Aloha and Welcome, All of us at Hawaii Tokai International College (HTIC) share pride in our beautiful campus and modern facilities located in the ever-expanding Kapolei Community of West Oahu.

Our caring staff and dedicated faculty closely support a diverse learning community and promote active learning both in and out of the classroom.

HTIC’s location adjacent to the University of Hawaii- West Oahu (UHWO) offers a multitude of opportunities for interaction and collaboration. Our unique partnership allows students to combine weekly events to exchange cultures and share world views. These intercultural experiences often give students inspiration and confidence to explore our study abroad programs in Japan, Korea, and China.

Our diverse population of both U.S. and international students live and learn together in our comfortable on-campus residence. With 24-hour security, a live-in resident coordinator, and student advisors, it is a safe and supportive learning environment. Students can readily access classrooms, student services, and our Learning Center with ample space and resources for independent study, academic coaching and collaborative learning. Small class sizes, and a close-knit faculty/staff providing individual guidance,further create a family-like atmosphere.

Hawaii Tokai International College - HTIC

Overview

HTIC は東海大学の海外教育機関として1992年に設立された短期大学で、米国の基準認定（アクレディテーション） を受けています。2015年４月に、ホノルルの街中からオアフ島西部のカポレイ地区（ハワイ大学ウェストオアフ校 キャンパスビレッジ内）に移転しました。本学を修了すると米国短期大学士（教養） （Associate in Arts Degree） が授与され、日米の4年制大学に編入することができます。さまざまな国の学生が在籍し、隣のハワイ大学との交流 も含め、国際色豊かな環境の中で授業が行われています。 Established in 1992, HTIC is a liberal arts junior college, accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges component of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. The new HTIC campus opened in Spring of 2015 at the University of Hawaii - West Oahu Campus Village, located in the west side of Oahu. HTIC strives to be an international campus where students from the U.S., Asia and the Pacific study and learn together in small, interactive classrooms taught by highly qualified faculty.

本学には、本科（Liberal Arts〈LA〉Program）と 予科（College Preparatory〈CP〉Program）の 2つの教育プログラムがあります。本科は教養学科単科の短期大学。予科は今後アメリカの大学で勉 強したい学生のために、必要な英語力とスタディスキルを養成するプログラムです。どちらも少人数 のクラスで十分な個人指導を受けることができます。

There are two programs of study offered at HTIC: the Liberal Arts (LA) Program and the College Preparatory (CP) Program. A variety of courses are offered in each program and classes are kept small, making it possible to give individualized attention to all students.

The CP Program provides students with the opportunity to develop their English language abilities and the study skills necessary to successfully enter and complete the LA program. The CP Program consists of five English competency levels and students are placed in the appropriate level based on the results of a placement test. As students complete each level of study, they gain the skills necessary to succeed in the LA Program. A TOEFL® score of over 450 points (PBT) or over 45 points (iBT) is required to advance to the LA Program.

本科の夏学期は５週間ずつの Session1と Session2に分かれ、本科生は両方、またはどちらかを履修できま す。空いた時間を利用して、他の大学に行って単位を修得することも可能です。予科クラスは他の学期と同 様、約10週間のスケジュールです。 Summer term in the LA Program is divided into two 5-week sessions. Students can choose to take courses during either or both sessions. Taking advantage of an empty term, it is also possible to take classes from other schools. For the CP Program, the summer term is the same length as other terms (approximately 10 weeks).

Transfer Information HTIC と編入協定を締結している下記の大学間では、各大学の応募条件を満たしている と編入学が認められます。また、この協定により HTIC で取得した単位の移行がスムー ズに行われ、一部の大学では奨学金も支給されます。また編入協定がなくても編入を受 け入れている大学であれば、どの大学にも志願することができます。

HTICでは多彩な短期英語研修を実施しています。英語をはじめ、アメリカやハワイ文化、マリンスポーツなどを学ぶ短 期集中の実践的プログラムです。インターナショナルプログラムに参加して、HTIC の素晴らしさを体験してください。 HTIC offers a variety of intensive short-term programs throughout the year that assist students in improving their English ability while studying American and Hawaiian culture, such as marine sports and so on. These programs allow students to experience the excitement and quality of learning at HTIC.

