A week of old man winter One of our readers on Harrell Road reached out to us last week after reading about our hen-laying paragraph in this column last week. She said they have the same issue with their hens not laying eggs for five months. She indicated that they used to make their own feed before switching to store branded feed from Orscheln in Sherman.

That’s when their hens stopped laying eggs. Upon returning to their own feed, low and behold the egg laying returned. ***** The mainstream media is a battlefield full of mirrors. The importance of having a local news publication that is not controlled by corporations controlled by government entities (or vice versa) is very important.

The truth is very hard for some to hear due to the decades of deception.

We’re the only ones I know of that called out “Russian collusion” as just another mirror on the field. We’ve lost friends over it. But the truth must be told despite ridicule.

There is a war against us, the people...whether we identify ourselves as Republicans or Democrats, we better get together. ***** Our US Rep. Pat Fallon has the following Facebook ad, “Spending is out of control! Follow me to learn more about policies that Congress can enact to lower the debt and balance the budget!!” He voted to send $40,000,000,000 to Ukraine.

Cort Myrick The field got heavier on Friday as there are now three vying for Mayor of Howe after the city not having held a contested election in 21 years. Cort Myrick threw his hat in the ring with a Friday his announcement on Facebook. He joins incumbent Bill French and fellow challenger Karla McDonald.

Howe beats Gunter in five overtimes, 58-54 Longtime formerhead coach says it’s most likely a Howe school record Expect the unexpected when the Howe Bulldogs and the Gunter Tigers meet on the basketball court. Over the last three seasons, there have been numerous last-second buzzer beaters, hand gestures, and fans escorted out of the game. Saturday night saw all of that in a 58-54 win for Howe that took five overtimes. Former Howe Head Coach Tim Rose, who spent 24 seasons leading the Bulldogs, says it is most likely a record.

Lady Bulldogs split week with loss at Blue Ridge and win versus Gunter

The Howe Lady Bulldogs (12-17, 5-6) are a win away from clinching a playoff spot. The winner of the Tuesday matchup with Leonard will determine which of the two teams will represent District 11 as the fourth and final seed. The game will be broadcast live on HoweEnterprise.com and on YouTube at this link.

Howe’s game with Gunter was originally scheduled for Tuesday night, but the ice storm pushed it to Saturday night. Howe kept it close with Gunter throughout the contest, but the Lady Tigers pulled away at the end for the 46-39 win.

Forsythe challenged his players with a phrase from The Last Dance—the story of Michael Jordan.

“Our repeating phrase was ‘if you want to play that way, then play that way’,” said Forsthye. “Meaning if you want to win, then play that way. I repeated it over and over before the game, during timeouts, and between overtimes.”

They certainly played that way down the stretch as they trailed 28-22 heading into the fourth period. Gunter had no answer for Howe junior Jacob Campbell who had a game-leading 28 points and 10 rebounds. The only trick in the Tiger back pack was an arsenal of 3-pointers in which they hit 12 of them on the night giving them 36 of their 54 points on 3-bombs.

Howe trailed 36-35 with one second left in regulation when Campbell was fouled and went to the line. He tied the game on a free throw but missed his second shot that sent the game into overtime. With 13 seconds left in overtime and Howe trailing 39-38, Kaleb Taylor was fouled and hit his first free throw which tied the game.

He missed his second shot which left it tied. Campbell tried a buzzer beater jumper from the left wing, but it was no good and the game went to double overtime.

Each head coach went into stall mode once taking a lead which milked the clock throughout the overtimes. Trailing 43-41 with time expiring, Camp-

Campbell’s free throw was short, and the game went to triple overtime.

With the game tied at 48, Gunter wasted most of the final two minutes to play for the final shot. It appeared that the Tigers would win the game, but Jackson Buckholder missed a layup as time expired and the game went to quadruple overtime.

Howe trailed 51-50 with under a minute left when Campbell drove the lane, nearly lost the ball out of bounds but recovered for the go-ahead bucket with two seconds left. Taylor was called for a foul which sent Brock Boddie to the line where he tied the game on the first free throw at 52-52.

