Judith and Alistair McCrone, courtesy of Kellie Jo BrownLast spring, campus leadership participated in an allday retreat to discuss the current state of Cal Poly Humboldt’s research infrastructure. The objective was to frame out a shared vision of sustainable growth for the campus research community. We discussed what resources would be needed in the short term vs. long, gaps in infrastructure, and various organizational models to best meet our growing needs.
This April marks one year since that convening, and in that time our office has been working to support the campus through a major restructuring focused on colocating institutional compliance services. Our hopes for this work include:
Increased Awareness & Training: Creating better awareness and understanding of research compliance requirements among students, staff, and faculty. This involves tracking participation in training programs and feedback mechanisms to identify areas for improvement
Accessibility & Support: Evaluating the accessibility of research compliance resources and support services across various disciplines. This involves updating guidance documents, creating training materials, providing consultation services, as well as tracking feedback regarding the adequacy of support received.
Improved Compliance: Measuring the degree to which the university follows regulatory requirements and ethical guidelines related to research, particularly concerning the use of animals and human subjects.
Ca ac am su
improve efficiency of administrative processes, the availability of resources and support services, and the integration of compliance considerations into research planning and decision-making, the more successful we’ll be in sustaining our achievements.
- Executive Director, Kacie Flynn

On February 1st, Sponsored Programs Foundation hosted the 4th Biannual Speed Networking Event! Faculty from across campus met at Wrangletown Cider Company to discuss research interests and to brainstorm program ideas with one other. Thank you to all those that were able to join us!
Suzanne Lyons has attended two speed networking events and her feedback is a great example of how fruitful these short conversations can be. She says “The speed networking event is really enjoyable and super helpful! I wouldn’t have obtained my RSCA grant without it.” Suzanne is writing a book on math related cooperative games. At the last event she says an IT professor provided advice to help accomplish one of the dissemination outcomes of her current grant. She also discussed collaboration on future curriculum design with a colleague and looks forward to seeing where that might lead
The Biannual Speed Networking Events will happen on the third Thursday of every semester Save the date for the 5th Biannual Speed Networking Event on September 5th, 2024 4:00-6:00 pm Location TBD, but we‘re thinking of taking the event to Eureka!
In our efforts to reach out to local food producers and help them connect with faculty and students, we plan to invite those in the community who are interested in learning more about research on campus to attend IdeaFest this year to view posters and attend presentations If you have an idea for collaboration let us know!
If you have recently submitted a proposal to National Science Foundation (NSF) or National Institutes of Health (NIH), you may have already encountered the latest evolution in crafting (1) CVs and (2) reports of your current and pending sponsored projects that are tailored to the specific proposal you are submitting. Typically, both documents are required from all senior / key personnel listed on a federal funding proposal.
NSF and NIH have teamed up through the SciENcv portal as a common location to develop, save, and tailor these documents for all submissions to their funding opportunities
Why is this required?
The main purpose for requiring generation of these two documents through the SciENcv portal is the built-in certification by the researcher that the provided information is current, accurate, and complete. An additional benefit is that once this information has been entered, it is easy to update, customize, and transfer from NSF format to NIH format and vice versa.
How do I complete and/or update this information?
When clicking the SciENcv portal link, you land on a page that gives you multiple login options: your NSF account, eRA Commons account (NIH, NOAA), ORCiD account, Login.gov account (central federal login), and a few additional options. Choose the login method that’s most familiar to you
You will then be taken to a page that allows you to begin creating CVs and current & pending support documents Make sure you choose the format that is required for your currently planned submission (NSF or NIH).
If you have an ORCiD account (a comprehensive database of research and scholarly communications that strives for transparent and trustworthy connections between researchers, their contributions, and their affiliations), you can directly import publications from your ORCiD bibliography into your CV.
Once you save a document, you can return to it at anytime to update it, save multiple versions, convert between formats, etc
Are you thinking about submitting a grant?
SPF is available to assist you at each step of the way. We will help develop a budget, create a strong proposal, navigate funder requirements, and submit to the funding agency.
Find the contact information for your Pre-Award Specialists on our website.
The Team Review Program is designed to facilitate review and direct feedback on your grant proposal from an expert (or experts) in your field.
This program offers three options:
1) coordination of an informal zoom discussion with your peers in the early stages of a grant idea; 2) formal review of a full proposal by an expert of your choice; or
3) formal review of a full proposal by a team of three experts of your choice (only for large institutional grants)

She’s also joined a project funded internally through the Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activities Program (RSCA), looking at gender equity in wildlife-related publishing The study reviewed all research articles published in the Journal of Wildlife Management from 1999 through 2020, classified the gender of each author, and then calculated the women to men ratio in publishing as first- and coauthors across time. Their results revealed that while the overall gender gap has gradually narrowed over the past two decades, progress has been slower within recent years, and further, that studies are needed to ascertain any barriers that women scientists face today and to determine solutions to increase the recruitment and retention of women in wildlife research.
Though only focused on one journal, Rebeca appreciates how informative this study has been, and hopes it will lead to similar studies for other journals, and in other areas of STEM. She has also enjoyed the opportunity it’s given her to present at conferences, and to learn from other women who are collaborating on the project, including professors at Northern Arizona University
Outside of this work, Rebeca is on the board for the Wildlife Graduate Students Society, and recently joined the board of our local chapter of the Wildlife Society. After she graduates, one of her big picture goals is to work in a variety of ecosystems in Latin America, and perhaps more specifically, Ecuador, where her family lives.
The Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) is a National Science Foundation program that supports graduate students pursuing research-based masters and doctoral degrees in traditional STEM, social sciences, and STEM education.
We are providing an opportunity for up to 10 students to enroll in a course that includes videos, feedback on drafts, and one-on-one advising, to support completion of GRFP applications. The application can be found on our Engagement Hub. To see a panel discussion of prior Humboldt awardees and their experience as well as a video with NSF program officers, check out our YouTube page.

Dr. Michel Cartier, submitted a proposal to take two research students to attend the South By SouthWest conference, which offered students a networking and career development opportunity usually completely inaccessible to them. The work of the selected research students helped to develop the QTBIPOC Film Coalition at Cal Poly Humboldt, which has created a student-centered team of different majors to produce a student film festival and zine that centers QTBIPOC experiences, demonstrating how groundbreaking the medium of film and immersive media technologies can be when QTBIPOC creatives are given the attention and resources they deserve The QTBIPOC Film Coalition are currently in the process of finalizing plans for their upcoming student film festival and one day exhibition that will be hosted on campus in April. They’ll also be presenting their most updated ideas and works at this year’s IdeaFest in May.
