PRESENTATION IS EVERYTHING! Hello and welcome to the next issue of Evolve, So much has happened in the world since the last edition it’s hard to know where to start.

Western Australia dealt with bushfires, New South Wales and south-east Queensland battled crippling floods, and we are all trying to come through the pains that COVID-19 continues to deliver. Wherever you are, we sincerely hope you and your family are holding up. If you are struggling please take advantage of the government services on offer. They can make a difference.

Some time ago, out for dinner at a lovely steak restaurant with several of our customers, we had an interesting conversation. The average price for a steak was $69. Not cheap by any means, but the venue was wonderful, and the service excellent.

I asked a question to the group. I wanted to know if everyone was happy paying $69 for a steak? Yes, was the response from all. I then asked if they would pay the same price at the café next door, even if the steak was identical? Everyone said the same, it was no. The reasons for this response were compelling; there was a big difference between the venue and service, the attention to detail and the ambience. In other words: the look, the feel and how they make you feel (service).

Being the cheeky person I am at times, I then asked why they were complaining about their customer’s attitudes and behaviours when their workshop looked and felt like the café they wouldn’t pay $69 for a steak in? What did they expect? I can imagine many of you will know the sort of responses I received with this comment.

Whether we like it or not, the truth is most people judge a book by its cover and their perceptions are their reality, especially so in the transactional space. i.e. the world you/we live in.

More automotive workshops need to keep presentation in mind. People have a lot of choice when it comes to the servicing and repair of their vehicle, and presentation plays a significant role in deciding who they will commit to.

As they say, you only have one chance to make a first impression. A well-presented workshop says a lot about who you are and how you work. It says you are organised, that you have an attention to detail, that you take pride in your place, your workmanship and the vehicles you work on. These basics are remembered.

I see so many workshops where people, equipment and walls are filthy. This is something older generations might have accepted and/or expected. They grew up seeing the local mechanic with oil and grease everywhere, with parts and equipment scattered over the floors and thrown on shelves, the same dirty person working on the car also greeting them and handing back the keys.

But our industry has evolved and so too has customer expectation. The dealerships are fiercely trying to retain and find new customers, offering five years’ free servicing and the like. They are doing everything they can to stop their customers taking their vehicles to independent specialists and repairers. Once in, customers get Wi-Fi, free flat whites and space to work.

The receptions are inviting, welcoming and comfortable, the workshop floors like Formula 1 garages.

Don’t lose, or put off, customers by not investing effort into how your business presents. Ensure your people are the best you can get and that your business stands out for the right reasons.

Make it a place where people feel confident, comfortable and happy to hand over their expensive Euro vehicles to you. It doesn’t matter whether you charge the same, or more, for your service. If you get this right, people quickly move past the cost and your profits will grow.

Why? Because perception is everything.

BOSCH TEAMS UP WITH PENSKE AUTOSPORT Bosch Motorsport and the Dragon / Penske Autosport Formula E Team have agreed on a longterm technology and engineering partnership for the Los Angeles & UK headquartered racing team’s cars in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.

Within the framework of this cooperation, Bosch will be developing an electronic vehicle management system specially tailored to the requirements of the Formula E vehicle along with the corresponding hardware and software components required.

The system core is represented by the central MS 50.4P vehicle control unit (VCU). Apart from the motor functions and central energy management, the MS 50.4P also controls other vehicle functions such as brake energy recovery and the display in the driver cockpit.

enhances our successful involvement as a series sponsor of Formula E,” according to Dr. Markus Heyn, member of the board of management at Robert Bosch GmbH. “With this partnership, Bosch underscores its claim as a leading supplier of powertrain management solutions, both in electromobility

Plans entail deploying the innovative vehicle management system in a race for the first time this autumn. Preparations are already underway. Bosch is also planning to develop an entire electric powertrain for Formula E for the Gen3 cars.

DEFENDER WINS WOMEN’S WORLD CAR OF THE YEAR 2021 The impressive Land Rover Defender has been named the winner of the Women’s World Car of the Year 2021. This is the first time a Land Rover has won the top prize at the awards, and is the latest in a series of international honours for the most capable Land Rover ever made.

This is the only car award in the world with a jury made up exclusively of women; the Women’s World Car of the Year (WWCOTY) awards are judged by 50 motoring journalists from 38 countries across five continents.

CHARGEFOX OPENS UP MELBOURNE-TO-SYDNEY ROUTE FOR EV DRIVERS seen as a barrier to EV uptake with questions about the feasibility of a trip from Melbourne to Sydney common amongst prospective EV buyers. THE CARS THE CELEBS DRIVE If you are an established star, the chances of you owning a Toyota Corolla or a Kia Cerato are unlikely.

With money comes expensive cars and the Hollywood elite live the high life.

Electric vehicles (EV) have been a firm favorite down Rodeo Drive for some time now, in fact California is one of the biggest markets for EVs in the world. According to the California Energy Commission (2021), the state sold 145,099 EVs in 2020, which represents between 45 and 50 per cent of total US EV sales.

So it’ll be no surprise to read that, according to Moneybeach, the Tesla Model S was the most popular car with Hollywood’s A listers. Stars like Will Smith, Demi Moore and Hulk star Mark Ruffalo all enjoy this zero-emission car.

But what else hits the mark? The Bentleigh Continental GT was the

preferred drive for soccer stars David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo, as well as tennis legend Serena Williams; while Arnold Schwarzenegger, Renee Zellweger and comedian Kevin Hart prefer the boxy design of the luxurious

MERCEDES-BENZ’S MBUX HYPERSCREEN: the big in-car cinema Forget about the car makers that boast about their eight or 10 inch entertainment unit, that was so 2020, because in the 2021 Mercedes-Benz EQS electric sedan you’ll experience a 1.4 metre - yes metre - curved hyperscreen that stretches across the entire width from the left to the right A-pillar.

