population area affected by some form of blindness and visual impairment. That is twice the Mexico’s popualation.*

loss. That representation is the

same as all of the inhabitants of the European Union.*

When you think of disabilities, do you imagine a person w One issue of not being inclusive as a society might be in the accessibility of the society that segregates the abled from the disabled, but you might be encountering them more than you think you are.

STANDING INVISIBLE DISABILITIES Disability is considered when one has difficulty performing certain functions (seeing, hearing, talking, walking..etc), has difficulty performing activities of daily living, or has difficulty having a certain social role. Among those with a disability, 80% are invisible. ”They can be physical, mental or neurological and include, but are not limited to, autism and Asperger syndrome, cognitive impairments such as learning difficulties and dementia, as well as mental health conditions and speech, visual impairments, or hearing loss. They also include respiratory and chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes, chronic pain, and sleep disorders when these significantly impact day-to-day life.”

Let’s talk about NEURODIVERSITY “Neurodiversity” is a term coined in 1998 by an autistic Australian sociologist, Judy Singer.

When we talk about “diversity” and “inclusion”, the current mainstream of the topic seems to be the “race” and the “gender” diversity. But society should start considering the issue of neurodiversity.

Neurodiversity is a biological fact of the diversity of human brains and minds.

Have you ever encountered a situation where your friend did not smell, did not hear, or did not taste what you are experiencing?

Neurodiversity is a term to explain these neurocognitive functioning variations within our species.

It could also be the state of being left-handed, color-blind, dyslexia, autism, ADHD, depression… after all, we all sense our world differently.

Hyperacusis is a name of a disorder for hypersensitivity to sound. Although the condition are considered rare, affecting children and adult in an estimated on 1 in 50,000 people, but it can be caused from HSP, depression, dementia, damage to your brain. Meaning it could happen to anybody.

People with hyperacusis use construction earmuffs to block and reduce the pain caused by the noise surrounding them. The current situation of lack of fashion products for them narrows their choices to wear bulky, unfashionable construction earmuffs.

Glasses were MEDICAL APPLIANCES

I n the 1930s in Britain, National Health Service classified spectacles as medical appliances, and wearers were the patients. It was only in the 1970s, that the British Government acknowledged the importance of styling.

Although the glasses became very fashionable, popular depictions of glasses in the media are still “nerdy” “geeky” “slow” “intelligent”.

If glasses still represent the above characteristics in the media, what do you think “wheelchair” or “prosthesis” represent?

Can’t they just appear in the scenes of movies and dramas not because the scene requires “disability pity” or “disability heroism” in the scenario but just as extras depicting everyday society?
