HOXTON MINI PRESS

AUTUMN 2019

Hoxton Mini Press is British What does it mean to be British as we teeter on the edge of Europe? ‘Who knows’ is the obvious answer. But a deeper answer is that we’re very proud to be who we are. Hoxton Mini Press publishes distinctly British books that are focussed on London and other parts of the country and we celebrate the best of this country: sharp humour, distinctive style, assured quality and great diversity. Our books represent those values that tie us to the rest of the world, not push us away. Our sell-out book Portrait of Britain is back for a new edition of the best portraits of people in Britain and is accompanied by a wider-ranging Portrait of Humanity showing moving portraits from around the world (in conjunction with the very British institution, Magnum Photos). Funland looks at the colourful and rather odd style of British seaside resorts, and after the great success of our Opinonated Guide to East London we are broadening our range to include ‘opinionated guides’ to Vegan London and London Architecture. Go online for information, buy our books for opinion. Britain. It’s still Great. Honest.

The London Underground 1970-1980 Mike Goldwater Beautiful black and white photographs taken across a decade on one of the world’s most iconic transport systems. This is Book 6 in the series ‘Vintage Britain’. Think of the London Underground and what comes to mind? Human traffic during rush hour, buskers tinkering and strumming on instruments, trains whizzing through tunnels... These visual hallmarks are there in Mike Goldwater’s pictures (taken between

1970 and 1980), yet he captures the quiet moments too: the precious kisses goodbye, the lone figures deep in thought on escalators, a small boy dozing on his dad’s shoulder, the homeless man curled up next to his belongings. We see the old ticket booths (before travelcards existed), retro carriages, whisky adverts and bell flares too. Full of human interaction and character, these black and whites form a nostalgic portrait of our beloved Underground. Mike Goldwater’s editorial work has been widely exhibited and featured in many major magazines and newspapers.

A colourful portrait of the capital’s much-loved but fading launderettes. Photographer Joshua Blackburn has made it his mission to photograph every laundrette in London – more than 300. As high streets grow ever more homogenous, these are one of the few businesses that retain their striking individuality. But they’re an endangered species: many close every year across the UK. ‘The colours, signs, machines, surfaces

and geometry are impossible to resist,’ says Blackburn, whose project started as a popular online blog. His new book featuring a selection of photos capture the colourful design and community spirit of the humble launderette. Invisible Jumpers Joseph Ford

Photographs of jumpers blending into their background from an inventive 1000-hour knitting project. Photographer Joseph Ford and knitting pro Nina Dodd have dedicated more hours than is reasonable to creating bespoke jumpers (for both humans and animals) that blend seamlessly into their surroundings – from bus seats to bushes, carpets to coastlines. The

images are executed with such painstaking precision that should the camera, or jumper for that matter, move by an inch the illusion would unravel. This book is a playful ode to the eccentric British tradition of ugly Christmas jumpers – except these are not so ugly, they’re really rather good. Joseph Ford shoots advertising and editorial photography as well as working on personal projects.

Urban Gypsies Paul Wenham-Clarke

A rare look inside a close-knit community of travellers living under the A40 flyover in London. This is Book 9 in the series ‘Tales from the City’. The Westway is, for most of us, a mundane and ugly slab of tarmac, a facilitator to get to a destination (it connects London to south England’s major motorways) – but for a group of travellers it’s the roof of their home. Paul Wenham-Clarke spent many months gaining the trust of the community’s leaders for unrivalled access to this otherwise secret world. His resulting portraits, taken at parties, weddings and in homes, are intimate, arresting and at times strangely comic. They reveal how strong and unique the identity of these people are, even when surrounded by the sweeping currents of London. Paul Wenham-Clarke has been a professional photographer for over 30 years, working for commercial and advertising clients, but now he focuses on documentary projects, many of which have won awards. He is also professor of photography at the Arts University Bournemouth.

Funland Rob Ball Richly colourful photographs that capture the nostalgia and vulnerability of British seaside resorts. From Blackpool to Brighton, the pastel colours, faded arcades and worn-out carpets of British coastal towns evoke a particular nostalgia. With the changing tides of the British political landscape these traditional resorts appear fragile and some are falling into disrepair. Nevertheless some are thriving

(thanks to regeneration funds), and all retain a special charm and retro appeal. Shooting for more than a decade since 2009, Rob Ball has documented over 35 coastal towns. His images serve as a record of a unique culture that is at risk of disappearing forever. Rob Ball is a British photographer and senior lecturer at Canterbury Christ Church University. This is his third photography book exploring coastal communities.

The East End in Colour 1980-1990 Tim Brown

A second volume of astonishing unpublished photos documenting East London’s changing landscape. This is Book 5 in the series ‘Vintage Britain’. Following the sell-out success of The East End in Colour 1960-1980, this book by a new photographer continues from 1980 as the regeneration of the East End accelerates to an unprecedented degree. Tim Brown, a driver on London Underground’s Central Line, spent his spare time photographing the city’s financial centre and transport hubs, including

the Docklands area just before the developers seized control of this vast industrial wasteland. His never-before-seen colour images were discovered by photographer Chris Dorley-Brown who edited and curated both this book and David Granick’s The East End in Colour 1960-1980. Like Granick’s photographs, Tim Brown’s book serves as a nostalgic record of a corner of the capital that has changed almost beyond recognition. Tim Brown began taking photos in 1980 and worked for London Underground for over 20 years. He is now retired and lives in Essex.