SHIP プログラム

Senior High School Intercultural Program （ 対 象： 全 東 海 大 学 付 属 高 校 3 年 生 ／ Open to: Seniors at Tokai University high schools）

進路の確定した付属高校3年生が1月から2月までの2カ月間、 HTIC に留学するプログラムです。英語力の向上はもちろん、大 学進学後必要となるリサーチ、プレゼンテーション、ディスカッ ションなどの方法や技術を修得します。一般の高校では決して 体験できない、東海大学の一貫教育システムを最大限に活用し たプログラムです。 SHIP is a 2 month long program for Tokai University high school seniors who are already accepted to Tokai University or HTIC. From January to February, students will not only study English but also improve their skills and techniques in research, presentation and discussion, which will be the key to their success in college.

Double Degree Program

（ 対 象：東 海 大 学 2 年 次 〜 4 年 次 ／ Open to: Sophomore – Senior at Tokai University）

4年間で日本の東海大学から学士号、HTIC から短期大学士号を 両方取得できるプログラムです。このプログラムで派遣される 学生は東海大学で修得した単位の一部を HTIC の単位として読 み替えることにより、8カ月間で短期大学士号を取得できます。 In the DDP program, students will earn both an American Associate in Arts degree from HTIC and a Japanese Bachelor’s degree from Tokai University in 4 years. Students will be able graduate from HTIC in 8 months by transferring part of their credits they earned at Tokai University in Japan.

医学英語ワークショップ

Medical English Workshop

（対象：医学部5年次／ Open to: 5th year medical school students）

HOPES プログラム

Hawaii Outreach Program for English Studies （対象：東海大学・短大在学生／ Open to: Students at Tokai University or Tokai University junior colleges）

英語コミュニケーション能力の向上を目指し、4技能 （聞く・話す・ 読む・書く） を集中的に高める授業に加え、アメリカ文化・ハワイ ® 文化を学ぶ約4週間のプログラムです。TOEIC テスト対策にも 授業の中で取り組みます。 HOPES is a 4 week intensive English program for college students to improve their communication skills in English while working on four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) and studying American and Hawaiian culture. Students will also study for TOEIC® test in class.

日本にある複数の大学から医学部生が参加する1週間の集中医 学英語研修です。ケースプレゼンテーションに関する医学英語 のレッスンに加え、ハワイ大学医学部生を患者役にした問診練 習で英語力に磨きをかけます。ハワイの現役医師による講義や ハワイで臨床実習をしている日本人実習生（resident）の体験談 を聞くことにより、将来アメリカで臨床実習を行うための情報 収集ができます。 さらに、現地での 医学部、病院訪問 を通して日本とア メリカの医学や医 学教育の違いも学 びます。医学教育 の一端を担うユニ ークなプログラム です。 Medical English Workshop is a 1 week program for 5th year students from medical schools in Japan. In addition to improving their case presentation skills in Medical English classes, students have opportunity to practice the skills in Clinic Practice sessions with medical students from University of Hawaii. Through lectures by doctors and residents working in Hawaii, they are able to learn about residency programs in the U.S. Visits to medical school and hospital also enable them to compare and contrast medicine and medical education in Japan and the U.S. Medical English Workshop offers students a unique opportunity in medical education.

オアフ島西地区、カポレイキャンパスで新しい学びがスタート ハワイ大学ウェストオアフ校との数々の連携 HTIC のキャンパスは2015年4月にオアフ島の西、カポレイ市にあ るハワイ大学ウェストオアフ校（UHWO）のキャンパスビレッジ内に 移転しました。日本にルーツを持つ学校が、州立の大学とコラボレー ションするという例を見ない画期的な試みとして注目されています。

Academic collaboration between HTIC and UHWO

Number of collaboration with University of Hawaii-West Oahu In April 2015, HTIC moved its campus to West Oahu, to the campus village of University of Hawaii-West Oahu in Kapolei. We succeeded in a very rare form of collaboration with a State University and our school with its deep roots in Japan.

In order to maximize the student interactions, it was decided to build HTIC campus adjacent to the UHWO campus. HTIC students may use the cafeteria, library, and other facilities at UHWO. Once a week, the international groups on both campuses host International Coffee Hour and the students teach each other, play games, and create friendship bonds.

