This world needs more Dick Smithwicks. ***** Some chicken farmers across the country are taking to social media claiming they have identified Tractor Supply’s “Producer’s Pride” feed causing their chickens to stop laying eggs. One farmer claims her chickens haven’t laid eggs since September, but one chicken that got out of its pen and away from the feed began to lay eggs recently. Who knows. ***** Over 40 years ago current City Councilman Dale Rideout was defeated by RL Cate. Now Rideout will run against Cate’s grandson Michael Hill in the May election.

Howe to have mayor race for the first time in 21 years The City of Howe hasn’t had a mayor election since Diane Walsh defeated Carrie Waller in May of 2002 by a vote count of 145-85. Since Walsh’s initial election, she ran unopposed the following year and Howe has seen Mike Jones (2005-2008), Jeff Stanley (2009-2019), and Bill French (2019current) run unopposed in each election cycle since. After the state then forced a special election, French ran unopposed which cancelled the election and left him as mayor. He ran unopposed again in 2021.

Lady Bulldogs fall to Pottsboro, Bells

The Howe Lady Bulldogs (11-16, 4-5) took on two of the toughest teams in district last week in Pottsboro and Bells. Howe couldn’t get on track at home against the Lady Cardinals who are undefeated in district play at 10-0.

The Lady Bulldogs with the 40-23 loss fell to a district record of 4-4.

On Friday, Howe traveled to Bells and put up a fight before finally being defeated by a 45-38 score which moved Howe’s district record to 4-5 but still two games ahead of Leonard for the fourth seed which is a playoff qualifying seed.

the Howe Bulldogs (12-9, 4-4) found themselves trailing by four to Pottsboro with 1:15 left in the game. But The Dogs’ leading scorer Jacob Campbell drew a foul and connected on both foul shots to get the game within a bucket at 39-37 in the game that was moved up due to expected bad weather. Campbell then drew a foul on the defensive side of the floor with 38 second remaining which gave the Dogs a chance to tie. And that is what happened when post Cooper Jones put if off the glass left handed to make it 3939. Pottsboro turned the ball over on an inbounds play that took too much time with 5.5 second remaining in the game. Campbell made a drive on the left side of the lane which drew a foul and sent him to the line to try and win the game with only two second left.

Campbell hit the first free throw which put Howe up 40-39, then missed the second foul shot which was rebounded and heaved for a last-second prayer.

Pottsboro Head Coach Tyler White attempted to call a timeout before time expired, but was unsuccessful which left Pottsboro fans, players, and coaches furious with the officials.

Howe led throughout the game even holding a 20-5 lead at one point in the early parts of the second period. But midway through the fourth, the Cardinals fought all the way back to take their first lead at 37-35 with three minutes left in the game.

Howe was led by Campbell’s 19 points and Noah Riley’s 10 rebounds.

Two citizens also filed to run for city council as Michael Hill and Billie Ingram will challenge current councilmen Rod Gross and Dale Rideout, both of which were appointed to the council. The last city council election in Howe took place in 2018 when Lisa Tibbets filed to run against incumbents Sam Haigis, Georgia Richardson, and Darren Foster. Howe also had a city council election in 2016 when Harvey Morris challenged the same three seats.

Howe and its citizens have given so much to my family and me; it is time for me to give back.

I desire to be the people’s mayor, a mayor that would offer transparency and collaboration with its entities and, most importantly, its citizens.

I hold a BS in Psychology from Grand Canyon University, graduating with the distinction Summa Cum Laude (i.e., top 5% of the class). In addition, I have certifications in human and life aspects, COVID-19 public and private care, gun violence, health and wellness, school counseling programs, youth violence, research, writing, publication, photography, and floral design. Awards I have received include Summa Cum Laude (i.e., top 5% of the class), the President’s List (multiple times), the Dean’s List, and several persistence scholarships for academic success.

Work Experience Currently, I am a Life Coach and Counselor and work locally in Private Practice; I am seeking licensure for Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in mental health counseling.

Michael Hill for city council— My name is Michael Hill and I have served the City of Howe at the police department since 2009. Shortly after, my wife Michelle and I became residents of Howe in 2013 when we decided to make Howe their home.

During my time with the Howe Police Department, I was placed in supervisory roles at the rank of sergeant, lieutenant, and interim chief. One of my duties included being the public information officer where I worked directly with the public and the media. I also received countless hours of leadership training from command staff as well as accredited training courses attended during which I received my advanced Peace Officer certification.