That’s a total of just over 2,432 cm2 of distortion free screen that includes all content as well as menu shortcuts, all of which can be tailored to the driver’s behaviours. That means if it’s not on show it’s because you don’t use it.

Mercedes’ MBUX Hyperscreen includes three easy to operate displays: the instrument cluster, a central infotainment touchscreen and a further screen that can be enjoyed by the front passenger.

Using artificial intelligence, the system knows that you call your mum every Tuesday at 6pm – so on that day and time the number will be displayed so you don’t have to find it. Clever. It also recognises potholes and speed humps well in advance to ensure your drive is super smooth.

The passenger side screen can be customised with the features that are important to you, and when it’s not in use its hides the settings with a stunning night sky design – where the visual cues could be inspired by Vincent Van Gogh’s priceless artwork Starry Night. It’s a truly impressive system.

Electrifying appearance The MBUX Hyperscreen is an example of digital/analogue design fusion: several displays appear to blend seamlessly, resulting in an

impressive, curved screen band.

Analogue air vents are integrated into this large digital surface to connect the digital and physical world.

The MBUX Hyperscreen is surrounded by a continuous plastic front frame. Its visible part is painted in an elaborate three-layer process in “Silver Shadow”. This coating system achieves a particularly high-quality surface impression due to extremely thin intermediate layers.

The integrated ambient lighting installed in the lower part of the MBUX Hyperscreen makes the display unit appear to float on the instrument panel.

The passenger also has its own display and operating area, which makes travel more pleasant and entertaining. With up to seven profiles, it is possible to customise the content.

If the passenger seat is not occupied, the screen becomes a digital

decorative part. In this case animated stars are displayed.

For a particularly brilliant image, OLED technology is used in the central and passenger displays. This is where the individual image points are self-luminous; non-controlled image pixels remain switched off, which means that they appear deep black.

The classic cockpit display with two circular instruments has been reinterpreted with a digital laser sword in a glass lens.

The MBUX system proactively displays the right functions at the right time for the user, supported by artificial intelligence.

Thanks to its clear screen design

The context-sensitive awareness is constantly optimised by changes in the surroundings and user behaviour.

The so-called zero-layer - or home screen - provides the user at the top level of the MBUX information

architecture with dynamic, aggregated content from the entire MBUX system and related services.

Mercedes-Benz has investigated the usage behaviour of the first MBUX generation (from the current A-Class). Most of the use cases fall in the navigation, radio/media and telephony categories, the navigation application is therefore always at the centre of the screen unit with full functionality.

It’s one of those impressive systems that will be enjoyable to navigate around and you have control over what you want easy access to. It’s the way of the future and in coming years you can expect to see similar software available on more premium nameplates.

The MBUX Hypercsreen will make its Mercedes-Benz debut in the fully electric EQS, the premium brand’s alternative to the Audi e-tron GT and Porsche Tycan, to name two.

THE (TCR) WORLD

ACCORDING TO CHAZ While Supercars is the mainstay for motorsport in Australia, there is a new kid on the block and it’s forcing many racing fans to take notice and get on board.

TCR Australia has quickly established itself as the main rival to Supercars. But let’s be up front here, TCR does not need to see itself in competition with Supercars, nor do they need to fear each other, there is plenty of room for these two great series to co-exist.

Supercars is about the Ford Mustang v the Holden Commodore, blue versus red and the history that goes with that, while TCR includes the C-segment sedans and hatches that are powered by productionbased engines up to two litres in capacity. Audi RS v Alfa Romeo v Renault Megane v Peugeot 308, plus others. It has a very different following and racing is quite different from what we experience in Supercars.

Promoted by the Australian Racing Group, TCR staged its debut season in 2019 and it raised immediate interest. While Will Brown – who now drives for Erebus Motorsport – won the inaugural season, the series won over a host of big names like Russell Ingall, Jason Bright, Garth Tander, Tony D’Alberto and Molly Taylor.

And that’s the thing about TCR, it’s attracting the stars. And they are not Supercars outcasts either.

After the cancellation of the 2020 season thanks to COVID-19, the 2021 alumni includes highly regarded endurance race co-drivers Lee Holdsworth, Michael Caruso and James Moffat, as well as Supercars superstar Chaz Mostert.

And he was keen as mustard to get involved.

“When the series first came here I’d been talking to a few people about doing it but the calendars never lined up with Supercars until this year,” Mostert said. “So I put

a few feelers out and got involved with Melbourne Performance Centre who were more involved in the GT Series, but managed to race in TCR as well. My engineer in Supercars – Adam DeBorre – also has an affiliation with MPC and it kind of all came together that way.”

Having driven Fords and Holdens for the last several years, this year he is racing an Audi RS. It’s a car that challenges him, but he’s loving every minute.

“The Audi requires a completely different driving style to extract the best lap time, but the ergonomics of the car are great,” Mostert said.

“Having paddle shifts, and based off the road car, it’s amazing how much of a race car it is.

“It can be just a little bit loose at times because it’s a front-wheel drive and the Michelin slicks have heaps of grip, but it’s a nice little handful. It’s a great car to drive.”

The beauty of this series is its competitiveness and, according to

Mostert, this is the main reason why it’s attracting a legion of fans.

“I think it’s like every motorsport category, people want to see different winners, they want to see different cars at the front, and different teams at the front,” Mostert said. “TCR gives fans a real mix and anyone can win on their day.

“With the nuances of the car anyone can make a mistake, there are passing opportunities, there is so much action. It also appeals to a different demographic. I grew up with a Honda Civic, it’s great to see these cars racing and I think the fans appreciate this.”

In a way the success of the series is twofold, the cars and drivers make it entertaining and super competitive.

“The series has some really stiff competition,” Mostert said.

“There’re quite a few ex-Supercar drivers involved, and they’re always superfast. They keep you honest.

