今晚我們用充滿喜悅與感恩的心情，用這場「新聲亞韻」音樂會來慶祝松 年學院十五週年的里程碑，在此特別感謝許多義工幫助籌劃、安排，以及 新亞室內樂音樂協會、合唱指導詹硯文老師、中提琴家簡韶芹博士、與黃 詩婷博士的規劃使這場音樂會成真，我們也感謝休士頓鈴木音樂學校的學 生獻唱，使今天節目增色不少，您們對松年學院寶貴的付出，我在此致上 真誠的謝意。

過去十五年來，許多人義務無私的幫助，才能使松年學院成功的在社區為大眾服務，我們要感謝 董事會的所有董事們、教授群、學生、以及許多身懷絕技的朋友來幫助松年學院每學期、甚至是 每天的事務。我們也要感謝社區、銀行、以及許多公司與機關在松年學院財力上的支持以及推廣 工作，也感謝北美台灣旅館公會聯合總會及休士頓美南台灣旅館公會的大力支持。松年學院有幸 得到許多肯定以及支持，鼓勵我們一路走過十五年，讓我感到十分感激又驕傲，願我們能繼續走 向下一個十五年，用同樣的熱情繼續服務休士頓的朋友及社區，謝謝。

It is with great joy that we celebrate the 15h year of the Houston Taiwan Institute for Senior Citizens (HTISC) with this concert today. We are so blessed to share this milestone with the numerous artists that are performing at this year’s “Encounter with New Asia” Concert. Special thanks to the New Asia Chamber Music Society, Ms. Yen-Wen Chan, Dr. Shao-Chin Chien and Dr. Shih-Ting Huang for making this benefit concert a reality.

So many people have worked hard over these last fifteen years to make this school such a continued success for our community. We would like to acknowledge our appreciations to our board members, teachers, students, and many talented people for their endless dedication daily and perseverance each semester. We are also indebted to the numerous volunteers that help to plan, organize and make this concert happen. Your service to HTISC is invaluable and there are no words to express how truly thankful we are to each and every one of you.

We are thankful to the community, banks and organizations that provide HTISC with financial and social support in the past 15 years. We could not have been as successful without your generous gifts. We are also so thankful for the support provided by the Taiwan Hotel Motel Association of North America and Greater Houston.

“The sunset is abundantly beautiful, just like the gray hair of an elderly man. You will move slower and more elegant just as your mind becomes carefree.” As beautiful as the saying seems, many senior citizens still spend their life in uncertainty and feel helpless when they age. To provide a place for many senior citizens to discover their potential and fulfill emotional needs, the HTISC has thrived to create better quality of life through educational service. We were blessed to be supported by many entrepreneurs during the last 15 years.

To celebrate our 15th anniversary, we invite New Asia Chamber Music Society from New York, students from Houston Suzuki Music, the HTISC chorus, and our faculty to share the stage of this benefit concert. Thanks to every individual who contributed and volunteered to this concert, every sponsor, and everyone in the audience. We would like to invite you to join the life-long learning family of the HTISC and thank you for your financial contribution to improve senior education.

The HTISC was founded in 2003 as a non-profit organization for serving senior citizens in the local community. Its missions are seeking prosperous and well-rounded life, life-long education, and to love and to serve. The HTISC provides a platform for our senior citizens to experience how to live passionately through our courses and field trips. We welcome to join HTISC anyone who is over 55 years old and recognizes our missions.

The HTISC is a semester system school, and students can earn an associate’s degree when the credits are earned. The courses include Morning Exercise; Flute Practice; the HTISC Chorus; Beginner Japanese; Advanced Japanese; Beginner Spanish; Intermediate Spanish; Advanced Spanish; Modern English; Culture and Heritage; Medical Knowledge; Movie and Life; Music Appreciation; Chinese Calligraphy; Original Point; Flower Arrangements in Ikenobo, Sogetsu, Ichiyo, and Manny schools; Bridge; Mah-Jong; Horticulture; Oil Painting; Chinese Painting; Computer; Dance; Tai Chi; and Yoga. Every month there is a field trip, and every semester there is a travel planned domestically or overseas.

