Mayor and two city council seats up for election, challengers can file this week There is a battle coming between the Federal Reserve and legislatures with the debt ceiling. It could get rough financially in 2023. But the true full faith in credit is you and me—the workers of America—the policemen, firemen, teachers, construction workers, insurance agents, etc. ***** On page 15, the 85 years ago front page of the Howe Messenger listed multiple Texoma Newspapers including the Sherman Democrat, Sherman Courier, Grayson County Beacon, Grayson News, Howe Messenger, Tom Bean Times, Gunter Star, Collinsville Times, and the Whitesboro NewsRecord, and Van Alstyne Leader. Mayor Bill French

Councilman Rod Gross

Councilman Dale Rideout

It was announced in December’s City Council meeting that January 18 will be the first day for citizens to file to challenge three local city officials. All of the current city council members were either appointed or obtained their seats through uncontested elections. Howe has not

had a contested mayor election in nearly 20 years as current Mayor Bill French was appointed by outgoing former mayor Jeff Stanley upon his sudden resignation after another uncontested election in 2019. The Texas Secretary of State forced Howe to have a mayoral election after

the appointment, however, no one filed to run against French who has his current term expiring this coming May along with council members Rod Gross and Dale Rideout.

City’s sales tax revenue jumps 22 percent from January 2022 The City of Howe’s Economic Development Director Monte Walker reports that the City of Howe’s sales tax receipts for January 2023 show an increase of 22 percent over last year. The total for the month is $52,123.98 which is nearly double the amount from January 2019 which was $27,131.66. This month’s total is derived from sales made in November by businesses that report tax monthly. Walker, who also serves as the Howe Area Chamber of Commerce president, says that the partnership between the chamber and the city and the local news publication creates a local economic ecosystem that this city hasn’t seen sustained over a long period of time such as this eight year period. “To me, this is evidence

of our “shop local” marketing presence we’ve been hammering home for the past eight years,” Walker said. “The Howe Enterprise allows for local businesses to advertise to local citizens at a very low cost which only strengthens our local business opportunities. The chamber of commerce reinforces the shop local system and the city is eventually has become the beneficiary of those collective efforts.” January Sales Tax Receipts 2012 2013 2014 *2015 2016 2017 2018 2019 2020 2021 2022 2023

HISD Board President Clint Catching

Trustee member Lisa Tibbets

Howe Independent School District will have two seats up for election. Currently holding those seats are Clint Catching and Lisa Tibbets. Catching, who is expected to seek re-election, would seek his fourth 3-year term. He has served as president of the Howe ISD Board of Trustees since Greg Akins

stepped down (the first time) in 2019. Tibbets was originally elected during the “mailin-ballot election” of November 2022. The election was originally scheduled for May of 2020 but was pushed back due to the concerns of COVID-19.
