i was just so embarrassed. But i must say, i learned from it: No more f-bombs from me, that i promise you.

How much input do you have about which partner you have ?

We have some input. Gavin DeGraw, for example, and i knew each other prior to him being my dance partner.

Was winning DWTS with JR Martínez one of your best moments of your life?

Oh yes, it’s within my top three moments for sure. The instant we won it felt so unreal. i was so happy for him—still am.

Describe your perfect day. in paris, i’d go to a café for some croissants and a little people watching with someone i care about, before strolling and window-shopping along the gorgeous streets.

When was the last time you cried?

When i realized the last relationship i was in, when i was engaged to be married, wasn’t going to happen. it

was a complete shock because i thought he was the one, and i was wrong. i was so wrong.

An Asian-Inspired Apartment Is Pared Down To Its Sophisticated Essentials

“Design, wisdom and beauty, in no particular order,” is the intent manhattan interior designer Andy Goldsborough ascribes to his terrific blog www.thegildedowl.com.

“That’s how i approach my design work.

Each project helps me to gain a deeper knowledge of history, craftsmanship and the art of living.”

As a writer and editor on the design and architecture beats for more than two decades—and now as HudsonmOD’s design editor—i could borrow Goldsborough’s motto as my own. The shapes of interesting things and how they got that way intrigue me—from spoons to cities, light bulbs to landscapes. On every assignment i learn something new. Over the years i have traveled to report on the design scenes in moscow, london, Stockholm, Barcelona and milan among other destinations, yet the lure of the treasures that await within a local antiques shop on a New Jersey back road cues my aesthetic radar with equal fervor.

Some of my favorite design moments are burned into my consciousness. They have included a visit to the Kremlin in the rain and circling Frank Gehry’s Guggenheim museum Bilbao at twilight and a pilgrimage to design master Gustav Stickley’s 1911 Craftsman Farms estate in morris plains.

A sense of discovery and a curiosity about the way we live now—and how they did back then—are hallmarks of both solid journalism and good design. i believe a well-designed room should convey the layered histories of the people who reside within: Treasures from travels, art purchased together to mark a milestone in a relationship, books or textiles or totems of special significance. Don’t you connect with a room that showcases authentic personal style as much as a display of possessions with a pedigree?

After many years of living comfortably in your home, have you ever imagined what it would be like to live a leaner, cleaner life, decoratively speaking?

Without emptying every room of your favorite furnishings and possessions to achieve an austere minimalism, could you benefit from a pareddown, lighter look? The longtime owners of a luxury Upper East Side apartment recently took such a leap of faith to simplify and refine their three-bedroom home after more than two decades at the residence.

Working with Goldsborough, the clients aimed to create a serene, largely monochromatic environment that would showcase their passion for collecting Asian art and objects.

As a backdrop for the bed, an F. Schumacher wallpaper features a silver satin foil ground overlayed with a Chinoiserie pattern, subtly underscoring the household’s Asian theme. or a young couple retreating from apartment living in New york City to establish their first home in New Jersey, a 6,600-square-foot, newly constructed house in mountain lakes proved a large-scale canvas upon which to explore their creativity.

The investment banker husband and his wife, a new mom who was in marketing for a luxury boutique hotel chain, began collecting paintings and sculptures with an eye toward color and scale to fill their new abode. To aid them in enhancing the house with custom furnishings, layered textures and vibrant color, they enlisted the discerning eye of interior designer Tere Bresin of Beret Design Group in Upper montclair. “The house was still in the final stages of construction, so we were able to plan the moldings, fireplace details, ceiling coffers and lighting, the finishing touches that give a home character,” Bresin says.

The home has some arts-and-crafts design roots and classic proportions, plus a beautiful staircase. Because

gentleman reclines on a plush sofa, a newspaper opened like veranda doors obscuring everything but his legs, with one adorning the other in an l shape. To his immediate right, three ladies sit comfortably and talk, their conversation uninterrupted as a waiter sets down on a table their mid-afternoon cocktails. Across the room, a couple sit in intimate, carefree silence, lounging in the welcoming glow of the sunlight streaming through the windows.

