AN OUTSTANDING YEAR Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of hsy’s Evolve magazine. I’d like to take the opportunity to reflect on a fantastic year that 2019 has been for hsy, both internally and also working with our customers to grow even more in this industry.

We are very proud of our work with our customers and love getting involved with you as much as we possibly can, whether it be something as simple as offering multiple delivery runs to you each day, getting some technical training out to you throughout the year or even having a laugh or two when we drop in and say hi. 2020 will be no exception, with bigger and better things to come to keep us on the path of staying Independent Together.

In no particular order, here’s some of the highlights of 2019 for hsy: • We sponsored 59 Racing’s McLaren 720S GT3 with Melbourne driver Fraser Ross behind the wheel.

The McLaren 720S GT3 was one of the first in the world to race, and it had our brand on it!

• We brought Doug from ATE out to Australia and toured him around the country to conduct technical training with many of our customers.

• We launched the next level of our ATE Brake Centres, dubbed “ATE Platinum” – more to come on that!

• We did the Pierburg Partner Intensive Training with many of you.

• We held booths at every Capricorn Gala Trade Event.

•W e had our hsy Golf Day back in March with some very good (and also some average) hits around the course.

•W e opened two new stores, our first store in Canberra, located in Fyshwick, and our third store in Queensland, located in Geebung to better service our customers in the north.

In a world that is dominated by the attention-grabbing modern technologies of social media, television, Netflix, smart phones and more, sometimes it is nice to switch off and pick up a good book. One of the most refreshing (and not overly time consuming) books to be released recently is “The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck – A Counterintuitive Approach To Living A Good Life” by blogger and ex-dating coach Mark Manson.

Having sold over 6 million copies since its release in 2016, Manson writes that trying to be ‘positive’ all the time can actually be more detrimental to our lives and those around us, and that if we understand that life isn’t always perfect we can truly become better and happier people. Chapters with names such as “Don’t Try”, “The value of suffering”, “Failure is the way forward” and “The importance of saying no”, Manson believes that society conditions you into thinking that you have to think positively to have a happy life, and that is absolute rubbish. But don’t worry, he is here to help you through it.

Manson’s argument, backed by academic research as well as wellplaced profanities, tells us that improving our lives hinges not on our ability to make lemonade out of lemons, but learning that we sometimes need to stomach the lemons themselves.

Human beings are flawed and limited – “not everybody can be extraordinary, there are winners and losers in society, and some of it is not fair or your fault.” When we embrace our fears, uncertainties, faults and stop running from our painful truths, we can begin to find the courage, curiosity, honesty, responsibilities and forgiveness we seek.

While money may be nice, to most people caring about what you do with your life is much more important. In order to understand what is important and what to care about in your life, you must experience the good times and the bad. There are only so many things we can focus on, so we need to figure out what really matters to us.

The book has been praised in reviews by calling it “a much needed grabyou-by-the-shoulders-and-look-youin-the-eye moment of real talk”, and a “refreshing slap” to those who may need it.

TYRE STEWARDSHIP Changing a set of old or worn tyres for new ones is an every day process for most workshops, being done as quickly and efficiently as an oil change or changing wiper blades. While there are companies that take away used tyres to create room for more, most of us are unaware of what ultimately happens to them.

Believe it or not, there are over 56 million used tyres taken off of cars in Australia each year. While there are some companies that do their bit for recycling and the environment, only 10% of the 56 million are currently recycled locally into other products or re-used. Nearly 30% are exported to other parts of the globe for reuse, processing or consumed as a tyre derived fuel.

The rest - equating to over 60% or 36 million - are put into landfill, stockpiled or illegally dumped.

HSY RACING & FRASER ROSS WRAP UP A MEMORABLE 2019 An epic year of racing for Fraser Ross and team #59Racing in the McLaren 720S GT3 came to a conclusion on the 10th November 2019 for the last round of the Australian GT Championship at Sandown Raceway in Melbourne. The year highlighted by Fraser Ross winning the first ever race for the McLaren 720S GT3 at the Australian Grand Prix in March, two lap records at Sandown & Gold Coast. 3 Poles in a row adding to a total of 6 poles, 2 wins and 8 podiums.

After a stunning performance at last round’s Gold Coast street circuit, where Fraser secured pole position and a P3 finish for Race 1, then going on to set a new track record (his second for the 2019 season) and securing the outright win in Race 2, Fraser and the #59Racing team were pumped and very much looking forward to the final of the 2019 series and the promise of an epic battle.