“But there are also some really young up ‘n’ comers involved and they’re super, super quick. They remind you that you’re starting to get a little bit old!

“It’s been a great start for us in the Championship (and) I’d like to keep building on the momentum.

“The series has a very diverse range of drivers and on any weekend any car can be stronger than others. It’s a great series.”

“I’m waiting to see if I can do the entire season, that’s the intention and the goal, to make all of this happen. I obviously want to try and go out there and try and win the series. We’ll see how we go.”

If you look at the results from the opening two rounds, at Tasmania’s Symmons Plains Raceway and Phillip Island in Victoria, Mostert and Holdsworth enjoyed immediate success on Series debut, alongside youngster Jordan Cox. The Supercars race winners also featured at PI, as did D’Alberto and former Bathurst champion Jason Bargwanna.

With Mostert leading the championship after two rounds, while he’s enjoying the success he’s not currently confirmed as a full series starter.

“You don’t know what you’ve got ‘til you arrive, but the opening two

Time will tell, but in an ideal world he’ll be there.

“I’m obviously enjoying it at the moment, if I’m still enjoying it at the end of the year and everything aligns from a calendar perspective, we’ll work out what we can do,” Mostert said. “If there is an opportunity to keep racing in TCR I’d be 100 per cent in.”

This can lead to motor knocking and therefore serious motor damage.

This phenomenon is not entirely understood yet, but this risk can be reduced by using the right motor oil.

60 Ye a rs Young: Jaguar commissions 2021 versions of the classic E-Type In the last edition of Evolve we introduced the 2020 edition of the 1965 Aston Martin DB5 – the ultimate James Bond car – which was part of the car maker’s ‘continuation car programme’. Since then its British cross-town rival Jaguar has done the same with its striking E-Type.

In March, Jaguar recognised the 60th anniversary of the headturning E-Type, which was an instant sensation from launch and synonymous with the swinging sixties.

To mark the occasion, Jaguar Classic has unveiled its first matched pair of E-Type 60 Collection cars, and revealed full specification details for the 12 expertly restored and sympathetically uprated 3.8-litre E-Types built to celebrate the iconic sports car.

The E-Type made its world debut in Geneva, Switzerland on 15 March 1961. The public reaction to the lone coupé available for test drives was so strong that Jaguar rushed a second E-Type, a roadster, from Coventry to Geneva overnight.

Six decades later, the E-Type 60 Collection pays tribute to these two legendary cars: the Opalescent Gunmetal Grey coupé ‘9600 HP’, driven ‘flat out’ by Bob Berry to make the launch itself, and the British Racing Green roadster ’77 RW’, driven by Norman Dewis who was told to ‘drop everything’ to get to Geneva the next day.

The most distinctive visual highlight for each of the specially produced cars is an engraving by artist and designer King Nerd on the centre console of each car, recalling the drive routes from Coventry to Geneva of those original cars. Each piece of art takes more than 100 hours to create by hand, in consultation with the owner.

The E-Type 60 Collection cars, which are sold as a pair (one E-Type 60 Edition coupé, one E-Type 60 Edition roadster) are finished in exclusive Flat Out Grey and Drop Everything Green paint colours respectively. These colour formulations are inspired by the original 1961 colours and won’t be used on any other Jaguar.

“Sixty years after its unveiling at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1961, the talented team at Jaguar Classic are releasing the ultimate birthday present to the E-Type: The E-Type 60 Collection,” Dan Pink, Director, Jaguar Classic, said.

The cars also feature a range of unique E-Type 60 design elements developed in conjunction with Julian Thomson, Jaguar Design Director; subtle enhancements for improved usability and driveability including a five-speed manual gearbox and enhanced cooling; plus the Jaguar Classic Infotainment System with built-in satellite navigation and Bluetooth connectivity.

“The attention to detail demonstrates how this project has been a labour of love for our designers, engineers, craftspeople and partners. Exquisite detailing combined with enhanced usability ensure these E-Types will be coveted and enjoyed for decades to come by their discerning owners.”

Restored and refined by the experts at Jaguar Classic in Coventry, the E-Type 60 Collection cars combine flawless quality and exceptional engineering know-how.

The most significant mechanical upgrade is a specially-developed five-speed manual gearbox which features synchromesh on all ratios, helical cut gears and a reinforced cast aluminium casing for enhanced reliability and greater durability as well as closer gear ratios and smoother changes.

The 265bhp 3.8-litre six-cylinder XK engine benefits from an authentic 1961-style alloy radiator, with electric cooling fan and electronic ignition for everyday usability, as well as a polished stainless steel exhaust system.

This new exhaust system is dimensionally identical to the standard mild steel system but produces a slightly deeper tone and offers greater longevity.

The highlight of the visual enhancements is a unique piece of metal engraving created by prominent artist and world-leading engraver, King Nerd. Johnny ‘King Nerd’ Dowell has inscribed the stainless steel centre consoles of the 12 cars with a bespoke etching

relevant to each E-Type 60 Edition.

Each Smooth Black leather-trimmed coupé features a stylised route map plotting the key locations along the route taken by Bob Berry, with an overhead sketch of the E-Type and the words, ‘I thought you’d never get here’, recalling the reaction of Jaguar founder Sir William Lyons to Bob’s arrival just minutes before the unveiling.

For the six Suede Green leathertrimmed roadsters, the engraving tracks the route taken by Dewis on his last-minute drive to Switzerland, with a sketch of the car and another Lyons’ quote – this time his instructions to Norman: ‘Drop everything and bring the open top E-Type over.’

“This was a fantastic opportunity to design and engrave the stories of two epic drives by two Jaguar legends in these iconic and special cars,” Johnny Dowell, artist and designer ‘King Nerd’, said.

“A permanent reminder of the anniversary, everywhere these E-Types go, the memory of Bob

Berry and Norman Dewis will travel with them.”