Myrick’s announcement Friday on Facebook stated, “Today I am officially announcing my candidacy for Mayor of Howe. I love our town and want to ensure that it has a bright future ahead for our children and grandchildren. I will work to build relationships that will allow us to fix our infrastructure issues so that we can manage our growth without being taken advantage of by big developers. I will manage our growth in a way that allows our city to manage it's growth while maintaining it's small town charm.”

Myrick contributed the following bio: My name is Cort Myrick, I am the proud father of six beautiful children and love raising them in this wonderful community. I am running for mayor of Howe to bring a spirit of servant leadership and transparency to our city’s administration.

I was born and raised in the Texas panhandle, growing up in the company house of a grain elevator that sat along Highway 287 in between Stratford and Dumas. After graduating, I in-

dulged the wanderlust that only the Great Plains can inspire. I did quite a few things, visited a quite a few states, travelled through Europe and even operated a forklift at Pearl Harbor for a time, but Texas was always my home.

I have an associates degree in Architectural CAD, a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and operate my own construction inspection business.

My wife and I have been youth leaders in the Howe Methodist Church and have sought to model the fruits of the spirit and service to all the young people in our lives. I currently serve as the volunteer leader for the Juniors of Howe’s own Girl Scout Troop #3698 (if you want cookies, let me know). I am the president of the board for The Rehabilitation Center and serve on the board of the Sherman Public Library.

Howe has been a wonderful place to raise our kids. I want to help make it even better for the generations to come. My pledge is to be a voice for the people in this community, to make our city a better partner to our excellent school district and to manage our future growth in a responsible way that maintains our small town charm.

Chamber’s Howe Hump Day pushed back to this Wednesday

Due to last week’s weather, the Howe Area Chamber of Commerce pushed back the second Howe Hump Day to this Wednesday, Feb., 8. They are inviting all chamber members and local businesses to participate in the monthly event to network with other businesses.

Lacey Tucker of Fairway Independent Mortgage - The Wood Group will host and sponsor the event and provide breakfast and beverages. Her business will be recognized as the February Business of the Month.

City holds council meeting during ice storm, approves spending for ambulance, tackle truck parking at FM 902 bridge Despite City Hall being closed on Tuesday, the city council proceeded with a special called meeting that was posted Friday, January 27.

The council approved an ordinance establishing an no-parking zone at the intersections of US. Highway 75 and State Highway 902 (Farmers Market 902) which prohibits parking in any area inside the east and west service roads. The ordinance authorizes the

city to post No Parking and TowAway Zone signs with fines marked to not exceed $500 per occurrence.

The council then acted upon a lease/ purchae agreement between the City of Howe and Independent Financial to purchase up to two ambulances in the amount not to exceed $180,000. They authorized City Administrator Jeff Stanley to execute and sign all documents pertaining to the purchase.

Texoma Patriots to host Texas Education 911 Rally at Courthouse On Monday, Feb. 13 at 6:30 pm, the Texoma Patriots are hosting a Texas Education 911 Tour to “Take Back Texas Schools.” The event will take place at the Grayson County Courthouse in the Assembly Room at 100 W. Houston Street in Sherman.

Texas Education 911 is a movement initiated by concerned parents and citizens all across Texas, to urgently fix Texas Public Schools through legislation to protect children, parental rights, and conservative values.

Lee Spiller began working at the Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) in Texas in 1997. Currently serving as the Texas commission’s executive director, Spiller has served on the front lines in the battle against psychiatric abuse in the state by investigating and exposing the psychiatric industry’s corruption and systemic malfeasance. To date, his work is credited for leading to the closure of 172 psychiatric institutions and a 50 percent reduction in psychiatric drugging of foster children. Spiller’s activism within state government has directly led to the passage of dozens of state laws to suppress the psychiatric industry’s unscrupulous activities.

They state that parents must be recognized as the primary and final authority in all matters. School districts that violate the law or parental rights must have consequences. Collecting data and making money off of our children must be illegal. Teachers must be focused on the basics of reading, writing, math, and science. Classrooms must be safe for teachers. No more sexualization, indoctrination, or surveys.