While this scene could take place anywhere, it is a moment that few share. What these people are enjoying is their exclusive admission into a private club in the New york City metropolitan area; though what exactly the interior looks like depends on which side it falls on the Hudson river.

Here, in the shadow of the greatest city in the world, this feeling of aristocracy is heightened in immeasurable ways. While you can clink champagne glasses in the parlor of a Northern New Jersey country club, you can also toast with the same enjoyment in the stylings of a posh manhattan private club later that evening. The act is the same, but the mood is entirely different—each invokes an expression of the adjacent areas to which it is incalculably tied.

Evolving in their own ways, the private clubs of this area offer a unique dichotomy for those lucky enough to have the coveted memberships. While the country clubs of New Jersey have changed over generations from their more humble beginnings, catering only to gentlemen golfers, some of

the more private clubs in manhattan are relatively new and devoted to entertaining city-dwellers. yet, what they both share is something more appealing; something F. Scott Fitzgerald alluded to when he wrote, “The world, as a rule, does not live on beaches and in country clubs.”

Belonging to these clubs means having an added amenity more prized than an 18-hole golf course or a bar filled with celebrity socialites. it means having the privilege of stealing a moment of serenity by keeping the rest of the world out.

There is something about these places—characterized by a short list, a private space and a locked door—that drives our species wild.

There’s a desire to be included on that guest list, to be invited to that special club.

Now more than ever, private clubs fill an important space lacking in most people’s lives—the meeting place. This space, constantly evolving since ancient times from tavern to house to the modern day clubhouse, functions in much the same way as it did millennia before. in bringing together like-minded people with

similar interests, the private club occupies our need to socialize, in person, with individuals who are very much present. Whether on the links of a country club or enveloped in the sumptuous sofas of your favorite metropolitan club’s lounge, these places drive interaction between members. A rare commodity. though wealth may be a common denominator when it comes to privilege, there will always be some things even money can’t buy. As it should be.

Norwood Club on the major crosstown strip that is 14th Street in lower manhattan lies a private club that is as irregular as the area it calls home. Stepping into the building, one can almost feel the electricity of a bohemian artist society bursting forth from every painting and beneath every stairwell. the figurative sparks of the space are intentional, or so says its british founder and chief proprietor, Alan linn. his private society, the norwood Club, is relatively new to a space that has a history all its own.

founded in 2007, the norwood is named after Andrew S. norwood, the original wealthy merchant who built the fledgling property in the middle of the 19th century, when manhattan was mostly expansive farmland. Since that time, the townhouse has changed hands but has stayed intact. now it is considered a landmark—listed by the national register of historic places and the new york City landmarks preservation Commission. the owners, linn and his partner Steve ruggi, purchased the property with every intention to keep the interior more or less the same. A work of early Victorian architecture, the five floors boast Cuban mahogany doors, stained glass and a fusion of greek revival and italianate architecture. but, what really impresses is the interior design that has been added to enliven the space—it just pops. enlisting the help of the designer Simon

Jones grew up playing on courses he now carefully reconstructs. A native of montclair, he received a degree from yale University, went on to graduate study at Harvard and, perhaps most significantly, was the recipient of

tutelage from his father, robert Trent Jones, a master craftsman of greens known the world over.

After beginning his own eponymous golf architect company in 1974, Jones has remodeled or designed more than 170 golf courses in his career. These include both international and domestic courses, seven pGA Championships, seven US Opens—and for those adventurous enough to install a golf course in their backyard—his firm also builds links at private (extraordinary) residences.

