Marijuana Use Is Outpacing Cigarette Use for the First Time on Record

More people in the U.S. are now smoking marijuana than cigarettes, according to a Gallup poll.

Cigarette use has been trending downward during the past decades, with only 11% of Americans saying they smoke them in a poll conducted July 5 to 26, compared to 45% in the mid-1950s.

Sixteen percent of Americans say they smoke marijuana, with 48% saying they have tried it at some point in their lives. In 1969, only 4% of Americans said they smoked marijuana. Attitudes around both substances have also shifted dramatically.

In 2019, 83% of Americans said they thought cigarettes were “very harmful” to smokers, while 14% said they are “somewhat harmful.” Nine out of 10 adults said in 2013 that smoking causes cancer, while 91% of

smokers surveyed in 2015 said they wish they never started.

“Smoking cigarettes is clearly on the decline and is most likely to become even more of a rarity in the years ahead,” Gallup Senior Scientist Dr. Frank Newport said. “This reflects both public awareness of its negative effects and continuing government efforts at all levels to curtail its use.”

Meanwhile, 53% of people said in a July poll they think marijuana has positive effects on those who use it.

Still, alcohol is the most popular substance, and has remained consistent for a while.

Sixty-seven percent of Americans in the most recent poll said they are drinkers, compared to 63% in 1939. About a third totally abstain from alcohol.

The Fall of High Times: A Cautionary Tale for the Cannabis Industry

In a shocking turn of events, High Times, one of the most iconic brands in cannabis history, is now in receivership. Once a trailblazer that brought cannabis culture to the forefront, High Times is being dismantled and sold off piece by piece.

A Legacy Unraveled

High Times was the pioneer of cannabis journalism, featuring legendary writers Hunter S. Thompson, William S. Burroughs, Charles Bukowski, Allen Ginsberg, and Truman Capote! And at their peak (1987), had a circulation of 500,000! However, the magazine industry’s decline since the mid2000s hit it hard. The transition to digital was challenging, and High Times couldn’t keep up.

The Oklahoma Crackdown –

Where is My Weed?

New data from the state of Oklahoma, released in January 2024, shows that the number of active cannabis licenses has dropped dramatically over the past 12 months. A mixture of oversupply, crackdowns on illicit operators and a complete moratorium on new licenses has resulted in a 27.4% decline in active licenses in the state. This is a mixture of transportation, processor, dispensary and cultivation licenses effecting the entire supply chain.

Diversification Gone Awry

In an attempt to stay relevant, High Times branched into retail stores, product brands, delivery services, and merchandise. Unfortunately, these ventures failed to capture the market, and the acquisition of Moxie did little to help. The website, once a beacon of cannabis culture, lost its substance and audience.

The Final Curtain

Despite its decline, High Times still holds significant brand recognition. Yet, its future remains uncertain as it’s stripped for parts by the same receiver who handled Herbl. Assets, including stores, a cultivation business, and intellectual property, are up for sale, with the total value potentially

exceeding $11 million.

The Aftermath

The downfall of High Times serves as a stark reminder of the volatile nature of the cannabis industry. As the brand is auctioned off, the community is left pondering what could have been done differently. High Times’ story is a blend of pioneering success and cautionary failure—a lesson for all in the cannabis space.

High Times’ assets, including their West Hollywood store and 420.com, are now up for grabs. The deadline for bids is fast approaching, marking the end of an era for this legendary brand.

Recreational use is still not legal, but medical marijuana is. Even the number of registered medical cannabis patients has declined these past 12 months. Down 11% since early 2022, the usage trend in Oklahoma is definitely on the decline – evidenced by the dozens of dispensaries all over the state who have shuttered their doors.

For those who don’t know, Oklahoma rejected a recreational legalization initiative earlier this year.

Smoking Market Continues to Grow

The global smoking accessories market size was valued at USD 64.4 billion in 2021 and is anticipated to expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.0% from 2022 to 2030. The growth of the market is attributed to the increasing number of smokers around the world coupled with the rising trend of launching new and innovative products to intrigue more users. Moreover, the rising preference of consumers to make their own tobacco over products that are factory-made as they can be customized as per their needs along with saving money is a key factor that is anticipated to drive the market in the coming years.

The introduction of various flavored tobacco to be used in accessories and their increasing popularity among smokers of all age groups is driving the market for smoking accessories.