In addition to the centre console, the bonnet badge, clock face within the tachometer, fuel cap and chassis plate are all finished with a commemorative E-Type 60 logo created by Jaguar Design, featuring the years ‘1961-2021’. A light beechrimmed steering wheel, as fitted to 1961 cars, features a 24-carat gold horn push.

Every car is supplied with a tailormade E-Type 60 car cover, tool roll and jack storage bags to complete the enhancements and exemplify the attention to detail lavished on each vehicle.

Come winter 2022, the six customers and their guests will take part in the ultimate E-Type pilgrimage; a Coventry-to-Geneva drive experience with their cars to create their own E-Type memories, enjoying breath-taking scenery, epic roads – including iconic Alpine passes – exclusive stays and fine cuisine throughout the trip.

What does one of Australia’s most respected automotive journalists one that has grabbed the industry media by the scruff of the neck and shaken it harder than anyone else have parked in his garage? A Suzuki Jimny. But not one. Two. That’s right.

Two. You may have heard of Alborz Fallah.

Describing him as a journalist is short-changing him. He was the man behind CarAdvice - one of the automotive industry’s top websites.

Fallah and his business partners did so well with the website that Channel 9 paid them a squillion to hand over the keys and it is now in the process of burying the wellknown name for good and rebranding it using the company’s original auto masthead. Strange move given the significant outlay, but that’s business.

That’s OK though because Fallah, while disappointed that the baby he reared is no longer, has moved on to bigger and better things.

Fallah has lived an incredible life. Of Iranian descent, his parents lived in

Michigan, USA, in the mid-1970s, his dad finished a PhD there and his mum a Masters degree, before they returned to their country of birth during the Iranian Revolution - hoping to help rebuild it.

Born in Iran during the Iran-Iraq war and living in a town right on the Iraqi border, Fallah has vivid memories of “missiles and bombs falling around us, buildings in ruin and acid rain”.

With US/Iran relationships in tatters, the family was unable to escape Iran for the US, so settled in Australia.

Brisbane to be exact.

Many describe Fallah as an entrepreneur, and they’d be right.

He has never been afraid to give something ago. At 12 he created one of the country’s most successful blogging/publishing platforms, one that attracted 60,000 users each month. But he closed that at 14 because his parents were bankrolling him to the tune of $200/month and he thought that was unfair. He ran a computer store, internet cafes, SEO and marketing companies, built computer games as a kid and sold

merch for bands. As he said, some were successful, some were not, but in these initial years he learned a lot about how to succeed in business by failing often. And he has no regrets.

A bit of a tech geek (yep he’s the one queueing outside the Apple store 48 hours before the next iPhone is released) he lives and breathes cars.

His earliest memory was sitting on his dad’s lap, steering the family Peugeot 504 around the war-torn streets of home. But his favourite memory involves a Lamborghini Diablo – and it’s what set him on the road to where he is now.

“I was at Coles with my mum and a guy rocks up in a black Diablo and it blew me away,” Fallah said.

“I was nine or ten, the guy saw my expression and asked if I wanted

to sit in it. It was my first “wow” moment, and when I realised I wanted these things in my life.”

And from there all roads lead to a career in motoring and supercar ownership. While he unashamedly admits he spends the majority of his time driving press cars - a critical part of a motoring journo’s job - he has built an enviable garage, in more ways than one.

Having recently completed his dream house, Fallah has two garages that can comfortably park up to 14 cars.

There is the, what you could only refer to as, daily commute garage.

It includes one of the Jimnys and a couple of family cars, a Jaguar and an Audi. Then there is the … showroom (pictured).

Fallah’s supercar showroom is truly remarkable. Showroom specification Italian tiles and LED strip lighting turn this garage into something you would expect at a premium brand new car launch. And in it sits a collection of vehicles so impressive you almost have to see it to believe it.

There’s an Aston Martin Vantage N400, a Mercedes-Benz SLS Gullwing, a Ferrari 458 Speciale, the Lotus Elise, the slick Lamborghini Huracan Performante and the recently acquired Mitsubishi 3000GT with a new GR Yaris Rallye on its way.

While he loves them all, his favourite - if he had to choose one - is his first purchase, the Aston Martin.

“The N400 is a super rare version of the Vantage, it’s the Nürburgring edition,” Fallah said.

“I remember driving an Aston Martin press car over the Storey Bridge in Brisbane, I fell in love with the idea of owning one, so as soon as I had a little bit of money I bought one.

“Although I couldn’t really afford it, I made it happen and it was a life changing moment for me. It opened the doors to so many new people that I wouldn’t have otherwise met and changed my life trajectory in regard to how I think and what I wanted to do.”

The Gullwing was purchased as a wedding anniversary gift to his wife,

stemming from their wedding where they used one as a key part of the day, and in wedding photography.

“If we are going somewhere special I’ll take the Merc,” Fallah said. “It’s a classic car, one of the most beautiful out there. The doors go up, everyone looks at you. It’s a little less flashy compared to a supercar but it turns heads because it’s rare.”

He admits the Lamborghini gives him goosebumps every time he drives it, but the Ferrari 458 is, by far, the best car he’s owned.

“F*#! I love this car, every time I go through a tunnel I hear the most beautiful car sound you’ll ever hear, it sounds like a Formula One car,” Fallah said.

“The Ferrari scares the crap out of me every time I drive it. It’s loose, slidey and agile. It’s like being in a gokart with 600hp. I get out after a rapid mountain run with my hands slightly shaking. If I want something stable, slick and fast I’ll take the Lambo.

“But I don’t really get to drive them much. The odd late-night run or on weekends. I’m actually quite conscious that they will lose their specialness if they become my daily drive.”

Returning to the Suzukis. Fallah bought one so he could go offroading with his mates. But he quickly pimped it out to look like a Mercedes G Wagon (hence the J Wagon plates), which led to a second Jimny in the family.

