We had 62 VBS programs during summer 2022 with thousands of children and families engaging in activities pointing them towards a gracious and loving Jesus! Our SECC VBS Training Team has already been at work on your behalf preparing for our 2023 Training Event that will take place at the La Sierra Spanish Church on February 26, 2023. young man once applied for a job as a farmhand. When the farmer asked the man what his qualifications were, he replied, “I can sleep when the wind blows.” The farmer wasn’t sure what he meant by that, but since he liked the fellow, the job was his. Several days later, the farmer and his wife were awakened in the middle of the night by a violent storm. They got up and quickly checked the house and barn, making sure things were safe & secure. They found everything buttoned up and fastened down - windows were all secured, logs by the fireplace, tools put away and even the animals were all boarded up with the new farmhand sleeping soundly. The farmer then understood the meaning of the young man’s words, “I can sleep when the wind blows.” He was faithful at his work and did what was needed. I would say that the farmhand was a huge success! Albert Einstein once remarked, “Try not to become a man of success. Rather become a man of value.” I would argue that value will lead to success! We find Joshua, in the Bible, being instructed by God on exactly how to be successful. Basically, God told him: “Be strong and very courageous. Study this Book of Instruction then you will be successful in everything you do. Be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all

you do.” So if we read and follow the ‘Handbook for Humans’ (the Bible) then we will be successful. Pretty simple! Have you ever wondered why pigeons walk so funny? They walk a kinda funky so they can see where they’re going. Pigeons can’t adjust their focus as they move they actually have to bring their head to a complete stop between steps in order to refocus. It works like this - head forward, stop; head back, stop. That’s the walk! We humans need to get in step with Mr. Pigeon - take a breath and stop between steps and refocus on where we are in relation to this world and the will of God! We all know people who should have succeeded but ended up in failure. Others are dealt a terrible hand but end up successful & thriving! It’s not rocket science those who spend their gifts & talents more wisely than others will likely succeed where others fail. When people want to test an air tank - the type used by divers - they test it by subjecting it to pressure. Only under intense pressure are hidden flaws exposed. The same goes for people: high praise can detect cracks of pride, wealth often reveals the flaw of selfishness, while power can expose intolerance. Seeking worldly success can be exhausting. As someone once noted: “The trouble with success is that the formula is the same as the one for a nervous breakdown.” The problem is we often have a faulty definition of true success. Success is not necessarily fame, fortune, & power. As Erma Bombeck said: “Success is Mother Teresa. their ideas and concerns. The ingredients for success are when you have gotten to a point that you’re regularly fulfilling the will of God in such a way that God is glorified, people are benefited, and His Kingdom is expanded!! You may be thinking - but these go against the grain of human nature. You’re right! As humans, we don’t naturally seek God’s will for success. Thus - our need for the ‘pigeon walk.’ Francis Chan nails it with this: “Our greatest fear shouldn’t be of failure but of succeeding at things in life that don’t really matter!” Life is so short - go for it while you can. George Carlin (such a funny guy) made this hilarious statement: “My tombstone? I’m thinking something along the lines of, ‘Geez, he was just here a minute ago.” So - how do YOU measure success? --

The Southland’s largest drinking water reservoir, Diamond Valley Lake was dedicated in 2000, nearly doubling the region’s surface water storage capacity to help safeguard Southern California from drought and emergencies. It stores 264 billion gallons of wa-
ter. RULES AND PARKING Visitors must refrain from picking the wildflowers and stay on trails to protect the area’s wildlife. Visitors also should be watchful of rattlesnakes, a particular risk in the area. Dogs are not permitted on the premises. A reserve interpreter will be available on the trail on Saturdays
from 9:00 am to noon to discuss topics that include the types of wildflowers, birding and the area’s geography. Parking is $11 ($5 for those 62 years and older, military members and veterans), and the trail fee is $4 per person. Pontoon boat rental and fishing information is available at dvmarina.com.