Texas Education 911 Rallies are designed to show Texas legislators that they must fix education now. The rallies are also for learning what is happening in public schools (big and small) and who is making money off of children. Every day people can make worldly changes.

Melissa Beckett is a mom of three boys (20, 16, and four years old) who volunteers her time as a parent advocate in education. As a parent advocate, Melissa strives to aid parents in asserting their God-given inalienable rights as the primary decision makers for their children, especially as it relates to the education system. Melissa is also coordinator for the Texas Education 911 grassroots parent and community-led movement to urgently fix Texas schools in the 2023 legislative session. Many things need to change in Texas Education and Melissa is committed to making sure Texas Parents are properly represented, and respected, in any legislative efforts this coming session.

Robert Leon Williams, 1939-2023 Robert Leon Williams -dedicated husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend -passed away on January 27, 2023 at the age of 83.

Leon was born to Emma and Joe Williams on December 30, 1939 in Lamasco, Texas. He graduated from Sherman High School in 1958, where he played the trumpet in the Bearcat Band and was the first baseman on the baseball team. During high school, he met his wife to be, Linda Lair at Fairview Baptist Church, where they later married on June 7, 1958.

Leon attended Texas Tech University, where his Dad recruited him to come back to Sherman and join the family construction business, Williams and Williams, later to become Joe Williams and Sons, Inc. Many of the roadways throughout Sherman and Denison were constructed by the firm, along with performing site construction for many of the manufacturing plants, including the original Texas Instruments plant. They also constructed lakes and soil conservation dams throughout Texas and Oklahoma. Leon loved construction and amazingly worked full time for over 60 years, retiring at the age of 80.

Leon was very active in his Church, serving as an ordained Deacon in Fairview Baptist, Trinity Baptist, and First Baptist Howe. He loved teaching Junior High Boys in Bible Study, singing in the choir, and served on many committees in the Church. Leon was a faithful Christian servant leader who dedicated his life to the Church.

Leon was honored for 50 years of service as a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason this last November. Leon also served on the School Board of Howe Independent School District. He served on the Sherman Jaycees, Chamber of Commerce and various civic organizations throughout his career. Leon believed in serving and giving back!

Leon and his devoted wife, Linda were married for a wonderful 64 years -blessed with 4 children, 9 grandchildren, and 21 great grandchildren. Leon loved his family very much and so enjoyed spending time with family and friends. His humor and wit added so much fun to every gathering! Leon will be greatly missed!

Leon Williams Leon is survived by his wife, Linda Williams, son Jeff Williams and wife Karen of Arlington, daughter Daphne Williams Shadic and husband Jackie of Sherman, son Guy Williams and wife Kristy of Clover, South Carolina, son Mark Williams and wife Brittany of Denison; his sister, Leta Key and husband Charles of Azle; brother inlaw, Jerome Lair and wife Jeannie of Lufkin; 9 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins. Leon was preceded in death by his parents, Emma and Joe Williams, his brother Tom Ray Williams and many other loving relatives.

Pall bearers will be his grandsons, Jered Cunningham, Ryan Williams, Carson Williams, Rick O’Pry, Stephen Pollitte, Brandon Taylor, Terry Syler, and Justin Berthiaume. Honorary Pall Bearers are longtime friends Jack Norman, Alton Norman and David Bedgood.

Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life Service at First Baptist Church, 400 S. Travis Street, Sherman, Texas 75090, with visitation from 1 to 2pm and the service at 2 pm, Sunday, February 5, 2023. Burial service will follow at the Lamasco, Texas cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to First Baptist Church of Sherman and Home Hospice of Grayson County.

First Baptist Church Howe XYZ Program Will Be “Getting To Know You” Submitted— Thursday, Feb 9, 2023, The XYZ group of First Baptist Church Howe will meet in Fellowship Hall of the church. After a short business meeting, the program “Getting To Know You” will begin with sisters Barbara Welch and Emily Powell singing the song with that title.