I continued to serve the citizens of Howe at the city police department until 2018, when I moved over to the Howe Independent School District Police Department where I currently serve the citizens of Howe and the citizens in the school district by ensuring the safety of our schools, students, and staff.

I would be honored to follow in my late grandfather RL Cate’s, footsteps who served on the City Council from 1970-72, 1973-1983 by running for the Howe City Council. I truly believe I can bring the changes needed for the betterment of Howe and fight for transparency that is expected from a governing body. I hope to continue to serve the citizens of Howe as a member of the city council.

Billie Ingram for city council— Hi, my name is Billie Ingram and I would like to introduce myself for those that might not know me very well.

Born and raised Texan, I grew up in Westminster, attended K-12 and graduated from Van Alstyne in 2003.

My family and I moved to Howe in 2012. My wife and I have been married since 2007. We began dating in 2001, in high school. We have three children and are licensed foster parents in Texas. Our oldest is 15 and a freshman. We have a 12 year old 7th grade girl and a 3 year old girl that tells us all what to do.

When my oldest started playing little league, I got involved in helping with youth sports in Howe and have coached baseball, football and basketball, while also volunteering to help girls’ softball and volleyball. I served the last three years on the Howe Youth Baseball board. I look forward to continuing in serving my community in a leadership role on the city council.

At the age of 19, I was hired by a police department in a suburb of Dallas and spent 8.5 years serving that community while getting a front row seat to the intricacies of local government.

While at the PD, I was elected to be on the board of directors of the municipal jail association of Texas. Our primary function was working with legislators to write, introduce and pass laws that would help guarantee better and more thorough training for officers employed by municipal jails and detention centers. I have worked in the private sector since 2012, with experience in continuous improvement and supervisory roles that focus on increasing efficiency and productivity while decreasing costs and managing expenses.

I am currently employed with an automotive manufacturer that makes components and subassemblies for medium and heavy duty semi-trucks.

I pride myself on being a man of my

word, with character and integrity. I promise to lead by example when elected to the city council. I believe the government, at all levels, should work in selfless service of the people that they represent, forming a partnership to promote the best for everyone. We have a season of growth quickly approaching us in Howe and I believe I have the skill sets to help lead us into it while promoting involvement of all citizens to make this great little town even better. Texoma Patriots to meet Tuesday

The Texoma Patriots invite those interested to join them on Tuesday, January 31, at 7 pm. The speaker is Evan Sayet.

The meeting will take place at the American Legion James Adams Post 376, 293 Jay Road, in Van Alstyne.

Sayet’s talk is titled “The Woke Supremacy.”

Sayet is the nation’s leading conservative political comedian. In addition, he is a Hollywood writer, lecturer, satirist, author, and commentator. He was an inner-circle advisor to the Ted Cruz for President campaign, one of the featured speakers at the Million Mega March in Washington, and a speech writer for first candidate and President Trump.

Sayet authored the book KinderGarden Eden: How the Modern Liberal Thinks. His new work is The Woke Supremacy. Raised as a New York liberal, post 9-11 he rethought his political and social beliefs.

Andrew Breitbart said that Sayet’s Heritage Foundation Speech was ‘one of the five most important conservative speeches ever given.’ That speech was the foundation for this book. How did the song “Imagine” by John Lennon become the perfect symbol of liberal thinking? Why does Bruce Springsteen dub “pain” as the wages

Richard Meade ‘Dick’Smithwick, 1935-2023

Richard Meade ‘Dick’ Smithwick was born October 14, 1935 to Clarence Stultz Smithwick and Roma Routh Campbell Smithwick. He grew up in Richardson with his parents and his grandfather John Meade Campbell and Grandmother Elizabeth Haines Campbell on their farm on Campbell Road. He had an idyllic childhood there. His grandmother adored him and he adored her. He loved playing football in high school and was an All State Center for RHS. He went to Texas A&M College, Class of ’58, on a football scholarship with Paul ‘Bear’ Bryant. He arrived after the Junction incident and after playing two years he wanted to marry and Coach Bryant did not want his players to marry. He also wanted to become a Veterinarian which would take a great deal of study time. He chose Daisie and his DVM. He received his Veterinary Medicine degree in 1961 and came home to Richardson and built his first clinic and later a second clinic in Howe. He had a fabulous Veterinary Assistant that worked for him for 25 years, Chris Parks, whom he greatly appreciated. He loved his work and the animals and people he met for the next 50 odd years over multiple areacounties. After building the Howe practice in 1985 on their farm that Dick had farmed since the 70s in his spare time, he and Daisie moved from Allen, having raised their four children there, to Howe in 1995. It has been a wonderful and peaceful place to live.