“After such a fantastic last round, I was super excited to be back at Sandown, the heart of Australian GT Racing. There’s such history here, I love the track, we’ve had great success here and the McLaren 720S GT3 is absolutely brilliant around this circuit. The last time we were here in Round 5, I set a new lap record so I was stoked to be back!” said Fraser.

The weekend started out on a high with Fraser posting a solid qualifying performance on Friday to deliver pole position for the team. “The #59Racing team have been working super hard in the lead up to this round and we were all excited to see what we can achieve and cap off what has been an epic year with the McLaren 720S GT3 and McLaren Customer Racing” said Fraser.

In cold and damp conditions, Race #1 got underway just after 4pm local time on Friday. After a few bits of bad luck and hard racing, Fraser dropped a couple of placings but hung on to 4th place in the McLaren 720S GT3.

“It was a tough race, credit to the other drivers, we did our best but just missed out on a podium. The car was

feeling really good though, even in the wet, it handles beautifully” said Fraser.

Early Saturday morning saw Race #2 set off with a rolling start, positions set by placings from Race #1, meaning Fraser started in 4th on the second row.

With the sun finally shining through after an early rain shower, Fraser and team #59Racing decided to go out on slicks to take advantage of the drying track. “The track dries up fast out there so it was a no brainer to go with slicks.” explained Fraser.

“I was looking to move up early on, and got through to third place at turn 11, then quickly moved up into second a couple of turns later. I pushed ahead to get some clear air and managed to post a few fastest laps before heading into the pits and handing over to my co-driver Ryan Simpson. Ryan did a fantastic job, also pushed hard and did a great job to secure second place at the end of race two” said Fraser.

Frustratingly, team #59Racing then had an issue with the fire-bomb inside the car just before commencement of the final race which couldn’t be resolved in time, meaning they had to retire and post a DNF for Race #3.

“I was obviously disappointed to finish the season this way, for the whole team as well as for the sponsors.

But sometimes these things happen in racing, so we’ll go away and do a lot of work in the off season to come back bigger, better and as a stronger team next year.”

Fraser said.

Fraser was reasonably pleased with his overall Championship placing of 6th position for the 2019 season.

Just one years worth of used tyres can fill up Sydney Harbour. The TPSS is doing their bit to change that.

But what is clear is that all large manufacturers are focusing on it. Although Germany is still considered a leading country in developing electric cars, if you look at the international market, you will see that electromobility is developing rapidly around the world. By the end of 2018, the number of electric vehicles around the world had risen to 5.6 million. This equates to an increase of 64 percent compared with the previous year. In Norway, electric vehicles reached a staggering market share of 49 percent in 2018.

More safety with assistance systems But the industry is working on it. Until that day comes, existing assistance systems are being honed to make them even safer.

For example, in future, vehicle mirrors will be replaced with cameras and monitors in some vehicles. They will expand the driver’s field of view and will also be a lot more intelligent. of driver assistance systems, information from the camera, radar and ultrasound systems are being combined using sensor fusion.

Networked driving Just like your smartphone, your vehicle will always be linked to the outside world in the future. This will avoid traffic jams, for example, because vehicles can adapt the traffic light controls to the volume of traffic. This means that “smart driving” will become the standard in the future. Your car will also be networked with other vehicles and communicate with the cloud or passengers on the roadside as well as with infrastructure.

Individualisation of vehicles Cars are becoming more and more unique. New vehicle owners can individually configure more and more equipment features and details, and can create their dream car. Among other things, this includes personalised, dynamic light features for the vehicle interior — something which HELLA is working on as well.

For those who live in or have visited South Melbourne, an inner city suburb of Melbourne and located only a couple of kilometres from the CBD would know just how busy and urban it is. How long have you been a Service Advisor?

I’ve been with Cox Auto for about 5 years now, but about 20 years experience in total working with cars and with people.

At the head of the family business is owner Ashley Cox, who is active in the day to day running of the business as well as in the local community of South Melbourne.

Ashley believes in striving for the best in every possible detail, which is why a customer’s first impression as they walk in is a contemporary and modern designed building and reception area, with a comfortable waiting area offering complimentary coffee and refreshments. The business fits right in with its surroundings and location, providing its customers with the premium feel that is expected of inner city Melbourne.