The church has been blessed lately

with many new additions from all over Texas moving to Grayson County and moving their memberships to FBC Howe. So the program will continue with three sets of new members telling about themselves and why they chose or ended up in Howe.

Visitors are welcome to come and stay to eat after the program. By the way, XYZ, stands for eXtra Years of Zest, and is our Senior Citizens’ group.

John Kelly Richardson, 1936-2023 John Kelly Richardson, 86 year old Howe resident, went home to be with his Lord and Savior surrounded by family on January 28, 2023. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Howe.

John married Melba Young in June of 1957. They had two children, Kelly and Julie. He was widowed in 1964. He married Georgia Peterman Adkins on February 11, 1967. They have spent almost 56 years loving one another. Together they raised five children: Danny Adkins, Kelly Richardson, Delanna Adkins, Julie Richardson, and Marcy Richardson.

The last several years he enjoyed working on old cars and trucks, playing his guitar, listening to and singing country music. He loved watching his grandkids and great grandkids play sports. If there was an occasion for dancing, you would find him on the dance floor. He looked forward to every Saturday and the fellowship spent with Bruce, his son-in-law, and several friends.

Again, most of the clock was stalled before Jones broke the knot with a free throw to give Howe a 53-52 lead with 1:11 left. After a nice defensive play by Anthony Lowder and Noah Riley to force a steal, Austin Haley was fouled and sunk both foul shots to give Howe a 55-52 lead with 26 seconds remaining. Gunter, who had connected on 12 3-pointers fired up another with 15 seconds left, but was unsuccessful.

Gunter’s Max Holdge, however, made the rebound but missed the layup and then was called for a foul on Jones who went to the other end to make it 57-52 with 13 seconds left and virtually seal the victory.

Campbell’s 28 points led Howe with Jones and Riley cashing in with nine each. Other scorers were Haley (6), Taylor (3), and Lowder (2). Jones pulled down 15 rebounds.

Howe currently holds the fourth and final spot in district could clinch a playoff berth for the second consecutive year. Blue Ridge and Leonard area each a game-and-a-half behind Howe.

Howe will host Leonard on Tuesday in a hot contest. After Howe, Leonard will have Bonham and Pottsboro as their final two games. Blue Ride has Bonham, Pottsboro, and Bells. Howe, after Tuesday’s game with Leonard will only have Bonham left.

Appreciating every day and every hour I have a good friend that is seriously ill with late-stage cancer. When he was diagnosed about 2 years ago, he began to write and send a daily Dr. Billy Holland text thread to friends about his treatments, how he is doing, the weather, anything associated with astronomy, and a generous amount of philosophical thoughts.

His personality is that of a thinker who appreciates the beauty of simple things. As I have read his thoughts and was allowed to see into his soul, it has been such a blessing and encouragement to see the good work that God has been doing in his life. He has gone through a lot more discomfort and challenges than we know. He has always been an optimistic person and now even in his difficult moments, his light of love and hope cannot be hindered. The Bible mentions in Psalm 91:1-2 about finding a secret place with God where nothing or no one can penetrate, disturb, or threaten. It is a refuge where even though the storms may be intense and the violence of spiritual warfare rages all around us; we are safe and at peace in His presence.

When he writes about sitting next to the window in his recliner covered with several layers of blankets, those of us who are constantly on the go can hardly grasp the beauty of being still before God. When he allows us to enter into his world of simplicity with things such as watching the rabbits and squirrels running around the yard doing what they need to do to survive, we see the quiet analogy of how he is doing the same thing. He talks about the neighbor's dogs and cats and how he imagines their daily routines or things like watching the snowflakes falling and how as a child he loved to try to catch them on his tongue. He often mentions the importance of community and how we need to care about each other and not be consumed with the fast pace of life that we forget to live. Humility, meekness, and an attitude of gratitude help prevent haughtiness from gaining control.

And there is the frequent mention of the trinity as this is a reference to the awareness of God’s Spirit and the passionate desire to be in His will. To me, he is more than a survivor; he is a lighthouse. His lifestyle of sensitivity and compassionate lifestyle has always been a contrast from how the fastpaced world operates, and now that he has opened the door for us to get to know him on a more personal level, it's the Lord that is reminding us what walking in His Spirit actually means.