The partnership between HTIC and UHWO contributes to the internationalization of both campuses. UHWO students take Japanese classes on the HTIC campus and HTIC students are their tutors and conversation partners. HTIC students participate in intramural sports activities on the UHWO campus. Some UHWO students live in the HTIC residence hall. HTIC students are also able to interact with exchange students from UHWO. As our partnership continues to grow, we plan to develop a cross registration system that will allow HTIC students to take classes at UHWO and UHWO students to take classes at HTIC. As we value and cherish the collaboration with the UHWO, we hope to offer as much as we can by making the West Oahu region as the main base for international education.

HTIC is a two-year liberal arts junior college accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC-ACCJC). There are two programs of study at HTIC – the Liberal Arts (LA) Program, in which students can earn an Associate in Arts (A.A.) degree, and the College Preparatory (CP) Program, which prepares students with the English language and academic skills necessary to succeed in the LA program and beyond.

Over 80 percent of our graduates transfer to four-year institutions in the U.S., Japan, and other countries. All classes are conducted in English, and classes are limited to 18 students in order to foster comfortable communication between students and teachers. By studying together in Hawaii, a place where East meets West, students from the U.S. and other countries can broaden their worldview while developing their academic skills. For students who wish to become global citizens and promote intercultural understanding, HTIC is an ideal learning environment.

While the Ministry of Education serves as the accrediting agency regulating junior colleges and universities in Japan, private and public universities in the U.S. are monitored by the accrediting commission responsible for their geographic region. These regional accrediting commissions are in turn recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Accreditation is important because it not only ensures the academic quality and the administrative and fiscal stability of an institution, it also assists in the ease with which credits earned at one institution are successfully transferred to another. HTIC is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges/Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (WASC/ACCJC). Although there are around 160 “colleges and universities” in Hawaii, only 15, including HTIC, are accredited. Non-accredited institutions called “diploma mills,” which issue degrees after a substandard or no education in exchange for a fee, are a continuing social problem.

Yes, HTIC offers a limited number of “Gateway Scholarships” for students in the LA program. Students who have a good academic record and demonstrate a commitment to community service both inside and outside of HTIC are qualified to apply. HTIC has an off-campus school doctor who can provide medical treatment in both Japanese and English. Students who have medical conditions or health concerns should ask their primary doctor for a copy of their medical records and bring them to Hawaii in order to receive necessary treatment from the school doctor while studying at HTIC. Please remember that health insurance is mandatory for all international students. Although it is possible to obtain insurance once you arrive in the U.S., we recommend that you sign up with a carrier before your departure as the insurance coverage may be more comprehensive (medical, accident, liability, etc.) in your home country.

HTIC is accredited by WASC/ACCJC (see Q2) and therefore, you may transfer to a U.S. four-year institution after receiving your A.A. degree from HTIC. HTIC has articulation agreements with many schools in the U.S., Japan, and elsewhere in order to ease the transfer process (see Transfer page for the complete list of schools).

In principle, you will be able to transfer to any college in Japan; however you must clear the college's transfer requirements. The number of HTIC credits that you will be able to transfer depends on each college and each department/school's standards. In general, the transfer of credits to an institution with which HTIC has an academic agreement will be smoother, but the amount of transferable credits may differ depending on your choice of department/school. Because HTIC is part of the Tokai University Educational System, students may transfer to most Tokai University departments/schools, with the exception of the School of Medicine, School of Nursing, certain departments in the School of Physical Education, and the Department of Aviation. The courage to follow my heart ignited my soul and with a lot of support from many kindhearted faculty and staff, I could find my path in life. More than 10 years later, all of my experiences connected to my current occupation as an Assistant Professor at Tokai University’s International Education Center.

Although it may be hard to imagine your future now, I hope you also believe in yourself and achieve your goals.