Now, a couple of years after selling CarAdvice, all his time is going into building CarExpert – which went live about a year ago.

Privately owned, CarExpert has a noadvertising-support approach making it truly independent and removing any notion of bias (not that there

ever would be). If that doesn’t set it apart from the competition, this will. Having already opened its first store, over the next few years it will open a series of additional stores at Westfield shopping centers to better help people chose their next car.

“Rather than going from dealer to dealer, you can take a look at some of the top 20 best-selling cars in Australia, check them out side by side and even test drive them,” Fallah said.

“You don’t need to waste a whole weekend doing this, they’re all here.

We don’t sell cars, we simply provide an experience and expert advice and if the customer wants to buy a car, we grab their details and refer them to the local dealership. It’s a brand agnostic experience.”

With plenty of hard work ahead of him, Fallah will continue to reward himself. The next supercar bound for the garage is the Lexus LFA, he’s always wanted one. But the car that gets him out of bed each morning is the Pagani Zonda. He has a technical drawing of the auto masterpiece on his garage wall to help him keep his eyes on the prize and maintain business motivation.

“I really want the Zonda, but they are between $8-12 million, crazy money,” Fallah said.

“I had the chance to experience Adam Kaplan’s yellow one in 2009 and wow! I will have to own one,I don’t think its an option. Likely keep it in the garage. I don’t want to even drive it. It’s a piece of artwork. Once I have this I know nothing can top it… maybe.”

If you walked into a local auto repairer and saw that on the wall would you walk straight out to find someone more committed to your wheels, or would you first seek to understand why?

Doherty did what many auto shop owners do, he started his career undertaking an apprenticeship and gaining an appreciation for German engineered cars and how specialised you had to be to get the best result for the customer. His passion and ambition led him to pursuing a workshop manager role at a small workshop and then, looking for a bigger challenge, he parted ways and opened his first workshop with business partner Mark Mcnally, based in North Fremantle.

This philosophy is obviously paying dividends because after four very successful years in North Freo, a second workshop was opened in Nedlands, a little closer to Perth.

“Whether it was the word-of-mouth growth, the customer retention or the new customers, it became quite clear, if we could train more staff with the same morals, values and ethical operating attitudes, then it was feasible to open up another workshop,” Doherty said.

And this is where we return to the importance of people, because to achieve this Euro Technik has invested in its technicians so that the work is done to the highest possible standards, attracting more customers.

“Training is vital, and you can never have too much of it,” said Doherty.

“We have a huge focus on internal training, we commit to two days per month across our 13 staff.

It could be mirroring them on a process, teaching them about time management, improving diagnostic skills, or swapping staff around so they can buddy up with an expert in a particular field. We also commit to external training where opportunities present. It’s so important.”

In an industry that is struggling to retain staff, Euro Technik is bucking that trend thanks to a proactive people first, thinking-outside-of-the-

box way. Its forward thinking, almost corporate approach to looking after their employees is impressive.

“We don’t have a problem with staff retention, we haven’t lost anyone for some time, which I think says a lot,” Doherty said.

“We are actually looking for more and we are proactively implementing more and more things to retain and attract people to the business.

“We have increased training initiatives, we offer employee assistance programs like counselling, diet and fitness plans, we also arrange cooking classes. Staff can access these, and it promotes personal growth.

“I really think that this is a small price to pay. These make a big difference to staff but also their families. I want my people to be happy, energetic and excited to be working here, and these benefits are helping to achieve this.

“Paying well is also important, and I do this, but I want to offer a supportive, enjoyable work environment.”

Doherty has worked hard to ensure his businesses are presented

professionally. The workshops are immaculate, everyone wears uniforms, and the branding is on point, which is important from a customer perspective, because impressions last.

But while it’s important that his customers know that their cars are receiving the best of attention, flawless workmanship and the full dealership experience, it’s clear that Doherty gets significant satisfaction helping develop his staff.

“Seeing people grow, fulfilling their goals and ambitions, whether they be personal or professional is enjoyable,” Doherty said.

“I like building strong relationships with both my staff and customers.

For me this is the most rewarding aspect of owning a business. It’s that positive team environment where my customers benefit.”

And this says it all really. Successful auto businesses are filled with content customers that trust you to do the right thing my them. But this is not achievable if you don’t invest in, and support your staff. And this is what sets Euro Technik out from the rest. Well played.

MOTOR SHOWS:

REMEMBER THEM? Australia no longer stages an annual Motor Show.

The last event was held in Sydney in 2012. Back then the annual Show alternated between Melbourne and the Harbour City, but dwindling support by the manufacturers, improved website content (plus social coverage), and lower crowd numbers brought them to their knees.

The thing about that 2012 Show was not what car makers were there, it was more about the brands that were missing in action. Alfa Romeo, Audi, BMW, Ferrari, Lotus and Maserati were all no shows. In fact, nearly 50 per cent of the brands sold in Australia failed to commit.

But it’s not just an Australian thing, a number of premium brands didn’t attend the last Tokyo Motor Show, while huge Euro brand like VW and Volvo, not to mention key Japanese marques, skipped Paris in 2018.

And then there was the crowd, or lack of it. Only 135,000 people walked through the doors in Sydney, and if you remove the car execs, journos, dealers and other VIPs, that number is even lower. It’s a far cry from the record high crowd of 320,000 that visited the 2001 show.

The local Motor Show used to be big. Local car makers used them to showcase the new Monaro or the latest generation Falcon or Commodore. Yes there was the odd regional premiere, but the big car manufacturers

tended to save the all new models for the massive northern hemisphere Shows, like Paris, Frankfurt, Geneva, Tokyo or Detroit.

