Welcome to our quarterly September issue, In the Antipodes we welcome Spring our gardens blooming with flowers, and a feeling of optimism in the air. A regeneration of the new. Some of you in the northern hemisphere are coming home from your long awaited holidays very likely suntanned and relaxed Lucky you! We introduce some new pieces that have just landed from Greece All our pieces are 100% made in Greece, and we know you will love them! In this issue, we are excited to introduce you to Helen Kapelos. Helen is a distinguished Australian journalist, documentary film maker and motivational speaker Talking with Helen, I was struck by her determination and passion in what she believes in. We also shared a sense that we had known each other for a lifetime. Perhaps sharing our paternal ancestry in northern Greece has something to do with it As we celebrate this Father's Day, we asked Helen about her father in Greece, her projects, and ( of course) her favourite places to visit in Greece. We also profile the stunning new Isla Brown Corinthia, a Resort Hotel & Spa designed by an impressive architectural powerhouse in Athens.

It's All Greek To Me
Vases are like ancient photographs They show scenes that Greek authors thought were too ordinary and routine to write about. But they are also like movies, depicting busy mythological scenes of gods, heroes and mortals in action Pottery art was like a window into the Greek imagination In ancient times, pottery was used for basic household purposes, such as storing food, perfumes, cosmetics, wine, oil and water Merchants also utilized large pots to transport bulk goods by ship They also found there was huge international demand throughout the Mediterranean for highly decorated Greek pottery, which came in a great variety of shapes and designs These included the amphora, the krater, the kylix, the loutrophoros and the chous Pottery artwork first flourished under the great Minoan and Mycenaean civilizations (1800 1200 BC) Minoan frescoes and artefacts stun the modern observer with their brightly coloured scenes of daily life, and of animals, marine life, flowers and flowing shapes In later times the Mycenaeans continued some of the Minoan traditions, but added more military imagery, including battle scenes.
A great way to see the ancient Greek world is to see what artists depicted on vases. The museums of Greece are full of vases of all kinds that were manufactured on pottery wheels, and which feature figurative imagery and geometric patterns of enormous variety Artists tried to capture moments of everyday life, showing what Greeks did at work, at home and at play.

By the 700s and 600s BC, the Greek city states of Corinth and Athens emerged as the leading manufacturers of pottery And as production levels increased, so too did the quality of artwork
Archaeologists talk of the Geometric period (around 900BCE), when pottery artwork slowly revived with more complex and evocative linear designs and repetitive bands of geometric motifs Soon Greek vases were in high demand in cities outside of Greece, and throughout the Mediterranean world
After the collapse of the Mycenaean civilization around 1200 BC, Greece entered a 'dark age', during which the quality of pottery and artwork deteriorated
The greatest commercial and pottery producing powerhouse of the time, Corinth, pioneered the 'Black Figure' Vase. This style featured figures in black silhouettes which exposed a red background By the late 500s BC, the Corinthians were superseded by the Athenians, who adapted the Corinthian style and developed the 'Red Figure' Attic design Local artists preferred it because it gave them more artistic control, allowing them to apply subtler and finer details of the human form, such as muscles, and facial expression

KapelosHELEN meet
You may remember her gracing our screens with the latest headlines Growing up in the city of Newcastle in New South Wales, Helen went on to become a widely recognised journalist andnewsbroadcaster However,Helenwasalwaysdestinedtodo much more than this She took up a leadership role as the Chairperson of the Multicultural Commission of Victoria. Here she led social justice reform and won multiple awards She initiated an internship program at the ABC Australia for people of non English speaking background an Australian first More recently, she has been a leading advocate for building global awareness of medicinal cannabis She has worked closely with local and internationalpioneersintheresearchandmanufacturing Suchis her passion that Helen personally bootstrapped the production of an award winning documentary about medicinal cannabis called 'A Life on its Own' She has also been awarded the highly prized Vice Chancellors Fellowship for Multicultural Engagement at Swinburne University, Australia. Helen has also authored a book on everyday multiculturalism called 'Proud to Belong' . She is a proud Greek Australian, with ties to ancient Corinth and KassandrainnorthernGreece

