fixed-price contract for launch services, to deliver the Space Test Program-3 (STP-3) satellite to its intended orbit. Classroom Calhoun Announces Summer Semester Enrollment Increase Decatur, AL -- Dr. Jim Klauber, president of Calhoun Community College, has announced that the college’s 2017 summer semester enrollment has surpassed total enrollment for the 2016 summer semester. This summer’s enrollment of 6,146 students surpasses the 2016 enrollment of 5,962, an increase of just over 3%. Of the students taking classes at Calhoun this summer, 1,192 are enrolled in day and evening classes at the Decatur campus; 1,445 are taking day, evening and weekend classes at the college’s Huntsville/Cummings Research Park campus; 3,340 students are taking classes on-line; and 168 are enrolled in the college’s program at Limestone Correctional Facility. According to the College’s Admissions Office, the most significant increases are in online Distance Education courses, more than 11% over last year and in the College’s transient student population, up more than 7% this year.
Commenting on the increase, Klauber, said, “While our enrollment increase this summer may seem slight, we are extremely pleased to see this uptick in our numbers, particularly in light of the fact that so many colleges and universities across the state and nation have seen a continuous decline in enrollment.” “Based on feedback from students, we made a few changes in scheduling options this summer, which we feel definitely paid off,” Klauber added. “We offered a number of delayed-start classes to accommodate the schedules of our recent high school graduates and transient students and developed a targeted advertising campaign to reach these populations. We feel that based on our numbers this summer, these efforts have been successful in helping us to realize the increase we have experienced.” “We are currently in the midst of registration for our 2017 fall semester, and are hopeful that the enrollment increase we saw this summer is an indication of what we’ll see with our fall numbers,” continued Klauber. HudsonAlpha awarded $2 million to study psychiatric disease HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology has been awarded a two-year, $2 million grant by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) to research how transcription factors—key proteins that regulate the expression of genes—function in the brain. An important emphasis will be in understanding how these proteins are related to bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and major depressive disorder. HudsonAlpha President and Science Director, Richard M. Myers, PhD, and Faculty Investigator Greg Cooper, PhD, are leading the project, and are collaborating with researchers at the University of California at Irvine and the University of Michigan in this work. “We know that psychiatric disease is very complicated, with both genetic and environmental factors playing significant roles,” said Myers. “We’ve seen in other projects that people who suffer from these disorders have different transcription factor activity in the brain, and we want to use that information to identify whether these proteins could contribute to the risk of psychiatric disease.”

They regulate when the DNA sequences adjacent to genes are used to generate RNA on the way to making a protein. The HudsonAlpha project has two major components to research transcription factors in the brain. First, researchers will apply previously developed technologies to map where transcription factors bind to DNA in different regions across the brain. Then, HudsonAlpha scientists can use these data to analyze how transcription factor activity may be different between individual people as well as how such activity may vary between different regions of the brain in any one individual. “Ultimately, we hope the data from this transcription factor analysis will allow us to understand basic molecular functions in human brains and eventually to better understand the differences between people with and without psychiatric disease,” said Cooper. “These data may point to genes or pathways with diagnostic, prognostic or therapeutic value.” HudsonAlpha is a nonprofit institute dedicated to innovating in the field of genomic technology and sciences across a spectrum of biological challenges. Innovative Plastics Announces Expansion Innovative Plastics, one of the premier custom injection molders in the Southeast, is expanding their manufacturing facility in Madison, Alabama. Expansion includes 14,000 square feet of high bay manufacturing space and a 1,600 square feet employee break and training area, and employee growth. Innovative’s new footprint now stands at more than 40,000-square-feet of space for manufacturing custom plastic products. The new addition will allow Innovative to increase production capacity by 35%, offering machine sizes ranging from 85 to 825 tons. Innovative anticipates increasing employment by 15% over the next 12 months. Currently, Innovative operates 20 injection molding machines and employs 60 people. Back in 1999, with only four injection mold machines, Innovative Plastics was purchased by Huntsville based, T-H Marine Supplies as a captive molder of recreational boating components. Innovative was relocated from Huntsville to Madison in 2002 with the goal of expanding its customer base and capacity. Since 2008, Innovative has grown more than 150% in annual sales and has diversified its customer base to
