From THE PASTOR

Dear Friends,

W

hat a great blessing to have Holy Trinity Catholic School. Students who receive a Catholic education are more likely as adults to be active leaders in their church and community and to educate their children in Catholic Schools. Holy Trinity Catholic School influences the minds of tomorrow’s leaders. Your support secures the foundation of Catholic education and builds a legacy that passes on our Catholic faith to the next generation. Your generous support makes all the difference. As we embark on our 10th academic year, please know that I, along with the faculty, staff and students of Holy Trinity Catholic School are extremely grateful for each and every one of our benefactors. I will continue to remember you and your family in the Mass and in my daily prayers. God bless you, Rev. Raymond Leonard Pastor

From OUR PRINCIPAL

Dear Holy Trinity Catholic School Family:

T

his is a very special year for Holy Trinity Catholic School as we embark on our tenth year of providing quality Catholic education in the Grand Strand area. As I look back over the past ten years, I am amazed at how far we have come and at how much we have accomplished. I am truly honored to be a part of such a special school community. Every day, Holy Trinity is blessed by the presence of its wonderful faculty, staff, students, families, and volunteers, as well as the pastoral leadership of Fr. Ray Leonard. Everything we do at Holy Trinity is based on our Catholic faith and the school theme of “Be These: Salt and Light for the World.” Anyone who comes to visit will see a campus that is alive with faith! Serving students and their families from PK through 8th grade, Holy Trinity is a special school that offers hands-on, engaging academics in a safe and loving Christian environment. Each year we continue to make improvements to our campus. Most recently, a new cantilever awning was installed in front of the school to provide protection during inclement weather as students are dropped off and picked up each day. We also made several improvements to the kitchen in our social hall in order to establish a new hot lunch program for our students. We continue to focus on our academics to ensure our students receive the best education possible. Algebra I and English I for high school credit are offered to qualifying 8th graders, and Exploratory class offerings now include woodshop, home economics, and health. We also have a school choir and a Lego robotics competition team. In August, we began a partnership with STEM Centers SC to become a certified STREAM school. STREAM schools engage students in learning experiences that focus on Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics. This booklet provides a small glimpse into the many opportunities and happenings here at Holy Trinity. Of course, I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge the fact that none of these things would be possible without the generosity, support, and prayers of all those connected to the school, especially the parishioners and friends of Our Lady Star of the Sea Church. I pray daily that God will continue to bless all those who are so generous and kind to our school. Blessings,

Karen E. Luzzo, B.A., M.S. Principal

A Year IN THE LIFE

A Year

In The Life

E

ach and every day of the school year brings new and exciting opportunities at Holy Trinity Catholic School. Our students, faculty, staff, and administration, as well as our families and friends, develop and grow in so many ways spiritually, academically, personally, and creatively throughout the year. The following photos highlight just some of the events, activities, and accomplishments of the past year.

Welcome Back Family Fiesta…

Students, their families, faculty, and staff enjoyed a special back to school Family Fiesta sponsored by our PTO. The food was delicious and the socializing was wonderful. It was a great way to kick off the new school year!

Our First ROAR Week…

The faculty really got into the spirit of things as they and the students celebrated our first “ROAR” week. R.O.A.R. is our positive behavior program that focuses on recognizing students who display Respectful, Organized, Appropriate, and Responsible behavior throughout the day. To celebrate this program and the start of a new year, students and faculty celebrated different themes each day. Most popular were, “Disney Day”, “Tourist Day”, and “Storybook Character Day".

A Year IN THE LIFE Harry Potter Halloween II… Students received their letters via owl mail from Hogwarts Academy inviting them to this year ’s Harry Potter Halloween Party. After being sorted into one of four “houses” they spent the day enjoying food and fun.

Social Outreach…

The faculty and staff of Holy Trinity are dedicated to teaching our students one of the key aspects of Christian faith… social outreach. After the hurricanes hit Puerto Rico, we held a car wash and raised enough money to buy two generators for a family of one of our students. It was great to see our school community pull together to help others in need.

A Year IN THE LIFE Supporting our New High School‌

The seventh and eighth graders traveled to Carolina Forest to attend the dedication ceremony at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton.

Lego Robotics Competition Team‌

Mrs. Michelle Harrison, middle school Science teacher, continued to develop our Lego Robotics Competition team this year. With the assistance of Mr. Jacob Ouellette, History and Theology student at Liberty University and son of our very own principal, the Trinity Lions researched and developed their solution to a water problem facing the Myrtle Beach area, designed and built their robot, and learned all about the core values of the First Lego League. They raised funds for their team by hosting a bake sale at school and the other students held a pep rally for the team before they attended a competition in Carolina Forest. They worked together and competed well. 6 | htcatholicschoolmyrtlebeach.com

A Year IN THE LIFE We Honor Our Veterans…

Students, faculty, and staff honored Veterans at our annual Veterans Day celebration. Guests enjoyed prayers, songs, and special tributes dedicated to all those who serve or have served in the US Military, as well as First Responders.