Dick met the Lord when he was 12 years old and followed Him all his life. He was a positive influence on many people, especially clients who often became the closest of friends. If you picture an Oak Tree, it stands out—big and strong with deep roots and a very large canopy of leaves.

That describes Dick Smithwick. He hugged everybody, and cared about everybody and let them know it. He was security for his family, friends and clients. He showed Christian caring to his clients and their animals that the Lord gave him a special affinity to treat and his clients entrusted to him.

He was born to be a Veterinarian. He had fun growing up with lots of cousins who he and Daisie became especially close to and traveled with each year for 20+ years.

Oaks stand head and shoulders above the rest; cherished the world over as a symbol of wisdom, strength, and endurance. As Isaiah 61:3 states, “… they will be called Oaks of righteousness to display God’s Glory…”—for living in a way that pleases God by loving God, others and ourselves.

Dick led by example of this. He enjoyed singing in the choir, Harold Finney’s SS class, kibitzing with Sam Haigis, Leon Thornhill and Freddy Vestal and hundreds more, and a ‘few’ of Brother Roger’s sermons and just a ‘little’ of his humor. Dick was a big sports fan, loving Texas Aggie football especially. He was an avid outdoorsman enjoying packing and hunting and fly-fishing trips with good friends many times through the years.

As a young father, he also enjoyed Cowboy or Western polo on his big gelding– Big Blue.

Dick Smithwick Things have not been the same since July 17, 2017 when Dick collapsed and had to have open heart surgery.

He has always been his same sweet, fun-loving self, but these last few months have been more difficult. His daughters Lynn and Christy nearby have been a great loving support and Libby by phone and computer at a distance. The care, support and affection by Reliant Hospice, Dr. Saeed, and especially Misty, Dusty and Crystal have been most supportive and we are most grateful. Visiting Angels and 7 Sisters sent Angels that were unbelievably helpful and caring—without whom life would have been much harder. Through it all, he remained an Oak, true and loving, sweet and caring, always charming us all through it, giving us Joy! He has always been a blessing. Special friends and Angels loved on us and supported us throughout. We thank White Rock Stables and the Oddson family for their huge support five years ago as well as ongoing. The continued love and support from WRS Manager, Amelita. Glynn Williams and John Visage who were daily visitors 5 years ago and still.

Glynn for sharing all the old Colorado packing and hunting trip stories, and countless Blizzards each Sunday with Dick! Susan, Theresa, Cindy, Jean and Alton, Becky, Carin, Wayne Westbrook, and so many more for your love, visits, food, and more. Terry & Phillip Wildman for food and especially guitar and song with your visits.

Special visits from family and loved ones have been a special blessing: Jeannette Phariss, special friend of 66+ years, the Planks, Huffhines, Keagy, and Harrison families, and so many more. A special thank you to our son-in-law, Jerry Welch, for providing Dick the joy of staying on the land that he so loved allowing him to be with his animals and the surroundings he had enjoyed all of his life. Dick was the epitome of love to his family, friends, clients and anyone in need, Always ready with a massive hug, firm handshake and tender words from such a Gentle Giant. He was always ready with a quick story as he had a marvelous sense of humor and wit.

Dick’s children were his pride and joy.

They have all been a wonderful help always with so much love shown; Lynn and Christy having dealt closely with his most recent medical needs.

His six grandchildren have added ex-

tra pleasure to his life. Mitch, Jake, Samantha, Cody, Seth and Jorie. His one great grandchild, Derek, has been a constant source of something new to always learn about. A great pleasure and benefit in our lives was the Bible Study Group started by Bonnie and Bill Smith. The study was always rich, and accompanied with the traditional Baptist monthly dinner and dessert in one of our homes. Dot and Jim Huckaby, Freddy and Judy Vestal, Carolyn Cavender, Jean and Alton Norman were a friendly bunch with great bible knowledge. The most precious thing he had in this life was his wife Daisie, who he loved deeply for over 66 years. She was his soulmate and rock. Together they built an amazing life for one another, their kids, and grandkids, with so many truly amazing friends sprinkled in throughout their many trips, adventures, and living life to the very fullest. Our church family has been a constant source of support in prayer for us. We appreciate the care and personal attention by Casey Scoggins. Prayers from so many friends and loved ones have sustained

Dick was preceded in death by his parents Stultz and Roma Smithwick and his beloved son, Mitchell Meade Smithwick. He is survived by his wife Daisie; daughters Libby, Lynn, and Christy; their spouses Jo, Jerry, and Scott; grandchildren Mitch and son Derek, Jake, Samantha, Cody, Seth and Jorie; many loving cousins, friends, and clients that were like family.