To encourage many senior citizens to go out and learn, our curriculum is created to inspire students to follow the trend of knowledge, technology, and most importantly to be relevant to their daily life. Our faculty include professionals from the local community, Taiwan, Japan, Vietnam, Hong-Kong, and China. Students can discover their potential and make life more meaningful through learning from these professionals. The registration fee is $20 (once for the lifetime) and tuition is $120 per semester (for all classes). Student Fraternity is $15, and lunch fee is $150/semester. Scholarships are available when applicants are 1) low-income, 2) taking more than 2/3 of classes, 3) inviting new students to join HTISC. Carpool arrangement is available. New Asia Chamber Music Society (NACMS) is committed to bringing audiences exceptional performances of the chamber music repertoire, drawn from the canon of western music as well as contemporary Asian culture. We seek to create innovative new works in partnership with arts organizations around the world. Biography Hailed by New York Concert Reviews as “an impressively organized and professional group… comprised of many young and gifted players”, New Asia Chamber Music Society is propelled by a passion and profound respect for both western classical music works and new music written by composers of our time.

The 2016-2017 season held many highlights. This includes a Lincoln Center debut concert, “Seasons of Legacy”, at Merkin Hall, featuring special guests Cho Liang Lin and Orion Weiss, violin virtuosi Kevin Lin, Richard Lin, William Wei and Cindy Wu, and NACMS artistic director Andy Lin on erhu. The Salon Concert Series, a newly curated series of house concerts, was launched this year to create a more intimate chamber music experience. Special collaborations include a premiere of Dia-Mono-Logues, a new ballet by Peridance Contemporary Dance Company’s founder Igal Perry, and a performance of Huang Ro’s Calligraffiti for String Quartet and Crosscurrent with the Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company. Other projects include collaborations with JP Jofre, tango bandoneonist/composer and performances at Flushing Town Hall’s Chinese New Year Temple Bazaar and annual fundraiser.

New Asia Chamber Music Society was founded in 2010 by an idealistic group of young Asian-American virtuosi, graduated from the prestigious Juilliard School and Curtis Institute of Music. Since their sold-out debut performance at Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall, NACMS musicians have performed in major concert venues across New York City, including Carnegie’s Zankel Hall, Lincoln Center’s David Geffen Hall, National Sawdust and Kaufman Center’s Merkin Hall and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Innovative programming has brought music to audiences in Ellis Island, Queens Museum, Flushing Town Hall, Joe’s Pub, Chelsea Museum, and Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) of New York. Recently, NACMS musicians toured with the National Concert Hall of Taiwan and gave performances and masterclasses at the National Taiwan Normal University and Taiwan National University of Arts.

Taiwanese born violist and erhuist (Chinese violin), Wei-Yang Andy Lin, is recognized as one of the most promising and the onlyactive performers who specialized in both western and eastern instruments. Praised byThe Strad “The great Molto adagio… elicited some of the night’s most sensitive work, especially from Andy Lin on viola.” and New York Times “Taiwanese-born violist Andy Lin… is also a virtuoso on the erhu, and he gave a brilliant performance.” He is the artistic director and co-founder of the New Asia Chamber Music Society. Andy holds his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from The Juilliard School and received his doctorate degree in Musical Arts from SUNY Stony Brook. He has won numerous competitions including Taiwan National Viola Competition, the Idyllwild Concerto Competition, First Prize in the 2008 Juilliard Viola Concerto Competition and subsequently made his Lincoln Center solo debut at the David Geffen Hall with the Juilliard Orchestra. He was also the winner of the 2009 SUNY Stony Brook Concerto Competition. He has also appeared as soloist with orchestras such as Yonkers Philharmonic Orchestra, Orford Academy Orchestra, Incheon Philharmonic and New York Classical Players.

Andy is also an avid chamber musician and is a founding member of the award-winning string quartet, the Amphion String Quartet. The quartet was a winner of the 2011 Concert Artists Guild Victor Elmaleh Competition and was on the roster of the Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society CMS2 Program from 2013~2016. The quartet’s debut album with Nimbus Records in England was selected by the New York Times as “The Best 25 Classical Music Recordings of 2015.” Mr. Lin

is also a member of the Musicians of Lenox Hill and serves as principal violist of the New York Classical Players and the Solisti Ensemble. He has been invited to perform chamber music with Itzhak Perlman where The New York Times described “Mr. Perlman, playing first violin… answered in kind by the violist Wei-Yang Andy Lin.”

