Elderly’s Exercise Equipment Design
Older adults have different exercise needs as they age. We derived the idea from the workout needs of the elderly with mobility impairments to the needs of those who want to strengthen their lower limbs. Our design provides a new op�on for them to do exercise safely and efficiently at home.

Exercise Physiology Design Guidelines

Individual's fitness declines 1 percent per year after age 60. Having a little improvement of physical condition helps to prevent further degeneration.
Strengthening lower limbs is particularly important as they help to support the entire body.
Lower limbs exercise is designed to enhance the strength and endurance of muscles, preventing the elderly from falling.
Sitting down is a safer posture for the elderly cause it prevents knees from overbearing.
Movements should be done using both feet by turns to simulate the walking pace.
Movements should be driven by muscles to protect joints from bearing force.
Resistance levels should be provided to cope with individual differences in movement ability.

Ergonomics Four Motions
Adduct legs toward the center of the body. This movement can strengthen the least-trained and weakest muscles located along the inner side of our thigh.
Straighten each leg and hold for a few seconds to strengthen the Quadriceps and alleviate the Osteoarthritis.
Lift each leg and push downward to simulate our walking pace. This effectively strengthens the Hip Flexors and Quadriceps.
Alternatively tapping toes and lifting heel helps to improve the

of the ankle joint.
After a discussion with geriatric physicians and sports experts, we realized that the priority for the elderly to maintain health and independence is to train their lower limbs. Take the risks of practicing in an unpredictable outdoor environment in mind, we decided to design a product which fits into the elderly's lifestyle and motivates them to do exercise more, making indoor practice an opportunity to promote health and happiness.

Round in shape and coated with silicone, easy to hold. When folded and fixed with magnets, the handles serve as the point we apply force to drag the equipment.

Adduction Panel
Round in shape and coated with silicone, improving the tactility to leg. The lawngreen panels serve as a hint for the leg to touch on.
Sleeve
The sleeves are designed to conceal the narrow slot and to avoid clothes from being into the slot. They conduct the function of hip marching.
Pedal
The strip bulges on its surface provide friction while the groove below is convenient to hook the pedal.
The screen displays counts, strength and duration, giving feedb ack and a sense of achievement.

Mechanism|
Angle Constraint
Linking rods and pedals are both subject to an angle constraint to avoid any injury. The ranges of motion of linking rods and pedals are 110 degrees and 40 degrees, respectively for each tilting direction.
Resistance Adjustment
Resistances come from springs. Adduction panel is connected to a vertical-hung spring by a cord, so the reciprocating vertical straightline motion will be converted into a horizontal straight-line motion, while a gear set regulates the resistance of knee extension.
Height Adjustment
The default height of the equipment is designed to comply with the height of the majority. For particular personal need, an adjustment mechanism is located at the bottom of the body and on the upper part of the rod, which can be set by the users according to their height.

1 Lay feet on the pedals and use thigh muscles to press against the panels.
Move ankles between the range of Plantar flexion and Dorsiflexion.

Press against the groove with the back of feet and stretch legs.
Fold the handles and magnets at the end will fix them.
Tilt the equipment then skid it to corners with wheels' assistance.

BOROBO
Vending Machine For Hospitalized Children
Being sick and hospitalized is a helpless process for children because they suffer from physical illness and have to deal with invasive medical treatment. Based on the fact that no enough psychological care is provided in Taiwan’s hospitals, we offered hospitalized children with a recrea�onal design, which assists them to regain control, company, and happiness.

Research|
Take the best children’s hospital - Boston Children Hospital as a model, we analyzed its therapy and service for children. After looking at Taiwan’s medical environment for children, we discovered that most hospitals in Taiwan do not provide friendly spaces for children.
Children’s Medical Rights / Issue
About Hospitals About Children
Taiwan has the highest patientnurse ratio in the world. Also, most hospitals lack entertaining spaces for children.
Children are afraid of invasive treatment and being separated from their family, but they can’t fully express their emotions.
About Play Therapy
Playing games is an important event for children, which helps them to convey their anxiety and gives them the sence of control.
About Entertainment About Family
Because of the inadequacy of nursing staff, family members are the main caregivers.
Most parents provide laptop games for children to play in the ward.
Children’s Wards / Site, People, Behavior
Children can borrow the story books from the library and read them in their wards.
Lounge
There are tables and chairs in the lounge, and people always sit there watching TV.
Garden
The only outdoor space on this floor, at which people can take a walk and enjoy the sunlight.
Children stay in their wards most of the time, resting and receiving treatment.

Purpose|
Our purpose is to bring hapiness to the children in hospitals. Based on the reseach, we made the four guidelines:
Connect vending machine and hapiness via gamification. Take advantage of the existing library.
Increase children’s activity properly.
Children can use the design by themselves or with family.

Peter passes through his mom, who is buying bread and his sisters, who are collecting blackberries.
3rd Floor
Peter sneaks into Mr. McGregor’s farm to steal vegetables but he was found and chased by Mr. McGregor.
4th Floor
Peter dodges the basket, hides in the pot and mess up the flower pot. After meeting the sparrow and white cat, he finally gets out of the farm.
5th Floor
Peter directly runs back to home and sleeps well with his mom’s company.

BOROBO | 22
BOROBO is a rolling ball game machine designed for hospitalized children. It has a series of finely developed routes based on different storybooks’scenarios, so the user plays like the main character in a storybook and experiences an interesting adventure. We hope to lighten hospitalized children’s anxiety and pain; meanwhile, to improve their hand-eye coordination.

A series of BOROBO machines and related story books deployed.
User│hospitalized children of 4 to 8 years old and their family
Read the story books.
Each child is given a key by the nursing staff.
Use the key to activate BOROBO.

BOROBO Logo Design
BOROBO takes the euphony of Ball Roll Ball, which means using the big sphere to move the small ball. Its form embodies the image of characters jumping out of a story book.

Human Factors
Set eye level and operation parts according to children’s average height. Set the diameter of sphere to accommodate routes without causing oppression. Separate layers with enough distance to ensure routes are visible. Aim at enhancing children’s hand-eye coordination. Take drip stand into consideration for single hand operation. Ensure drip stand does not interfere with the squating motion. Made of anti-virus materials to avoid cross-infection.

Press the key to activate the machine.
Take out the ball from the lower part.
Put the ball into the sphere from the upper opening.
Roll the sphere to move the ball along routes.

A pressed spring inside the machine makes the opening on the acrylic sheet (grey) align with the tunnel that the ball passed by, so the ball will roll through the opening and finally arrive at the lower part (red) along with some z shaped routes.
