What a pillar he was to the community. This world needs more Dick Smithwicks. ***** Some chicken farmers across the country are taking to social media claiming they have identified Tractor Supply’s “Producer’s Pride” feed causing their chickens to stop laying eggs. One farmer claims her chickens haven’t laid eggs since September, but one chicken that got out of its pen and away from the feed began to lay eggs recently. Who knows. ***** Over 40 years ago current City Councilman Dale Rideout was defeated by RL Cate. Now Rideout will run against Cate’s grandson Michael Hill in the May election. Three Howe FFA students did very well at the Fort Worth Stock Show last weekend. Shelbee Taylor received Reserve Champion Junior Polled Hereford in the Intermediate Division. Jordan Brunner placed fourth in class with her MaineAnjou Heifer. Kendall Griffin also placed fourth in class with her ORB Heifer.

Howe to have mayor race for the first time in 21 years The City of Howe hasn’t had a mayor election since Diane Walsh defeated Carrie Waller in May of 2002 by a vote count of 145-85. Since Walsh’s initial election, she ran unopposed the following year and Howe has seen Mike Jones (2005-2008), Jeff Stanley (2009-2019), and Bill French (2019current) run unopposed in each election cycle since. French, who is currently Howe’s 36th mayor since the city’s incorporation in 1884, took that position in 2019 election when Stanley suddenly resigned after the election. Instead of Mayor Pro-Tem Sam Haigis filling the vacated seat, Stanley recommended French as mayor which the council approved. After the state then forced a special election, French ran unopposed which cancelled the election and left him as mayor. He ran unopposed again in 2021.