As a world recognized professional erhu player, he has recently performed an erhu concerto with the Juilliard Orchestra at its Focus! Festival final concert at Alice Tully Hall at the Lincoln Center in which it was featured in the New York Times. He has also performed the erhu solo part at the U.S. Premiere of Sir Peter Maxwell Davies’ “Kommilitonen!” with the Juilliard Opera Production, as well as the world premiere of Jeeyoung Kim’s “Engraft” for solo erhu and string orchestra with Solisti Ensemble at Carnegie Hall. He also premiered Winnie Lan-In Yang’s “Fantasy for Erhu and Strings” with the New York Classical Players. He has been invited by the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and the Grant Park Symphony Orchestra of the Grant Park Music Festival in Chicago to play the solo erhu part in “Iris dévoilée” by Chen Qi-Gang. He has also appeared as an erhu solo in the U.S. Premiere of Yeow-Kwon Chung’s “Red Cliff” Piano Concerto with the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia. In fall 2017, he performed a haegeum concerto on the erhu with Busan Metropolitan Traditional Music Orchestra. He has also been invited by the Metropolitan Museumto give recitals at their Gallery Concert Series and Patrons Lounge Concert, as wellas a recitalatthe Caramoor Center for the Music and the Arts. Cellist Nan-Cheng Chen’s performance was recently described as “personable and smile-inducing” and “fine playing” by the Washington Post in 2014 and “Beautiful Tone” by New York Concert Reviews in 2011, Nan-Cheng is passionate about sharing music with music lovers. At only age 29, Nan-Cheng is the executive director and founder of the New Asia Chamber Music Society (NACMS), a member of Sonic Escape, Chen Trio, Ensemble 101, and many other active music ensembles in New York City. An active soloist, Nan-Cheng has collaborated with Simon Bolivar Orchestra, National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra, Queens Symphony Orchestra, Metro-West Symphony, Classic Orchestra of Taichung, Quincy Symphony and Symphony Pro Musica, which received a review that states: “It was the kind of performance one might hear live only once a decade”, from Worcester Telegram and Gazette.

Among Nan-Cheng’s many honors and awards are first prize in the 2010 Queens Symphony Concerto Competition, 2009 Lillian Fuchs Chamber Music Competition, 2006 International Chamber Music Ensemble Competition, 2005 Quincy Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition, 2004 Hsin-Tian Temple National Cello Competition in Taiwan, and 2003 Metro-West Concerto Competitions. He also won prizes in 2010 Long Island Conservatory Young Artist Competition, 2006 Fischoff National Chamber Competition and 1999 Taiwan National Cello and Piano Competition. Nan-Cheng has also been featured on NPR’s From the Top national radio broadcast in 2006, performing with its host, pianist Christopher O’Riley. During the summer, Nan-Cheng has been invited to music festivals such as Canada’s Banff Centre, Sarasota Music Festival, Heifetz Institute, Encore School for Strings, and Kneisel Hall. He was a guest-performing artist at Chautauqua Summer Music Festival, a Kaplan Fellow at the Bowdoin International Music Festival and served as a teaching artist at the Annual Music Festival of Walnut Hill. As an educator, NanCheng has given masterclasses at Penn State University, University of Wisconsin, University of Calgary as well as prominent universities in Panama, Colombia and Taiwan.

A Native of Taiwan, Nan-Cheng has earned Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees from The Juilliard School, studying with Joel Krosnick, renowned cellist of The Juilliard String Quartet. Nan-Cheng Chen came to United States at the age of twelve and attended Idyllwild Arts Academy in California, studying under Eleonore Schoenfeld. He then entered the New England Conservatory Preparatory Program to study with Mark Churchill before attending the Juilliard School. Nan-Cheng is currently a doctoral candidate at CUNY Graduate Center under the guidance of cellist Marcy Rosen. He was an adjunct faculty at CUNY Queens College.

Nan-Cheng Chen’s recent musical journeys features over a hundred performances including several solo and chamber concert tours throughout North American, South America, Europe and Asia. Recent highlights including a sold-out concert with National SymphonyOrchestra of Taiwan and Taipei Symphony Orchestra’s Chamber Orchestra playing the Schumann Cello Concerto and Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations.