2003年、私は東海大学付属の浦安高校に通っていました。自分 は将来何がしたいのかわかりませんでしたが、一つだけ明確にわ かっていたことがありました。それは、英語を使った仕事がした いということでした。そこで私は HTIC への進学を決めました。 在学中は何度も辞めたいと思いましたが、次第に学ぶことが楽 しくなり、熱心に勉強をするようになりました。また、このまま この大学で勉強を続ければ、いつかなりたい自分になれると思う ようになりました。自分を信じて前に進む勇気と、温かい教職員 のサポートのおかげで、自分の進む方向を見つけることができま した。約10年が経った今、自分が経験したこと全てが結びつき、 現在は東海大学国際教育センターの助教として働いています。 皆さんが将来について考えることは大変なことだと思います が、ぜひ自分の心を信じて夢を実現してほしいと思います。

When I was in high school, I was determined to study at a fouryear university in the U.S. However, I needed to acquire the necessary English skills and experiences to realize this plan. HTIC’s programs made me confident that I could achieve my future goals.

Thankfully, faculties provided me with a high quality English language education. They are incredibly supportive and allowed me to engage in a variety of opportunities that aligned with my own interests and goals. I graduated with a degree in Psychology from the University of Hawaii in 2012. I am currently interning as a mental health counselor and studying psychology at graduate school.

Studying abroad is an amazing experience, but it can be challenging. Take care of yourself, find good friends and have fun within and outside of campus. For me, surfing not only helps my mental and physical wellbeing, but also provides me a diverse community of people with which to interact. 東海大学付属浦安高校に通っていたころ、米国の大学で勉強するこ とを決めました。しかし最初に必要な英語力 を身に付ける必要があ りました。HTIC のプログラムは学生が卒業後に自信を持って進学す る準備ができるシステムなので HTIC に決めました。先生方の質の 高い英語教育とサポートのおかげで、さまざまな機会を通して英語で 学ぶことができました。 HTIC を卒業後、ハワイ大学の心理学部で勉強し2012年に卒業しま した。 現在はハワイで心理カウンセラーとして勤務しつつ、臨床心理 学者になることを目標に大学院で心理学の勉強を続けています。 海外留学は素晴らしい経験ですが、大変なこともたくさんあると思 います。私自身は サーフィンを通して多様な人々と出会うことがで きました。学問だけではなく趣味を見つけてハワイでの生活も楽しみ つつ、目標に向けて頑張ってほしいと思います。

I am currently working for an Abilities Unlimited, NPO to support the disabled citizens to live with confidence and in ease. We provide support (Japan) by raising awareness for equal opportunities in employment. My main duties are explaining about how to use public transportation, advise on Graduated: 2008 employment, and communicating with them and their families. Typically, I University of Hawaii-Manoa don’t use any Japanese at my work. My English isn’t perfect so whenever I Major: American Studies and Master need help, I seek assistance from my coworkers. Until I came to HTIC, I didn’t really know how to study well; I even repeated CP twice. I got strong support from the teachers during the difficult times. They understood the loneliness I felt as a student studying abroad and they showed great care with my studies. I believe no other schools in the U.S. will be able to show this much personal care and attention to the students.

障がいを持っている方が力強く安心して生きていける、そんなコミュニティーを作るのを目標に、Abilities Unlimited という NPO で働いてい ます。健常者に理解を深めてもらい、差別なく一緒に働けるようにすることをサポートしています。 公共交通機関の使い方、就職の相談やあっせん、会社への働きかけ等、本人や家族、企業と話をしながら進めます。仕事で日本語を使う機会 は全くといっていいほどありません。私の英語も完璧ではないので、わからないときはすぐに同僚に聞くようにしています。この姿勢は HTIC で学んだことです。自分がサポートした人たちが仕事を見つけたり、一人でできたりして感謝されると、やりがいを感じます。もう辞められな くなりますね。 HTIC に入るまではあまり勉強の方法もわからず、CP も2回リピートしました。そんなときに周りの先生たちが強力にサポートしてくれまし た。日本を離れて留学生として学ぶ孤独とつらさを理解してくれ、勉強を親身に見てくれました。普通のアメリカの学校では、できない学生に そこまでケアはしてくれないと思います。