MarkAnthony McGraw, 1958-2022 Summit Hill Elementary Top Dogs Mark Anthony McGraw of Columbus, Ohio passed away peacefully at Kobacker House on December 24, 2022. He was 63 years old. He is survived by his wife Michelle McGraw, son Thomas McGraw, daughter-inlaw Victoria McGraw-Rowe, as well as his beloved granddaughter Edith McGraw. He is additionally remembered by his mother Alice McGraw as well as siblings Pamela McGraw, Patricia Kay Sharkey, Karen Langford, Lorianna McGraw, and Michael McGraw, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is predeceased by his father Garnet McGraw and nephew Thor Rolbeicki.

Mark was born in Sherman, Texas where he lived most of his life. He married the love of his life Michelle Heath on August 17th, 1991. Mark’s great passion was in being a “Granddad” for his granddaughter, always willing to get on the floor to play with her. He was also devoted to his family and enjoyed gathering together and sharing stories. He enjoyed raising horses, particularly miniature horses that he loved to share as a source of delight, and collecting all sorts of Western memorabilia. In his early life, he was deeply involved in the Sherman Jaycees organization where he loved planning annual haunted houses. Mark was a long-

Trump proposes big changes to public education, saying it's been overtaken by 'Radical Left maniacs'

By Joseph Weber Continuing to craft a second generation of his policies, former President Donald Trump is proposing a dramatic change in the education sphere that would empower parents to elect and fire school principals.

"Our public schools have been taken over by the Radical Left maniacs," Trump said in a video announcement released late Thursday night.

Trump said the first step in his plan to "save American education" and restore power to parents would be to cut federal funding for any school or program pushing Critical Race Theory, gender ideology or other "inappropriate racial, sexual, or political content to children.

Trump, who has already formally launched his 2024 presidential reelection campaign, said he will, if elected, direct the departments of Justice and Education to open Civil Rights investigations into any school district that has engaged in race-based discrimination, including discrimination against Asian-Americans.

"The Marxism being preached in our schools is also totally hostile to JudeoChristian teachings, and in many ways, it is resembling an established new religion," Trump said in the roughly fourminute video. "For this reason, my administration will aggressively pursue potential violations of the Establishment Clause and the Free Exercise Clause of the Constitution. That’s very simple.

Trump also made a so-called "Day One" promise to remove "the radicals, zealots, and Marxists" who have infiltrated the Education Department.

He also outlined funding preferences and "favorable treatment" for all states and school districts that make the following education reforms: Abolish teacher tenure for grades K through 12 and adopt merit pay for highperforming ones. Cut the number of school administrators, including the "costly, divisive and unnecessary Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion bureaucracy."

Adopt a Parental Bill of Rights that includes complete curriculum transparency and a form of universal school choice.

Implement the direct election of school principals by the parents.

Howe men purchase Crossroads Service Center in VanAlstyne say they quickly come around after he tells them he worked for him.

“We’re keeping the prices as low as we can,” said Montgomery. “We don’t want all of his customers that have been paying a set price for all these years to be run off by new owners.”

Harris, aged 51, and Montgomery, aged 37 each Van Alstyne High School graduates reach different age groups within the community which also helps with relationships.

Two men originally from Van Alstyne but live in Howe have purchased Crossroads Service Center (formerly Crossroads Auto Center). Keith Harris and Jason Montgomery purchased the businesses from James Robert (Jim Bob) Wolfe (81) as of Jan. 1, 2023 and have been refurbishing the property inside and out.

Wolfe is a native of Van Alstyne and was a self-made success story by going from the cotton fields to college and air traffic control. After getting into the automotive industry with a partner and selling cars, he expanded into tires and service.

“He’s built this thing up from nothing over the past 30 something years and in a small town, people respect it and flock here from all over,” said Montgomery who worked for Wolfe 20 years ago while in high school. “He taught me a lot about business and gave me a lot of free reign to do a lot of stuff for him.”