Honoring the Saints…

Mrs. Sedensky and her all-girl third grade class learned about the saints this year! They chose a specific saint, researched that saint, and then dressed as that Saint for our school mass on November 1. They greeted fellow students and parishioners as they arrived and shared a bit about their saints during mass.

Advent Outreach Project…

Faculty, staff, and students participated in an outreach project during the holiday season this year. They collected items and filled over 50 shoeboxes for children in need.

A Year IN THE LIFE A Visit from St. Nicholas and Our German Themed Christmas‌

Students received a visit from St. Nicholas on December 6th. He left oranges and chocolate coins in their shoes. Later that month, they enjoyed learning all about Christmas in Germany. They made Nutcrackers and gingerbread houses, played German games, and enjoyed traditional German foods. It was educational AND lots of fun!

Annual Christmas Program‌

Students celebrated the birth of Jesus by sharing a special program

entitled, Our Gifts of Song for Baby Jesus, with their families, the CCD

students and all the OLSS parishioners. Under the direction of our Music teacher, Mrs. Perrucci, students retold the story of Jesus' birth through

scripture readings and songs. It was a beautiful reminder for all of the true meaning of Christmas.

Students and staff had a wonderful time celebrating Catholic Schools Week 2018! It kicked off with a special school mass followed by a barbecue lunch and information session at OLSS. On Monday, the entire school joined all Catholic schools across the diocese to pray the rosary. On Tuesday, we held an open house where we toured and enrolled new families for the 2018-2019 academic year. On Wednesday, our grandparents joined us for brunch. Retreats were held Tuesday through Thursday for all grades and on Friday, we kicked off our Hoops/Jump Rope for Heart campaign. It was a great week full of fun, education, and special memories. We even were featured in the Catholic Miscellany as middle school students presented their Science Fair projects to a special

Special EVENTS

Graduation 2018

T

he graduation celebrations began with a school mass where our 8th graders served, read, and brought up the gifts for one last time as HTCS students. A few days later, the entire school gathered as Carson Phillips received a $1000 scholarship to attend St. Elizabeth Ann Seton High School and all graduates received various academic and fun awards from their teachers. Then, the graduates made their final walk through the halls of Holy Trinity while their fellow students cheered and clapped for them.

Academic FUN

Academics

Can Be Fun!

H

oly Trinity teachers are always looking for fun and creative ways to make learning meaningful and authentic for our students. Whether it be learning about the Medieval times or the Roman Empire, or experiencing the responsibilities of parenting “Flour Babies”, our teachers go out of their way to make every learning opportunity special for our students and their parents. Mrs. Ferrebee was a good sport, promising her students that if they performed well on their MAP testing she would let them throw a pie in her face. Even our parents get involved in the learning as this new “grandad” discovered when he had to babysit his flour “grandchild” one night.

Pastorial NEWS

Good Bye‌

In April, we bid a fond farewell to one of our biggest supporters, our pastoral leader, Fr. D. Anthony Droze. He was instrumental in ensuring that all families who wanted a Catholic education for their children would be able to do so at Holy Trinity Catholic School. We presented him with a framed photo of the students, faculty, and staff in front of the newly renovated chapel. We will miss him at HTCS and we wish him well in his new role as Parochial Vicar in the Diocese of Charleston.

Hello‌

In April, we welcomed our new pastoral leader, Fr. Ray Leonard. From the first day, he took the school under his wing and let us all know that he was committed to continuing the good things happening at HTCS. After celebrating mass, he joined the students in the classroom and on the playground.