In the age before social media and dedicated websites, when prospective buyers used to get all their information off the dealership floor, Motor Shows were the perfect way to look at and touch your short list of cars in the one place. You could get brochures, speak to sales representatives and walk away armed with all the specs, features and optional extras that would help form your opinion on what to buy next. The buyer, after this, simply made contact with their preferred dealership and bought the car, without the need to visit a number of dealerships. It was perfect.

Now, you can get all the information you need from an OEM website, you can even build your perfect car.

It forced a change of focus from the manufacturers.

Car brands would spend millions of dollars on a stand at the local Motor Show. Think of that. If they did eight Motor Shows in one calendar year – and most would do all the big ones – and each one cost one to two million dollars - this would swallow up $10 to $15 million of marketing budget and they still had to create local marketing strategies that cost mega dollars. And this is being ultra conservative. Some of the more impressive stands at big international shows can cost over $10 million.

So, to invest so much and have a mere 135,000 seeing your new product represents a very low return on investment. You could spend that on a decent multimonth digital market campaign and reach millions of people.

Shows are also aimed at media. Hundreds of media descend on every show, eying new products for the first time, checking out concept cars, talking to manufacturer managing directors and executives, grabbing global headlines and covering the news. There were more reasons than one to stage a Show.

Then COVID-19 hit the world and most of the big Shows were called off. Media stopped travelling, car maker budgets were slashed or new car announcements delayed. So they had to come up with other ways to announce arrivals and generate mass publicity.

Most car makers went digital. They ran a Motor Show style launch at a small venue, with no live guests and linked the world on-line. The result? Some manufacturers saw as much, if not more, publicity generated from events of this nature compared to Motor Shows.

So what is the future of Motor Shows? Here, they’re long gone and won’t be back. However, specialty shows like Melbourne’s Motorclassica – which focuses on vintage cars – has tapped into a solid and evergrowing market. Same overseas with SEMA (Speciality Equipment Market Association) in Las Vegas, CES (Consumer Electronic Show) also in Vegas, and you could even include Goodwood (UK) – and they’re all attracting more manufacturer support each year.

While COVID-19 is still having a significant impact on any type of event globally, it’s fair to say that the pandemic has put an end to Motor Shows as we know them. Rest in peace.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO REPLACE ALL FRONT END AUXILIARY DRIVE SYSTEM COMPONENTS? The Front End Auxiliary Drive (FEAD) provides power to critical vehicle operation, comfort and safety systems.

Idlers are used to divert the belt route according to the position of the

accessories driven by the belt system, and overrunning alternator pulleys (OAP) prevent vibrational irregularities within the FEAD. • Drive Belt: the multi-ribbed belt transfers the rotational movement of the crankshaft to the components being driven • Deflection Pulleys: guide the course of the multi-ribbed belt to the auxiliary components ensuring optimum torque transmission • Tensioning Elements: mechanic or hydraulic tensioner ensures the drive belt remains at the optimum tension, preventing slippage, noise and belt vibration • Alternator Pulleys: used on the rotor shaft of the alternator to dampen all vibration in the drive belt.

Where are all the mechanics?

The realities and challenges we face attracting and retaining great staff With the COVID-19 threat receding and society returning to some form of normalcy, workshops across the country have enjoyed a resurgence in business, in many cases exceeding pre-pandemic levels.

This is welcome news for workshops, however, also brings back into focus a huge issue for the industry - attracting and retaining qualified staff.

To better understand the challenges, we need to take stock, raise the hard truths, look at the data and develop plans to tackle this issue head on.

qualified, is the single biggest issue for more than half of Australian workshops, and the data supports this. Workshops are advertising for staff, but have few applicants. Due to the slim pickings, finding a candidate with the right attitude and skills is proving hard. The resultant lack of staff has led to 30 per cent of workshops turning away customers, and this stunts business growth.

What are the challenges that have been driving these realities? The AAAA 2020/21 Workshop Employment Insights conducted by ACA Research offers some important insights about what is working and not

working in relation to staff and retention.

Let’s start with the elephant in the room. Wages. There is no denying that on the whole, mechanics are paid less than other trades. This can undoubtedly stifle interest in pursuing an automotive career before it has even begun.

Looking at our worker mix provides another clue.

Currently less than 2 per cent of automotive technicians are female. Are we only talking to 50 per cent of the population about careers in automotive?

The age of the workforce can’t

be swept under the carpet either. Across the board, 67 per cent of qualified mechanics are now aged over 50 years old.

Are we doing enough to foster the next generation into this rewarding and driven industry?

Is an automotive technician seen as an attractive career choice?

The bottom line is we aren’t getting enough apprentices into the industry, and this needs to be addressed.

Workshops are also having a hard time retaining apprentices.

For owners and managers of workshops, hiring an apprentice is a significant investment in time and resources. Having an apprentice drop out, or move elsewhere is a significant blow and disincentives workshops to continue to hire apprentices.

Addressing these issues and effecting change is tough, there is no denying that. And there is no silver bullet here.

Change needs to come from all levels. In the workshops, in our schools, at the vocational training level, with government and even more broadly in society, around cultural norms.

What are some proactive steps workshops can take? With the job market currently skewed towards being an ‘employee market’, what we are seeing from the data is that qualified mechanics are picking and choosing where they work based on the salary, the conditions and the workshop environment. The hard truth is that 61 per cent of recruited staff are moving from another workshop. Are they moving from yours?

in play. 84 per cent of leading workshops, who face fewer staffing issues, are paying for the training and upskilling of their staff, and 60 per cent of these workshops provide career progression.

Granted, career progression is not realistic for many smaller businesses, but even smaller strategies can have an impact on staff retention. Everything from paying for a social event to help team morale, providing flexible hours, mentoring, or even making improvements to the work environment itself.

It comes as no surprise that over 80 per cent of workshops feel the government should be doing more to grow the number of qualified mechanics in Australia. How the government will achieve this is complex, but needs to take into account the current pathways - from primary to secondary school, through to vocational training institutes.