It isn’t just how the business presents itself that is evident in Ashley’s mission for striving for the best – the workshop itself is fitted out with all of the latest tooling,

They have built very strong relationships with individuals and families over the time they have been in business, and this is due to understanding their needs at a deeper level than what a dealership could provide. Cox Auto also include a complimentary car wash after each service for all cars, have a large loan car fleet of European Cars and also run a shuttle bus service into the Melbourne CBD upon request so customers can get on with their usual schedule while their car is being worked on. You can’t ask for anything more than that!

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I think the real trick with being a Service Advisor is that its less about understanding the work yourself, but rather helping the customer understand what work is required on their car. It’s also a challenge where I feel there is something new every day.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

When we go over and above for a customer, for example if a customer breaks down and we work hard to get the car turned around and back to them as soon as possible, that’s for me the most rewarding part.

What do you think customers like the most about Cox Auto?

The level of service that they get. We are similar to a dealer but have the benefit of being a smaller and family run business, so we get to spend more time with a customer and make them feel like they aren’t just a number.

ATE BRAKES - OVER A CENTURY OF DEVELOPMENT Brake technology is one of the many things we have in cars that we take for granted. It’s the pedal in the middle, for those unsure of which one we’re talking about.

Braking itself goes back, in essence, to the days when a person on a cart would yell “whoa” to the horse or the ox or whichever animal was being used. Then came the simple but effective lever and block system.

Applied via, as a rule, by the simple action of lifting a lever’s handle and thereby pressing a wooden block against a metal shod wooden wheel, this crude system worked well enough on carts and the very first “horseless carriages” as speeds were generally no more than twenty kilometres per hour.

Then wheel technology changed, with rubber being developed to a process and style to be used on wooden, then steel wheels. The wooden block system was rendered obsolete, as a result.

However, a similar system was developed which used steel cables.

It’s said that Gottlieb Daimler invented a drum mechanism which would be slowed in rotation by cables. This was in 1899, with 1901 seeing another version, thanks to Wilhelm Maybach utilising a lever operating steel cables that again would be wrapped around a drum.

Further development would see these externally mounted drums moved inside the chassis, minimising exposure and becoming structurally stronger. Then a further development of the friction based process was developed by Malcolm Loughead.

This process involved a hydraulic pressure system which would press what have become known as shoes to the insides of the drum.

Loughead, by the way, would later change the spelling of his surname slightly to Lockheed and become famous in the aviation industry.

Oddly enough, the system used most commonly today, that of a pad being pressed against a disc, didn’t become popular until the 1950s even though it was patented in the latter years of the 1890s. Most of the major manufacturers would implement disc brakes by the close of the 1960s.

Electronics and computers in cars became more common which lead to the development and implementation of ABS. Anti-lock Braking Systems would see the calipers press and release on the discs, and it’s the release that’s important here. By, literally, not locking up the rotation of the discs and therefore the wheels, a driver could still control the steering and hopefully steer the car away from a potential impact. Initially the ABS would be applied to the front wheels, before being refined to apply to all four corners in a pair, then independently.

pads has seen a self-adjusting system, where the pad, as it wears, is kept at the same operating distance from the disc surface. The pads themselves have changed from an asbestos blend to more environmentally friendly materials, with some high end systems using a ceramic compound instead of steel for the discs.

Autonomous Emergency Braking is possibly the final step in the development of braking until full remote computer control . This utilises a program that has sensors sweeping the road ahead, and if an object such as another car, or a pedestrian, is detected, and the computers have no external (human) intervention, will apply the brakes automatically.

CHANGING OF THE G UA R D Highway Patrol Moves To Euro The sight of a Highway Patrol vehicle when you’re driving will inevitably make you nervous, even if you are a contentious driver and are not doing anything wrong. With the sheer number of roads throughout Australia and more motorists occupying them each and every day, it is hard to deny that the roads aren’t in need of the Highway Patrol division. According to the NSW Police Force, the Traffic & Highway Patrol Command is responsible and accountable for “the development and dissemination of advice on all matters relating to traffic policy, development, enforcement, education and road trauma”, essentially they are the Road Police ensuring that we stick to the speed limits, share the road with sober drivers and do the heavy lifting in the unfortunate incident of a road collision.

The Highway Patrol officers are mostly known for the cars they drive. Depending on how long you have been on Australian roads for, you may remember a Highway Patrol vehicle a fairly standard looking Police vehicle with a single rotating blue light affixed to its roof.