Harris, who went to school with Wolfe’s daughters in Van Alstyne also got to know him and eventually became his go-to technician as Harris has a highly reputable background as a service technician over the years.

Harris and Montgomery have been friends for eight years through their kids’ friendship. Once Harris heard Wolfe might be willing to sell, he immediately called Montgomery to see if there was interest and there immediately was and they took off running with the idea.

Once change they made was to not sell cars as Wolfe will continue to do that at a location on Hodgins Road.

Therefore, Harris and Montgomery will focus on the auto service industry hence the name change to Crossroads Service Center.

“It’s really a cool dynamic on how this has worked out. Everything just fell into place,” said Harris. “Jim Bob put a lot into it and he wanted it to still have that same mentality of taking care of people and he wanted his clients to be taken care of.”

Montgomery says they have purchased new equipment and are still in the process of refurbishing the property. The office has been updated with

modern flooring, walls, and cabinets.

But beyond the upgrades, the meat and potatoes of the business is servicing import and domestic vehicles for repair with diagnostics on all. They feature oil changes and standard services such as brakes, belts, and hoses.

“We’re not really set to be pulling engines and transmissions. We want to be a quicker turnaround where we can get people in and out in one day,” said Montgomery. “We have stuff coming in off of a wrecker with a wheel falling off and we can get it put back together and on the road in the same day.”

Crossroads Service Center also sell new tires with over 900 in stock and say they have a brand new tire for just about anything that comes in. They get tires deliveries twice per day.

“We’ve got good equipment where we can rotate tires and balance them. We do tire repairs and flat repairs,” said Montgomery.

Perhaps the most intriguing concept of the business is the concierge service where they will be able to come get your vehicle while you’re at work and put it through a full service oil change, tire rotation, and even an inspection sticker, if needed. They then deliver the vehicle back in to your location.

“We just want to bring back to personalized service that Jim Bob used to do.

We used to go to the bank all the time and pick up ladies’ cars every week and even the city’s vehicles,” said Montgomery. “It’s just kind of lost and you don’t get that anywhere else.”

They say they deliver honest, quality service without selling you stuff you don’t need.

Harris has 30 years of experience at car dealerships including as service manager at David McDavid Acura and Lute Riley Honda. He was one of the top Acura service technicians in the nation and Master AFC for Acura.

He says both he and Montgomery will be working on the vehicles.

“We’re in the middle of everything,” said Harris.

According to Roy Reed of GraysonCountyScanner.com, the situation with TVC escalated January 16 of this year when they laid-off numerous employees. The website states the company is also under investigations for numerous allegations.

In October, Whitesboro cut ties with TVC to bring their EMS service inhouse. TVC provides service to Northeast Grayson County and parts of Fannin County. Their main operation is in Bells with a second location in Denison. Other than Howe, they also have placed an ambulance at Tioga Fire Department.

According to Reed, the allegations against the company are serious and could lead to the TVC’s closing.

Maybe we should let someone hold our mule “Hold my mule” is a figurative expression from the American South that means when a person is leading a mule and they need to go Dr. Billy Holland somewhere, or do something very important they will ask someone to hold their mule. Sometimes it meant they were going to enter into a confrontation be it a verbal or physical one, but in church settings where the members were not embarrassed to express their emotions, the phrase meant they were getting happy and praising the Lord or spending time at the altar crying out to God. Do churches still use altars? Do people still get happy?

When it comes to people expressing their worship, I’ve been in a lot of assemblies over the years and witnessed several worship styles. I was raised in a conservative Baptist church where I sang the wonderful hymns and later became a worship pastor for more “lively” groups such as Vineyard, Charismatic, Pentecostal, and Assembly of God churches. I love all styles.

I’ve written and recorded several albums of Christian music and wrote a book about worship, but whether we raise our hands or we are more reserved, God knows what we believe in our hearts.

Spiritual music is dear to my heart, and often I feel that God is speaking to me in a song. Powerful emotions well up inside and many times tears will flow as it seems the Lord is embracing me with His love. I will never forget a day back in the 80s, I was driving and listening to the radio when Steve Green began to sing “In God Alone” and I just started weeping. Among many others, I remember another song that is very special in my life and that is, “His blood” by Shirley Caesar.

If you’ve never heard these songs, I highly recommend them.