As recitalist and chamber musician, Wu performs regularly in Asia, Europe and North America, at prominent venues such as Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Washington, D.C.’s Kennedy Center, Library of Congress, DeutschesTheaterMünchen,amongmanyothers. Artists withwhomshehascollaborated includeTeddyAbrams, GaryGraffman, Kim Kashkashian, Ani Kavafian, Ida Kavafian, Cho-Liang Lin, Anthony Marwood, Midori, Thomas Quasthoff, and members of the Alban Berg, Brentano, Cleveland, Emerson, Guarneri, Miró, Tokyo and Ying quartets. Wu has appeared as guest violist her second instrument with the Dover Quartet, Formosa Quartet, Orion String Quartet and the Shanghai Quartet. She is currently the Artist in Residence and Artistic Partner of the Da Camera Society of Los Angeles since 2013.

Wu’s festival collaborations include the Marlboro Music Festival, Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival, Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival, Mainly Mozart, La Jolla Music Society SummerFest, Music@Menlo, Verbier Festival and Academy, Olympic Music Festival, and she has served as a chamber music coach at the ENCORE School for Strings, the Hotchkiss Summer Portals, and Wildwood Academy of Music and the Arts.

Wu’s media appearances feature performances on NPR’s “From the Top,” on WHYY TV and Radio in Philadelphia, as well as numerous on-air interviews with Philharmonic Radio Taipei and IC Broadcasting of Taiwan. She has been spotlighted on Taiwan’s TVBS Television and in the September 2004 issue of Marie Claire Taiwan.

Tien-Hsin Cindy Wu received her bachelor’s degree from the Curtis Institute of Music in 2008. In 2010 she graduated from the Thornton School of Music of the University of Southern California, with awards for excellence in both solo string instrument performance and chamber music. Wu’s teachers include Dorothy DeLay, Hyo Kang, Ida Kavafian, Victor Danchenko, Steven Tenenbom, and Midori Goto. She taught violin, chamber music, and string pedagogy at Thornton School of Music of the University of Southern California from 2010 to 2015.

Among Wu’s many honors and awards are the Gold Medal in the 2003 Stulberg International String Competition and third prize in the Odessa International David Oistrakh Violin Competition and Milka Violin Artist Fellowship

Born in Taipei, Taiwan, pianist Tzu-yi Chen has been studying music passionately since the age at three. She studied at the Paris Conservatory and at the National Karlsruhe Music University in Germany, following in the footsteps of history’s greatest musicians. Based in the Washington, D.C. area since 2014, Tzu-yi teaches at the Levine School of Music and serves on the music staff at Taiwanese Presbyterian Church. Previously, she studied at Columbus State University’s Schwob School of Music in Columbus, Georgia. While in Columbus, she co-founded the International Friendship Ministries’ Arts Academy. She holds first prizes and other awards from competitions around the world including the Liszt-Garrison Festival and International Piano Competition in Baltimore, the International Piano Competition of Mauro Paolo Monopoli and Cantu in Italy, and the International Chopin Piano Competition in Darmstadt, Germany. Recent concerts have taken her to venues and festivals in Alabama, Georgia, New York, D.C., Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Florida. Upcoming performances in 2018 including the NACMS Gala concert in Merkin Hall, NY and the MuseConnect Gala concert in Dimenna Center, NY.

In 2017, she performed for the 60th anniversary celebration concert of the Taiwan-Paraguay diplomatic relations in Asunción, Paraguay. In 2016, she was presented in Ponce, Puerto Rico; at The Church of the Epiphany in D.C.; and in Taiwan's National Concert Hall. Her 2014 debut in Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall received a rave review of “Magnificent” from Frank Daykin of New York Concert Review.

The HTISC choir was formed during the karaoke classes in 2006, starting with simple folk song repertoires and popular music practice. Since many students benefited from the class, it became a formal choir led by Ms. Yen-Wen Chan and many other music faculty. The HTISC choir has been performing in numerous community events including “The Voice of Harmony Choir Concert” in March 2015.

Ms. Yen-Wen Chan graduated from the Music Department from Chinese Cultural University in Taiwan, majoring in vocal and piano. While in Taiwan she worked as a music teacher in numerous high schools and taught the early childhood music program at Kawaii music school. At the same time, she also sang in the Broadcasting Corporation of China's chorus.