From the DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT

Dear Valued Supporter of Holy Trinity Catholic School,

O

ffering a Catholic school that is dedicated to providing a caring, nurturing environment for its students and one that allows for an individualized educational curriculum when needed is certainly unique and truly a blessing for students attending Holy Trinity Catholic School and their families. With the combination of strong moral teaching and superior academics, Catholic schools serve as a ‘beacon of hope and light” according to Bishop Guglielmone. Catholic education presents us with the opportunity to help keep students focused on the presence of God in their lives and reinforce the importance of their faith. It is essential that we all commit to shepherding our youth and help to form the leadership of tomorrow. One measure of living our faith is how we are able to make a difference in the lives of others. It is with this in mind that we ask for your consideration to join us as we support the Holy Trinity Catholic School Annual Fund. The economic challenges of a Catholic education are truly evident at Holy Trinity Catholic School. Tuition increases are necessary each year but may force some families to consider leaving the school, which would negatively impact their greatest gift – their children. The Annual Fund supports tuition assistance for families who qualify and also supports school projects that cannot be covered in the school budget. As you know, we are celebrating the 10th Anniversary of Holy Trinity Catholic School and its mission to provide a quality, Catholic Education for all youngsters who are presently enrolled at the school and those who will attend the school in the future. Please accept this invitation to invest in the youth of Holy Trinity Catholic School so that its mission can continue well in to the future. If you would like to make your donation on-line, please go to the school web site at: www.htcatholicschoolmyrtlebeach.com and click on the “giving page. The Annual Fund Goal for 2018–2019 is $175,000, which includes tuition assistance funds and money for projects not included in the regular school budget. If you would like to pledge a certain amount to the Annual Fund and contribute monthly, please complete the appropriate section on the “giving card” included with this Annual Report. Again, thank you so much for your wonderful support. If you have any questions regarding development efforts for the school, please do not hesitate to call me. Also, please know that you are remembered in prayer by our school community each day. God bless you for your generosity. OLSS Special Collections $33,490

Ways to GIVE

Dear Families, Parishioners, and Valued Supporters of Holy Trinity,

I

cannot believe our “little school” is about to celebrate its tenth anniversary this year! Who knew when we first opened our doors with just a handful of teachers and only 22 students that we would be where we are today? I feel truly blessed to have been a part of this amazing journey from the very beginning. As the saying goes, “Where there is hope, there is faith. Where there is faith, miracles happen.” Now, with over 80 students in grades Preschool through 8th, as well as a full faculty and staff, we have truly shown how having faith has allowed miracles to happen. As we begin our tenth academic year, we look to make additional improvements to our programs, curriculum, and facilities, as well as continuing projects that have started in previous years. Last year, we were able to make several upgrades to our kitchen and in July, we received our DHEC approval. We are now serving hot lunches to our students five days a week. We also installed a cantilever canopy across the sidewalk in front of the school this summer. Now, our students and staff are protected from inclement weather during the morning arrival and afternoon pick up process. This year, our annual fund campaign will be focused on continuing improvements to our academic programs and campus, as well as providing scholarships for students in need. We would like to extend the cantilever canopy from the front of the school to the social hall and eventually to the chapel, so that students and faculty can access the entire campus safely regardless of the weather conditions. We would also like to add more technology and STREAM (Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Arts, and Math) related resources in our classrooms. This year we were able to put Chromebooks in the hands of all of our sixth through eighth grade students, but we would like to be able to do so for our fifth grade students as well. And as always, we would like to provide financial assistance to our families who otherwise would not be able to afford a Catholic education for their children. Making it possible to provide the improvements mentioned in this letter will allow Holy Trinity Catholic School to continue to meet the needs of our students, their families, and our faculty. It will also ensure that we continue to deliver a superior academic and spiritual program. We are asking for your support in accomplishing these goals. As always, everyone at Holy Trinity is extremely grateful for your donations. I ask that you continue to support HTCS through your prayers and through your financial gifts. Your faith is a blessing to us and will allow miracles to happen. May God continue bless you always! Blessings,

Karen Luzzo, Principal

Ways to GIVE

T

HOLY TRINITY CATH0LIC SCHOOL 2017 – 2018 ANNUAL FUND APPEAL ANNUAL FUND

he Annual Fund Drive for Holy Trinity Catholic School begins with this Annual Report Mailing. A card and envelope for the Annual Fund are enclosed with this Report. The return card gives donors the opportunity to make a one-time contribution or pledge a certain amount for ten months beginning in September and ending in June of 2019. The Annual Fund supports both scholarship and project needs

AN IRA “GIFT FOR GOOD”

Individuals 70 ½ years of age and older can transfer up to $100,000 of IRA assets directly to a charity without the money being included as income for tax purposes. Each spouse has this option, giving married coupes the opportunity to donate up to $200,000. This preserves the full amount for charity and allows donors to do this during their lifetime, rather than waiting to give through estate plans. For individuals 70 ½ years of age and older, a qualified charitable distribution can count towards the required minimum distribution (RMD). This offers a distinct advantage over taking a taxable IRA distribution and then contributing the proceeds of that distribution to a charity. That’s because taxable IRA distributions must be included in adjusted gross income. By donating IRA assets to charity, beneficiaries/heirs are not burdened by the potential taxes associated with receiving IRA assets upon your death. Use funds to create a lasting legacy! Provide financial support to Holy Trinity Catholic School and make a significant, meaningful difference while enjoying tax advantages.