As a young minister, I used a small segment of “His Blood” as the intro for some of my teaching cassette tapes. You do remember cassettes, don’t you? Anyway, for those familiar with Shirley Caesar’s music, you know that she gives everything she has when she sings. She was known

around the world as the First Lady and the Queen of Gospel which included 17 Dove Awards, 10 Grammy’s, 12 Stellar awards, and forty albums. She would always say, “I’m called to be a preacher first, and a singer second!”

When you listen to her, you will know what she means.

One of Shirley’s songs is called, “Hold My Mule” where she tells a story about an 86-year-old man named John, who joined an ultra-conservative church where everything was dreadfully sophisticated and solemn. From the moment John began attending, his presence disturbed the reserved and comfortable congregation. He was such a positive and encouraging personality and would come in beaming with joy. As the sermon was being preached he would loudly exclaim amen and praise you Jesus with sincere enthusiasm. Everyone scoffed and raised their eyebrows in disapproval and when the deacons tried to intervene, they could not contain him. I’m reminded of the passage in Luke 19:40 when Jesus spoke out and said if these people keep silent, the stones will cry out in praise.

One day the deacons when to see John dressed in their finest and driving their big fancy car. They found him around back plowing his field with a mule. He saw them coming and said, “I know why you are here, you want me to stop worshiping my Jesus.” They replied, “John we don’t act like that in our church. There are dignitaries and many wealthy and important people in our midst and they have a reputation to protect. If you don’t stop shouting, dancing, and praising we are going ban you from our church.” With tears in his eyes, John said, “Well, then you’re going to have to put me out because I can’t hold my peace. Let me tell you why. Look at all that beautiful land that you just drove through. God gave me that land. Look at my children. God gave these blessings and they all love Him and have never given us any trouble. Look at me, I’m 86 years old. I’m still able to walk behind this old mule and harvest my crops and you don’t want me to show Jesus how much I love Him in your church?

Here, hold my mule, because I’m gonna sing and dance and shout and give thanks to God right now!”

Texas History Minute

Houston had long been an important city for Texas.

Businessmen like Jesse H. Jones helped make it an international center for commerce. He Ken Bridges had arrived in Texas as a young man and worked his way through thr ranks of his uncle’s Dallas-based lumber company before coming to Houston where he would soon invest in all sorts of businesses.

President Woodrow Wilson offered him a cabinet position at one point. By the 1920s, he came to own the Houston Chronicle, and his business holdings would only expand further. By the 1930s, his expertise would be recognized nationwide as he was called upon by the White House to combat the Great Depression.

By the early 1930s, he had added a radio station to his extensive lumber, real estate, and publishing holdings.

The Great Depression was hitting the nation hard, especially in the financial industry. Jones already served as president of the Houston-based National Bank of Commerce in 1931 when Public National Bank was in danger of failing. Jones bought the bank and added it to his holdings. Jones’s National Bank of Commerce would later merge with Texas National Bank to eventually become Texas Commerce Bank, one of the largest in Texas by the 1960s.

In 1932, President Herbert Hoover named Jones to the board of directors of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation, which attempted to steer funds to the largest banks, railroads, and manufacturers in the country to keep them from falling prey to the Depression. Jones managed hundreds of millions of dollars to try to stabilize the economy and keep some of the nation’s largest remaining employers from imploding. Even with this program, Jones criticized Hoover’s approach as too little to solve the problems of the Depression.

When Franklin D. Roosevelt was inaugurated as president in 1933, he appointed Jones as the chairman of the RFC. Roosevelt gave the RFC more money and more authority to rescue large businesses. He was initially responsible for $850 million (more than $19.5 billion in 2023 dollars) meant to bail out the nation’s surviving banks so businesses would have the money needed to restart operations and finance their debts. He helped save more than 2,000 banking corporations from collapse through the RFC. Jones did not just help businesses during the Depression. In the meantime, in 1937, Jones formed the Houston Endowment, which gave to charities

across the Houston area and set up scholarships at six universities across the country. He gave more than $1 million of his fortune (more than $21 million in 2023 dollars) initially to set up this charity.

Some commentators called Jones the second-most powerful man in the country after Roosevelt. He was so influential that Roosevelt briefly considered Jones as his vice-presidential running mate when he ran for an unprecedented third term in 1940. Instead, Roosevelt named Jones as Secretary of Commerce that September.

