Therearesomethings Godcannotdo
Whenwethink aboutGodbeingTheAlmighty,wesee Himashaving infinitepower andauthority inheavenand earth,andthis iscertainly true.Rememberthepassage inMatthew 19:26where JesusisexplainingtoHisdisciples abouthowdifficultitisforawealthy persontoenterintoheaven,Christis quoted,“ButJesusbeheldthem(He wassayinglistencarefully),andsaidto them,withmenthisisimpossible;but withGodallthingsarepossible.”Who elseintheuniversecanmakeastatementlikethisandbackitup?Toknow Godpersonally,westudyandpraythat wemightunderstandmoreaboutwho Heis.
Sincechildhood,we’velearnedthere isnothingHecannotdo,asJeremiah 32:7remindsus,“AhLordGod!Behold,Thouhastmadetheheavenand theearthbyThygreatpowerand stretchedoutarm,andthereisnothing toodifficultforThee.”Thegreatest titleandattributethatisreservedonly fortheGodoftheBibleisOmnipotent whichmeansHehasunlimitedauthorityandcontrol.AlongwithbeingOmniscient(knowingeverything),Omnipresent(beingeverywhereatonce), andOmnibenevolent(perfectloveand justice).It’sclearthereisnoonethat canbecomparedtoHissupremacythe sameasdarknesscanneverovercome thelight,butyoumaybesurprisedto knowthereareseveralthingsthatGod absolutelycannotdo.
Let’sbeginwiththefactthatGodcannotlie.Heisperfecttruthandhasneversaidanythingthatwasnottrue.His wordisHisoathwhichmeansifHe sayssomethingHepromisesHewill makeithappenonewayortheother. WhenGodmadeHispromisetoAbraham,sinceHehadnoonegreaterto swearby,HesworebyHimself,saying,“Iwillsurelyblessyouandmultiplyyourdescendants.”AndsoAbraham,afterwaitingpatiently,obtained thepromise.Today,weembraceHis promisesandreceivethembyfaith.To knowthatGodneverfailsgivesus
OurnextattributeisthatGodcannot change.Hecannotcontradicthimself: Hiswordandactionsmustalign, meaningHecannotspeakoractin waysthatgoagainsthisownestablishedprinciples.Godisfromthebeginningandwecannotfathomwhat theAlphaandOmegameanswithour mortalminds, butinallthattimeHe hasremained“perfectly”thesame. He iseternaltruthandatrillionyearsfrom nowhewillstillrepresentwhatHehas alwaysdeclared.Malachi3:6says,“I amtheLord,Ichangenot”whichis verygoodnewsifyouareHischild. Heavenisforeverandwecertainly wouldnotwantHimtochangeHis planslaterdowntheroad.Thisdivine consistencyisanothercharacteristic whichisuniquetoGodalone.
Thereareactuallyseveralmorethings thatweaddtothelist,suchas;God cannotallowthelostintoheaven.John 3:3says,“Jesusansweredandsaid untohim,Verily,verily,Isayuntothee, exceptamanbebornagain,hecannot seethekingdomofGod.”WealsorealizethatGodwillneverbreakapromise,noonecanstopHisdecisions,His truthcanneverpassaway,Hislaws andcommandmentscannotbenegotiated,andHecannotcompromisewith sin,andHecannotbetemptedbyevil. James1:13declares,“Letnoperson saywhentheyaretempted,Iam temptedofGod:forGodcannotbe temptedwithevil,neitherdoesHe temptanyone.”
GodlivesuptoHisstandardsandprinciples.Heistheultimateexampleof howwearealsotowalkintheintegrity andessenceofHiswisdom.Thisis howabidinginHisSpiritandbeing awareofHisconstantpresenceisthe mostimportantaspectofourrelationshipwithHim.Weoftenhearcommentsabouthownooneisperfectand weallsinwhendiscussingmanifesting HisnatureandbeingholyasHeisholy.Nonetheless, couldthesestatements simplybedefensiveexcusesforremainingthesameandnotgivingmore efforttobelikeHim?Hisperfection shouldinspireandincreaseourdesire todemonstratebeingareflectionof Jesus.Theconvictingtruthisthatwe canbeasdeterminedtobefilledwith Himaswewanttobe.