If you’ve been on the roads for a few less years, you may know of them as brightly coloured large sedans with plenty of reflective sign writing and incredibly bright flashing lights. Regardless, up until late last year you would always remember them as an Australian built car no matter which part of Australia you reside in.

The Police Force around Australia has relied on Australian built cars to get around for as long as we were manufacturing in this country.

However, the Highway Patrol cars that we know really started to come to form with the cars known as “Candy Cars” – XA GT Ford Falcons with brightly coloured stickers from the early 1970s started roaming the streets with the design meant to provide greater visibility of Police while on the streets. The GT Falcons were picked due to the performance of its engine, stability of its suspension and braking forces allowing the Police members to keep up with any situation thrown at them. This inevitably started a trend for Highway Patrol cars, and as time passed the Highway Patrol cars stayed as high performance Australian sedans such as Holden Commodore SS’s

and Ford Falcon XR6 Turbo / XR8’s in brightly coloured paint jobs and covered in reflective stickers. As vehicle technology got better for both performance and safety, the Government ensured that the Police members received the best possible equipment to keep them out of danger.

As we are sure you are aware, at the end of 2017 all Australian vehicle manufacturing had come to an end and now that the manufacturing of cars has ceased in this country, our government agencies have had to look to other markets worldwide to source their vehicles – including their now performance and safety oriented Highway Patrol cars. After rigorous testing for quite a number of years and with many different

vehicles, many states have now settled with the luxury European brands BMW and Mercedes-Benz for the majority of their Highway Patrol cars - much to the surprise of the Australian public. Both brands have been synonymous for many years in Australia as upmarket and luxury brands, and with starting prices above $100,000 for the mainstream BMW 530d and Mercedes-Benz E350d it raised a few taxpayer eyebrows.

When looking for a suitable Highway Patrol vehicle to replace the Commodore and Falcon, the Government turned to other parts of the globe with similar land sizes and requirements as Australia for inspiration. NSW’s Assistant Commissioner Michael Corboy

says that safety was a key priority for police when searching for new cars. At the launch of their BMW 530d fleet, he said “The safety of our police officers and the community they serve is our top priority, and these vehicles demonstrated the safety levels meeting our requirements. Equally as important, the platform of the vehicles supports the state of the art technology that is key to the government’s focus on reducing the incidents of road trauma across New South Wales.”

So whilst safety and technology is an important factor for choosing a new police fleet, how can the purchase prices be justified to the every day tax payer? The key lies within globalisation.

Most European countries have been using BMW and Mercedes-Benz product for police duties – including their equivalent of Highway Patrol – for many years. These German vehicle marques have models that are specifically built from scratch to be police vehicles, and as such remove many standard luxury items that are not required by police officers to conduct their duties. This may include real leather interiors, high end sound systems, a sunroof, digital gauge clusters, metallic paint, larger wheels, heated seats, mobile app integration and more. It is worth noting that while the Australian-

built police vehicles did have a “Police Package” for some models, this usually involved adding more equipment into a vehicle rather than stripping it out at the production line like the German vehicles.

The Australian government divisions, working through the local Australian arms of BMW and Mercedes-Benz managed to bypass the standard Australian luxury specifications for their vehicles and secure the globalised police models that are in use throughout Europe and the United Kingdom, bringing the purchase price of these models – which are far more superior in safety and technology – to a similar purchase price as the Australian built models. By the time the vehicles are then homologised with the standard police technology such as number plate scanners, Australian specification lights and sirens, radio and back-to-base computer systems, the cost to the taxpayer is comparable to the old Australian built vehicles.

It is then worth noting running costs - particularly with fuel. The BMW 530d uses a claimed 4.7L/100km on combined cycle, which is almost half of the fuel costs of the outgoing VF Holden Commodore V6 at 9.1L/100km and V8 at 12.9L/100km.

With Highway Patrol cars on the road constantly, these savings will add up pretty quickly over the standard vehicle life cycle.

We will continue to see European vehicles being used and tested for police duties, with some also on consignment from BMW such as the new BMW M5 Competition and also from Mercedes-Benz such as the Mercedes-AMG GLE63s Coupe – which are not actually purchased by the government for duties.

As we look back on the “Candy Cars” and Australian built police cars it is hard not to feel a sense of pride, after all Australian built cars carried our police officers for decade after decade. But as the Australian car parc changes and more Australians drive European cars, we can rest easy knowing that our police officers are driving safe, reliable and comparatively affordable European cars too.

or who wanted to make a statement by driving electric. The electric car was still a niche market and not something taken overly serious by those who are enthusiastic about their driving.