It’s fascinating to realize that when we are not feeling any pain and have the energy to do whatever we want, we do not think about what it would be like to be sick. When we hear about those who discover they have a terminal disease, we are sad and say a prayer, then off we go back to our busy lives and the carousel of what we believe is important. It's when WE receive a negative report that our merry-go-round comes to a stop. If there was ever a time in our lives to take the lantern of self-examination down the path into our soul, it would be then. When the distractions and clutter are removed we can make things right with everyone, especially God. Our perspective changes as our world is now different.

Beyond the reality that God is the ultimate authority, this does not mean that we do not have the opportunity to make critical choices. We can allow the feelings of hopelessness and fear to dictate our minds and hold us in depression, or we can see the glass half full and be humble and thankful for all the blessings and good things that God has given to us throughout our lives.

Instead of becoming bitter, we could invest our time into interceding for others.

My friend has always loved kayaking and admiring the beauty of God’s nature. He looks forward to going this spring and always includes at the end of his posts that he will see us creekside. He closes the thread the same way every day by encouraging everyone to find the stillness within God’s grace. His heart sings, he is grateful, and he is always wearing his sunglasses because God's love and mercy is shining on him so brightly.

Texas History Minute What is the cost of changing the world? For those who dare, it can everything in their life, for good or ill.

Heman Sweatt put everything on the Ken Bridges line for his bid to desegregate the University of Texas law school, an effort that changed civil rights laws forever.

Heman Marion Sweatt was born in Houston in December 1912. He was the fourth of seven children, and his parents were active and respected members of the community. His father, who had moved to Houston from Waxahachie in 1900 to work as a railroad mail clerk, encouraged his children to pursue an education. Ultimately, the six surviving children would all graduate from college. From an early age, Sweatt was idealistic and passionate about the cause of civil rights. He began attending meetings of the civil rights organization NAACP while still a youth. He attended segregated schools in Houston, as was the law at the time, and graduated high school in 1930.

He enrolled at Wiley College in Marshall and graduated with a bachelors degree in 1934. In 1936, he began teaching at a segregated school in Cleburne and even served as principal for a time. In 1937, he enrolled at the University of Michigan to study medicine. However, after a year, he returned to Houston where he worked for the post office. He married in 1940.

In 1946, he decided to go to law school, choosing the University of Texas because of its reputation. He easily met all the requirements . However, UT President Theophilus Painter consulted with Attorney General Grover Sellers about Sweatt’s admission. Sellers ordered that he be rejected because of his race. Sweatt and his attorneys sued in May 1946, arguing that the state was not protecting his equal rights under law as there were no law schools for African-Americans in Texas at the time. Courts ordered a new segregated law school be opened for African-Americans (at what ultimately became Texas Southern University), but Sweatt refused.

The new law school had none of the advantages of UT and was not even accredited. Sweatt and his attorneys argued that the law school experience was more than just a building. The experience, prestige, and level of education from some of the most prominent legal minds in Texas could not be replicated. The only way he could re-

ceive an equal education was to enroll in the white law school.

In the months after his first attempt to register and the endless court hearings, Sweatt was the victim of death threats and harassment daily. Phone calls, letters, and strangers on the street poured on him like a tidal wave. The pressures grew, and the stress began taking a toll on his health and his marriage. Despite the dangers and the personal cost, he realized that too much was at stake – not just for him but for all that followed him. The fight dragged on for years.

In 1950, the Supreme Court ruled in Sweatt vs. Painter that he had the right to enroll at the UT law school. He began classes in 1950. But the pressures had been too much. His health was poor, and he missed several weeks for an operation. And he and his wife divorced.

He dropped out of the law school in 1952. However, his personal sacrifices permanently opened the law for other minority students. It also helped set the legal precedent used to overturn segregation in all public schools in the Brown vs. Board of Education case two years later.

But leaving law school and the divorce was not the end of the journey for him.

Life often shows that when times seem the bleakest, a new chapter is about to begin. And so it was for Sweatt.

