ĦUDHA is a collective pop-up exhibition which will be hosted at Hotel Splendid on Friday the 13th of September, at 7.00PM. The exhibition brings together thirteen visual artists; Matthew Attard Aaron Bezzina Alessio Cuschieri Etienne Farrell Charlene Galea Hannah Galea Julia Galea Matyou Galea Emma Grima Yan Pirotta Pierre Portelli Thomas Scerri Isaac Warrington Each of which bring forward their own statement based current environmental situation in Malta. Ħudha is a representation of the collective sentiment of the ‘take what you want’ attitude in relation to the local environmental consciousness.

Aaron Bezzina Untitled (Opuntia ficus-indica) II Bronze, brass and hemp string The Opuntia ficus-indica is a type of cactus found in the Maltese islands but it is not an endemic species, yet the ‘prickly pear’ is considered as an important crop plant and is a characteristic of the Maltese landscape.

However, this invasive plant takes over natural habitats and is detrimental to indigenous Maltese flora.

The work was sand cast in bronze using a newly developing cladode as the master mould, it was later disposed of. The final object is installed hanging on a rod by a string, upside down to how the plant would normally grow.

Charlene Galea Bodysuits Digital print ‘Bodysuits’ is a social project that took d female body in construction sites which are male dominated workspaces and allowed the body to intervene throygh dance in these upcoming privatised spaces. The project has been part of extended research where it looked zt how the state of the island under construction sites is affecting well being such as mental health and lack of spaces for human interaction.. Do we become who we are by what we eat as the old saying says or we are becoming who we are by what we see?

Isaac Warrington Agħti Kbir Alla Mixed Media Culture and identity are two notions that are very much intertwined with one another. Together they shape and form peoples way of being within a specified area or location.

The environment is a defining pillar on which culture and identity are built upon, everything from the food, language, behaviour and traditions are affected by the environment surrounding a population. The world is moving and it is moving fast, it is no longer the duty of the artist to raise environmental awareness because everyone knows there is a problem. Now the artist is concerned with portraying parallels and scenarios of warning.

This work aims to promote a concern with the unbalanced state of Malta and Gozo.

To illustrate the impact being created on an existential level, by one great factor out of several, our environment.

How does one revive a dying set of morals, principals and attitudes that once existed prominently within people of Malta and Gozo?

Perhaps a sense of balance is required, perhaps this loss of balance stems from a lack of cultivation of a healthy living space, a lack of respect, both towards our fellow man and towards the land that makes us.