卒業生・在学生からのメッセージ Kensei Sasaki (Japan) 予科／ CP I want to get a career in which I can use the English language. So I decided to study at HTIC to improve my English proficiency. When I first came here, I had concerns and things I didn’t understand but thanks to my professors and friends, I was able to overcome those. Through interaction with local students, I have improved my English skills, learned their culture and had valuable experiences that I wouldn’t have been able to get in Japan. I recommend HTIC to students who want to place themselves in a completely new environment and to challenge various things. 私は、将来英語を使った仕事に就きたいと思っています。そのための英語力を培うために HTIC への留学を決めまし た。HTIC に来た当初は、わからないことや不安なことなどいろいろありましたが、先生方や友達の支えでたくさんのことを乗り越えられまし た。また、現地の学生たちとの交流を通じて、英語力はもちろん、彼らの文化など日本ではなかなかできない貴重な経験をすることができて います。英語を頑張って勉強したい、全く新しい環境に自分を置いていろいろなことに挑戦してみたい、そんな人に HTIC はとてもお勧めです。

Kyoko Sekine (Japan) 予科／ CP I was interested in studying abroad when I was a high school student, but it was difficult for me to decide to go abroad because I had never lived on my own in an English-speaking environment. Therefore, joining the CP program at HTIC was very suitable for me. Instructors and staff at HTIC are used to foreign students, so they give us accurate advice when students can’t keep up with their studies or feel homesick. HTIC often hosts students from Korea and other countries, so HTIC students have the opportunity to experience cultural exchange not only with Americans but also with people from other countries. 高校生のころから留学への興味はあったのですが、家族から離れる上に、当たり前ですが英語だけの環境で生活し ていかなくてはいけないということもあり、留学しようと決意するのは簡単ではありませんでした。なので、CP プログラムはとても私に向 いていたと思います。CP プログラムの先生や学校のスタッフの方も留学生を迎えることに慣れているので、勉強についていけなくなった り、ホームシックになってしまった時に安心して頼ることができます。HTIC は日本人のほかに韓国など他の国からの学生を受け入れている ので、英語の勉強やアメリカ以外の異文化交流も体験することができます。

Rikito Watanabe (Japan) 本科／ LA I feel that HTIC is really improving my English skills. Studying English at HTIC is really challenging for me. Every day I get many assignments and I study all day. This is the most I’ve ever studied but I think the hard work is paying off. Because HTIC is a two-year college, I need to decide what I will do and to which college I will transfer after HTIC. I am always thinking about my future, but the teachers and staff at HTIC give kind advice and help students. And in Hawaii there is lot of nature, such as beaches and mountains. It is a very good environment for study. However, since Hawaii is tourist destination, there are many temptations. To be a good adult, students should learn how to deal with temptations and how to communicate with people. I think HTIC will provide you with many worthwhile experiences for your future.

HTIC は英語の力を基礎からしっかりと伸ばしてくれます。自分が今までで一番勉強しているのではないかと思うくらい大変な環境です が、しっかりとそれが結果に出ていると実感しています。HTIC は短期大学なのでその後の進路を決めないといけません。自分の将来のこと なので悩むことがたくさんありますが、教職員の方々がアドバイスをして助けてくれます。ハワイは自然が多く素晴らしい環境ですが、観光 地でもあるので誘惑がものすごくあり、勉強面以外でも大人になっていく上で誘惑や人との付き合い方などを学び、人として大きく成長でき ると思います。HTIC は自分の将来にとってとても貴重な経験を与えてくれる場所だと思います。

Jesslyn Wheeler（USA）本科／ LA Alooohaaa from all the students here in Hawaii at HTIC! As one of the local students who attend HTIC, it was a new experience for me to be in such an international school. I actually came to this school to learn Japanese, but it was a bit difficult because everyone was trying to learn English instead. It was hard to adjust at first, but the teachers, the faculty and staff, and every single one of the students here tried to make me feel welcome. I made plenty of new friends at this school and hope to be able to visit them in the future in Japan and Korea. I've grown so much during my short time at HTIC. (The time went by much too quickly!) I will be forever grateful to this school for allowing me the opportunity to learn more about myself and for teaching me to look past the walls of my own country in order to see the world.

Admissions Information 入試情報 日本の大学とは違う4学期制システムだから入学のチャンスは年4回 HTIC では、1年の教育課程を4学期（春・夏・秋・冬）で運営する4学期制を導入しています。よって、入学を希望する皆 さんの都合に合わせて、それぞれの学期が始まる際に入学できます。入学試験は年4回あり、春・夏・秋・冬学期の入学 に合わせて、年4回書類審査で合否を決めて入学できる AO 入試を採用しています。詳しい入試情報は、p. 20 でご確認 ください。