Though rees Jones could base his massively successful business literally anywhere on the planet, he decided to stay close to home and chose montclair as the headquarters for his famed company. A man of vision, creativity and warmth, Jones’ list of awards is as impressive as any golf pro (he boasts a handicap of 9.6 and a career round of 71). pinning the busy Jones down wasn’t easy, but once we did we chatted about his various projects, what gives a New Jersey golf course its specific personality and the new design trends that await golfers. anessa Deleon’s career path reads a little like a fairy tale; a rags-to-riches story of sorts that—when considering all that she has accomplished thus far—has all the makings of a happy ending. Her happily ever after, however, won’t be obtained via fairy godmother or sheer luck. It’s her determination, savvy business skills and many talents that will propel her career as both a soughtafter interior designer and television personality.

Inspired by her Cuban roots, Deleon credits her flourishing career to the entrepreneurship and strong will that her family instilled in her from an early age.

Though Deleon originally envisioned herself one day dressing celebrities as a stylist, the interior design classes she took while enrolled at Manhattan’s legendary Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) sparked her interest and steered her path in a new direction. Her schooling, coupled with a part-time job at her family-owned furniture store, found Deleon not only surrounded by the tools to take on the profession, but the ideal clientele.

“A lot of clients purchasing furniture would want me then to come to their homes to pick out paint colors,

After completing her degree, Deleon enrolled in classes for interior

design and simultaneously launched her business, Vanessa Deleon Associates.

She was all of 21. Without missing a beat, Deleon took advantage of the opportunity to showcase her talents on the first season of the interior design themed hit reality show, Design Star, on HGTV. “The show changed my career pretty substantially,” Deleon says. “As soon as the show finished, the notoriety led to me doing a lot of great work.”

By 2007 Deleon was honored with the IFDA New York’s Rising Star of Interior Design award, and her work was regularly being featured in numerous design publications and gaining recognition from distinguished groups, including the American Society

With momentum building, Deleon’s business began contracting commercial space and high-end clientele, while Deleon herself pursued television opportunities following her appearance on Design Star. HGTV shows, Deleon has become a familiar face. Second to her television success on Design Star would likely be her role alongside celebrity chef Robert Irvine on the Food Network’s popular series Restaurant: Impossible. Armed with the task of transforming a failing restaurant in just two days, Irvine—also the program’s host—enlists the help of professionals to complete the revamp, including Deleon.

Were the restaurants depicted in the show transformed in two days?

Sure. Were there dozens of assistants and contractors behind the scenes who were never shown on camera? Absolutely.

“I always say, ‘At the end of the day, it’s TV’, so what you see isn’t necessarily always what it is,” Deleon says. “In this situation, there’s a lot of pro bono work being done in the background that a lot of people don’t realize.”

And the Vanessa Deleon we saw on the first season of HGTV’s Design Star?

“They definitely took the New York attitude that we all have—without it we couldn’t survive in this world— and stepped it up a notch,” she says.

“We’re go-getters, we don’t mind working hard. We have that sort of je ne sais quoi about us. We may be too fast for someone else and that may look too aggressive or that may look like we’re trying too hard. But no, that’s just our character.”

It’s that same metropolitan-grown determination that Deleon points to as the basis for much of her success.

And the go-getter attitude that doesn’t allow for complacency continues to drive her in all aspects of her career.

“In New York City, everyone wants to be on top and they all have that goal,” Deleon says. “It has shaped me as an individual, as a woman, as a designer. Not that I want to be better than anybody because I never look to my left or my right. I focus on me.

But I have that sense of I can be better because I want to be. I critique myself every single day and I’m hard on myself, and I feel just that alone fuels me for tomorrow.”

enturies ago, longevity wasn’t exactly an attribute of heretics. Considered at best traitors—and at worst aligned with the devil—nonconformists, blasphemers and renegades typically ended up at the wrong end of a pointy stick. Nowadays, of course, it pays to be something of an iconoclast. At least that’s the idea behind Ecosse Moto Works’ visually bespoken, high-octane bellwether, the Heretic, and its cadre of delightfully wicked, luxury motorcycles.

The modern day evil genius behind the Heretic is one Donald Atchison. Once a Marine Corps officer, Atchison holds an MBA in mechanical engineering and a serious need to shatter expectations. A motorcycle enthusiast, Atchison was formerly a downhill skier, road racer and dirt bike riding speed freak. He founded Ecosse more than a decade ago to bring his creation to life.

