THE KORU
There is nothing simpler than meditation. How diverse and different meditation is perceived, the common ground of all is choosing to focus on one thing simultaneously, trying to concentrate as long as one can. The meditating experience we would like to deliver as in the cabin has no limit at all. The place will be accommodated by multiple people who would enter holding their own perspectives and thoughts.
Considering the surrounding context and the site location itself, we would like to add the essence of expressing the history and cultural value of the land. We acquired that Maori (Aboriginal people of New Zealand) plays a major role spiritually and culturally. What we would like to integrate from this finding is the most basic pattern of all, known as koru which is based on the appearance of a new unfurling silver fern frond and first discovered by the Maori people, for its significant meaning symbolizing the growth and the return to the point of origin.
In order to accentuate the point of origin to have a distinct feature as in meditation where we focus on the most obvious matter happening in us or around us and to enhance the recentering, the fundamental 4 elements of life (water, fire, air, earth) will be interlaced into the design as these elements are believed to be what makes us and what are within us. Observing them can help us to originate ourselves and re discover our roots from a sentient and symbolic look into the relationship between people and nature through multisensory experiences in the built environment.

The form is inspired by beehive hexagon shape. The side wall cover (Louvers) is the one unique characteristic of the house. They can be folded or set to desirable angle to achieve or block out lighting and ventilation. In addition they act as steps to get to the roof. The ceiling space contains water storage tank and electrical lines. The service space needed and additional storage space is included below the flooring raised form the ground level. The used up water can be recycled and reused by systems installed in ceiling and flooring storage space. The living and working space are combined and the sauna space is designed not to waste the angular space of the house.