That is, until Porsche entered the electric car space in August of this year by announcing their first fully electric sports car – the Porsche Taycan. While this is an interesting and exciting vehicle to enter the electric car arena, is it worthy of wearing the Porsche badge? After all, to car enthusiasts Porsche is known for building cars that excite those who drive them including arguably the all-time best driver’s car, the Porsche 911. So will the Taycan be the breath of fresh air that car enthusiasts are after in an electric car, or does internal combustion with the 911 still win?

Let’s start with the performance, comparing the top models of each – the Taycan Turbo S and the 911 GT3RS. The Taycan Turbo S delivers 560kW and 1,050Nm of torque on “Overboost Power”, designed to

between charges to consider as a proper car. Those who like to drive also fear the electric car is the death of driving, especially if you lose engine noise and the performance that internal combustion gives for silent driving and unengaging driving characteristics.

Then in 2012, Tesla release the first electric car that resembles a normal car – the Model S – with traditional car styling, practical seating and

plenty of boot space. They also release their ‘P85D’ model that gives insane amounts of acceleration (0-100 in 3.1 seconds) and All-WheelDrive. All of a sudden, the electric car and the future of automobiles seems a little less bleak.

Whilst Tesla have been quite successful around the world, including in Australia, it still seemed like the brand of car to buy for those who are environmentally conscious

The GT3RS gives you an impressive 383kW of power and 470Nm from its naturally aspirated 4-litre rear mounted 6 cylinder engine. 0-100km/h in the Taycan Turbo S is a blisteringly quick 2.8 seconds, with the GT3RS achieving triple figures in 3.2 seconds. That is certainly a positive to electric driving especially when there is a performance bias – all of the motor’s torque is achieved instantly so the brutality of the acceleration and torque is unlike any other experience. The performance category is clearly won by the Taycan.

If you are a driver who doesn’t believe that driving is solely about 0-100km/h times or outright acceleration, you may be interested to see how the two compare in the handling department. The 911 has continually set the benchmark of how a sportscar should handle through the generations, and even with modern conveniences such as traction and stability controls

on-board they really only work to overcome an inherently flawed engine placement in the 911. The 911 will seemingly always get through a corner even if you are not overly confident in the sweeping bends and manage to overcook it. The Taycan Turbo S on the other hand uses its electronics and chassis control to keep its huge mass of weight (mainly thanks to the batteries) in check as you corner. The suspension is firm however does not crash sway on uneven roads, and squats and pivots from one corner to the next using its weight as an asset. You could almost say that it is the best handling electric car on the planet, but it still does not compare to how a 911 corners.

For those who have been lucky enough to experience being in a Porsche, you will know that not all of the experience is about how they drive. By demanding large sums of money for an elite car, there is always an element of refinement and luxury that is expected by those who own them. The 911 GT3RS is no exception, and even

though it is essentially more of a track car that you drive on the road, it is filled with premium leather with accented stitching on the seats, trim and dashboard along with plenty of Alcantara finishes. BOSE Surround Sound systems provide a premium audio experience and seamlessly integrates with the “Porsche Communication Management” infotainment screen with all of the latest technologies you would expect in a luxury car. The Taycan Turbo S takes a step further in the interior space, with the “Porsche Advanced Cockpit” providing up to 4 digital displays running across the dashboard and in front of the passenger. You can option a Panoramic fixed glass sunroof to provide an open and airy feeling inside the cabin, above and beyond the standard lightweight aluminium roof. The Taycan body is also in a 4 door, 4 seat configuration with an added focus on rear passenger comfort including being able to individually set the climate control for each seat in the car. While it is difficult to compare them both on luxury and refinement, both cars sit at the top of their game and do not disappoint.