He moved forward, now going to Georgia where he enrolled in the Atlanta University Graduate School for Social Work, earning a masters degree by 1954. He began working for the Urban League, organizing voter registration drives and also with poverty and employment programs. Sweatt also became a professor, teaching classes at Atlanta University while working with the Urban League. He remarried in 1963, a happy union that produced two daughters. He retired from the Urban League in 1977. He died at his home in Atlanta in 1982 at age 69.

In the years after his death, scholars and jurists began to appreciate the importance of Sweatt’s stand. Today, African Americans and members of all races can enter the law school without harassment and enjoy careers in law.

In 1987, the University of Texas began the Heman Sweatt Symposium in Civil Rights, an annual conference specializing in civil rights issues held in his honor. In 2005, Travis County renamed the courts building where his initial hearings took place after Sweatt.

A scholarship for UT law students was also established in his memory.

Living with children A major American newspaper recently published a letter from a gentleman who, apparently speaking from personal exJohn Rosemond perience, claimed that attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a real disease and then extolled the benefits of the stimulant medications typically prescribed when the diagnosis is made. Effectively, said gentleman parroted the false narrative peddled by Big Pharma and Big Mental Health; meaning, he is mistaken.

First and foremost, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is not “real” in the same sense as leukemia or diabetes. The latter can be objectively verified and measured. Not so with ADHD. It is a concept, nothing more.

No test will reliably identify it. The diagnostic criteria are entirely subjective. Therefore, a person diagnosed as “having” ADHD does not “have” more than a diagnosis.

Practitioners and spokespersons for BP and BMH often refer to the “ADHD gene,” a theoretical entity that supposedly causes either “brain differences” or a “biochemical imbalance.” With apologies to individuals who have swallowed and are emotionally invested in these canards, no body of credible, replicated science has established a cause-effect relationship between any biological variable and the behaviors associated with an ADHD diagnosis. Oh, the powers that be talk about such cause-and-effect very convincingly, obviously, but they cannot produce consistent (if any) hard evidence.

The same is true of all psychiatric diagnoses, by the way. Yes, even bipolar disorder. Again, my apologies to those who need them.

The ADHD establishment, people with impressive capital letters after their names, claims that certain test results are associated with the behaviors in question. So? The pertinent is-

sue is whether these tests qualify as science, and the answer is they do not.

Having administered them, I assure the reader that they are largely superfluous to the diagnosis and are given, in large part, to create the illusion that something scientific is being done to arrive at it.

That brings us to the thorniest issue of all: ADHD medications. It is a fact that the pharmaceuticals in question have not reliably outperformed placebos in controlled clinical trials. They are, in other words, no better than placebos.

Nonetheless, it must be noted that concerning psychiatric diagnoses, placebos often “work.” The so-called “placebo effect” has been verified beyond question.

Furthermore, ADHD drugs do not produce the paradoxical effect of “slowing people down.” As central nervous system stimulants, they increase attention span (they do so for most folks who take them) and the simple truth is that when someone pays attention to a single task for a reasonable period of time, their activity level will be lower than when their attention is all over the map.

All that being said, the behaviors that define a diagnosis of ADHD—short attention span and its cascade—are indisputable. Given decades of research failing to definitively identify a biological cause, the most likely explanation lies with a combination of environment and maleness. People so diagnosed, and especially parents of ADHD children, tend to have a kneejerk PAR (pronounced agitation response) to that suggestion. Therefore, falsehoods rule.

Mainstream media's partisan and sloppy handling of the Trump-Russia collusion narrative has irreversibly damaged its credibility with the American public, according to an explosive, fourpart report by investigative journalist Jeff Gerth released Monday by the Columbia Journalism Review.

Gerth, who has reportedly been investigating the Russiagate journalistic debacle for the past two years, refers to the Times as existing within its "own bubble," writing that "the damage to the credibility of the Times and its peers persists, three years on, and is likely to take on new energy as the nation faces yet another election season animated by antagonism toward the press."