Changing views around the perception of automotive being a career for men should also be actioned.

How can industry bodies like the AAAA play a role in effecting change? Its research findings are a great tool to better understand the challenges of our industry and provide insights to government.

It also needs to continue to advocate for further support in funding toward increasing vocational careers, in particular automotive technicians, and better understand why such a high percentage of apprentices are starting but not completing their qualification.

“Although as an industry we have to face some difficult truths, I remain optimistic,” Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association CEO, Stuart Charity said.

“As technology increases its role in automotive repair, I am buoyed by the fact we will soon have a mandatory data sharing law in place. This will ensure workshops are future-proofed against these advances and can continue to offer their important services that keep Australia moving.

“New technology also presents an exciting new opportunity to attract younger generations into the industry.

“Finally, the AAAA will continue its role pushing for change and supporting the industry and our members so this vibrant and rewarding career remains a job of the future.”

With the increasing interest in hybrid vehicles, the need for remanufactured hybrid batteries is going to rise over the next decade and beyond, as cars come out of warranty and batteries start to fail.

In 2021, it is estimated that over 16,000 hybrid batteries will need to be replaced in cars across Australia.

This will rise to more than 23,000 in 2024. At the moment, a faulty battery is replaced with a new one - sometimes prematurely, so a Melbourne-based company called Injectronics has implemented a program that will look after workshops, the customer and the environment.

Injectronics’ hybrid battery remanufacturing exchange project will deliver Australia’s first scalable component re-use and resource recovery program of retired battery packs from hybrid-electric vehicles.

Part of IM Group, Injectronics is Australasia’s leading supplier of quality new and remanufactured automotive electronic components, as well as the preferred repairer of electronic and mechatronic parts.

Until now, a hybrid battery was seen as a single-use part, but Injectronics’ ability to remanufacture battery packs that are faulty, slow to charge or no longer performing at an effective level has created a circular economy that will maintain battery life long after manufacturer warranties have lapsed.

The hybrid battery exchange project works in conjunction with automotive workshops. When a fault with a car’s hybrid battery is presented to a workshop, the repairer contacts Injectronics who then securely ships a remanufactured battery direct to them. Once complete, this functioning hybrid battery - which comes with an updated two-year warranty - will be made available to future customers.

“A project of this type creates a circular economy, putting to an end the single-use nature of hybrid batteries, is environmentally friendly in its approach and will save hybrid vehicle owners a considerable sum when their battery fails to work as expected,” Injectronics executive general manager Gino Ricciuti said.

Apart from the cost savings for the end user, Injectronics is setting the automotive industry – particularly independent workshops - up for success. It gives workshops access to specialist HEV-specific aftermarket

products and services by a reputable business, it offers vehicle owners, via their preferred workshop, a viable alternative to new original equipment battery packs, and enables independent general mechanics to expand their service offering to the emerging hybrid-electric vehicle markets.

Looking to export remanufactured hybrid batteries to New Zealand, in the longer term Injectronics wants to further invest in research and development, new technologies and equipment, and align with universities to find cost-effective solutions for the reuse and remanufacturing of other battery types, including lithium-ion batteries. Once available to market, it is envisaged that the cost of a remanufactured battery for the end consumer will be between 60 and 80 per cent less than a new unit – with the project offering considerable environmental advantages as well as cost savings down the line.

If you look at all the innovative safety technology that is built into new cars as they roll off production lines across the globe, we are living in an era where it’s never been safer to drive a car.

The biggest safety innovation for vehicles was the seatbelt, and Australia was the first nation in the world to make wearing seatbelts compulsory. Since we started driving cars, seatbelts have made the biggest difference in saving lives, reducing our road toll significantly since the 1970s.

Then came along airbags. This was another watershed moment for the auto industry. They had been thought about in the 1950s and started to be installed in the mid-1970s. Back then conversation was around having a seatbelt or an airbag. But car makers gradually moved to including both.

By the start of the 1980s, airbags as we know them started to become more widespread.

Whether it be seatbelts or airbags, the automotive industry refers to safety equipment of this type as passive safety. There is also a term called active safety. Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), BlindSpot Monitoring (BSM) and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), which are designed to help reduce accidents and fatalities on the road, are examples of this.

This got the attention of Victorian Premier, Daniel Andrews, who wants to reduce the number of older cars on our roads, particularly for the young, as well as older regional drivers. Why? Because their car purchase is budget driven.

“The program will aim to replace one thousand older, unsafe vehicles with safer replacements.”

“Thirty years ago, car safety meant airbags if you were lucky and a lap belt in the middle back seat,” the Premier said.

“(We’ll offer) short-term, affordable leases on newer and safer cars to help them get around safely,” added the Premier.

“Thankfully, a lot has changed since then. The vehicles produced today are light years (ahead of) my first car – a red VB Commodore.

“Older cars don’t have the safety features we rely on to keep us safe and are over-represented in our crash and fatality statistics.

“But upgrading isn’t always affordable – particularly if you’ve saved hard for your first wheels or you’re on a pension. Plenty of young people are driving cars older than they are.”

So, to get more of these demographics into a newer car incorporating the latest safety technologies, the Victorian Government will run two pilot programs to help some of the state’s youngest and oldest drivers trade in an old car for a safer model.

“We’ll provide grants to help young people in regional areas scrap their old car and buy something newer and safer,” the Premier said.

The Government is also looking to support regional Victorians aged 65 and over who are on lower incomes.

“This (program) is about getting them off the road and supporting Victorians who need it most, making things safer for everyone.”

A project of this type has been proposed in the past, in 2010 by the then Gillard-led federal government.

With $430 million put towards the initiative, they wanted to stimulate new car sales, improve safety and reduce emissions. It never got up with the monies redirected to the 2011 flood victims.

The Victorian Government pilot programs are expected to commence later this year.

