Volume 61, Edition 52, Monday, May 6, 2024 The Howe Hall of Honor is always one of the most special events of the entire year. This year was no different. Jim Fryar being back in Howe was pretty special as he and his wife Connie cultivated a community that bonded through a really good football program. I’ve always said that the best community developer is a dang good head football coach. But playing for Fryar and those that he hired to coach us in middle school, there’s one thing that stands out that is different when swapping war stories with other former players from other towns. In all the time I was coached in the Jim Fryar/Joey McQueen era, not once did I hear either of them or any of their coaches cuss or swear at any player or at any time in general. In the movies, and in common culture, it is believed that coaches dog-cuss their players to “train” them to do what they want them to do. My experience was just the opposite. Our coaches, while being strict and highly disciplinarians, also loved us and even told us that. It was tough love many times, but love it certainly was. Coach Fryar and the Dogs’ success in 1985 certainly changed the trajectory of my life. If it weren’t for that season, I could be the owner of a publication in some other town. Howe Bout Them Dogs! On Friday morning, the Howe Area Chamber of Commerce announced that due to impending weather, the 38th Annual Founders Day Festival would be postponed until June 15, 2024. At the time of the announcement, the weather forecast showed rain during the event and thunderstorms soon afterwards. However, the weather on Saturday was overcast

and would have been fine for the festival. On June 15, Howe will continue with all events such as the hot dog eating contest by Don’s Smokehouse along with the dunk tank by HIT Roof & Exteriors, the kid train, and turkey legs, and sausage-on-astick. June 15 will be a rain or shine event.

Two individuals that made a significant impact on Howe, Texas came back Friday night for an induction into the Howe Hall of Honor. LeAndra Beckemeyer and Jim Fryar gave speeches that carried a similar tune of the specialness of Howe, Texas,

and the people here. “I was a city girl and didn’t realize that this gem that was out here in Howe was going to be the place that I miss the most. And I do, truly,” said Beckemeyer. “There was no place that we ever lived while