The availability of various flavors such as chocolate, fruit, menthol, and others to be used in water pipes and vaporizers and their high usage, demand, and popularity among the young population is another factor driving the market. In addition, the increasing usage of smoking accessories such as water pipes due to the misconception that they are a healthier alternative for a cigarette as they filter out the smoke before inhaling is a primary factor that is driving the demand for smoking accessories thus contributing to market expansion.

The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on various industries. Some of them were highly profited due to COVID-19 while the others were highly negatively impacted due to no demand from consumers, and disruption in sales, and distribution channels. However, the impact of COVID-19 on the smoking accessories industry was comparatively limited. The negative impact was majorly caused due to disruption in the sales channel and distribution channel and factory closures. As a result of which the sale of smoking accessories was comparatively low as expected; however, with the lifting of restrictions the market came back on track and started to grow.

The high usage and demand of waterpipes and vaporizers due to their property of portability and ability of filtration as they can separate tar from herbs while being burned is contributing to market growth. The increasing usage of smoking accessories as they improve the quality of herbs after burning and provide a better smoking experience to the user is further driving the market for smoking accessories in the coming years. Moreover, increasing demand for alternative medicinal herbs to be inhaled as a healthy step is resulting in increased demand and use of smoking accessories thus driving the market.

The growing culture of smoking among the young population along with an increasing

number of smoking cafes and bars across various regions is propelling the market growth. The growing demand for smoking accessories in developing countries is further expected to fuel the market growth during the forecast period. Moreover, the easy availability of smoking accessories in diverse places is also contributing to market growth. Smoking accessories such as water pipes and vaporizers provide a superior experience to users resulting in high adoption of such accessories as they produce smoke at a comparatively higher level thus boosting the growth of the market for smoking accessories.

The presence of strong marketing campaigns by various players is surging the demand for smoking accessories. The rising number of initiatives and stringent regulations by the government regarding the consumption of tobacco and nicotine is expected to restrain the market growth during the forecast period. Moreover, increasing awareness among consumers towards the availability of therapies for nicotine replacement and increasing health awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco and nicotine on the body are further expected to hinder the market growth. However, the introduction and launch of various new and innovative products as per the consumer demand are expected to present key opportunities for market expansion.

A Whirlwind Tour of the Latest Marijuana News High Times, Indeed:

Marijuana, the magical herb that’s been lighting up lives (and debates) for centuries, is back in the headlines with enough twists and turns to rival a Cheech & Chong movie marathon. So buckle up, space cowboys, because we’re about to take a riproaring ride through the latest news from the wacky world of weed.

First Stop: The Rescheduling Rollercoaster

Remember that federal classification of marijuana as a Schedule I narcotic, alongside heroin and LSD? Yeah, it’s about as outdated as a Tamagotchi. The good news is, the tide might be turning. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is finally taking a closer look at cannabis, with whispers of potential reclassification to a less restrictive Schedule II on the horizon. This could open the door for more research, easier banking access for the industry, and maybe even a presidential pardon for Snoop Dogg’s stash (fingers crossed).

Next Stop: The Green Rush Goes Global

While America bumbles around like a stoned teenager at a keg party, other countries are blazing new trails. Thailand recently became the first Southeast Asian nation to fully legalize marijuana, joining the likes of Canada and Uruguay as weed-friendly paradises. And guess what? The sky didn’t fall, grandma didn’t start breakdancing, and the world kept spinning. This global green wave is putting pressure on prohibitionist holdouts like the US, proving that maybe, just maybe, reefer madness is just a bad 50s B-movie.

But wait, there’s more!

• Ohio’s “Tokin’ at Home” Experiment: The Buckeye State has legalized homegrown cannabis, but dispensaries are still as elusive as Bigfoot sightings. So Ohioans are left to their own herbal Houdini acts, conjuring up cannabis from basements and backyards. Talk about a grassroots movement!

• Potentially Potent Painkillers?: Research is suggesting that marijuana-based meds could be a game-changer for chronic pain management. This could offer relief to millions suffering from opioids and other addictive painkillers. Because let’s be honest, who wants to choose between OxyContin and Cheech’s Marin?

closet, chefs are whipping up weed-infused haute cuisine, and even yoga studios are offering “canna-bliss” classes. It’s a far cry from the days of reefer madness propaganda films, and frankly, a much more chill vibe.

So, what does the future hold for our favorite leafy friend?

The crystal ball is still a little cloudy, but the signs are pointing towards a greener future.