The inherent topic of conversation when it comes to an electric car is range; especially in Australia where we

need to cover long distances from time to time. The 911 GT3RS being petrol powered will never struggle to find a service station to spend a couple of minutes at before moving down the road again. Its 64L tank is very generous considering its smaller sports car dimensions, and will comfortably achieve 500km to a tank when cruising, but expect significantly less when using the car as intended or sitting in traffic. What is interesting about an electric vehicle is that it actually achieves a longer range when sitting with traffic. This is due to “brake energy regeneration” technology that actually collects extra charge from the energy generated by slowing down and braking. Porsche’s listed range for city driving for the Taycan Turbo S is 433 – 473km to a charge, with 340km to a charge when driving long distance. How long does it take to charge you ask? 22.5 minutes from a fast charger, 93 minutes from a home-installed fast charger or 9 hours (yes, hours) from a standard household power point. If you are using the Taycan as a daily driver where your commute is only a couple of hundred kilometres per day maximum, this wouldn’t be a problem. But if you plan on doing long distance trips with the Taycan you best plan well in

While the Taycan is still a new product and will not reach Australian dealerships until the first half of 2020, the GT3RS has been on the market for a while now with plenty of success in our car-obsessed country. The Taycan Turbo S is expected to be priced below the larger Porsche Panamera (starting at $215,000) which aligns perfectly with the Taycan Turbo S’s main competition – the Tesla Model S P100D. List price on the 911 GT3RS is $326,400 (before on-roads and options) with many privately owned and low mileage cars selling into the $400,000+ range

depending on options. This puts quite a price difference between the two – but as previously mentioned you are not usually purchasing a Porsche to save money. But it does open the door to something left of field – you could own the new generation and technology with a Porsche Taycan Turbo S as well as a raw petrol-powered performance car like a new Porsche Cayman for the same money as the 911 GT3RS. There is definitely an overall argument for each of the two cars regardless of which side you sway to. Both are built with the driver in mind by a brand who has a long history in building special cars, which shows us that the future of mobility is looking less bleak even as we move towards electrification. It seems that the automotive manufacturers who have always focused on the driver will continue to do so regardless of how their vehicles are powered. Whether you see internal combustion engines as an old and dying technology or still the superior way to go fast, you can rest easy knowing that life isn’t going to be boring in years to come.

The system has approximately 150 milliseconds to make the decision to deploy the airbag and fill it – roughly the amount of time it takes a person to blink.

The vehicle’s sensors first have to identify a potential impact quickly and accurately, which is possible with connected cameras, radar and lidar. Algorithms within the system software then decide whether or not a collision is unavoidable and the deployment of the airbag is both possible and beneficial.

If these decisions are all affirmative, the system ignites the inflators to fill the airbag. The airbag, which has a capacity of between 280 and 400 litres (five to eight times the volume of a driver airbag) depending on the vehicle, then expands upwards from the side sill to form an additional crumple zone in the door area.

HIGHBALL CARS AND COFFEE

The Cars and Coffee style of car show is fast becoming a favourite way to catch up with fellow car lovers around Australia, with most events happening early in the morning on a weekend and finishing with plenty of time to enjoy your day off. Plus, any excuse to get a barista made coffee is a good excuse!

One of the most prominent events in the 2019 calendar for many Victorian-based car enthusiasts has been the newly formed Highball Cars and Coffee. Organised by the Highball Motor Club (HMC) and in collaboration with Bosch Australia, the first Highball Cars and Coffee was hosted at Bosch Head Office in June 2019.

The Highball Motor Club calls itself a “vehicle agnostic automotive enthusiast group” - essentially meaning that regardless of what make, model, year made, body type or vehicle value, any car is welcome at HMC and will be treated with equal enthusiasm to all other cars.

This philosophy is reflected through their Cars and Coffee events, and while opening up an event to any car can be a potential recipe for disaster when trying to organise a car show, it works incredibly well for HMC with all three events to-date being very successful in drawing a large variety of vehicles and car enthusiasts.

“After the Wilson Cars and Coffee finished up in February 2019, there was a bit of a gap for our style of cars and coffee event in Melbourne.

Melbourne has one of the best car cultures in the world in my opinion” says Jonathan Peart - Highball Motor Club member and one of the many organisers for the event. “Our first event, Cars and Coffee 01, was right in Melbourne’s winter with temperatures below freezing and the whole event was covered in fog.

We saw 250 cars that day which really was a dream come true for us.

Since then we saw 350 cars at Cars and Coffee 02 in August and 430 cars at Cars and Coffee 03 in early October. We believe that everyone that attends appreciates the inclusive nature and ‘Grandstand’ atmosphere as cars arrive and park up. We are also grateful for Bosch Australia donating $2 for every coffee sold at the event, which gives Highball Cars and Coffee the opportunity to give back.”

