2016 Calendar as Annual Report FY 2015

The Lilian Johnson Lodge is the exciting culmination of Highlander’s Generations to Come Capital Campaign. We celebrated the groundbreaking in 2014 and at Homecoming 2015, cut the ribbon!

This month, we welcome the first guests for a Non-violent Direct Action Practitioners Training, hosted & facilitated by the Combahee Alliance*, to train hundreds of freedom fighters in creative tactics and build collective power and strengthen capacity of Black and People of Color organizers across the country.

Lilian Johnson was the first woman to receive a doctorate degree from Cornell University, and former college president known for her hospitality and community work, including cooperative development.

She first loaned, then donated the original Highlander property near Monteagle, TN.

This art installation of Highlander history from beginnings to present day graces the wall in the front room of the Lilian Johnson Lodge. It was created by capital campaign coordinator Melody Reeves, also a visual artist.

History is made by those whose names we know and don’t know and in addition to Myles Horton, Septima Clark, Bernice Robinson, John Lewis, Rosa Parks and Nimrod Workman are featured many whose names history doesn’t teach or remember but without whom liberation and justice are impossible.

Thoughts from Melody: It was inspiring to work with Highlander’s incredible 80-year archive of photographs from movement history. Transferring the prints onto gesso boards required hours of careful handwork across the image surfaces. While doing so, I tried to “listen” for the right color and texture for each panel and stay attuned to the arc of the whole. My intention was to lift up the strength, creativity and vision in these faces, and give gratitude for their work.

May their light give us light in making the way forward.

The Greensboro Justice Fund Fellowship at Highlander (GJFH) was created in honor of the five community organizers CĂŠsar Cauce, Mike Nathan, Bill Sampson, Sandy Smith and Jim Waller who were murdered by the Ku Klux Klan and the Nazi Party on November 3, 1979.

Using the award from a civil case that found the city of Greensboro and members of the Klan complicit in the murders, the Greensboro Justice Fund was established to carry on the legacy of their work.

On their 30th anniversary, the Fund ceased operating and passed on assets to Highlander and the Beloved Community Center to carry forward their vision.

Holden Cession, Zac Henson, DJ Hudson, Marcelle Vielot, and Rocio Villalobos represent the 4th class of the GJFH and are organizing around issues of: alternative economics, reproductive rights, immigrant detention centers, Black Lives Matter movement and Moral Mondays.

Each year, five organizers from across the South are selected for this yearlong skills and relationship building fellowship.

The inaugural class of the Appalachian Economic Transition Fellowship completed their year-long fellowship in 12 host communities with 32 cross-sector partners. We celebrated accomplishments of the inaugural cohort with a Closing Gathering in Knoxville, TN in May 2015, including a reception, discussions, and presentations. Fellows each presented a 10-minute ‘TED-type’ talk highlighting the personal and professional development they experienced.

Fellows worked in central Appalachian counties of Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee, North Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia, and regionally, fostering new or strengthening existing collaboration among organizations and entities, boosting networks and connectivity within states and across the region and providing increased capacity in fields that are instrumental to a just transition.

Highlander’s 8th annual Wild & Wacky, Witty & Wonderful Workshop Work Week, provides a Highlander experience for community workers, educators, and organizers from across the country.

Participants spend half their day in social change workshops on popular education and community organizing, engage with Highlander’s history and methodologies, and spend half a day working in service to the place of Highlander, tending the garden, clearing trails, and more. In 2015, we welcomed two fellows from the Fred Edwards Trust in Scotland. Participants also came from Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, Indiana, Texas, Georgia, and North Carolina.

This photo from our Children’s Justice Camp collection is one of our favorites.

Highlander was protested by our own Children’s Camp that year with the theme focused on organizing and the nuts and bolts of protests and actions. They had done their research on our environmental practices, met with us, and presented their demands and petitions. Overall, they thought we were doing pretty well environmentally but thought we could do better, especially with cleaning materials and light bulbs. Other themes have included voting, and immigration through the lens of who is my neighbor? Children who have come up through camp have gone on to be received by the President, run organizations and coordinate major campaigns.

Also this month, we congratulate Alternate ROOTS on its 40th anniversary and welcome them back to the hill. One of Highlander’s key roles is strategic convenings, out of which come new formations that strengthen movement infrastructure in the South. Alternate ROOTS was launched out of a gathering at Highlander four decades ago to address the needs of artists working for social justice. We are glad to celebrate this anniversary and to be a collaborative partner over the years.

Seeds of Fire is Highlander's intergenerational organizing and leadership development program. The SOF program grounds participants in Southern movement history, deepens their personal identity as leaders and organizers and uplifts the importance of intersectionality.

SOF consists of a week-long camp, minicamps in local communities, an advisory committee and ongoing organizing and leadership support for young activists and organizers across the South.

In 2015, Highlander organized a Seeds of Fire Living Legacy Tour, the first year of a three-year plan to build deeper intergenerational organizing relationships grounded in living history and current work in local communities.