• From Reefer Madness to Reefer Renaissance: The stigma surrounding marijuana is slowly but surely fading. Celebrities are coming out of the cannabis

With public opinion shifting, research mounting, and even Big Pharma dipping its toes into the THC pool, it’s hard to deny the momentum behind marijuana reform. Whether it’s full legalization, medical expansion, or just a collective shrug and

acceptance that weed isn’t the devil’s lettuce after all, one thing’s for sure: the conversation is changing, and the reeferman is finally getting a seat at the table.

So, light up a spliff, spark up a joint, or roll yourself a fat blunt (responsibly, of course), and savor the sweet aroma of change. The times, they are a-changin’, and marijuana is finally getting the respect it deserves. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a date with a brownie and a Netflix documentary about the history of hemp. Peace out!

P.S. Don’t forget to check out your local laws and regulations before embarking on any herbal adventures. Safety first, even in the wacky world of weed!

Classic (and Easy) Cannabis Brownie Recipe

Remember way back when “edibles” had nothing to do with cannabis? Then there dawned the brownie – A marvel of a culinary delight. Whipping up a try of “special” brownies was a right of passage for most young adults and truly a novelty. It was a great alternative to smoking and a wonderful opportunity to experience a different kind of high.

Now edibles are everywhere – and we applaud that. You can get your high from almost anything including gummies, chocolate shakes, twinkies, and even throat lozenges.

But here at Counter Culture Times we still like the idea of whipping up a classic tray of our favorite edible – the brownie. So here is the recipe we use when the staff has a craving:

Brown Butter Pot Brownies Recipe

Ingredients:

1/2 cup unsalted butter

1 cup cannabis-infused butter (cannabutter)

2 1/4 cups granulated sugar

4 large eggs

1 1/4 cups unsweetened cocoa powder

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

Instructions:

1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a 9×13-inch baking pan with parchment paper.

2. In a saucepan, melt then simmer the unsalted butter over low heat. After a little while the butter will start to turn a golden brown color. Watch for small browned bits at the bottom of the pan, which are the milk solids caramelizing.

3. Once browned, remove from heat, pour into a bowl, and stir in the granulated sugar.

4. Beat in the eggs one at a time, ensuring each is fully incorporated before adding the next.

5. Sift together the cocoa powder, salt, and baking powder, and gradually add them to the wet mixture, stirring well.

6. Add the vanilla extract, and all-purpose flour to the batter, mixing until just combined.

7. In a separate saucepan, melt the cannabisinfused butter over low heat.

8. Incorporate the cannabis-infused butter into the brownie batter, ensuring an even distribution.

9. Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and smooth the top with a spatula.

10. Bake for approximately 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with moist crumbs, not wet batter.

Allow the brownies to cool before cutting into squares. Enjoy responsibly!

Note: Dosage can vary based on the potency of your cannabis-infused butter, so adjust servings accordingly for your desired experience.

Now Bake Up and Enjoy!!!

While it may have a stronger herbal flavor compared to cannabis oil, cannabutter enthusiasts appreciate the traditional touch it brings to baked goods. Please note that cannabutter has a much shorter shelf life than cannabis oil, so use it within a few days of preparation for optimal freshness.

Ingredients 1 cup butter

¼ ounce decarbolized cannabis (see instructions)

Optional: 1 cup water

How to Prepare Cannabutter

1. Decarboxylation:

• Preheat your oven to 245°F (120°C).

• Grind the cannabis coarsely with a hand grinder.

• Spread the ground cannabis on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet.

2. Infusing the Butter:

• Melt the butter in a saucepan over low heat.

• Add the decarboxylated cannabis to the melted butter.

• Keep the heat low (ideally between 160ºF and 180°F) and let the mixture simmer for 2 to 3 hours, stirring occasionally. Be careful not to let the mixture boil.

3. Straining the Butter:

• Set a funnel on top of a jar and line it with cheesecloth.

• Once the butter has cooled slightly, pour it over the cheesecloth funnel and allow it to strain freely. Avoid squeezing the cheesecloth to prevent plant material from getting into your butter.

4. Storing the Cannabutter:

• Transfer the strained cannabutter into a container or jar.

• Store it in the refrigerator or freezer. Cannabutter can be kept in the fridge for several weeks and in the freezer for up to six months.

In a double boiler over simmering water, melt the chocolate chips, butter, and cannabis-infused coconut oil together. Stir until smooth and well combined. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.
