The 12 Cambridge MBA Concentrations

MBA concentrations are sector-specific packages of electives, case challenges and workshops culminating in a Capstone project. MBAs choose one concentration in which to specialise during the final term. Culture, Arts and Media Management The concentration explores the arts and media perspective on issues which are confronting all business sectors – globalisation, new technology, brandbuilding, customer development, business model re-engineering, exploitation of intellectual property and much more.

Entrepreneurship We see enterprise increasingly becoming a social movement – a mind-set and methodology to make transformational changes happen. Join this concentration if you want to learn what it takes to generate exciting opportunities and how to take ideas to market.

Energy and Environment This concentration brings together the strengths of the business school in the areas of energy economics and policy. In a volatile age when energy is increasingly at the top of the agenda, managers need to understand how this is likely to change the business environment - creating threats and opportunities.

Finance After thirty years of confident models and assertions, finance theory is in disarray; a new architecture is needed. This concentration challenges you to contribute to its construction. You’ll analyse the causes and impact of financial bubbles, consider the part played by innovative financial engineering and examine the role played by banks.

Health Healthcare is a particularly challenging area in which to be a manager or leader. It is politically sensitive, subject to constant technological and scientific advances, and faces difficult circumstances with regard to demographic and lifestyle changes. The Health Strategies concentration addresses these topics.

Strategy and Marketing This concentration will provide you with a practical grounding in core skills: defining propositions that clients want, selling consultancy services to clients, and delivering successful consulting assignments, before stretching your abilities in a real consulting assignment.

Social Innovation Whatever the specific sector you’re interested in, this concentration is for people with an interest in leadership for social change, whether in the public, private or beyond profit sectors. This concentration will look at different business models to address social problems.

International Business In today’s semi-globalised, knowledgebased economy, many businesses are involved in some kind of international operations. The field of International Business (IB) deals with a subset of such firms – the multinational enterprises (or MNEs) – which undertake cross-border operations that also involve ownership and control of productive activities in more than one country.

Developing leaders

Developing leadership practice runs through all teaching elements throughout the MBA. We believe leadership skills are difficult to teach in isolation; leadership is about the every day, the way you work with others, the way you articulate ideas and build supportive teams and networks. We also think that listening to those who have done it and can relate the challenges first-hand is vital – hence our comprehensive series of leadership speaker events: MBA Curriculum:

Leadership in Action CEOs and top executives are the chief strategists, visionaries and leaders of their organisations. Anecdotal examples as well as academic research tell us that firms are a reflection of their top leaders.

City Speakers Series MBAs are also able to attend this series of talks, hosted by the Master of Finance (MFin) programme. Delegates have recently attended from: Citi, J.P.Morgan, Bank of England, Deutsche Bank and Amadeus Capital Partners among others.

This course hosts a group of specially selected senior executives. Through a series of informal group discussions, MBAs are given the unique opportunity to discuss matters around leadership with these high calibre individuals.

University of Cambridge Speaker Events There are a host of University-wide leadership events MBAs are invited to attend including the annual Magdalene College Investec Lecture in Business.


The Cambridge MBA Practical learning

Our core focus is on team work. MBAs gain frequent access to real clients from around the world, opening doors to career opportunities after the programme.

The Cambridge Venture Project (CVP) In term one you will work in teams to consult for one of the entrepreneurial firms in the Cambridge area. The CVP will give you first-hand experience of some of the challenges faced by innovators in high-risk, highpressure environments. Teams are allocated a Mentor and also have input from Cambridge Judge Business School faculty.

The Global Consulting Project (GCP) In the second term, you will form your own teams and consult with blue-chip multinational corporations or international organisations on location, on a particular aspect of their business. The GCP is a highlight of the Cambridge MBA for many, providing a valuable opportunity to apply your learning, experience new sectors or roles and build global networks with a view to your post-MBA career goals.

The Capstone Project The Capstone Project uses a real life case study to explore business theory. It rounds off the subject-specialist ‘Concentration’ work done, bringing together all the learning from the MBA curriculum in the sector area you will have chosen. The projects include: creating business plans, pitching for investment, or presenting analysis of business problems to client panels.

Summer Activities This period of study allows you the flexibility to pursue your own goals, whether through an individual project, work placement or research case study. The summer period presents another opportunity to link up with our network of business contacts going forward into your post-MBA career.


The Cambridge MBA Global Impact

Internationally diverse class: We select a nationally diverse class to ensure the dynamic exchange of ideas and business cultures. MBAs also partake in number of region-specific networks at the business school including the Cambridge Chinese Business Network and Cambridge Africa Business. Network. MBA Global Consulting Project : Students consult in teams for prestigious global clients-on location, anywhere in the world. Previous clients have included: Gulftainer, UAE; SAB Miller, South Africa and Google, Ireland. World leading faculty: Our faculty are at the top of the game in terms of impactful, globally relevant research – 97% of which was deemed ‘internationally recognised’ in a recent UK study. This is harnessed through a number of initiatives including the CambridgeChina Advisory Council and the Middle East Leadership Research Centre.

Global employment outcomes: The Cambridge MBA gives participants a global mindset and experience set, enabling internationally rounded careers and often re-location. Our last graduating class took up employment across 23 countries. Global treks and meet-ups: There are opportunities for international career treks and meet-ups with members of the business school network located around the world, across the MBA year. International philanthropy: MBAs work with the school’s partner charity, Aiducation, throughout the year.