I think the amount of community engagement with CALD [Culturally and Linguistically Diverse] women That helped achieve reform in Family Violence policy And also my experiences with the African Australian community, and developing a media internship program with the ABC for aspiring journalists from non English speaking backgrounds We think we know what others are going through, but we really don't understand lived experience. It taught me that resilience and persistence are key to pushing through systemic barriers The migrant experience is different for everyone, but I am so grateful to have been raised in a household where culture and ancestral strength were embraced and cherished, and where the Australian culture was also championed My dad called his three kids "Greek Kangaroos".
g ?
What is your proudest achievement as Chairperson of the Multicultural Commission of Victoria ?
Trust is the most important currency and always remember this is the long game Remember your 'why', and guard your integrity fiercely It's a privilege to be able to tell people's stories You are invited into their homes and worlds, giving people a voice who don't have a voice. Truth telling and accountability is necessary for all society I have loved every moment of my career for this reason. meet

It all started when I was a reporter on the Sunday Night program (Channel 7) and was assigned a story on medicinal cannabis The story location was Tamworth in Country NSW, and it was led by Dan Haslam, a young 24 year old man battling stage 4 bowel cancer His parents led a nationwide campaign and I was fortunate enough to meet the incredible Dan, whose legacy proved a catalyst for the legalisation of medicinal cannabis in Australia in 2017 At the time I decided to leave Seven and make a documentary called 'A Life Of It's Own', which was filmed in Australia and Israel It aired on Netflix, SBS, and Foxtel, and continues to be streamed in various locations around the world I continue to work in the industry as an advocate because I believe medicinal cannabis is a high value health solution and a healthcare option that should be considered in the range of treatments available for conditions, from anxiety to multiple sclerosis and epilepsy. Whose style do you most admire?
What inspired you to advocate for medicinal cannabis?
Aquarelle, Mani Foneas Beach Kardamyli Athens
Gosh! All of it really Growing up with a mum who displayed beautiful mastery as a dressmaker and a father who was a superb tailor they had their own business for a while I have always admired quality fabrics We spent a lot of time in material stores I remember! My dad used to pick my news eading jackets when I visited him in Thessaloniki, and they were always admired He had the eye! Sadly mum passed away in my early twenties, so we relied on dad for a lot of things, even clothes advice! I also appreciate great design and have always loved Scandinavian inspired homes and places I love visiting Scandi countries And of course, definitely an art lover (minimalism, mpressionism such as en plein air) I love iterature and of course people! I'm a professional people watcher, that's for certain. meet

Delphi, Ancient Corinth, Meteroa in northern Greece, Cape Sounion For the islands Milos and Mykonos I love so many places! On this trip, the highlights to stay have been Perivolas in Santorini and Xenodocheio Milos in Athens. Xenodocheio is a new hotel with a beautiful philosophy It's one of the best experiences I've had The rooms are spacious and I loved their spa to rejuvenate. I also loved the food at the Milos Estiatorio restaurant in the hotel
Another cool favourite is Birdman, for some Japanese yiakitori in Meteora

What is next for Helen Kapelos ? I am stepping up efforts in the medicinal cannabis space, and my next obsession will be creating a model of guided education that truly reaches the community: that empowers people to make an informed choice for themselves and loved ones Wish me luck!! meet
What valuable lessons have you learned from your father?
He;len's father still mends her Hclothes elen and her father Dimitris
I'm currently obsessed with Nora Ephron's life and legacy and have read all of her books I'm working my way through Joan Didion's work I have always loved her work. I also just finished a bunch of biographies Selma Blair, Andrew McCartney, Christopher Reeve, Christopher Plummer, Michael J Fox) In terms of music, I like Bony Shelter, Todd Terje and Vampire Weekend. I've been watching The Martha Mitchell Effect, Stranger Things (a newcomer to this series!), and 90's movies most of which are cringeworthy to be honest, but I am loving them for some reason!
Family lunch in northern Greece I have learned the most valuable lessons from my father: that everyone is an equal and to really live in the moment. And as he often says to me, enjoy enjoy life! Don't spend your life trying to make millions Connect and inspire people and live with purpose I owe so much to him He is very much a people person, but also guided by intuition I love his wisdom He certainly wasn't the model father growing up, but he's always loved his children very much and he lets us know how much we mean to him. You can't ask for more than that Tell us what you ' re watching and reading right now.