This past year, 28 young people and their adult allies traveled throughout Atlanta and Albany, GA, St. Helena’s Island and Charleston, SC, Cincinnati, OH, Louisville, KY and connected with the National Movement for Black Lives Matter Convening in Cleveland, OH. In 2016, Seeds of Fire will tour Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana.

In late July of 2015, thousands of Black organizers came together in Cleveland, OH at Cleveland State University for the National Convening for Black Lives.

People convened in a series of workshops, forums, assemblies, and cultural circles for three days. Black youth from the Seeds of Fire tour joined staff and board members from Highlander in an experience that was important and necessary.

Family members of some of the fallen from previous years were in attendance during the convening, and dialogued with participants and rallied alongside them.

From the family of Emmett Till to the family of Mike Brown, Rakia Boyd, and Cleveland’s own Tamir Rice, families came to share their story and their spirt.

This year, Highlander continues to support the Movement for Black Lives and is part of the Combahee Alliance, hosting and coanchoring a training series that will prepare thousands of Black and People of Color organizers across the nation to flank Black-led leadership within organizations with focus on long-term movement strategy and direct action tactic development.

No Longer Erased: Lifting up Racial and Gender Justice in our Homes, Communities and the Movement�: Highlander Homecoming is a movement building gathering and a time of great strategies and follow-up actions, singing and fun. We gathered in 2015 in the midst of a national movement for Black lives, and our theme lifted up the women, gender non-conforming, and transgendered folks who have been the backbone of this and other historic movements for social justice, and whose experiences all too often are silenced. We pushed our understanding of gender beyond the gender binary, and lifted up Black women, trans voices, and women across race to examine the current times, and how we get where we need to go.

Workshops during Homecoming included issues around Black Girls Matter, Media Justice, Popular Education, and Creating a Solidarity Economy.

We also honored the life and legacy of Guy Carawan in a national memorial tribute with musicians and friends from all across the region and country.

Economics & Governance An Economics and Governance curriculum developed by Highlander in collaboration with regional and national partners provides a 16- to 20-session process for communities, organizations or coalitional efforts to build analysis and strategy on economic and governance systems and park action. The curriculum includes four sections – Foundational Grounding and Understanding, Economics and Democracy, Developing an Action Plan, and a section to build strong Internal Systems based on Values of Economic Justice and Democratic Participation. A pilot training of trainers in November 2015 brought together groups from Mississippi and Alabama to New York. During 2016, groups are implementing the training in their communities.

Highlander also anchors the Southern Grassroots Economies Project. SGEP held two regional gatherings in 2015, and met with USDA representatives and Congresswoman Alma Adams from Greensboro, NC, as part of their work toward economic democracy and building cooperatives.

SGEP moves forward in 2016 with a Southern Reparations Loan Fund and policy development and strategies for the next steps of this work to change the economic landscape of the South, with an eye toward the next Coop Econ regional gathering Oct. 7-9, 2016, in Epes, AL. Photos: Pilot Run of Training

On November 8, the nation will vote for the next President of the United States, and we encourage all to vote. Voting is just a part of the process, but one that is an essential piece.

There were many obstacles to overcome with voting rights and organizing attempts to address voting suppression from Citizenship Schools to Freedom Summer in Mississippi to the Selma movement in Alabama. Efforts from those campaigns and others led to the passing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Voting rights continue to be under attack. After the 2008 election, Voter IDs surfaced to suppress voting, and as recent as 2013, the Supreme Court struck down a section of the Voting Rights Act that dealt with preclearing any changes in voting laws in some states to the federal government or in federal court.

The Supreme Court’s decision gave way for more voter suppression in the South with harsher voting laws.

Primarily in the South in the past, black voters were faced with literacy tests and poll taxes that restricted voter registration.

Septima Clark (middle above) and Bernice Robinson (teaching, above and below) were over the Citizenship Schools supported by Highlander to teach literacy to tackle the restrictions. Schools spread throughout the South and contributed to countless registrations from black voters.

As the seasons change, the fight for social justice remains. People involved in the movement work tirelessly throughout the year no matter the weather.

There have been many in the movement who have passed on, and while their sun has set, it rises for those who carry on the legacy of their loved ones.

One by one, we are witnessing people being awakened unlike ever before.

Together with those who have been already organizing, we are building a powerful movement that has shifted the national conversation. We are witnessing a force that is full of leaders. Full of love.

Full of bravery. Full of hope. Full of resolve.

The movement belongs to the people.

The victory belongs to the people. The challenges we face, we face together across generation and across race. We stand on the shoulders of the freedom fighters before us and will continue the work for the Long Haul.

To the Highlander family, we send love and appreciation for not only the work you do in your respective roles , but for being you. We wish you a fruitful next year full of solidarity, love, and freedom fighting.

Through popular education, participatory research, and cultural work, we help create spaces — at Highlander and in local communities — where people gain knowledge, hope and courage, expanding their ideas of what is possible. We nurture and develop leadership and help create and support strong, democratic organizations that work for justice, equality and sustainability in their own communities and that join with others to build broad movements for social, economic and restorative environmental change.