In part one of the series entitled "The press versus the president," Gerth comes out swinging, naming specific outlets that dropped the ball. "'Holy sh*t, Bob Mueller is not going to do it,' is how Dean Baquet, then the executive editor of the New York Times, described the moment his paper's readers realized Mueller was not going to pursue Trump's ouster," Gerth reports.

In part three, Gerth recounts how BuzzFeed News decided to publish the now debunked Steele Dossier, with then-editor Ben Smith deeming it "a journalist no-brainer," given how their outlet is a "slightly fringy place."

Despite Gerth's revelations and the withering quotes he collected from prominent media figures criticizing the reporting of outlets like The New York Times and The Washington Post, the Times remained unrepentant, maintaining its reporting and analysis regarding the discredited Russiagate narrative were always above reproach from the start.

In a statement to CJR, the Times touted the journalism awards it won for its Russiagate reporting, adding that it "thoroughly pursued credible claims, fact-checked, edited, and

Gerth's reporting highlights how adversarial the relationship between Donald Trump and the mainstream media was, even before he ascended to the White House back in 2016. He recalls how the public used to trust the news, credibility that has now been largely squandered, he contends, by the debunking of the media's cherished Russiagate narrative.

Today, only 26% of Americans "trust news generally," according to the Reuters Institute's annual Digital News Report for 2022.

Trump sat for interviews with CJR over the past several years, adamantly proclaiming his innocence, calling the Russia probe a “witch hunt” or “hoax," according to Gerth.

"At times, Trump seemed almost to be toying with the press, offering spontaneous answers to questions about Russia that seemed to point to darker narratives," Gerth recounts. "When those storylines were authoritatively undercut, the follow-ups were downplayed or ignored."

Gerth "sought interviews," he writes, "often unsuccessfully, with scores of journalists — print, broadcast, and online — hoping they would cooperate with the same scrutiny they applied to Trump."

In researching his series, Gerth "pored through countless official documents, court records, books, and articles," he recalls, "a daunting task given that, over Mueller's tenure, there were more than half a million news stories concerning Trump and Russia or Mueller."

By Ben Whedon The House Judiciary Committee has issued subpoenas to FBI Director Christopher Wray and Attorney General Merrick Garland, demanding they provide the committee with documents pertaining to FVI investigations of school board meetings.

In October of 2021, Garland issued a memo highlighting "violent threats" against school officials amid a rise in parental opposition to the teaching of Critical Race Theory in public schools.

That memo, directing law enforcement to address the issue, attracted considerable scrutiny from conservatives who categorized it as part of the Biden administration's alleged "weaponization" of federal agencies.

The subpoena, which the Epoch Times reviewed, marks one of the first salvos by House Republicans against the administration as part of the bevy of investigations they have initiated against it. The committee set a March 1 deadline for the handover of the materials.

Lawmakers seek all documents and communications in connection with the FBI's "EDUOFFICIALS" threat tag and any investigations stemming from it. They further indicated that the subpoena is "continuing in nature" and that lawmakers expect the agency to provide them with relevant materials not yet created should more develop.

Jordan previously warned Garland in midJanuary that the he might face such a subpoena should he not cooperate House Republican demands for information.

In August of 2022, Jordan indicated that whistleblowers from within the FBI had revealed more than two dozen probes of parents who had voiced opposition to school policies. The bevy of FBI whistleblowers came amid mounting allegations of political bias in the wake of the FBI's Aug. 8, 2022, raid on former President Donald Trump's Mar-aLago estate.

The bureau faced several other whistleblower reports about myriad bias issues even prior to that event.

The U.S. military popped the balloon Saturday over the Atlantic Ocean after it traversed the continental United States for several days last week, including over sensitive military sites, according to The Associated Press.

The U.S. Navy and Coast Guard began a recovery operation for the balloon on Saturday, but it is unclear how long the mission will take.

Officials plan on analyzing the recovered Chinese equipment in the balloon, which fell in about 47 feet of water about six miles off the coast.

"This surveillance balloon purposely traversed the United States and Canada, and we are confident it was seeking to monitor sensitive military sites," a senior Defense Department official said.