include medical equipment, electronics, hunting, mining, fire protection and various consumer goods. “We are very pleased to announce the expansion of our Innovative Plastics subsidiary. The Huntsville area was missing a truly solid, mid-scale injection molding company for many years. We had to buy one and grow the business to provide the

TINMAR Celebrates 25 Years of Support in the Defense and Aerospace TINMAR is celebrating its Silver Anniversary of support to the American “War Fighter”. Headquartered in Huntsville, and under the leadership of Tina Everett McElwee, President, CEO and Owner, TINMAR is engaged in CNC Machining and Metal Fabrication. TINMAR, Inc., a Native American, Woman Owned, Small Business. McElwee is a descendant and registered member of the Echota Cherokee Tribe of Alabama. McElwee was born and raised in the Tennessee Valley. She began working in her father’s machine shop, General Products, at the age of 16 and learned the business from the ground up. After her father sold his business, McElwee started her own machine shop, TINMAR, Inc., in January 1992. TINMAR began with three employees, a couple manual mills and one CNC milling machine in a small rented 3000 SF facility in Madison County. The first job that TINMAR received was a commercial purchase order for $200. From that $200 purchase order, McElwee has developed and expanded the business to a 58,000 square foot, owned facility, located in Huntsville’s Industrial Park. Calhoun’s Bass Fishing Team Finished the Season Ranked 11th in the Nation by Cabela’s School of the Year The Calhoun Community College Bass Fishing team finished the 2016-17 season ranked 11th in the nation by The Association of Collegiate Anglers (ACA), who manages the multifaceted Cabela’s School of the Year rankings that is presented annually by the Abu Garcia program. “Calhoun was the highest ranked two-year school in the national rankings among two and four year colleges and universities,” commented Meg Graham, Bass Fishing Team sponsor. “This ranking is full-proof that our bass fishing-team continues to compete stronger and stronger at each competition,” Graham added. Denver Saterlee and Zane Loveday, members of Calhoun’s Bass fishing team, qualified to compete at the B.A.S.S. (Bass Anglers Sportsman Society) Collegiate National Championship in Bemidji, MN on August 10-12. To qualify for this national championship, Saterlee and Loveday placed 15th at the B.A.S.S. College Wild Card Regional tournament on Lay Lake in June. If the team wins at the Bass Collegiate National tournament in August, they will advance to compete at the Professional Bassmasters Elite tournament, which is the “Super Bowl” of professional fishing. Calhoun also has two other boats that have qualified to compete at the Fishing League Worldwide (FLW) College National Championship to be held in 2018. Engineering Research and Consulting Makes Orlando Sentinel Top 100 Companies List Huntsville-based Engineering Research and Consulting (ERC) was recently selected as one of the 2017 Orlando Sentinel Top 100 Companies. The list of “Top 100 Companies” was created by the Orlando Sentinel and Best Companies Group. ERC was awarded 4th place for the large business category. This survey and award program was designed to identify, recognize and honor the best places of employment in Central Florida, benefiting the region’s economy, its work force and businesses. To be considered for participation, companies had to fulfill the following eligibility requirements: • Be a for-profit or not-for-profit business or government entity • Be a publicly or privately held business • Have a facility in Central Florida (Brevard, Flagler, Lake, Marion, Orange, Osceola, Polk, Seminole, Sumter and Volusia County) • Have at least 15 employees working in Central Florida • Must be in business a minimum of one year Business must undergo a two-part survey process. The first part consists of evaluating each nominated company’s workplace policies, practices, philosophy, systems and demographics. The second part consisted of an employee survey to measure the employee experience. The combined scores determined the top organizations and the final ranking. Best Companies Group managed the overall registration, survey and analysis process and determined the final rankings.