During World War II, Jones’s position was crucial for helping organize business and financing for war production.

Shortly after Roosevelt was sworn in for his fourth term, he asked Jones to step aside as commerce secretary in favor of now former Vice-President Henry Wallace. Jones did not enjoy being so unceremoniously pushed aside and publicly criticized Wallace’s qualifications. Nevertheless, Jones returned to Houston to resume his business activities. Now past 70, he maintained an active interest in Houston’s civic life. Working with a group of business leaders and politicians known as the “Suite 8F Group,” he continued his role in guiding Houston’s business future.

After he left Washington, he donated his entire salary from his years as commerce secretary and from the RFC to the Houston Endowment. In 1946, he was named to the board of Directors of Texas Medical Center and opened a new hospital, called the Jesse H. Jones Hospital, in his native Robertson County, Tennessee, in 1956. He also donated more than $1 million in 1956 ($11 million in 2023 dollars) for the construction of a women’s dormitory at Rice University, named Mary Jones College after his wife.

He died quietly at his home in Houston in 1956. Even after his death, Jones remained a widely respected figure in the Houston area. In 1964, the National Bank of Commerce merged with Texas National Bank to become Texas Commerce Bank, the largest in the state, eventually becoming part of Chase Bank in the 1990s. In 1966, Jesse H. Jones Hall, a multi-million dollar amphitheater, was completed as the home of the Houston Symphony Orchestra. In 1976, the Jesse H. Jones building became the home of the Houston Public Library. In 1992, Baylor University established the Jesse H. Jones Library in his honor. The Houston Chronicle by the early 2000s had become the third-largest newspaper in the country, and the Goodfellows program that Jones started now reaches tens of thousands of children each year.

Living with children

“What went wrong, John?” asked a fellow boomer who, like many folks my age, are dismayed at what has hapJohn Rosemond pened within the American family over our lifetimes.

Specifically, we have seen the end of mere childrearing and the consequences to all concerned of this new and very harmful thing called “parenting.”

In the 1960s, the forces of cultural deconstruction began demonizing all forms of traditional authority, including authority in/of the workplace, military, classroom teacher, and Constitutional government. Arguably the most significant demonization involved the authority of parents.

The two best-selling parenting authorities of the late ‘60s and ‘70s, family counselor Dorothy Briggs and psychologist Thomas Gordon, published books in which they advocated for families being democratic. They meant that children, even children as young as two or three, should have an equal voice in family matters. No, I’m not exaggerating. Read their books.

Unless you’re a baby boomer, you probably don’t notice how radical parenting advice of that sort has played out. Today’s parents are noticeably uncomfortable with being authority figures, for example. Note the ubiquity of parents who talk to their kids as if they are peers. They explain themselves to their children as if they are asking their approval. They “problem solve” with their kids, and they are especially diligent about asking their opinions, of course. Anything less is sure to destroy a child’s sense of being the most important human to ever live as well as any chance he will ever have at becoming the first surgeon to perform a successful brain transplant. The operative word is “collaboration.”

piece of the new way. In public, it’s a form of virtue-signaling.

For example, two parents pushing a toddler in a shopping cart walk into the non-GMO produce aisle of my default grocery. They look serious, and do they ever sound earnest. They’re asking the child “Where do you want to go next?” and “Do you want to go down this aisle or that one?” and “What would you like for supper tonight?” and “Are you ready to go home now?” and “Which one of us should carry you?”

Why are they asking patronizing questions of that sort of a toddler? The answer of course is they are identifying themselves as parents who are mindfully and intensely sensitive to their child’s feelings, which is utmost to being collaborative.

Bless their big hearts, parenting progressives of that ilk don’t realize they are setting precedents that are almost certain to come around and haunt them. Giving a young child the impression that nothing happens that is not to his liking, that he must approve of what his parents are doing, that they await and depend upon that approval to know they are doing the right thing, and so on, is almost certain to result in a child who refuses to obey instructions, incessant arguments, and tantrums. Let us not overlook the tantrums.

By Greg Piper Undercover video that purportedly shows a Pfizer executive explaining the company's "directed evolution" plan to keep COVID-19 a "cash cow," then furiously backpedaling when Project Veritas founder James O'Keefe exposes the ruse, has drawn intense curiosity from members of Congress but intermittent Big Tech throttling and a partial media blackout.