London’s Square Mile A Secret City Polly Braden & David Kynaston

Street photographs that capture the strange but influential heart of London’s historic financial district. This is Book 8 in the series ‘Tales from the City’ London’s Square Mile – also known as the City of London – is both well-known and little known. Millions pass through or work within its winding alleyways and cobbled passages but few are truly aware of its vast power and significance. The City is a self-contained kingdom at the core of global finance, one so important it boasts its own Lord Mayor and police force. Its history is rich and complex with repercussions that are all too real today. Together with text written by world-renowned historian David Kynaston, these ethereal photographs of people captured amongst imposing architecture begin to decode one of the most influential and cryptic parts of London. Polly Braden is a British documentary photographer who explores the relationship between everyday life, work, leisure and economics. This is her fourth photography book. David Kynaston is an esteemed historian who has written over 18 books, including the acclaimed four-volume The City of London (1994–2001).

Paradise Street The lost art of playing outside Nostalgic photographs that celebrate the lost freedom of children playing on the street. This is Book 4 in the series ‘Vintage Britain’. Half a century ago, ‘playing out’ was expected of British kids who came together, in all weathers, to run, jump, skip, swing, kick, fight and climb – usually unsupervised. With growing fears over children’s vulnerability in modern society much of this has been lost. Paradise Street brings together the work of seven photographers including Shirley Baker,

Martin O’Neill and Paul Kaye, most who lived and worked among the people they photographed. Spanning the early 30s to the late 1970s, these black-and-white images are a celebration of community, trust and friendship, showing how attitudes towards children’s safety have shifted over the 20th century. Photographers: Shirley Baker, Paul Kaye, Robin Dale, John Gay, Henry Grant and David Lewis Hodgson. All images are from the archives of Mary Evans Picture Library.

Miami Beach 1988-1995 Barry Lewis

Black and white photographs that capture the colourful characters of Miami Beach in the early 90s. Each Christmas between 1988 and 1995, photographer Barry Lewis travelled to South Beach, Miami, to trade the harsh London winter for a tropical paradise. There he photographed the diverse (and eccentric) people who made up the community: fashionistas, newly-arrived Cubans (following the Meriel exodus in 1980), Jewish retirees from New York, drag queens and the gay population who flocked to ultra-cool Ocean Drive for the party scene. Lewis’ images capture the vibrancy of an area coming back to life after years of crime, drugs and violence. The photos are accompanied by quotes from Lewis’ subjects. Barry Lewis is a London-based photographer and filmmaker. He has worked internationally for books and magazines from Life to National Geographic. As well as photo-journalism and portraiture, he has directed over 20 documentaries, commercials and art films. His work has been exhibited at the V&A, Museum of London and The Photographers’ Gallery.

New Girl Order Iain Mckell

A fashion photographer has identified an emerging sub-culture in a band of female artists in North London. Photographer Iain McKell, well known for documenting new cultural trends and subcultures, befriended a tribe of young female artists and spent two years capturing their lives in and around a shared warehouse in Tottenham. His resulting photographs depict a hedonistic lifestyle of freedom and creative expression. Calling themselves ‘the sisterhood’, the characters McKell met together form a fierce army of women who are free from cultural restraints. Iain McKell is a British fashion, portrait and social documentary photographer with a particular interest in underground sub-societies, as seen in his previous book, The New Gypsies, published by Prestel in 2011. McKell’s work has been featured in Vogue Italia and i-D among others. This is his fourth photography book.

Sisters Sophie Harris-Taylor Rights sold: Korean - A Certain Book

Twins Peter Zelewski

Few relationships are as deep or as complex as those between sisters. These tender portraits of over 100 sisters combined with short interviews reveal the jealousies, fears, love and laughter that can co-exist at the heart of this most intimate of bonds.

Peter Zelewski has spent years capturing the faces and stories of identical twins. Some inexplicably lost their hearing at the exact same time, others unlock each others’ phones with their indistinguishable fingerprints, but perhaps more surprisingly, some don’t get on. These powerful portraits tap into one of the most fascinating of all human relationships.

East London Food

Portrait of Britain

Rosie Birkett & Helen Cathcart

with the British Journal of Photography. Intro by Will Self

East London has become the most exciting place to eat in the UK. Home to a vibrant and diverse community, it has attracted a wave of gastronomic talent, including top chefs, young producers and bold entrepreneurs. This book, written by Rosie Birkett with photography by Helen Cathcart, follows 40 people at the heart of a culinary phenomenon: from Michelin-starred chefs and specialist butchers to foragers and beekeepers. Apr 2016 304pp, 261mm x 202mm Hardback, copper foil £28 ISBN: 978-1-910566-05-3

These magnificent photographs capture at once the great diversity and the inescapable identity of the British. Gay, straight, bisexual and non-normative; male, female and non-binary; old, young and in between — how can it be that these — every one a compelling identity in its own right — are nonetheless trumped by a Britishness as heavy and irresistible as a Dundee fruit cake? Bubblegum

Badly Repaired Cars

Emily Stein

Ronni Campana

Emily Stein’s photographs of children blowing bubblegum on beaches around the world are a portrait of the freedom, innocence and joy of youth.

These colourful close-ups of cars held together by tape and string show the best (or worst) in auto DIY and elevate broken Bentleys and bashed bonnets into something akin to abstract art.

Hand Jobs: Life as a Hand Model

Men Photographing Women in the 70s

Oli Kellett & Alex Holder

Michael Abramson

These hand models are the stars of the biggest advertising campaigns around, but you’ve never seen their faces... until now. 24 portraits, 24 ways to peel a banana.

Once a month, in 1970s Chicago, men were allowed to take cameras into underground strip clubs. Michael Abramson, a local photographer, thought it would be more revealing to photograph the men photographing the women. Left in a drawer until now, the resulting images are a fascinating, funny and at times unsettling portrayal of the uninhibited male gaze.
