What are we really putting on—and in—to our bodies?

INVISIBLE, NOISELESS AND SOMETIMES LACKING EVEN A DISTINCT ODOR ARE the numerous toxins and chemicals we expose ourselves to every day. After picking up our necessities at the store, we trust our purchases will keep our families healthy or, at the least, not present a danger. That blind trust includes an unending list of foreign ingredients found in deodorants, shampoos, conditioners, soaps, detergents, seemingly everything.

We cannot avoid exposure to these ingredients altogether. In small doses and in most cases, our health isn’t impacted severely. However, here are four products to watch out for:

Tampons

Vinyl Shower Curtains After unwrapping a new shower curtain from its packaging, we’re struck by the scent of newness.

It’s fresh but distinctly chemical, we realize, as we hook the curtain through the shower’s rings. That chemical odor comes from more than a hundred different volatile organic compounds (VOCs). A number of these are toxic, notably phthalates. Phthalates are used to soften plastics and help scents and chemicals bind together. That means, even after the new smell dissipates, phthalates are still present.

Phthalates are known to be endocrine disruptors, therefore affecting adolescent children the most. In fact, six types were routinely found in children's toys such as rattles, pacifiers and teething rings before they were deemed unsafe and banned by Congress. Studies also suggest that phthalates cause asthma and negatively affect the kidneys and male reproductive system.

To avoid phthalates, invest in curtains made of natural fibers such as cotton, hemp or linen, hydrophobic curtains made of nylon or polyester, or simply use a glass door instead.

With tampons, women might not know what they’re putting into their bodies. Since the FDA considers tampons medical devices, companies aren’t obligated to disclose a full list of their ingredients. Yet, according to experts’ claims, tampons are potentially hazardous to the body because of phthalates and dioxins, which are highly toxic and known human carcinogens, states the World Health Organization.

Ami Zota, assistant professor of environmental health at George Washington University, reports that the chemicals found in tampons are easily absorbed by the vaginal mucosa. They then enter the bloodstream and travel throughout the body. Sometimes, small fibers break off when tampons are removed, creating a breeding ground for bacteria. This can lead to the deadly toxic shock syndrome.

When it comes to feminine care, look for transparency in ingredients and composition.

Avoid fragranced powders, tampons and vaginal douches, as well.

HEALTH

Sulfate-Rich Soaps, Toothpastes and Shampoos Many of the foamy soaps and shampoos get bubbly because of sodium laureth sulfate (SLES). After a rinse under warm water, that soft foam makes our hands feel cleaner, but this is an illusion. In fact, SLES is often contaminated by 1,4-dioxane, a human carcinogen, during the ethoxylation process. 1,4-dioxane is a synthetic chemical also found in antifreeze, paint strippers and varnishes. It’s also not biodegradable.

While many companies have begun to add an extra purification step, enabling their products to be 1,4-dioxane free, this is difficult to ascertain because the FDA does not require companies to disclose if their products contain traces of 1,4-dioxane. Consumers, as a result, are left in the dark.

While that soapy, bubbly lather makes washing fun, perhaps it’s time to consider other brands if the product label doesn’t explicitly read: 1,4-dioxane free.

Products With Palm Oil Palm oil is widely found in lotions, soaps, moisturizers, shampoos and a number of other cosmetics.

However, as its market grows, so potentially do deforestation, climate change, habitat destruction and harm to animals and indigenous peoples. In fact, according to the World Wide Fund for Nature, an estimated 300 football fields of rainforest are lost every hour to palm oil production. Animals are killed and lose their habitats, while water, air and soil are polluted. Without forests and their carbonstoring capabilites, the climate can drastically change.

The indigenous peoples, notably of Malaysia, suffer the brunt of these consequences. Human rights are violated, as children are forced to work long hours in dangerous conditions to harvest the palm oil. Along with their parents, they receive very little pay for their backbreaking work. Heat exhaustion and physical wounds are common.

Check the labels before you purchase your next palm oil product. Use lotions and moisturizers that are certified by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) and/or contain certified sustainable palm oil (CSPO).

NEW JERSEY BOTANICAL GARDEN The New Jersey Botanical Garden, part of Ringwood State Park, is the perfect place to appreciate nature and beauty amid elegant formal gardens and along paths winding through the woods. It’s the perfect place for taking pictures of the Skylands fall foliage. The Japanese maple and globose sourwood in the Azalea Garden are particularly striking this time of year. Procedure:

• Sauté the onion in the grapeseed oil until translucent.

Add 1/2 the ginger, the curry leaves, the squash, the Aleppo pepper, salt and the red curry and sauté for another two minutes over medium heat.

• Add the chicken stock and the saffron and simmer for 30 minutes until tender. Add the coconut milk and the Thai fish sauce and cook another five minutes.

• Peel and core the apple and add half of it and the remaining ginger to a vitamin mixer. Process with the soup until smooth and the consistency of a velouté.

• Serve in bowls with finely diced apple and toasted pumpkin seeds on top. * Serves 8-10.

Butternut Squash Risotto With Scallops and Crispy Prosciutto 4 Tablespoons Olive Oil ½ Teaspoon Ground Star Anise ½ Teaspoon Ground Cloves ¾ Teaspoon Ground Nutmeg 1 Teaspoon Ground Cinnamon 1 Half of One Small Butternut Squash Seeded 1 Small Spanish Onion Diced 1 Cup Risotto ½ Cup White Wine 1 Quart Chicken Stock, Vegetable Stock or Water 1 Cup Milk ¼ Cup Parmesan Cheese Grated 3 Tablespoons Butter 1 Tablespoon Sage Chopped 12 Seas Scallops Cleaned 4 Pieces Prosciutto Thinly Sliced, Then Baked Until Crispy Like Bacon

Procedure:

• Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

• Mix spices with 1 tablespoon of the olive oil to make a paste.

Spread on meat side of squash and place on cookie sheet skin side down. Cook until tender, then scoop the meat along with the browned spices and puree into food processor. Blend until very smooth.

• Season with salt and pepper. Reserve for risotto.

• Preheat sauté pan over medium heat. Add 2 tablespoons of olive oil as well as onion and sauté until translucent. Add risotto and cook until slightly nutty in color. Add white wine and cook until absorbed by the rice, stirring continuously.

Add just enough stock/water to cover rice while again stirring continuously. When the rice is becoming tender, add the butternut squash puree as well as milk, cheese, butter and sage. Season with salt and pepper. Reserve some of the milk for finishing.

• Lower temperature until ready to serve. Heat a sauté pan until hot and add 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Season the scallops with salt and pepper, then place in hot pan and cook on both sides until scallops are slightly springy to the touch.

• Raise the temperature on the risotto and adjust the consistency so it is creamy and rice is slightly nutty in the center. Add the scallops, crumble the crispy prosciutto on top and serve at once. *Serves 4.