It goes without saying that the more modern the car is, the safer it is. Midway through last year the Australian Bureau of Statistics released its motor vehicle census, and it gave us some interesting reading.

To January 31, 2020, according to the study, there were 19.9 million cars on our roads, increasing in numbers by 1.5 per cent from 2019 to 2020. There was an increase in registrations in all states and territories, barring the NT which shrank 0.7 per cent. Tasmania saw the highest growth of 2.6 per cent.

But it was the average age of cars on our roads that struck a chord with one state Premier. The average age of vehicles across Australia increased to 10.4 per cent. Since 2015 the age has stayed steady at 10.1 per cent.

The fact is that the older the car park, the less new cars are on the roads.

This means that there are a higher proportion of older cars being driven, and these are lacking essential safety technologies.

BOSCH – THE LEADER IN GASOLINE DIRECT INJECTION In 1951, Bosch launched gasoline direct injection and has been the technology’s leader ever since!

Bosch gasoline direct injection first launched in a two-stroke Gutbrod Superior 600 and a Goliath GP 700 at the Frankfurt auto show in 1951. With its precision fuel injection, it helped reduce the vehicle’s fuel consumption by some 20 per cent and increased its power from 23 to 28 horsepower in the Gutbrod Superior.

Increasing motorised mobility worldwide, coupled with the desire for lower fuel consumption and reduced emissions, has resulted in gasoline direct injection being regarded as a key technology with huge potential.

These concepts utilise the higher specific torque resulting from turbocharging to reduce engine displacement while maintaining power output. A relatively smaller engine displacement is sufficient to release the same amount of energy as a larger comparable engine without downsizing.

The proportion of vehicles with gasoline direct injection will continue to increase further in the future.

Gasoline Direct Injection Benefits The benefits of Gasoline Direct Injection for the vehicle owner include: • Improved responsiveness and more dynamic handling in combination with downsizing due to an increase in torque of up to 50 per cent at low engine speeds (high low-end torque) • 60-100 kW/l of specific power output due to an increase of the charge pressure in combination with reduced engine displacement • Reduced fuel consumption and fewer CO2 emissions at the same power output due to downsizing and turbocharging.

How Gasoline Direct Injection Works?

Engines with gasoline direct injection have their air-fuel mixture injected directly into the combustion chamber. Fresh air flows into the intake port through an open intake valve.

When the fuel is spraying directly into the combustion chamber by the highpressure injectors, the combustion chamber cooling is improved.

The improved cooling provides for higher engine compression and in turn, increased efficiency, which helps reduce fuel consumption and increase torque.

Fuel delivery is via the high-pressure pump, which supplies the fuel pressure in the fuel rail at the required high level of up to 350 bar.

The Transition to Downsizing Engine downsizing entails a reduction in engine displacement, which in turn reduces fuel consumption and the associated CO2 emissions.

Future Legislation Future legislation aimed at reducing exhaust particulates places new challenges on internal combustion engines.

Darwin: Australia’s top end joy As the cold months approach we start thinking of warmer destinations when it comes to holidays. Queenslanders are lucky, the humidity of summer has gone and the stunning winter months are perfection, but for those in the southern states winter is, well, fairly cold and grey.

One place that you may not have considered for your next winter solstice is Darwin – and it’s a place filled with incredible experiences.

The Northern Territory is pretty good when it comes to the marketing of its hallmark tourist destinations. Places like Ayers Rock, Katherine Gorge and Kakadu are known globally, but its capital is filled with cool things to enjoy and winter is the ideal time to take it all in.

Let’s be honest, the wet season – if you don’t like energysapping humidity – is not the best time to visit Darwin, but May to October is heaven. Overnight temps drop to the mid-20s, while daytime highs hover in the early 30s (Which is regarded as cold for the locals!).

The question is, if you booked a holiday and didn’t leave Darwin, could you fill in your time? The answer is an unequivocal yes.

Whether you like sailing and cruising, good food (Darwin is famous for its Barramundi), sightseeing, or tourist destinations, there’s plenty to do.

First up, Darwin is well known for its markets. You must, and that’s must, visit the iconic Mindil Beach sunset markets.

There, you can sample the international cuisines from over 60 stalls, there are arts and crafts, light shows, live music, street performers as well as aboriginal artwork.

Just next door is the Star City Casino, and opposite the museum and art gallery is the Darwin Ski Club. Now, we wouldn’t normally cherry pick one F&B venue over every other but this is another must-visit place. Situated right on the beach, there is simply no better place - maybe in the whole country to relax with a cold beverage as you watch the sun go down.

As far as sightseeing goes, check out Crocosaurus Cove for an up-front experience with crocodiles. If you are brave you can also submerge yourself in a cage and see them face to face.

The museum has already been mentioned, but it’s worth going for the Cyclone Tracey exhibit alone.

If you are into military history, Darwin offers a treasure that no other Australian city can boast. On February 19, 1942, Darwin became the only Australian city to ever be bombed by an enemy. In recognition of this you can visit the Darwin Military Museum and there are also guided walking tours that show the impact the Second World War had on the city.

Other than this, you can tour the Royal Flying Doctor tourist facility, visit the Darwin waterfront for a delicious meal or, depending when you visit, enjoy some world-class events.

In June, the Supercars Championship visits Hidden Valley Raceway. Other than Bathurst and Melbourne’s Formula One Grand Prix, the Darwin round is one of the series jewels in the crown. Promoted by the NT Government, the infrastructure is first class, so you can easily get to and from the track ensuring a great day out.

On July 1, the Territory enjoys Territory Day with legally purchased fireworks, and August delivers the exalted Darwin Festival. There is so much to do and see that the whole family will be kept entertained.

Other than that, when the down time calls you can relax in some of the best hotels, lie by the pool or take in the sites from the Darwin foreshore. Just watch out for the local wildlife, they can bite… hard!