Atchison began developing his idea for a high-end street bike worthy of exclusive furnishings, unprecedented design and aggressive performance.

Napkin sketches and early drafts from his days as a business developer eventually took shape. In 2003, the first road-ready models were released for a small group of selected aficionados and collectors. And just like that, the Heretic became a staple of high-performance artisan motorcycles everywhere.

To commemorate the ten-year anniversary of crafting mercurial “anti-choppers,” Ecosse designed the Founder’s Edition Titanium XX, an even more radical V-Twin than its impressive predecessors.

While the exclusive FE Ti XX (just 13 are slated to be made) is stylistically similar to the Heretic model, Atchison is quick to note that the most important features of the bike are

wholly unique. Take the undercarriage.

A first of its kind, the trellis-style chassis and colorless coils of the exhaust system are painstakingly handcrafted from titanium. Aside from being expensive, strong and highly resistant to corrosion, titanium is also incredibly light: At only 440 lbs., the bike delivers on all cylinders.

Before the four riders of the apocalypse get astride their malevolent steeds for the first and last time, they would be wise to take a side trip to the Ecosse Moto factory near Denver and consider the alternative to demon horsepower: American torque.

The FE Ti XX is like a timeless piece of art that you can mount, kick-start, throw back the throttle and explore the forbidden speeds with the help of a more than 200 horsepower, 2409cc billet engine that delivers more than 200 feet-lbs. of torque to the rear wheel at sea level. Buoyed by MotoGP-grade Öhlins suspension, the power screaming away underneath the rider is intoxicating, allowing the street bike to punish turns and straightaways with indifference. You can even embellish it with your own personal message. Try having as much fun with that priceless painting in your living room. Go ahead, I’ll wait.

While Ecosse maintains a cultish following with its satisfied customers, they’re relatively low profile compared with other limited-production street bike manufacturers. But by moving away from its staple V-Twins to pursue F1-derived superbikes and crossovers—and with models currently in development—the future looks just as promising as the past decade.

Not too bad for a heretic sect hidden somewhere in the Rockies.

t’s hard to resist Brad Goreski.

From the reed-thin Canadian’s first on-screen appearance as the endearingly (overly?) sensitive junior assistant to Hollywood celebrity überstylist Rachel Zoe, Goreski was the puppy in the window we had to take home. And, boy, did we ever.

Oh, way less than last year! [Laughs] This season you’ll see me as more of a boss since I have two new assistants. There’s big drama coming their way, of course, but I’m no Miranda Priestley as a boss. Even when I’m mean, I’m nice. [Laughs]

A day off—an entire day that I’m not married to my iPhone.

What’s the biggest fashion mistake women make?

It’s this ongoing fascination with comfort. Sweat pants and borderline pajamas are not OK outside the home.

Easiest fashion fix?

Straying outside their comfort zone: If you wear sweats, try jeans. If you wear jeans, try a pencil skirt. Just push your boundaries a little bit.

Do you realize how many young people you’ve helped?

I wasn’t aware until I went on my book tour last year in the US and Canada. I think it’s very important to emphasize to all young people—gay or straight—that the kids who

Who’s Hollywood’s best-dressed?

Well, besides my clients, Rooney Mara has a very individual style that I love. She’s completely unique. Diane Kruger is another contender, and you can’t go wrong with the classic Helen Mirren—I think her look is effervescent with a wink-wink to the audience.

In five years you’re doing what?

I’m really happy where things are now, but I’d love to see the Brad Goreski brand grow. I hope my business is at a different level in five years, but I’m still styling.

Any experience with New Jersey.

I’m friends with [Real Housewives Of New Jersey star] Caroline Manzo, whom I love. And at a book signing in New Jersey last year I met the chicest 11-year-old I’ve ever seen.

I wear $19.99 slippers with memory foam around the house. What’s so funny, Richard? It’s true! [Laughs]