To put the Highball Cars and Coffee variety into perspective, the previous events have seen the attendance of multiple variations of Honda NSXs (original and new shapes), De Tomasto Panteras including multiple standard and GTS models, classic and modern BMWs including beautiful examples of E9s through

to M2 Competitions, many Mazda MX-5s from original examples to wide-body builds, arguably every type of Porsche 911 from classic air cooled through to the latest track oriented GT3RSs, Mercedes-Benz varieties from Pagoda SLs through to S-Classes and modern AMG’s, exotic supercars of all shapes and sizes from Testarossas through to current McLaren generation and Lamborghini stables, as well as many interesting vehicles with stories to tell and JDM quirky cars not usually seen on Australian roads. The list is seemingly endless.

Coffee is just as important as the cars at these events, with the coffee at Highball Cars and Coffee supplied by renowned Melbourne based coffee roasters ST. ALi since their second event. ST. ALi have been around cars for many years, which includes their joint venture with Mercedes-Benz running the Mercedes me store and cafe in Melbourne. Many of their baristas are car enthusiasts who hope to enter cars in the future too.

Highball Motor Club itself was formed in 2015 with an inaugural ‘Highball Rally’ through country Victoria, as an opportunity for likeminded individuals to meet and enjoy the company of others in a motoring environment. The Highball Rally was also an occasion to highlight the

significant issue of men’s mental health; a philosophy that has always been close to HMC. The success of the first rally lead organisers to frequently plan new events ever since, including annual road-trips, auto show excursions, club dinner functions and other Cars and Coffee runs. Through word-of-mouth the club events grew in size and member numbers increased.

While they have seen expansion, the original vision for the club has remained; providing a close knit relaxed environment of camaraderie for like-minded people of any age, background and gender, to mix and be able to spend time with each other sharing in a common passion of cars and all things motoring related. Jonathan Peart says that they welcome those interested in being a part of the club to attend a few Highball events and meet the existing members before requesting a membership. The club is a tight-knit group to ensure their foundational philosophy is kept.

Events happen every 6-8 weeks.

The Perfectly Keyless system from Bosch turns the smartphone into a car key A stress-free, keyless journey Perfectly Keyless is a digital car key. Drivers download an app onto their smartphones, and connect their cars to the app. Once they have done this, the smartphone generates a one-off security key that fits their respective vehicle’s digital lock. Perfectly Keyless uses a wireless connection to the on-board sensors to measure how far away the smartphone is, and to identify the security key. Once the distance between driver and vehicle is less than two meters, the car door is unlocked. Hunting for the car key is no longer necessary. As soon as the vehicle has been unlocked, any predetermined individual settings, such as those for the rearview mirror and seat position, are activated. And if Perfectly Keyless detects that the smartphone is in the vehicle, a touch of the startstop button is enough to start the engine. When the driver gets out of the car at the end of the journey, the system continues to keep a virtual eye on the smartphone. Once driver

and phone have moved more than two meters away from the car, it is automatically locked securely. The system sends an acknowledgment to the driver’s smartphone.

With conventional keyless entry systems, the car key still needs to be carried in a jacket or suit pocket, for example. To open the door and start the engine, it communicates with the car using a radio signal in the low frequency (LF) or ultra high frequency (UHF) range. It can take less than five seconds for a hacker to compromise a standard keyless vehicle entry system with a process known as a relay station attack.

In the race against thieves, the automotive industry is constantly refining existing systems.

The Bosch Perfectly Keyless system is the key to preventing digital car theft. Every smartphone contains tiny microchips to manage communication via Bluetooth, and these play a key role in the Bosch

solution. Together with sensors installed in the vehicle and a special control unit, they form a system that opens the door only for the smartphone containing the virtual key that fits in the Perfectly Keyless system’s digital lock. The system blocks signals from other smartphones or from electronic devices that manipulate the radio transmission.

Longer service life

If the smartphone is lost, and the app with it, the digital key can be deactivated online. This blocks access to the vehicle, both for authorized persons and third parties. A new smartphone can be connected with the vehicle at any time, and a new unique security key generated. In the interim period, the conventional vehicle key will work as usual.

Car sharing made simple Vehicle owners can also use an app to give other drivers permission to use their vehicles. In a secure process that is protected against unauthorized access, an additional virtual key will then be sent via the cloud to other smartphones. This will allow the providers of carsharing services and the operators of vehicle fleets to manage access and keys flexibly.

With Perfectly Keyless, Bosch is thus doing something that no other keyless entry system has done before, namely offering both convenience and security. The new smartphone-based key can be used in cars, entire car-sharing fleets, and commercial vehicles.