Emergency withdrawals of 401(k) plans surge amid economic turmoil

By Just the News staff A high number of Americans drew on their 401(k) retirement plans in 2022 amid economic turmoil and rising costs around the country, according to one investment firm's data.

Nearly 3% of 401(k) holders with the Vanguard Group pulled cash on their plans in 2022, according to the Wall Street Journal, up from

2.1% the prior year and "a prepandemic average of about 2%."

The investment company told the Journal that "medical bills, eviction or foreclosure" were helping to drive the surge.

Fiona Greig, the global head of investor research and policy at Vanguard, said in a LinkedIn post that "increasing financial stress, rule changes, reductions in red tape, and the increase in autoenrollment" are also

helping to drive the spike in withdrawals.

Relaxations on withdrawal penalties, including amid the pandemic in 2020, have also helped drive up cashouts.

Fidelity Investment, meanwhile, reports that "about 2.4% of plan participants, or roughly 716,000 workers, tapped their retirement savings in 2022 to prevent hardships, a 26% increase over the prior year," according to the Journal.

By Natalia Mittelstadt A vaccinated Army pilot, who was reprimanded after his initial hesitation to receive the COVID-19 vaccination, is still being denied promotion and might not be able to retire, while a woman who allegedly sexually harassed him at a military medical clinic retains her employment.

Jessica Hill-Budge, the wife of Chief Warrant Officer 3 Brandon Budge in the 7th Infantry Division's 16th Combat Aviation Brigade, told Just the News on Thursday that her husband is still being denied promotion due to his initial hesitancy about getting the COVID vaccine and may be unable to retire next year — despite the rescinding of the military's vaccine mandate.

Shortly before Budge got the vaccine, a medic at the Winder Family Medicine Clinic, part of the Madigan Army Medical Center at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash., falsified his records without his knowledge to show that he had received the COVID vaccine. Budge was investigated over the falsified records, but the investigation, which concluded in November 2021, didn't consider his evidence or witness testimony, according to his wife.

In December 2021, Budge received a General Officer Memorandum of Reprimand (GOMOR) for behavior unbecoming of an officer after getting a

"flag" (Suspend Favorable Personnel Actions) in a referred Officer Evaluation Report. The "flag" prevents Budge from receiving a promotion or retiring, and the following February, when Budge was due to receive a promotion to Chief Warrant Officer 4, he was denied.

The 7th Infantry Division previously told Just the News that they couldn't provide any details on the investigation into Budge because it's privileged information.

In April 2022, a Flying Evaluation Board, which was to determine whether Budge could continue flying, exonerated him regarding the falsified vaccine records. Despite this, Budge's chain of command still wasn't allowing him to fly, HillBudge said. He was finally allowed to resume his training to fly this week for the first time in a year and a half.

During the same period as the flap over the vaccine records, Budge reported that a woman who worked at the Winder Family Medicine Clinic had allegedly sexually harassed him for more than three years, HillBudge told Just the News. The woman allegedly tried to show Budge nude pictures of herself when he was at the clinic, and she obtained his phone number from his files to contact him. She also openly expressed a desire to make Budge "pay" for resisting her unwanted advances, according to his wife.

In August 2021, Budge told his commander

about the harassment, but he was called a liar, his wife said. According to Army statutes, Budge's chain of command must create an "unrestricted report" when there is harassment, but they didn't, and instead shamed and belittled him, Hill-Budge alleged. As a result, Budge filed a bullying and hazing complaint with the Department of Defense Office of Inspector General.

In the meantime, Budge's alleged harasser received a promotion, and shortly thereafter, in January 2022, Budge filed an official complaint against her with the inspector general, according to Hill -Budge. The complaint alleged that the woman sexually harassed Budge and violated the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) by sharing his medical information.

In October 2022, an investigation by the DOD inspector general substantiated Budge's sexual harassment complaint, and the accused woman admitted to the investigators having other people give her Budge's information from his records, according to Hill-Budge.

The woman still works at the clinic, however, despite the findings, according to Hill-Budge, so Budge has been paying out of pocket to fly to another Army clinic in Alabama for the last two years.