Despite the fact that the figure identified as Jordon Walker belatedly called himself a "liar … trying to impress a person on a date," played the race card in requesting police involvement, and physically attacked O'Keefe and the film crew, a prominent tabloid inexplicably removed its article on the sting.

Sen. Ron Johnson (RWisc.) demanded a congressional investigation of "vaccine manufacturers and the entire COVID vaccine approval process," while Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) asked Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla to explain the company's actual or possible plans to mutate SARS-CoV-2 and any related discussions with industry peers or government officials.

The FDA declined either to answer whether it was following up with Pfizer for an explanation of the figure's comments or give the agency's interpretation of the video, telling Just the News to contact Pfizer, which has not responded to queries going back to Thursday afternoon.

Search engines are giving unexpected results for the controversy. Neither Google nor privacyfocused Brave, which last year poached users upset with DuckDuckGo's pledge to bury Russian "disinformation," returned first-page results from Project Veritas itself in Just the News searches for "project veritas pfizer."

Both surface purported fact-checks of the video and the trickle of mainstream media coverage in The Hill and local media, and both included an October 2021 fact-check of an earlier Project Veritas video about Pfizer.

Newsweek's fact-check begins by aiming to discredit Project Veritas based on previous mainstream media fact-checks and then analyzes it line by line, at one point

The much-derided board drew comparisons to the Ministry of Truth from George Orwell's dystopian novel "1984." Announced in April 2022, DHS disbanded the panel in August of that year.

Jankowicz herself attracted scrutiny for having previously labeled opponents of the teaching of Critical Race Theory as "disinformers," fueling fears that the board could move aggressively to vilify and silence political opposition.

Jordan cited a prior email from Garcia to other members of the NSBA indicating that the organization had "been engaged with the White House and Department of Education" prior to an order from Attorney General Merrick Garland — prompted by a letter from the NSBA — to federal law enforcement to investigate the "disturbing spike in harassment, intimidation, and threats of violence" at school board meetings.

"In testimony to our Committee, Attorney General Garland confirmed that your letter was the basis for his unusual directive to target parents," Jordan wrote.

Brave Software Head of Communications Catherine Corre told Just the News the old fact-check about Project Veritas showed up high in results because the source, the Poynter Institute, made an "invisible" meta tag update a few days ago, meaning the page "was labeled as 'fresh'" in Brave's search engine. It's fixing the bug, she said.

"Brave Search is an independent search engine and we do not censor results," nor does it apply blocks or rules to disfavor content other than child sexual abuse material, Corre said. "We do not prioritize so-called 'fact checkers' in any way." She didn't answer why Project Veritas itself didn't appear in first-page results, but said its rankings depend on "relevancy to the query, freshness, page popularity, etc."

Google didn't answer Re's claim about trying to kill Carlson's story but told Just the News the "changing quickly" notices have been triggered millions of times since the feature's rollout a year and half ago.

They appear automatically when "a range of sources have not yet weighed in" and they don't block results, a Google spokesperson said. The query "herschel urged woman abortion she says," referring to recent U.S. Senate candidate Herschel Walker, provoked the notice, for example.

"Political ideology is not a signal our systems understand" and Google does not "manually manipulate web listings" for ranking purposes, the spokesperson said.

The Daily Mail took

down its report on the Project Veritas sting apparently within two hours of going live early Thursday morning, according to an archive of the page and baffled social media users. The report said it has asked Pfizer for comment.

MSN republished the Daily Mail report and removed it just as quickly. That version's metadata still shows up in Brave results as of Friday afternoon, but Just the News has not been able to find archives or caches.

Google slapped the search with the same "changing quickly" label.

Human Events noted the disappearance of the Daily Mail and MSN reports in a story written by Project Veritas Press Secretary R.C. Maxwell, which said neither website responded to questions.

Carlson and social media users speculated the disappearances and broader media blackout, which includes CNN and MSNBC, were related to Pfizer's heavy advertising spending in mainstream media. The company paused its advertising on Twitter following billionaire Elon Musk's takeover, according to The Wall Street Journal, due to concerns about a pullback on content moderation.

The Daily Mail, however, has recently run other unflattering Pfizer stories.

It reported Friday the FDA found a potentially higher risk of stroke in people who get Pfizer's bivalent COVID vaccine and a flu shot the same day. It also emphasized Bourla's pay package and the tripling of Pfizer's revenue since 2019, when the CEO was accosted by critical journalists at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

House Republicans have long sought his testimony, which Jordan noted in reiterating his request.