Set on southern Italy’s Amalfi Coast is the beachside town of Positano; a vertical town set upon hills that lead down to the stunning coastal waters below. Visitors of Positano uniquely explore the town through steep flights of steps and along narrow alleyways instead of traditional roads and footpaths.

This picture-perfect town is a dramatic panorama of colours especially when seen from the sea, with colours including green, white, pink and yellow buildings set upon the silvery grey pebble beaches and the rich blue of the sea.

It is believed that the town - of which was initially developed around a Benedictine abbey - was founded in the 9th Century and named after Poseidon, God of the Sea. It grew considerably in size since it was founded but has had terrible luck, including

a pillaging by Pisa in 1268 in which it increased its defences to include steep narrow roads, massive fortified walls, and allimportant watch towers. In 1343 the town was destroyed by a significant tsunami, and in the 15th century it was the victim of continual attacks by Ottoman pirates. During the 18th century, things were looking up when Positano enjoyed prosperity as a major port and trading hub. In the mid 20th century Positano became an extremely popular tourist destination to those in the know, with its popularity often linked to John Steinbeck’s essay in Harper’s Bazaar of May, 1953: “Positano bites deep”, Steinbeck wrote. “It is a dream place that isn’t quite real when you are there and becomes beckoningly real after you have gone.”

Thanks to its position, Positano’s climate is very mild and of the Mediterranean type; perfect for tourists who wish to enjoy the beach for extended stays. The winters are very warm with minimum temperatures that never drop below 6 degrees. The summers are long, warm and sunny, with the heat fanned by the sea breeze.

For those who wish to spend time by the water, Spiaggia Grande is Positano’s main beach, spanning for over 300 metres long. It is, in fact, one of the largest beaches on the whole Amalfi Coast and also one of the most glamorous, attracting a fashionable crowd of tourists, artists, actors and celebrities.

There are also many other beaches nearby such as Fornillo, La Porta, Fiumicello, Arienzo, San Pietro, Laurito and Remmese,

some of which can also be reached by sea.

If dining, shopping and culture is more your thing, Positano’s laneways are filled with intimate cafes and authentic Italian cuisine restaurants where the owners pride themselves on giving proper Italian hospitality. You will also find boutique jewellery, linen, ceramic and high-end brand name shops – be careful though, it is easy to spend your whole budget just in one shop!

With Positano being just over an hour’s drive from the large metropolitan city of Naples and an even shorter ride to the historic city of Pompeii, Positano is a must-visit and must-stay town when you’re in Italy.

150 AIR MASS SENSORS FOR 170 MILLION VEHICLES In the aftermarket sector, MS Motorservice International GmbH supplies air mass sensors which, thanks to their sophisticated design, can be replaced very easily and quickly - the plug-in probe and flow pipe are screwed to one another and can thus be dismantled. In addition, they have been developed to allow use in a large number of different vehicle models.

If an engine is to operate economically and with low emissions, the air taken in and the injected fuel quantity have to be precisely coordinated with one another. This is the job of an air mass sensor. However, if the air mass sensor is soiled or defective, it can supply incorrect input signals to the engine control unit, increasing fuel consumption and exhaust emissions - replacement is then unavoidable. There are various possible consequences of this: misfires, black smoke, retarded acceleration, idling problems including stalling, and increased engine wear due to oil dilution caused by an excessively rich mixture.

Reliable and precise To guarantee an exceptionally fast and high-precision measurement, modern air mass sensors from Motorservice operate on the hot-film principle. The hot-film sensor is heated to a constant temperature of around 120 - 180°C above ambient temperature. The air cools the hot-film sensor as it flows in.

then adjusts the heating current so that it is proportional to the air mass and - depending on the version - is transmitted to the engine control unit as a voltage or frequently modulated squarewave signal. Two separate measuring sensors also enable pulsation and return flows that can falsify a measurement to be detected.

Smart mounting Manufacturers generally weld built-in air mass sensors in the flow pipe. Therefore, the two components have to be replaced together in the event of a possible malfunction. This is not the case with some of the models from Motorservice. Here, the plug-in probe is screwed into the flow pipe, which has a manufacturer-specific design.

This enables it to be replaced separately. With special tools for replacement of air mass sensors, Motorservice also offers a practical solution for the aftermarket sector. The plug-in probes are also available individually. This saves money and valuable resources.