Ms. Chan moved to Houston in 1987 and continued to teach early childhood music, adult keyboard program, vocal and piano lessons in numerous schools including Sherman Clay (Yamaha Music School) In 1990, she was the solo soprano in the Yellow River Chorus as the piece was premiered in Houston; in 2004 she performed over 15 songs in the fundraising concert by American Bohdi Center; she was invited by Taipei Economic and Culture Office to sing Taiwanese folk songs and art songs at the One Allen Center in 2009. Other than performing, she also coordinates various concerts including Overseas Chinese Culture and Art Festival (1989-1995), Houston Voice of Harmony Concert (2007-2010) and many others. She was a member of Houston Music Teacher Association, American Music Teacher Association, and was also one of the chairpersons of the Houston audition centers of the National Guild of Piano Teacher. She has conducted several community choruses over the years including the Chinese American Musician’s Association of Houston, Houston Bodhi Choir, and the HTISC Chorus. She is currently a member of the Houston masterworks chorus

Dr. Shaochin Chien, originally from Taiwan, attained her Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music in viola performance fromthe UniversityofMiami, Florida, withfull scholarshipandteachingassistantship underthe mentorshipofPamela McConnell. She was the second place winner in the American String Teachers Association in the solo competition in the Florida chapter soon after she started her graduate study in 2001, and has been invited to judge many solo and concerto competitions. Before relocating to Houston, she was the co-founder and assistant director of the University of Miami String Academy and performed in many orchestras including the Miami Symphony Orchestra, the Miami City Ballet Orchestra, the Palm Beach Symphony Orchestra, the Miami Grand Opera, the Miami Bach Society, and the Naples Symphony Orchestra, as viola principal and assistant principal.

After relocating to Houston in 2009, she devoted herself fully into internationally well-known Suzuki Talent Education and has been invited to teach at the University of Southern Mississippi and many Houston Suzuki organizations to perform, teach in the master classes and give lectures. Dr. Chien is currently the director of Houston Suzuki Music school as well as in the Spring

Branch ISD Suzuki violin program. Her students are constant winners of the all-state/all-county/all-city/regional auditions and many of them are the concert masters/mistresses and principals in Houston Youth Symphony and all-state orchestras. Aside from fulltimeteachingpositions,Dr.Chienisalsoanactive soloist andchamberplayerandconstantlyleads students topresentconcerts in the greater Houston area. She has also been invited as the music appreciation instructor and guest soloist at HTISC.

GoodShepherdUnitedMethodistChurch 與 St. Johns Presbyterian Church 任司琴工作，曾任教於 Lone Star Cy-Fair 大學，休士頓松年學院教授音樂欣賞課，新心 基督教音樂學院校長等。目前她是德州中文台「音樂的殿堂」節目主持人。

PianoaccompanistShih-TingHuang holds herDoctorofMusical Arts inViolinPerformance andPedagogyfromthe University ofHouston, witha cognate incollaborative keyboard. After finishing her master’s degree fromthe College-Conservatoryof Music (CCM) at the University of Cincinnati as a pupil of Kurt Sassmannshaus, she has performed with numerous orchestras including the Houston Grand Opera and the Houston Ballet Orchestra. Led by Andrzej Grabiec, she won the concerto competition of the University of Houston, Moores School of Music in 2001, and was one of the finalists of the concerto competition of the Texas Music Festival in 2002. She was also the concertmistress of the DVD – P.D.Q. Bach in Houston in 2006.

Since age fifteen, she has participated in numerous music festivals including the Youth Orchestra of National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra, the Aspen Music Festival, and the Texas Music Festival. During the Walnut Hill Festival in 1997, she studied piano under the direction of pianists Hong-Kuan Chen and Pi-Hsien Chen. Her piano teachers include Timothy Hester and Zhen-Ling Shen.

Piano was her first instrument age since five and she has continued playing it every chance she could. She has accompanied for contestants, in the Aspen Music Festival, CCM, and worked as a church pianist at St. Johns Presbyterian Church and Good Shepherd United Methodist Church. She has accompanied for all of her student recitals since 2004. Dr. Huang was a faculty of the New Heart Christian School of Music, New Heart String Camp, Houston Taiwan Institute for Senior Citizen, and Lone Star Cy-Fair College. She is currently the hostess of a classical music show "Sky Theater" on Texas Chinese Radio AM 1320.
